14 And the Lord said to me: “The (A)prophets are prophesying lies in my name. (B)I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, (C)worthless divination, and (D)the deceit of their own minds. 15 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although (E)I did not send them, and who say, (F)‘Sword and famine shall not come upon this land’: (G)By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed. 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, (H)with none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them.

17 “You shall say to them this word:
(I)‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day,
    and let them not cease,
for the virgin (J)daughter of my people is shattered with a great wound,
    (K)with a very grievous blow.
18 (L)If I go out into the field,
    behold, those pierced by the sword!
(M)And if I enter the city,
    behold, the diseases of famine!
(N)For both prophet and priest ply their trade through the land
    and have no knowledge.’”

19 (O)Have you utterly rejected Judah?
    Does your soul loathe Zion?
Why have you struck us down
    (P)so that there is no healing for us?
(Q)We looked for peace, but no good came;
    (R)for a time of healing, but behold, terror.
20 (S)We acknowledge our wickedness, O Lord,
    and the iniquity of our fathers,
    (T)for we have sinned against you.
21 Do not spurn us, (U)for your name's sake;
    do not dishonor your glorious throne;
    (V)remember and do not break your covenant with us.
22 Are there any among (W)the false gods of the nations (X)that can bring rain?
    Or can the heavens give showers?
Are you not he, O Lord our God?
    We set our hope on you,
    (Y)for you do all these things.

The Lord Will Not Relent

15 Then the Lord said to me, (Z)“Though (AA)Moses (AB)and Samuel (AC)stood before me, yet my heart would not turn toward this people. Send them out of my sight, and let them go! And when they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord:

(AD)“‘Those who are for pestilence, to pestilence,
    and those who are for the sword, to the sword;
those who are for famine, to famine,
    and those who are for captivity, to captivity.’

(AE)I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers, declares the Lord: the sword to kill, the dogs to tear, and (AF)the birds of the air (AG)and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy. (AH)And I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what (AI)Manasseh the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem.

(AJ)“Who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem,
    (AK)or who will grieve for you?
Who will turn aside
    to ask about your welfare?
(AL)You have rejected me, declares the Lord;
    (AM)you keep going backward,
so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you—
    (AN)I am weary of relenting.
(AO)I have winnowed them with (AP)a winnowing fork
    in the gates of the land;
I have bereaved them; I have destroyed my people;
    (AQ)they did not turn from their ways.
I have made their widows more in number
    than (AR)the sand of the seas;
I have brought against the mothers of young men
    a destroyer at noonday;
I have made anguish and terror
    fall upon them suddenly.
(AS)She who bore seven has grown feeble;
    (AT)she has fainted away;
(AU)her sun went down while it was yet day;
    she has been shamed and disgraced.
And the rest of them I will give to the sword
    before their enemies,
declares the Lord.”

Jeremiah's Complaint

10 (AV)Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! (AW)I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me. 11 The Lord said, “Have I not[a] set you free for their good? Have I not pleaded for you before the enemy in the time of trouble and in the time of distress? 12 Can one break iron, iron (AX)from the north, and bronze?

13 (AY)“Your wealth and your treasures I will give as (AZ)spoil, without price, for all your sins, throughout all your territory. 14 I will make you serve your enemies (BA)in a land that you do not know, (BB)for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.”

15 (BC)O Lord, you know;
    (BD)remember me and visit me,
    (BE)(BF)and take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
In your forbearance take me not away;
    (BG)know that (BH)for your sake I bear reproach.
16 Your words were found, (BI)and I ate them,
    and (BJ)your words became to me a joy
    and the delight of my heart,
(BK)for I am called by your name,
    O Lord, God of hosts.
17 (BL)I did not sit in the company of revelers,
    nor did I rejoice;
(BM)I sat alone, because your hand was upon me,
    for you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unceasing,
    (BN)my wound incurable,
    refusing to be healed?
Will you be to me (BO)like a deceitful brook,
    like waters that fail?

19 Therefore thus says the Lord:
(BP)“If you return, I will restore you,
    and you shall (BQ)stand before me.
If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,
    you shall be as my mouth.
They shall turn to you,
    but you shall not turn to them.

