Avgudadyrkan orsaken till nöden
44 Detta är det ord som kom till Jeremia om alla de judar som bodde i Egyptens land, i Migdol, Tachpanches, Nofs och Patros område. Han sade:
2 "Så säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud: Ni har sett all den olycka som jag har låtit komma över Jerusalem och över alla Juda städer. Se, de ligger nu öde och ingen bor i dem 3 på grund av den ondska de bedrev. De väckte min vrede genom att gå bort för att tända rökelse och tjäna andra gudar som varken de eller ni själva eller era fäder har känt. 4 Jag har sänt till er mina tjänare profeterna. Jag har sänt dem gång på gång och sagt: Gör inte dessa avskyvärda ting som jag hatar. 5 Men de ville inte lyssna och inte vända örat till, så att de vände om från sin ondska och slutade att tända rökelse åt andra gudar. 6 Därför vällde min förbittring och vrede fram, och den brann i Juda städer och på Jerusalems gator så att de blev ödelagda och skövlade som de är än i dag.
7 Och nu säger Herren, härskarornas Gud, Israels Gud, så: Varför drar ni så mycket ont över er själva? Ni utrotar ur Juda både man och kvinna, barn och spädbarn, så att ingen enda av er blir kvar. 8 Med era händers verk väcker ni min vrede genom att ni tänder rökelse åt andra gudar i Egyptens land, dit ni har kommit för att bosätta er där. Därför måste ni utrotas och bli till förbannelse och vanära bland jordens alla hednafolk. 9 Har ni glömt den ondska som era fäder bedrev och som Juda kungar och deras hustrur, ni själva och era hustrur bedrev i Juda land och på Jerusalems gator? 10 Och fram till denna dag har de inte ödmjukat sig. De fruktar ingenting och vandrar inte efter min lag och mina stadgar som jag förelade er och era fäder.
11 Därför säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud, så: Se, jag skall vända mitt ansikte mot er till er olycka för att utrota hela Juda. 12 Jag skall gripa dem som är kvar av Juda, dem som har bestämt sig för att bege sig till Egypten för att bosätta sig där. De skall alla förgås. I Egypten skall de falla. Genom svärd och hunger skall de gå under, både små och stora, ja, genom svärd och hunger skall de dö. De skall bli till avsky och häpnad, förbannelse och vanära. 13 Jag skall straffa dem som bor i Egyptens land, liksom jag straffade Jerusalem med svärd, hunger och pest. 14 Av dem som är kvar av Juda och som har kommit till Egypten för att bosätta sig där skall ingen överleva och slippa undan, så att de kan vända tillbaka till Juda land även om de önskar att få återvända dit för att bo där. Nej, ingen skall komma tillbaka dit utom några få som flyr dit."
15 Alla män som visste att deras hustrur tände rökelse åt andra gudar och alla kvinnor som stod där i en stor skara, alla som bodde i Patros i Egyptens land, svarade då Jeremia och sade: 16 "Vi vill inte höra på dig när det gäller det som du har talat till oss i Herrens namn, 17 utan vi kommer att göra allt vad vår mun har lovat, att tända rökelse åt himlens drottning och utgjuta drickoffer åt henne, så som vi och våra fäder, våra kungar och furstar gjorde i Juda städer och på Jerusalems gator. Då hade vi tillräckligt med bröd och det gick bra för oss, och vi såg inte till någon olycka. 18 Men sedan vi slutat att tända rökelse åt himlens drottning och utgjuta drickoffer åt henne, har vi lidit brist på allt och går under genom svärd och hunger. 19 Och när vi tände rökelse åt himlens drottning och utgöt drickoffer åt henne, så var det inte utan våra mäns samtycke som vi gjorde offerkakor åt henne, kakor som bar hennes bild, och utgöt drickoffer åt henne."
