15 Then Yahweh said to me, “Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind would not turn toward this people. Cast them out of my sight, and let them go out! It will happen, when they ask you, ‘Where shall we go out?’ then you shall tell them, ‘Yahweh says:

“Such as are for death, to death;
such as are for the sword, to the sword;
such as are for the famine, to the famine;
and such as are for captivity, to captivity.”’

“I will appoint over them four kinds,” says Yahweh: “the sword to kill, the dogs to tear, the birds of the sky, and the animals of the earth, to devour and to destroy. I will cause them to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.

For who will have pity on you, Jerusalem?
    Who will mourn you?
    Who will come to ask of your welfare?
You have rejected me,” says Yahweh.
    “You have gone backward.
Therefore I have stretched out my hand against you
    and destroyed you.
    I am weary of showing compassion.
I have winnowed them with a fan in the gates of the land.
    I have bereaved them of children.
I have destroyed my people.
    They didn’t return from their ways.
Their widows are increased more than the sand of the seas.
    I have brought on them against the mother of the young men a destroyer at noonday.
    I have caused anguish and terrors to fall on her suddenly.
She who has borne seven languishes.
    She has given up the spirit.
Her sun has gone down while it was yet day.
    She has been disappointed and confounded.
    I will deliver their residue to the sword before their enemies,” says Yahweh.

10 Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me, a man of strife,
    and a man of contention to the whole earth!
I have not lent, neither have men lent to me;
    yet every one of them curses me.

11 Yahweh said,

“Most certainly I will strengthen you for good.
    Most certainly I will cause the enemy to make supplication to you in the time of evil
    and in the time of affliction.
12 Can one break iron,
    even iron from the north, and bronze?
13 I will give your substance and your treasures for a plunder without price,
    and that for all your sins,
    even in all your borders.
14 I will make them to pass with your enemies into a land which you don’t know;
    for a fire is kindled in my anger,
    which will burn on you.”

15 Yahweh, you know.
    Remember me, visit me,
    and avenge me of my persecutors.
You are patient, so don’t take me away.
    Know that for your sake I have suffered reproach.
16 Your words were found,
    and I ate them.
Your words were to me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart,
    for I am called by your name, Yahweh, God of Armies.
17 I didn’t sit in the assembly of those who make merry and rejoice.
    I sat alone because of your hand,
    for you have filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain perpetual,
    and my wound incurable,
    which refuses to be healed?
Will you indeed be to me as a deceitful brook,
    like waters that fail?

19 Therefore Yahweh says,

“If you return, then I will bring you again,
    that you may stand before me;
and if you take out the precious from the vile,
    you will be as my mouth.
They will return to you,
    but you will not return to them.
20 I will make you to this people a fortified bronze wall.
    They will fight against you,
    but they will not prevail against you;
for I am with you to save you
    and to deliver you,” says Yahweh.
21 “I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked,
    and I will redeem you out of the hand of the terrible.”

Four Types of Calamity

15 Then Yahweh said to me, “Even if Moses and Samuel stood before me,[a] my heart would not be to this people. Send them away from my sight,[b] and let them go out. And then[c] if they say to you, ‘Where shall we go?’ Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh,

Those who are destined for the plague, to the plague,
and those who are destined for the sword, to the sword,
and those who are destined for the famine, to the famine,
and those who are destined for the captivity, to the captivity.”’

“And I will summon[d] over them four types of calamity,” declares[e] Yahweh, “the sword to kill, and the dogs to drag away, and the birds[f] of the air and the wild animals[g] of the earth to devour and to destroy. And I will make them a terror to all of the kingdoms of the earth because of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, because of what he did in Jerusalem.

“For who will have compassion on you, O Jerusalem,
    or who will show sympathy to you,
    or who will turn aside to ask about your welfare?[h]
You have forsaken me,” declares[i] Yahweh.
    “You go backward, so I have stretched my hand against you,
and I have destroyed you.
    I am tired of becoming remorseful.
And I have winnowed them with a winnowing fork in the gates of the land.
    I am bereaved.
I have destroyed my people.
    They did not turn back from their ways.
Their widows[j] will be more numerous before me than the sand of the seas.
    I have brought to them, against the mothers[k] of young men,[l]
a destroyer at noon.
    I will suddenly drop on her anguish and horror.[m]
She who gave birth to seven has withered away.
    She gasps her breath.
Her sun set[n] while still day.
    She has been put to shame and disgraced.
And the remainder of them I will give to the sword
    before[o] their enemies,” declares[p] Yahweh.

Jeremiah’s Lament and Yahweh’s Response

10 Woe to me, O my mother, that you gave birth to me,
    a man of contention and quarreling to the whole land.[q]
I have not lent out and I have not borrowed.[r]
    All of them are cursing me.