  1. Jeremiah 15:11 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain

14 Then the Lord said to me, “The prophets are prophesying lies(A) in my name. I have not sent(B) them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions,(C) divinations,(D) idolatries[a] and the delusions of their own minds. 15 Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish(E) by sword and famine.(F) 16 And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury(G) them, their wives, their sons and their daughters.(H) I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.(I)

17 “Speak this word to them:

“‘Let my eyes overflow with tears(J)
    night and day without ceasing;
for the Virgin(K) Daughter, my people,
    has suffered a grievous wound,
    a crushing blow.(L)
18 If I go into the country,
    I see those slain by the sword;
if I go into the city,
    I see the ravages of famine.(M)
Both prophet and priest
    have gone to a land they know not.(N)’”

19 Have you rejected Judah completely?(O)
    Do you despise Zion?
Why have you afflicted us
    so that we cannot be healed?(P)
We hoped for peace
    but no good has come,
for a time of healing
    but there is only terror.(Q)
20 We acknowledge(R) our wickedness, Lord,
    and the guilt of our ancestors;(S)
    we have indeed sinned(T) against you.
21 For the sake of your name(U) do not despise us;
    do not dishonor your glorious throne.(V)
Remember your covenant(W) with us
    and do not break it.
22 Do any of the worthless idols(X) of the nations bring rain?(Y)
    Do the skies themselves send down showers?
No, it is you, Lord our God.
    Therefore our hope is in you,
    for you are the one who does all this.(Z)

15 Then the Lord said to me: “Even if Moses(AA) and Samuel(AB) were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people.(AC) Send them away from my presence!(AD) Let them go! And if they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘Those destined for death, to death;
those for the sword, to the sword;(AE)
those for starvation, to starvation;(AF)
those for captivity, to captivity.’(AG)

“I will send four kinds of destroyers(AH) against them,” declares the Lord, “the sword(AI) to kill and the dogs(AJ) to drag away and the birds(AK) and the wild animals to devour and destroy.(AL) I will make them abhorrent(AM) to all the kingdoms of the earth(AN) because of what Manasseh(AO) son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.

“Who will have pity(AP) on you, Jerusalem?
    Who will mourn for you?
    Who will stop to ask how you are?
You have rejected(AQ) me,” declares the Lord.
    “You keep on backsliding.
So I will reach out(AR) and destroy you;
    I am tired of holding back.(AS)
I will winnow(AT) them with a winnowing fork
    at the city gates of the land.
I will bring bereavement(AU) and destruction on my people,(AV)
    for they have not changed their ways.(AW)
I will make their widows(AX) more numerous
    than the sand of the sea.
At midday I will bring a destroyer(AY)
    against the mothers of their young men;
suddenly I will bring down on them
    anguish and terror.(AZ)
The mother of seven will grow faint(BA)
    and breathe her last.(BB)
Her sun will set while it is still day;
    she will be disgraced(BC) and humiliated.
I will put the survivors to the sword(BD)
    before their enemies,”(BE)
declares the Lord.

10 Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,(BF)
    a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!(BG)
I have neither lent(BH) nor borrowed,
    yet everyone curses(BI) me.

11 The Lord said,

“Surely I will deliver you(BJ) for a good purpose;
    surely I will make your enemies plead(BK) with you
    in times of disaster and times of distress.

12 “Can a man break iron—
    iron from the north(BL)—or bronze?

13 “Your wealth(BM) and your treasures
    I will give as plunder,(BN) without charge,(BO)
because of all your sins
    throughout your country.(BP)
14 I will enslave you to your enemies
    in[b] a land you do not know,(BQ)
for my anger will kindle a fire(BR)
    that will burn against you.”

15 Lord, you understand;
    remember me and care for me.
    Avenge me on my persecutors.(BS)
You are long-suffering(BT)—do not take me away;
    think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.(BU)
16 When your words came, I ate(BV) them;
    they were my joy and my heart’s delight,(BW)
for I bear your name,(BX)
    Lord God Almighty.
17 I never sat(BY) in the company of revelers,
    never made merry with them;
I sat alone because your hand(BZ) was on me
    and you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unending
    and my wound grievous and incurable?(CA)
You are to me like a deceptive brook,
    like a spring that fails.(CB)

19 Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“If you repent, I will restore you
    that you may serve(CC) me;
if you utter worthy, not worthless, words,
    you will be my spokesman.(CD)
Let this people turn to you,
    but you must not turn to them.