20 Men Jeremia svarade allt folket, männen och kvinnorna och alla som hade givit honom detta svar. Han sade: 21 "Skulle inte Herren komma ihåg att ni själva och era fäder, era kungar och furstar och folket i landet, har tänt rökelse i Juda städer och på Jerusalems gator, och skulle han inte bry sig om det? 22 Herren kunde inte längre tåla era onda handlingar och de avskyvärda ting som ni höll på med, utan ert land lades öde och blev till häpnad och förbannelse så att ingen kunde bo där, så som det är i dag. 23 Därför att ni tände rökelse och syndade mot Herren och inte lyssnade till Herrens röst eller vandrade efter hans lag, hans stadgar och vittnesbörd, därför har denna olycka drabbat er, så som det är i dag."
24 Jeremia sade vidare till hela folket och till alla kvinnorna: "Hör Herrens ord, alla ni av Juda som är i Egyptens land. 25 Så säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud: Ni och era hustrur har i handling fullgjort vad ni har sagt med er mun. Ni sade: Vi vill hålla de löften som vi gav: att tända rökelse åt himlens drottning och utgjuta drickoffer åt henne. Håll då era löften, ja, uppfyll dem! 26 Hör därför Herrens ord, ni alla av Juda som bor i Egyptens land: Se, jag svär vid mitt stora namn, säger Herren, att i hela Egyptens land skall mitt namn inte mer nämnas av någon judisk mans mun, så att han säger: Så sant Herren, Herren lever. 27 Ty jag skall vaka över dem till deras olycka och inte till deras lycka, och alla män av Juda som är i Egyptens land skall gå under genom svärd och hunger till dess att det är slut med dem. 28 Några få som undkommer svärdet skall få vända tillbaka från Egyptens land till Juda land. Så skall alla som är kvar av Juda och som har kommit till Egyptens land för att bosätta sig där, förstå vems ord som består, mitt eller deras.
29 Detta skall för er vara tecknet på att jag skall straffa er på denna plats, säger Herren, för att ni skall förstå att mina ord om er skall gå i fullbordan till er olycka. 30 Så säger Herren: Se, jag skall utlämna farao Hofra,[a] kungen i Egypten, till hans fiender och till de män som står efter hans liv, liksom jag har utlämnat Sidkia, Juda kung, till Nebukadressar, den babyloniske kungen, som var hans fiende och som stod efter hans liv."

Guds dom över avgudadyrkare
44 Följande budskap gav Gud Jeremia. Det gällde alla judar som bodde i norra Egypten, i städerna Migdol, Tapanhes och Memfis och även dem i södra delen av Egypten:
2-3 Herren, härskarornas Gud, säger: Ni såg vad jag gjorde mot Jerusalem och alla Juda städer. För all sin ondskas skull ligger de i ruiner utan en enda levande varelse. Min vrede upptändes mot dem som bodde där därför att de tillbad andra gudar, gudar som varken de eller ni eller någon av era förfäder kände till.
4 Jag sände mina tjänare profeterna att gång på gång protestera mot detta och vädja till dem att inte göra allt det avskyvärda, som jag hatar.
5 Men de ville inte lyssna och ville inte vända tillbaka från sina ogudaktiga vägar. De har bara fortsatt med sina offer till dessa gudar.
6 Därför kom min vrede som en eld över Juda städer och över gatorna i Jerusalem, och de är fortfarande helt öde.
7 Och nu frågar Herren, härskarornas Gud, Israels Gud, er: Varför drar ni allt detta över er? Inte en enda av er ska få leva - varken män, kvinnor eller barn som har kommit hit från Juda, inte ens spädbarnen i era armar.
8 För ni har upptänt min vrede genom de avgudar ni har gjort och tillbett här i Egypten och genom att tända offereldar åt dem. Därmed störtar ni er själva i fördärvet och blir föremål för avsky och förakt bland alla människor på jorden.
9 Har ni glömt era förfäders synder och de synder kungarna och drottningarna i Juda begick? Har ni glömt era egna synder och era hustrurs synder i Juda och Jerusalem?