11 Yahweh said,

Surely[s] I will set you free to be good[t] for you,
    surely[u] I will cause the enemy to intercede with you
in a time of trouble,
    and in a time of distress.
12 Can anyone break iron,
    iron from the north, or bronze?
13 I will give your wealth and your treasures
    as plunder without price,
even because of all your sins,
    and throughout all your territories.
14 And I will make you serve your enemies
    in a land that you do not know,
for a fire will kindle in my anger.
    Upon you it will be kindled.”
15 You who know, O Yahweh, remember me, and attend to me,
    and take revenge for me against my persecutors in your forbearance.[v]
You must take me away.
    Know that I am carrying disgrace because of you.
16 Your words were found and I ate them,
    and your words became to me as jubilation,
even as the joy of my heart,
    for your name is called on me, O Yahweh God of hosts.
17 I sat not in the assembly of jokers,
    nor did I exult.
Because of the presence[w] of your hand I sat alone,
    for you filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain endless, and my wound incurable?
    It refuses to become healed.
Truly you are to me like a deceitful brook,
    waters that are not trustworthy.

19 Therefore thus says Yahweh,

“If you turn back, then I will take you back.
    You will stand before me.[x]
And if you utter what is precious and not what is worthless,
    you will be as my mouth.
They will turn back to you,
    and you will not turn back to them.
20 And I will make you to this people
    a wall of fortified bronze,
and they will fight against you,
    but they will not prevail over you,
for I am with you, to save you,
    and to deliver you,” declares[y] Yahweh.
21 “And I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked,
    and I will redeem you from the hand of the tyrant.”

The Lord’s Negative Response

15 Then the Lord said to me: “Even if(A) Moses and(B) Samuel should(C) stand before Me,(D) My compassions would not reach out to these people. Send them from My presence, and let them go. If they ask you, ‘Where will we go?’ you must tell them: This is what the Lord says:

Those destined for death,(E) to death;
those destined for the sword, to the sword.
Those destined for famine, to famine;
those destined for captivity, to captivity.

“I will ordain four kinds[a] of judgment for them”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“the sword to kill, the dogs to drag away,(F) and the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the land(G) to devour and destroy. I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of Manasseh(H) son of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.

Who will have pity on you, Jerusalem?(I)
Who will show sympathy toward you?(J)
Who will turn aside
to ask about your welfare?
You have left Me.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
You have turned your back,
so I have stretched out My hand against you
and destroyed you.
I am tired of showing compassion.
I scattered them with a winnowing fork
at the gates of the land.
I made them childless; I destroyed My people.
They would not turn from their ways.(K)
I made their widows more numerous
than the sand of the seas.(L)
I brought a destroyer at noon
against the mother of young men.
I suddenly released on her
agitation and terrors.
The mother of seven grew faint;(M)
she breathed her last breath.
Her sun set while it was still day;
she was ashamed and humiliated.
The rest of them I will give over to the sword
in the presence of their enemies.”
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Jeremiah’s Complaint

10 Woe is me, my mother,
that you gave birth to me,(N)
a man who incites dispute and conflict
in all the land.
I did not lend or borrow,
yet everyone curses me.(O)

The Lord’s Response

11 The Lord said:

I will certainly set you free and care for you.[b]
I will certainly intercede for you
in a time of trouble,
in your time of distress, with the enemy.
12 Can anyone smash iron,
iron from the north, or bronze?
13 I will give up your wealth
and your treasures as plunder,
without cost,(P) for all your sins
in all your borders.
14 Then I will make you serve your enemies[c]
in a land you do not know,
for My anger will kindle a fire
that will burn against you.(Q)

Jeremiah’s Prayer for Vengeance

15 You know,(R) Lord;
remember me and take note of me.
Avenge me against my persecutors.(S)
In Your patience,[d] don’t take me away.
Know that I suffer disgrace for Your honor.(T)
16 Your words were found, and I ate them.(U)
Your words became a delight to me
and the joy of my heart,
for I am called by Your name,(V)
Yahweh God of Hosts.
17 I never sat with the band of revelers,
and I did not celebrate with them.
Because Your hand was on me, I sat alone,(W)
for You filled me with indignation.
18 Why has my pain become unending,
my wound incurable,(X)
refusing to be healed?
You truly have become like a mirage to me—
water that is not reliable.

Jeremiah Told to Repent

19 Therefore, this is what the Lord says:

If you return, I will restore you;
you will stand in My presence.
And if you speak noble words,
rather than worthless ones,
you will be My spokesman.(Y)
It is they who must return to you;
you must not return to them.
20 Then I will make you a fortified wall of bronze
to this people.
They will fight against you
but will not overcome you,
for I am with you
to save you and deliver you.(Z)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
21 I will deliver you from the power of evil people
and redeem you from the control of the ruthless.
