New Living Translation
Idolatry Brings Destruction
10 Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O Israel! 2 This is what the Lord says:
“Do not act like the other nations,
who try to read their future in the stars.
Do not be afraid of their predictions,
even though other nations are terrified by them.
3 Their ways are futile and foolish.
They cut down a tree, and a craftsman carves an idol.
4 They decorate it with gold and silver
and then fasten it securely with hammer and nails
so it won’t fall over.
5 Their gods are like
helpless scarecrows in a cucumber field!
They cannot speak,
and they need to be carried because they cannot walk.
Do not be afraid of such gods,
for they can neither harm you nor do you any good.”
6 Lord, there is no one like you!
For you are great, and your name is full of power.
7 Who would not fear you, O King of nations?
That title belongs to you alone!
Among all the wise people of the earth
and in all the kingdoms of the world,
there is no one like you.
8 People who worship idols are stupid and foolish.
The things they worship are made of wood!
9 They bring beaten sheets of silver from Tarshish
and gold from Uphaz,
and they give these materials to skillful craftsmen
who make their idols.
Then they dress these gods in royal blue and purple robes
made by expert tailors.
10 But the Lord is the only true God.
He is the living God and the everlasting King!
The whole earth trembles at his anger.
The nations cannot stand up to his wrath.
11 Say this to those who worship other gods: “Your so-called gods, who did not make the heavens and earth, will vanish from the earth and from under the heavens.”[a]
12 But the Lord made the earth by his power,
and he preserves it by his wisdom.
With his own understanding
he stretched out the heavens.
13 When he speaks in the thunder,
the heavens roar with rain.
He causes the clouds to rise over the earth.
He sends the lightning with the rain
and releases the wind from his storehouses.
14 The whole human race is foolish and has no knowledge!
The craftsmen are disgraced by the idols they make,
for their carefully shaped works are a fraud.
These idols have no breath or power.
15 Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies!
On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed.
16 But the God of Israel[b] is no idol!
He is the Creator of everything that exists,
including Israel, his own special possession.
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is his name!
The Coming Destruction
17 Pack your bags and prepare to leave;
the siege is about to begin.
18 For this is what the Lord says:
“Suddenly, I will fling out
all you who live in this land.
I will pour great troubles upon you,
and at last you will feel my anger.”
19 My wound is severe,
and my grief is great.
My sickness is incurable,
but I must bear it.
20 My home is gone,
and no one is left to help me rebuild it.
My children have been taken away,
and I will never see them again.
21 The shepherds of my people have lost their senses.
They no longer seek wisdom from the Lord.
Therefore, they fail completely,
and their flocks are scattered.
22 Listen! Hear the terrifying roar of great armies
as they roll down from the north.
The towns of Judah will be destroyed
and become a haunt for jackals.
Jeremiah’s Prayer
23 I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own.
We are not able to plan our own course.
24 So correct me, Lord, but please be gentle.
Do not correct me in anger, for I would die.
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that refuse to acknowledge you—
on the peoples that do not call upon your name.
For they have devoured your people Israel[c];
they have devoured and consumed them,
making the land a desolate wilderness.
Judah’s Broken Covenant
11 The Lord gave another message to Jeremiah. He said, 2 “Remind the people of Judah and Jerusalem about the terms of my covenant with them. 3 Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Cursed is anyone who does not obey the terms of my covenant! 4 For I said to your ancestors when I brought them out of the iron-smelting furnace of Egypt, “If you obey me and do whatever I command you, then you will be my people, and I will be your God.” 5 I said this so I could keep my promise to your ancestors to give you a land flowing with milk and honey—the land you live in today.’”
Then I replied, “Amen, Lord! May it be so.”
6 Then the Lord said, “Broadcast this message in the streets of Jerusalem. Go from town to town throughout the land and say, ‘Remember the ancient covenant, and do everything it requires. 7 For I solemnly warned your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, “Obey me!” I have repeated this warning over and over to this day, 8 but your ancestors did not listen or even pay attention. Instead, they stubbornly followed their own evil desires. And because they refused to obey, I brought upon them all the curses described in this covenant.’”