10 Ända fram till denna dag har ni inte bett om förlåtelse. Ingen har velat vända om till mig och följa de lagar som jag gav er och era förfäder.
11 Därför säger Herren, härskarornas Gud: Jag har vänt mig från er och kommer att utplåna varenda en av er.
12 Jag ska förgöra dem som finns kvar av Juda, dem som ville komma hit till Egypten. Här ska de falla, dödade av min eld. De ska falla här i Egypten, dödade av hungersnöd och krig. Alla ska dö, från den minste till den störste. De ska bli föraktade, avskydda och hatade, och deras namn ska bli en förbannelse.
13 Jag kommer att straffa dem i Egypten, precis som jag straffade dem i Jerusalem, genom krig, hungersnöd och pest.
14 De som kom hit till Egypten för att återvända till Juda ska inte kunna återvända. Inte en enda av dem ska överleva, utom några få som lyckas fly.
15 Då svarade alla de kvinnor som var där, liksom de män som visste att deras hustrur hade tänt rökelse till avgudar (de var många, eftersom alla judarna i södra Egypten hade samlats):
16 Vi vill inte lyssna till dina falska budskap från Herren!
17 Vi tänker göra som vi själva vill. Vi tänker tända offereld åt himlens drottning och offra till henne så mycket vi vill, alldeles som vi och våra kungar och furstar och våra förfäder före oss alltid har gjort i Juda städer och på gatorna i Jerusalem. På den tiden hade vi tillräckligt med mat, allt var bra och vi var lyckliga.
18 Men ända sedan vi slutade tända offereld åt himlens drottning och slutade tillbe henne har vi haft det svårt och blivit drabbade av svärd och hungersnöd.
19 Och du tror väl inte att vi tillber himlens drottning och häller ut drickoffer åt henne och gör kakor med hennes bild på utan att våra män vet om det och hjälper oss? tillade kvinnorna.
20 Då sa Jeremia till dem allesammans, både kvinnor och män, som hade gett honom detta svar:
21 Naturligtvis kommer Herren ihåg att ni och era förfäder och era kungar och furstar och allt folk tände offereldar åt avgudar i Juda städer och på gatorna i Jerusalem!
22 Det var för att han inte längre kunde uthärda allt det onda ni gjorde, som han ödelade ert land och lät det bli en enda stor ruinhög, drabbat av förbannelse och utan en enda invånare, precis som det är i dag.
23 Själva orsaken till att dessa fruktansvärda olyckor har kommit över er är ju att ni har tänt offereldar och syndat mot Herren och vägrat att lyda honom.
24 Sedan sa Jeremia till alla de närvarande: Lyssna till Herrens ord, ni alla invånare i Juda som bor här i Egypten!
25 Herren, härskarornas Gud, säger: Både ni och era hustrur har sagt att ni aldrig kommer att ge upp er dyrkan av och era offer till himlens drottning, och ni har bevisat det genom ert handlande. Fortsätt då och håll era löften till henne!
26 Men lyssna till Herrens ord, alla ni judar som bor här i Egypten! Jag har lovat vid mitt stora namn, säger Herren, att det inte ska vara till någon nytta för er längre att ni söker min hjälp och ärar mig och säger: 'Herre, vår Gud, hjälp oss!'
27 Jag ska vaka över er, men bara för att se till att olycka verkligen kommer att drabba er och att ni förgås genom krig och hungersnöd tills ni alla är borta.
28 Bara de som vänder tillbaka till Juda, och det kommer bara att bli några få, ska undkomma min vrede. Men alla som vägrar att återvända och som bestämmer sig för att stanna kvar i Egypten ska få veta vems ord som gäller, mitt eller deras!
29 Och det här är beviset för att allt som jag har hotat med ska inträffa, och att jag kommer att straffa er här:
30 Jag ska överlämna Farao Hofra, kungen i Egypten, till dem som vill döda honom, precis som jag överlämnade Sidkia, kungen i Juda, till Nebukadnessar, kungen i Babylon.

