Jerusalem’s Godlessness

5 “^(A)Roam about through the streets of Jerusalem,
And look and take notice.
And seek in her public squares,
If you can ^(B)find a person,
^(C)If there is one who does justice, who seeks honesty,
Then I will forgive ^[a]her.
²And ^(D)although they say, ‘As the Lord lives,’
Certainly they swear falsely.”
³Lord, do ^(E)Your eyes not look for honesty?
You have ^(F)struck them,
But they did not ^[b]weaken;
You have consumed them,
But they ^(G)refused to accept discipline.
They have ^(H)made their faces harder than rock;
They have refused to repent.

⁴Then I said, “They are only the poor,
They are foolish;
For they ^(I)do not know the way of the Lord
Or the judgment of their God.
⁵I will go to the great
And speak to them,
For ^(J)they know the way of the Lord
And the judgment of their God.”
But together they too have ^(K)broken the yoke
And burst the restraints.
⁶Therefore ^(L)a lion from the forest will kill them,
A ^(M)wolf of the deserts will destroy them,
A ^(N)leopard is watching their cities.
Everyone who goes out of them will be torn in pieces,
Because their ^(O)wrongdoings are many,
Their apostasies are numerous.

⁷“Why should I forgive you?
Your sons have forsaken Me
And ^(P)sworn by those who are ^(Q)not gods.
When I had fed them to the full,
They ^(R)committed adultery
And stayed at the prostitute’s house.
⁸They were well-fed lusty horses,
Each one neighing at his ^(S)neighbor’s wife.
⁹Shall I not punish them for these things?” declares the Lord,
“And ^(T)shall I not avenge Myself
On a nation such as this?

¹⁰“Go up through her vine rows and destroy,
But do not execute a complete destruction;
Strip away her branches,
For they are not the Lord’s.
¹¹For the ^(U)house of Israel and the house of Judah
Have dealt very treacherously with Me,” declares the Lord.
¹²They have ^(V)lied about the Lord
And said, “^[c]^(W)Not He;
Misfortune will ^(X)not come upon us,
^(Y)Nor will we see sword or famine.
¹³The ^(Z)prophets are as wind,
And the word is not in them.
So it will be done to them!”

Judgment Proclaimed

¹⁴Therefore, this is what the Lord, the God of armies says:
“Because you have spoken this word,
Behold, I am ^(AA)making My words fire in your mouth,
And this people wood, and it will consume them.
¹⁵Behold, I am ^(AB)bringing a nation against you from far away, you house of Israel,” declares the Lord.
“It is an enduring nation,
It is an ancient nation,
A nation whose ^(AC)language you do not know,
Nor can you understand what they say.
¹⁶Their ^(AD)quiver is like an ^(AE)open grave,
All of them are warriors.
¹⁷They will ^(AF)devour your harvest and your food;
They will devour your sons and your daughters;
They will devour your flocks and your herds;
They will devour your ^(AG)vines and your fig trees;
They will demolish your ^(AH)fortified cities, in which you trust, with the sword.

¹⁸“Yet even in those days,” declares the Lord, “I will not make a complete destruction of you. ¹⁹And it shall come about ^(AI)when ^[d]they say, ‘Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’ then you shall say to them, ‘Just as you have abandoned Me and served foreign gods in your land, so you will ^(AJ)serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’

²⁰“Declare this in the house of Jacob
And proclaim it in Judah, saying,
²¹‘Now hear this, you foolish and ^[e]senseless people,
Who have ^(AK)eyes but do not see,
Who have ears but do not hear.
²²Do you not ^(AL)fear Me?’ declares the Lord.
‘Do you not tremble in My presence?
For I have ^(AM)placed the sand as a boundary for the sea,
An eternal limit, and it will not cross over it.
Though the waves toss, they cannot prevail;
Though they roar, they will not cross over it.
²³But this people has a ^(AN)stubborn and rebellious heart;
They have turned aside and departed.
²⁴They do not say in their heart,
“Let us now fear the Lord our God,
Who ^(AO)gives rain in its season,
Both ^(AP)the autumn rain and the spring rain,
Who keeps for us
The ^(AQ)appointed weeks of the harvest.”
²⁵Your ^(AR)wrongdoings have turned these away,
And your sins have kept good away from you.
²⁶For wicked people are found among My people,
They ^(AS)watch like fowlers ^[f]lying in wait;
They set a trap,
They catch people.
²⁷Like a cage full of birds,
So their houses are full of ^(AT)deceit;
Therefore they have become great and rich.
²⁸They are ^(AU)fat, they are sleek,
They also ^[g]excel in deeds of wickedness;
They do not plead the cause,
The cause of the ^[h]^(AV)orphan, so that they may be successful;
And they do not ^[i]defend the rights of the poor.
²⁹^(AW)Shall I not punish them for these things?’ declares the Lord,
‘Or shall I not avenge Myself
On a nation such as this?’