9 Again the Lord spoke to me and said, “I have discovered a conspiracy against me among the people of Judah and Jerusalem. 10 They have returned to the sins of their ancestors. They have refused to listen to me and are worshiping other gods. Israel and Judah have both broken the covenant I made with their ancestors. 11 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: I am going to bring calamity upon them, and they will not escape. Though they beg for mercy, I will not listen to their cries. 12 Then the people of Judah and Jerusalem will pray to their idols and burn incense before them. But the idols will not save them when disaster strikes! 13 Look now, people of Judah; you have as many gods as you have towns. You have as many altars of shame—altars for burning incense to your god Baal—as there are streets in Jerusalem.
14 “Pray no more for these people, Jeremiah. Do not weep or pray for them, for I will not listen to them when they cry out to me in distress.
15 “What right do my beloved people have to come to my Temple,
when they have done so many immoral things?
Can their vows and sacrifices prevent their destruction?
They actually rejoice in doing evil!
16 I, the Lord, once called them a thriving olive tree,
beautiful to see and full of good fruit.
But now I have sent the fury of their enemies
to burn them with fire,
leaving them charred and broken.
17 “I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, who planted this olive tree, have ordered it destroyed. For the people of Israel and Judah have done evil, arousing my anger by burning incense to Baal.”
A Plot against Jeremiah
18 Then the Lord told me about the plots my enemies were making against me. 19 I was like a lamb being led to the slaughter. I had no idea that they were planning to kill me! “Let’s destroy this man and all his words,” they said. “Let’s cut him down, so his name will be forgotten forever.”
20 O Lord of Heaven’s Armies,
you make righteous judgments,
and you examine the deepest thoughts and secrets.
Let me see your vengeance against them,
for I have committed my cause to you.
21 This is what the Lord says about the men of Anathoth who wanted me dead. They had said, “We will kill you if you do not stop prophesying in the Lord’s name.” 22 So this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says about them: “I will punish them! Their young men will die in battle, and their boys and girls will starve to death. 23 Not one of these plotters from Anathoth will survive, for I will bring disaster upon them when their time of punishment comes.”

10 Kamo nga katawhan sa Israel, paminawa ninyo ang gisulti sa Ginoo. 2 Miingon siya, “Ayaw kamo pagsunod sa binuhatan sa ubang mga nasod, ug ayaw kamo kahadlok sa mga timailhan sa langit, bisan pag ang uban nga mga nasod nahadlok niini. 3 Wala gayoy pulos ang tinuohan nianang mga tawhana. Nagaputol silag kahoy sa kalasangan, unya kuliton kini sa usa ka magkukulit. 4 Panindoton dayon kini ginamit ang plata ug bulawan, ug lansangan pag-ayo aron dili matumba. 5 Kini nga mga dios-dios sama sa tawo-tawo sa uma nga dili makasulti. Kinahanglan pa gayong sakwaton kay dili makalakaw. Ayaw kamo kahadlok niini nga mga dios-dios kay dili sila makahimog kadaot ni makahimog maayo.”
6 O Ginoo, wala gayoy sama kanimo. Gamhanan ka ug halangdon ang imong ngalan. 7 Kinsay dili motahod kanimo, O Hari sa mga nasod? Takos ka nga tahoron. Wala gayoy sama kanimo sa tanang mga tawong maalamon sa nagkalain-laing mga nasod, ug sa tanan nilang mga hari. 8 Mga hungog silang tanan ug mga buang-buang. Ang mga pagtulon-an sa ilang mga dios-dios nga kahoy walay pulos. 9 Nagpahimo sila sa mga panday ug dios-dios, ug gipahaklapan nila kini sa mga platero ug plata nga gikan sa Tarshish ug bulawan nga gikan sa Ufas. Unya gisul-oban nila kinig bisti nga kolor asul ug kolor ube nga tinahi sa mga hanas nga mananahi. 10 Apan ang Ginoo mao ang tinuod nga Dios. Siya ang buhi nga Dios ug Hari hangtod sa kahangtoran. Kon masuko siya, matay-og ang kalibotan ug walay nasod nga makaharong sa iyang kasuko. 11 Sultihi kanang nagasimba sa ubang mga dios niini: “Mahanaw sa kalibotan ang inyong mga dios nga dili maoy nagmugna sa kalibotan ug kalangitan.”