Disaster Because of Idolatry
44 This word came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews living in Lower Egypt(A)—in Migdol,(B) Tahpanhes(C) and Memphis(D)—and in Upper Egypt:(E) 2 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You saw the great disaster(F) I brought on Jerusalem and on all the towns of Judah.(G) Today they lie deserted and in ruins(H) 3 because of the evil(I) they have done. They aroused my anger(J) by burning incense(K) to and worshiping other gods(L) that neither they nor you nor your ancestors(M) ever knew. 4 Again and again(N) I sent my servants the prophets,(O) who said, ‘Do not do this detestable(P) thing that I hate!’ 5 But they did not listen or pay attention;(Q) they did not turn from their wickedness(R) or stop burning incense(S) to other gods.(T) 6 Therefore, my fierce anger was poured out;(U) it raged against the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem and made them the desolate ruins(V) they are today.
7 “Now this is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Why bring such great disaster(W) on yourselves by cutting off from Judah the men and women,(X) the children and infants, and so leave yourselves without a remnant?(Y) 8 Why arouse my anger with what your hands have made,(Z) burning incense(AA) to other gods in Egypt,(AB) where you have come to live?(AC) You will destroy yourselves and make yourselves a curse[a] and an object of reproach(AD) among all the nations on earth. 9 Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your ancestors(AE) and by the kings(AF) and queens(AG) of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives(AH) in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem?(AI) 10 To this day they have not humbled(AJ) themselves or shown reverence,(AK) nor have they followed my law(AL) and the decrees(AM) I set before you and your ancestors.(AN)
11 “Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty,(AO) the God of Israel, says: I am determined to bring disaster(AP) on you and to destroy all Judah. 12 I will take away the remnant(AQ) of Judah who were determined to go to Egypt to settle there. They will all perish in Egypt; they will fall by the sword or die from famine. From the least to the greatest,(AR) they will die by sword or famine.(AS) They will become a curse and an object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach.(AT) 13 I will punish(AU) those who live in Egypt with the sword,(AV) famine and plague,(AW) as I punished Jerusalem. 14 None of the remnant of Judah who have gone to live in Egypt will escape or survive to return to the land of Judah, to which they long to return and live; none will return except a few fugitives.”(AX)
15 Then all the men who knew that their wives(AY) were burning incense(AZ) to other gods, along with all the women(BA) who were present—a large assembly—and all the people living in Lower and Upper Egypt,(BB) said to Jeremiah, 16 “We will not listen(BC) to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord!(BD) 17 We will certainly do everything we said we would:(BE) We will burn incense(BF) to the Queen of Heaven(BG) and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials(BH) did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.(BI) At that time we had plenty of food(BJ) and were well off and suffered no harm.(BK) 18 But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and pouring out drink offerings(BL) to her, we have had nothing and have been perishing by sword and famine.(BM)”
19 The women added, “When we burned incense(BN) to the Queen of Heaven(BO) and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands(BP) know that we were making cakes(BQ) impressed with her image(BR) and pouring out drink offerings to her?”
