Gods woorden voor de Judeeërs die in Egypte wonen
44 De Heer gaf mij een boodschap voor alle Judeeërs die in Egypte woonden, in Migdol, Tachpanes, Nof[a] en in de streek Patros. 2 "Dit zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël: Jullie hebben zelf alle ellende gezien die Ik over Jeruzalem en de steden van Juda heb laten komen. Want al die steden zijn nu verwoest. Er woont niemand meer. 3 Dat heb Ik gedaan vanwege alle slechte dingen die ze hebben gedaan. Want ze hebben Mij woedend gemaakt met hun offers aan andere goden. Dat zijn goden die zij, jullie en jullie voorouders vroeger niet kenden. 4 Ik heb steeds mijn profeten naar jullie gestuurd met de boodschap: 'Stop daar alsjeblieft mee! Het is verschrikkelijk! Ik haat het!' 5 Maar de mensen wilden niet luisteren. Ze gingen door met het offeren aan andere goden. 6 Daarom ben Ik woedend op hen geworden en heb Ik hen gestraft. Ik heb alle steden van Juda en alle straten van Jeruzalem verwoest tot een puinhoop. Er woont nu niemand meer.
7 Dit zegt de Heer, de God van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël: Waarom doen jullie dit? Het zal jullie je leven kosten. Het is jullie eigen schuld dat alle mannen en vrouwen, kinderen en baby's uit Juda gedood zullen worden. Het is jullie eigen schuld dat er straks niemand meer over is. 8 Want jullie maken Mij nog steeds kwaad met alles wat jullie doen. Want hier in Egypte, waar jullie als vreemdelingen zijn gaan wonen, brengen jullie wéér offers aan andere goden. Daarom zal er niemand van jullie overblijven. De volken die ervan horen, zullen geschokt zijn. 9 Zijn jullie vergeten wat voor slechte dingen jullie ouders, de koningen van Juda, de leiders, jullie zelf en jullie vrouwen hebben gedaan? Zijn jullie vergeten wat ze allemaal hebben gedaan in Juda en in de straten van Jeruzalem? 10 En tot op vandaag hebben jullie Mij niet gezegd dat jullie er spijt van hebben. Jullie hebben nog steeds geen ontzag voor Mij. Jullie houden je nog steeds niet aan de wetten en leefregels die Ik aan jullie en jullie voorouders heb gegeven.
11 Daarom zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël: Ik zal jullie straffen. Ik zal het hele koninkrijk Juda vernietigen. 12 De paar mensen die daarvan zijn overgebleven en die naar Egypte zijn gegaan, zullen allemaal in Egypte sterven. Ze zullen sterven door het zwaard en de honger. Allemaal zullen ze sterven, iedereen van hoog tot laag en van klein tot groot. De mensen die ervan horen, zullen geschokt zijn. 13 Ik zal hen in Egypte straffen zoals Ik Jeruzalem gestraft heb: met het zwaard, de honger en de pest. 14 Ik zal niemand van hen in Egypte overlaten. Het hele overblijfsel van Juda dat als vreemdelingen in Egypte is gaan wonen, zal in Egypte sterven. Ze verlangen wel zo naar Juda, maar op een paar vluchtelingen na zal niemand van hen daar ooit terugkomen."
De Judeeërs aanbidden liever de koningin van de hemel dan de Heer
15 Er stond een grote groep mensen te luisteren. Dat waren de Judeese mannen en vrouwen die in de streek Patros in Egypte waren gaan wonen. De mannen wisten heel goed dat hun vrouwen offers brachten aan andere goden. 16 En ze zeiden tegen mij: "We willen niet luisteren naar wat je namens de Heer tegen ons zegt. 17 We zullen doen wat we zelf willen. We willen offers brengen aan de koningin van de hemel. We zullen wijn aan haar offeren, net zoals wij, onze ouders, onze koningen en onze leiders in Juda en in Jeruzalem vroeger óók deden. Toen hadden we het goed. We hadden genoeg te eten. We waren gelukkig en kenden geen narigheid. 18 Maar sinds we zijn gestopt met de brand-offers en wijn-offers voor de koningin van de hemel, hebben we aan alles gebrek gehad en zijn we gedood door oorlogen en hongersnood." 19 En de vrouwen zeiden: "Onze mannen zijn het ermee eens dat we aan de koningin van de hemel wierook en wijn offeren en broden waarop zij staat afgebeeld."