12 Apan ang Dios maoy naghimo sa langit ug sa kalibotan pinaagi sa iyang gahom ug kaalam. 13 Sa iyang pagmando, nagagawas ang mga panganod ug mga kilat sa kalangitan, ug nagaulan ug kusog. Nagapadala siya ug hangin gikan sa iyang mga tipiganan. 14 Mga hungog ug buang-buang ang mga tawong nagasimba sa mga dios-dios. Maulawan ang mga platero tungod sa ilang mga dios-dios, kay mini kini. Wala kini kinabuhi. 15 Talamayon kini ug walay pulos. Sa panahon sa pagsilot malaglag silang tanan. 16 Apan ang Dios ni Jacob[a] dili sama niana. Siya ang naghimo sa tanang butang, apil ang Israel, ang katawhan nga iyang gipanag-iyahan. Ginoo nga Makagagahom ang iyang ngalan.
Ang Umaabot nga Kalaglagan
17 Mga katawhan sa Jerusalem, hiposa ninyo ang inyong mga butang ug pangandam sa pagbiya, kay hapit nang sulongon ang inyong siyudad. 18 Kay mao kini ang giingon sa Ginoo, “Paminaw! Papahawaon ko kamo niining yutaa. Paantuson ko kamo aron nga matagamtaman ninyo ang akong kasuko.”
19 Miingon ang mga taga-Jerusalem, “Alaot kita! Grabe kaayo ang atong samad. Dili na kini maulian. Apan kinahanglan nga antuson nato kini. 20 Guba na ang atong tolda; nangabugto na ang tanang mga higot niini. Wala na ang atong mga anak. Wala nay nahibilin aron pagpatindog pag-usab sa tolda nga atong puy-an.”
21 Nahitabo kini kanato kay mga hungog ang atong mga pangulo. Wala nila susiha ang kabubut-on sa Ginoo, busa wala sila mouswag ug ang tanan nilang mga sakop nagkatibulaag. 22 Paminawa ninyo ang balita! Madungog na ang dahunog sa nagapaingon nga mga sundalo nga gikan sa amihan! Laglagon nila ang mga lungsod sa Juda, ug mahimo na lang kining puloy-anan sa ihalas nga mga iro.[b]
Ang Pag-ampo ni Jeremias
23 Ginoo, nasayod ako nga ang kinabuhi sa tawo dili iya. Dili siya makabuot sa iyang kapalaran. 24 Disiplinaha kami, Ginoo, apan ayaw lang intawon palabihi. Ayaw kini buhata samtang nasuko ka kay basin ug mangahurot kami. 25 Ipatagamtam ang imong kasuko sa mga nasod ug sa mga katawhan nga wala moila ug modangop kanimo. Kay gilaglag nila ang mga kaliwat ni Jacob ug gipangguba ang ilang mga pinuy-anan.
Wala Tumana sa Juda ang Kasabotan
11 Unya miingon ang Ginoo kang Jeremias, 2 “Pahinumdomi ang mga taga-Juda ug taga-Jerusalem sa mga lagda sa among kasabotan. 3 Ingna sila nga ako, ang Ginoo, ang Dios sa Israel, nagaingon nga tunglohon ko ang tawo nga dili motuman sa lagda niini nga kasabotan. 4 Kini nga mga lagda gipatuman ko sa inyong mga katigulangan sa dihang gipagawas ko sila gikan sa Ehipto, ang dapit nga daw hurnohan nga tunawan sa puthaw. Miingon ako kanila, ‘Kon tumanon ninyo ako ug ang tanan kong mga sugo, mahimo ko kamong katawhan ug ako mahimong inyong Dios. 5 Unya tumanon ko ang akong gipanaad sa inyong mga katigulangan nga hatagan ko silag maayo ug mabungahon nga yuta[c]—ang yuta nga inyong gipanag-iyahan karon.’ ”
Mitubag ako, “Hinaut pa, Ginoo.”