20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, both men and women, who were answering him, 21 “Did not the Lord remember(BS) and call to mind the incense(BT) burned in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem(BU) by you and your ancestors,(BV) your kings and your officials and the people of the land?(BW) 22 When the Lord could no longer endure(BX) your wicked actions and the detestable things you did, your land became a curse(BY) and a desolate waste(BZ) without inhabitants, as it is today.(CA) 23 Because you have burned incense and have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed him or followed(CB) his law or his decrees(CC) or his stipulations, this disaster(CD) has come upon you, as you now see.”(CE)
24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including the women,(CF) “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah in Egypt.(CG) 25 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You and your wives(CH) have done what you said you would do when you promised, ‘We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.’(CI)
“Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!(CJ) 26 But hear the word of the Lord, all you Jews living in Egypt:(CK) ‘I swear(CL) by my great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that no one from Judah living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name or swear, “As surely as the Sovereign(CM) Lord lives.”(CN) 27 For I am watching(CO) over them for harm,(CP) not for good; the Jews in Egypt will perish(CQ) by sword and famine(CR) until they are all destroyed.(CS) 28 Those who escape the sword(CT) and return to the land of Judah from Egypt will be very few.(CU) Then the whole remnant(CV) of Judah who came to live in Egypt will know whose word will stand(CW)—mine or theirs.(CX)
29 “‘This will be the sign(CY) to you that I will punish(CZ) you in this place,’ declares the Lord, ‘so that you will know that my threats of harm against you will surely stand.’(DA) 30 This is what the Lord says: ‘I am going to deliver Pharaoh(DB) Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies who want to kill him, just as I gave Zedekiah(DC) king of Judah into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the enemy who wanted to kill him.’”(DD)

Denunciation of Persistent Idolatry
44 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews that dwelt in the land of Egypt, at Migdol, at Tah′panhes, at Memphis, and in the land of Pathros, 2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the evil that I brought upon Jerusalem and upon all the cities of Judah. Behold, this day they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, 3 because of the wickedness which they committed, provoking me to anger, in that they went to burn incense and serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers. 4 Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, ‘Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate!’ 5 But they did not listen or incline their ear, to turn from their wickedness and burn no incense to other gods. 6 Therefore my wrath and my anger were poured forth and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they became a waste and a desolation, as at this day. 7 And now thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil against yourselves, to cut off from you man and woman, infant and child, from the midst of Judah, leaving you no remnant? 8 Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live, that you may be cut off and become a curse and a taunt among all the nations of the earth? 9 Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, the wickedness of the kings of Judah, the wickedness of their[a] wives, your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not humbled themselves even to this day, nor have they feared, nor walked in my law and my statutes which I set before you and before your fathers.
11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, to cut off all Judah. 12 I will take the remnant of Judah who have set their faces to come to the land of Egypt to live, and they shall all be consumed; in the land of Egypt they shall fall; by the sword and by famine they shall be consumed; from the least to the greatest, they shall die by the sword and by famine; and they shall become an execration, a horror, a curse, and a taunt. 13 I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, 14 so that none of the remnant of Judah who have come to live in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive or return to the land of Judah, to which they desire to return to dwell there; for they shall not return, except some fugitives.”
15 Then all the men who knew that their wives had offered incense to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, all the people who dwelt in Pathros in the land of Egypt, answered Jeremiah: 16 “As for the word which you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not listen to you. 17 But we will do everything that we have vowed, burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, as we did, both we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no evil. 18 But since we left off burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out libations to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.” 19 And the women said,[b] “When we burned incense to the queen of heaven and poured out libations to her, was it without our husbands’ approval that we made cakes for her bearing her image and poured out libations to her?”
20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, men and women, all the people who had given him this answer: 21 “As for the incense that you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember it?[c] Did it not come into his mind? 22 The Lord could no longer bear your evil doings and the abominations which you committed; therefore your land has become a desolation and a waste and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day. 23 It is because you burned incense, and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies, that this evil has befallen you, as at this day.”
24 Jeremiah said to all the people and all the women, “Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who are in the land of Egypt, 25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You and your wives have declared with your mouths, and have fulfilled it with your hands, saying, ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have made, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out libations to her.’ Then confirm your vows and perform your vows! 26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says the Lord, that my name shall no more be invoked by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, ‘As the Lord God lives.’ 27 Behold, I am watching over them for evil and not for good; all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end of them. 28 And those who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who came to the land of Egypt to live, shall know whose word will stand, mine or theirs. 29 This shall be the sign to you, says the Lord, that I will punish you in this place, in order that you may know that my words will surely stand against you for evil: 30 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of those who seek his life, as I gave Zedeki′ah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrez′zar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and sought his life.”