³⁰“An appalling and ^(AX)horrible thing
Has happened in the land:
³¹The ^(AY)prophets prophesy falsely,
And the priests rule ^[j]on their own authority;
And My people ^(AZ)love it this way!
But what will you do ^[k]when the end comes?

Words to the Jews

⁴¹^(A)So then the Jews were complaining about Him because He said, “I am the bread that ^(B)came down out of heaven.” ⁴²And they were saying, “^(C)Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother ^(D)we know? How does He now say, ‘^(E)I have come down out of heaven’?” ⁴³Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop complaining among yourselves. ⁴⁴No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me ^(F)draws him; and I will ^(G)raise him up on the last day. ⁴⁵It is written ^(H)in the Prophets: ‘^(I)And they shall all be ^(J)taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. ⁴⁶^(K)Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. ⁴⁷Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who believes ^(L)has eternal life. ⁴⁸^(M)I am the bread of life. ⁴⁹^(N)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. ⁵⁰This is the bread that ^(O)comes down out of heaven, so that anyone may eat from it and ^(P)not die. ⁵¹^(Q)I am the living bread that ^(R)came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, ^(S)he will live forever; and the bread which I will give ^(T)for the life of the world also is ^(U)My flesh.”

⁵²^(V)Then the Jews ^(W)began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” ⁵³So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of ^(X)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. ⁵⁴The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will ^(Y)raise him up on the last day. ⁵⁵For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. ⁵⁶The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood ^(Z)remains in Me, and I in him. ⁵⁷Just as the ^(AA)living Father ^(AB)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. ⁵⁸This is the bread that ^(AC)came down out of heaven, not as ^(AD)the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread ^(AE)will live forever.”

Words to the Disciples

⁵⁹These things He said ^(AF)in the synagogue as He taught ^(AG)in Capernaum.

⁶⁰So then many of His ^(AH)disciples, when they heard this, said, “^(AI)This statement is very ^[a]unpleasant; who can listen to it?” ⁶¹But Jesus, ^(AJ)aware that His disciples were complaining about this, said to them, “Is this ^[b]^(AK)offensive to you? ⁶²What then if you see ^(AL)the Son of Man ^(AM)ascending to where He was before? ⁶³^(AN)It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit; ^(AO)the words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life. ⁶⁴But there are ^(AP)some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus ^(AQ)knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and ^(AR)who it was who would ^[c]betray Him. ⁶⁵And He was saying, “For this reason I have ^(AS)told you that no one can come to Me unless ^(AT)it has been granted him from the Father.”

Peter’s Confession of Faith

⁶⁶As a result of this many of His ^(AU)disciples ^(AV)left, and would no longer walk with Him. ⁶⁷So Jesus said to ^(AW)the twelve, “You do not want to leave also, do you?” ⁶⁸^(AX)Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have ^(AY)words of eternal life. ⁶⁹And we have already believed and have come to know that You are ^(AZ)the Holy One of God.” ⁷⁰Jesus answered them, “^(BA)Did I Myself not choose you, ^(BB)the twelve? And yet one of you is ^(BC)a devil.” ⁷¹Now He meant Judas ^(BD)the son of Simon Iscariot; for he, ^(BE)one of ^(BF)the twelve, ^[d]was going to betray Him.

5 ^(A)Listen to my words, Lord,
Consider my ^(B)sighing.
²Listen to ^(C)the sound of my cry for help, ^(D)my King and my God,
For to You I pray.
³In the morning, Lord, ^[b]You will hear my voice;
In the ^(E)morning I will present my ^[c]prayer to You and be on the ^(F)watch.

⁴For You are not a God ^(G)who takes pleasure in wickedness;
^(H)No evil can dwell with You.
⁵The ^(I)boastful will not ^(J)stand before Your eyes;
You ^(K)hate all who do injustice.
⁶You ^(L)destroy those who speak lies;
The Lord loathes ^(M)the person of bloodshed and deceit.

Their ^(U)inward part is destruction itself.
Their ^(V)throat is an open grave;
They ^[h]flatter with their tongue.
¹⁰Make them pay, God;
^(W)Have them fall by their own schemes!
^(X)Scatter them in the multitude of their wrongdoings,
For they are ^(Y)rebellious against You.

¹¹But ^(Z)rejoice, all who ^(AA)take refuge in You,
Sing for joy forever!
And ^[i]may You ^(AB)shelter them,
That those who ^(AC)love Your name may rejoice in You.
¹²For You ^(AD)bless the righteous person, Lord,
You ^(AE)surround him with favor as with a shield.
