Jeremiah 17:9-11

⁹“The ^(A)heart is deceitful above all things,
And ^[a]desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
¹⁰I, the Lord, ^(B)search the heart,
I test the ^[b]mind,
^(C)Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.

¹¹“As a partridge that ^[c]broods but does not hatch,
So is he who gets riches, but not by right;
It ^(D)will leave him in the midst of his days,
And at his end he will be ^(E)a fool.”

⁹The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it? ¹⁰I, Jehovah, search the mind, I try the ^[a]heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings. ¹¹As the partridge ^[b]that sitteth on eggs which she hath not laid, so is he that getteth riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days ^[c]they shall leave him, and at his end he shall be a fool.

⁹The heart^(A) is deceitful above all things
and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?

¹⁰“I the Lord search the heart^(B)
and examine the mind,^(C)
to reward^(D) each person according to their conduct,
according to what their deeds deserve.”^(E)

¹¹Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay
are those who gain riches by unjust means.
When their lives are half gone, their riches will desert them,
and in the end they will prove to be fools.^(F)
