12 A glorious throne(A)
on high(B) from the beginning
is the place of our sanctuary.(C)
13 Lord, the hope of Israel,(D)
all who abandon you
will be put to shame.
All who turn away from me
will be written in the dirt,
for they have abandoned
the Lord, the fountain of living water.(E)

Jeremiah’s Plea

14 Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed;
save me, and I will be saved,
for you are my praise.(F)
15 Hear how they keep challenging me,(G)
“Where is the word of the Lord?
Let it come!”
16 But I have not run away from being your shepherd,
and I have not longed for the fatal day.(H)
You know my words were spoken in your presence.
17 Don’t become a terror to me.
You are my refuge(I) in the day of disaster.
18 Let my persecutors be put to shame,(J)
but don’t let me be put to shame.
Let them be terrified, but don’t let me be terrified.
Bring on them the day of disaster;(K)
shatter them with total[a] destruction.

  1. 17:18 Lit double

12 But we worship at your throne—
    eternal, high, and glorious!
13 O Lord, the hope of Israel,
all who turn away from you will be disgraced.
They will be buried in the dust of the earth,
for they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living water.

14 O Lord, if you heal me, I will be truly healed;
if you save me, I will be truly saved.
My praises are for you alone!
15 People scoff at me and say,
“What is this ‘message from the Lord’ you talk about?
Why don’t your predictions come true?”

16 Lord, I have not abandoned my job
as a shepherd for your people.
I have not urged you to send disaster.
You have heard everything I’ve said.
17 Lord, don’t terrorize me!
You alone are my hope in the day of disaster.
18 Bring shame and dismay on all who persecute me,
but don’t let me experience shame and dismay.
Bring a day of terror on them.
Yes, bring double destruction upon them!