6 Miingon pag-usab ang Ginoo kanako, “Ipahibalo kini nga mga mensahe ngadto sa mga lungsod sa Juda ug sa mga kadalanan sa Jerusalem: ‘Hinumdomi ninyo ug tumana ang mga lagda niini nga kasabotan. 7 Gikan pa sa panahon nga gipagawas ko ang inyong mga katigulangan gikan sa Ehipto hangtod karon, gibalik-balik ko ang pagpasidaan kanila nga tumanon ako. 8 Apan wala gayod sila maminaw o manumbaling kanako. Nagmagahi hinuon sila ug gisunod nila ang tinguha sa ilang daotan nga kasingkasing. Gisugo ko sila nga tumanon ang kasabotan, apan wala gayod nila kini tumana. Busa gipadad-an ko sila sa tanang tunglo nga nahisulat niini nga kasabotan.’ ”
9 Miingon pa gayod ang Ginoo kanako, “Adunay nagplano batok kanako diha sa mga lumulupyo sa Jerusalem ug sa ubang bahin sa Juda. 10 Mibalik na usab sila sa paghimo sa mga sala nga gihimo sa ilang mga katigulangan kaniadto, nga dili gayod maminaw sa akong mga pulong. Nagsimba sila sa ubang mga dios. Managsamang gilapas sa katawhan sa Israel ug sa Juda ang kasabotan nga gihimo ko ngadto sa ilang mga katigulangan. 11 Busa ako, ang Ginoo, nagaingon nga padad-an ko silag katalagman nga dili nila maikyasan. Bisan ug mangayo pa sila kanakog tabang, dili ko sila paminawon. 12 Unya mangadto sila sa mga dios nga ilang gisunogan ug insenso ug magpakitabang, apan dili gayod kini makatabang kanila kon moabot na ang katalagman.
13 “O mga taga-Juda, pagkadaghan sa inyong mga dios, sama kadaghan sa inyong mga lungsod. Ug kon unsa kadaghan ang inyong mga dalan sa Jerusalem mao usab kadaghan ang mga halaran nga gitukod ninyo aron sunogan sa insenso alang sa makauulaw nga dios nga si Baal.
14 “Busa Jeremias, ayaw pag-ampo alang niining mga tawhana. Ayaw pagpakilooy kanako alang kanila kay dili ko sila paminawon kon manawag sila kanako sa panahon sa ilang kalisod. 15 Ang katawhan nga akong gihigugma naghimog daghang daotan nga mga butang. Nan, unsa may ilang katungod sa pag-adto sa akong templo? Makapugong ba ang ilang mga halad sa pag-abot sa kalaglagan diha kanila? Gakalipay man gani sila sa paghimog daotan!”
16 Kaniadto gipakasama sila sa Ginoo sa labong nga kahoyng olibo nga nindot ug mga bunga. Apan uban sa gadahunog nga dilaab sa kalayo laglagon sila sa Ginoo ug ang ilang mga sanga dili na mapuslan. 17 Ang Ginoo nga Makagagahom maoy nagtukod sa Juda ug Israel, apan karon nagmando siya nga laglagon kini tungod sa daotan ninyong binuhatan. Gipalagot ninyo siya pinaagi sa pagsunog ug insenso ngadto kang Baal.
Ang Plano Batok kang Jeremias
18 Gisultihan ako sa Ginoo sa plano sa mga kaaway batok kanako. 19 Sama ako sa usa ka maaghop nga karnero nga wala masayod nga ginadala na diay siya sa ihawanan. Wala ako masayod nga may plano diay sila sa pagpatay kanako. Miingon sila, “Patyon nato siya sama sa pagputol sa kahoy uban sa iyang mga bunga, aron mahanaw siya sa kalibotan ug dili na hinumdoman pa.”
20 Apan nagaampo ako, “O Ginoo nga Makagagahom, matarong ang imong paghukom, ug nasayod ka sa hunahuna ug kasingkasing sa tawo. Pakit-a ako nga imo silang panimaslan, kay gitugyan ko na kanimo ang akong reklamo.”
21 Gusto sa katawhan sa Anatot nga patyon ako kon dili ako moundang sa pagsugilon sa mensahe sa Ginoo. 22 Busa mao kini ang gisulti sa Ginoo nga Makagagahom, “Silotan ko gayod sila. Mangamatay sa gubat ang ilang mga batan-ong lalaki, ug mangamatay sa kagutom ang ilang mga kabataan. 23 Wala gayoy mahibiling buhi sa mga taga-Anatot, kay padad-an ko sila ug katalagman sa panahon nga silotan ko sila.”