20 Toen zei ik tegen hen: 21 "Juist omdát jullie vroeger in Juda en in Jeruzalem allemaal, met jullie koningen en leiders, offers brachten aan andere goden, heeft de Heer jullie land verwoest. 22 Want de Heer kon het niet langer verdragen. Jullie deden zulke vreselijke dingen! Dáárom heeft de Heer het land zó zwaar gestraft, dat iedereen die ervan hoort, geschokt is. En dáárom woont er nu helemaal niemand meer. 23 Al deze ellende is jullie overkomen omdat jullie offers brachten aan andere goden en de Heer niet gehoorzaamden. Jullie hebben niet geluisterd naar wat Hij zei. Jullie hebben je niet gehouden aan zijn wetten en leefregels. Daarom is al deze ellende jullie overkomen. 24 Luister nu naar wat de Heer zegt tegen jullie, het handjevol mensen dat van Juda is overgebleven en nu in Egypte woont: 25 Dit zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël: Het is jullie eigen schuld dat al deze ellende jullie overkomen is. Jullie en jullie vrouwen hebben er met jullie woorden en jullie daden zelf voor gezorgd. Jullie hebben gezworen dat jullie aan de koningin van de hemel brand-offers en wijn-offers zullen brengen. Doe nu maar wat jullie gezegd hebben!
26 Luister naar wat de Heer daarover tegen jullie zegt: Let op, Ik zweer bij Mijzelf, zegt de Heer, dat Ik door geen enkele Judeeër in Egypte meer zal worden aanbeden. Niemand van hen zal nog bij Mij zweren. 27 Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat het met hen allemaal slecht afloopt. Ze zullen in Egypte allemaal sterven door het zwaard en de honger, tot er niemand meer van hen over is. 28 Er zal maar een heel klein aantal van hen in leven blijven. Zij zullen naar Juda teruggaan. Het overblijfsel van Juda dat in Egypte is gaan wonen, zal weten wiens woorden werkelijkheid worden: die van Mij of die van hen. 29 Ik zal jullie hier in Egypte straffen, zegt de Heer. En Ik zal jullie een teken geven, waardoor jullie zéker zullen weten dat Ik zal doen wat Ik gezegd heb. 30 Dit is het teken: koning Hofra van Egypte zal verslagen worden door zijn vijanden. Net zoals koning Zedekia van Juda verslagen is door zijn vijand koning Nebukadnezar van Babel."

2 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and, behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwelleth therein,
3 Because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.
4 Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.
5 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense unto other gods.
6 Wherefore my fury and mine anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as at this day.
7 Therefore now thus saith the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;
8 In that ye provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye be gone to dwell, that ye might cut yourselves off, and that ye might be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?
9 Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?
10 They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.
11 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, and to cut off all Judah.
12 And I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed, and fall in the land of Egypt; they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine: they shall die, from the least even unto the greatest, by the sword and by the famine: and they shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.
13 For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:
14 So that none of the remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.
15 Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,
16 As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken unto thee.
17 But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
18 But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
19 And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
20 Then Jeremiah said unto all the people, to the men, and to the women, and to all the people which had given him that answer, saying,
21 The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember them, and came it not into his mind?
22 So that the Lord could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which ye have committed; therefore is your land a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as at this day.
23 Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day.
24 Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah that are in the land of Egypt:
25 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her: ye will surely accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.
26 Therefore hear ye the word of the Lord, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the Lord, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord God liveth.
27 Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them.
28 Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, and all the remnant of Judah, that are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall know whose words shall stand, mine, or their's.
29 And this shall be a sign unto you, saith the Lord, that I will punish you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil:
30 Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will give Pharaohhophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, and that sought his life.

Israelites Will Be Punished in Egypt
44 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who dwell in the land of Egypt, who dwell at (A)Migdol, at (B)Tahpanhes, at (C)Noph,[a] and in the country of (D)Pathros, saying, 2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘You have seen all the calamity that I have brought on Jerusalem and on all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are (E)a desolation, and no one dwells in them, 3 because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke Me to anger, in that they went (F)to burn incense and to (G)serve other gods whom they did not know, they nor you nor your fathers. 4 However (H)I have sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, “Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate!” 5 But they did not listen or incline their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods. 6 So My fury and My anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they [b]are wasted and desolate, as it is this day.’
7 “Now therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Why do you commit this great evil (I)against yourselves, to cut off from you man and woman, child and infant, out of Judah, leaving none to remain, 8 in that you (J)provoke Me to wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have gone to dwell, that you may cut yourselves off and be (K)a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth? 9 Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, the wickedness of the kings of Judah, the wickedness of their wives, your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not been (L)humbled,[c] to this day, nor have they (M)feared; they have not walked in My law or in My statutes that I set before you and your fathers.’
11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, (N)I will set My face against you for catastrophe and for [d]cutting off all Judah. 12 And I will take the remnant of Judah who have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to dwell there, and (O)they shall all be consumed and fall in the land of Egypt. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine. They shall die, from the least to the greatest, by the sword and by famine; and (P)they shall be an oath, an astonishment, a curse and a reproach! 13 (Q)For I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, 14 so that none of the remnant of Judah who have gone into the land of Egypt to dwell there shall escape or survive, lest they return to the land of Judah, to which they (R)desire[e] to return and dwell. For (S)none shall return except those who escape.’ ”
15 Then all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense to other gods, with all the women who stood by, a great multitude, and all the people who dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying: 16 “As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, (T)we will not listen to you! 17 But we will certainly do (U)whatever has gone out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the (V)queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of [f]food, were well-off, and saw no trouble. 18 But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.”
19 The women also said, (W)“And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make cakes for her, to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her without our husbands’ permission?”
20 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the people—the men, the women, and all the people who had given him that answer—saying: 21 “The incense that you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember them, and did it not come into His mind? 22 So the Lord could no longer bear it, because of the evil of your doings and because of the abominations which you committed. Therefore your land is a desolation, an astonishment, a curse, and without an inhabitant, (X)as it is this day. 23 Because you have burned incense and because you have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord or walked in His law, in His statutes or in His testimonies, (Y)therefore this calamity has happened to you, as at this day.”
24 Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people and to all the women, “Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt! 25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: ‘You and your wives have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands, saying, “We will surely keep our vows that we have made, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” You will surely keep your vows and perform your vows!’ 26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: ‘Behold, (Z)I have sworn by My (AA)great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that (AB)My name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, “The Lord God lives.” 27 Behold, I will watch over them for adversity and not for good. And all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt (AC)shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end to them. 28 Yet (AD)a small number who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah; and all the remnant of Judah, who have gone to the land of Egypt to dwell there, shall know whose words will stand, Mine or theirs. 29 And this shall be a sign to you,’ says the Lord, ‘that I will punish you in this place, that you may know that My words will surely (AE)stand against you for adversity.’

6 Därför blev min förtörnelse och vrede utgjuten, och den brann i Juda städer och på Jerusalems gator, så att de blevo ödelagda och förödda, såsom de nu äro.
7 Och nu säger HERREN, härskarornas Gud, Israels Gud, så: Varför bereden I eder själva stor olycka? I utroten ju ur Juda både man och kvinna, både barn och spenabarn bland eder, så att ingen kvarleva av eder kommer att återstå;
8 I förtörnen ju mig genom edra händers verk, i det att I tänden offereld åt andra gudar i Egyptens land, dit I haven kommit, för att bo där såsom främlingar. Härav måste ske att I varden utrotade, och bliven ett exempel som man nämner, när man förbannar, och ett föremål för smälek bland alla jordens folk.
9 Haven I förgätit edra fäders onda gärningar och Juda konungars onda gärningar och deras hustrurs onda gärningar och edra egna onda gärningar och edra hustrurs onda gärningar, vad de gjorde i Juda land och på Jerusalems gator?
10 Ännu i dag äro de icke ödmjukade; de frukta intet och vandra icke efter min lag och mina stadgar, dem som jag förelade eder och edra fäder.
11 Därför säger HERREN Sebaot, Israels Gud, så: Se, jag skall vända mitt ansikte mot eder till eder olycka, till att utrota hela Juda.
12 Och jag skall gripa de kvarblivna av Juda, som hava ställt sin färd till Egyptens land, för att bo där såsom främlingar. Och de skola allasammans förgås, i Egyptens land skola de falla; genom svärd och hunger skola de förgås, både små och stora, ja, genom svärd och hunger skola de dö. Och de skola bliva ett exempel som man nämner, när man förbannar, och ett föremål för häpnad, bannande och smälek.
13 Och jag skall hemsöka dem som bo i Egyptens land, likasom jag hemsökte Jerusalem, med svärd, hunger och pest.
14 Och bland de kvarblivna av Juda, som hava kommit för att bo såsom främlingar där i Egyptens land, skall ingen kunna rädda sig och slippa undan, så att han kan vända tillbaka till Juda land, dit de dock åstunda att få vända tillbaka, för att bo där. Nej, de skola icke få vända tillbaka dit, förutom några få som bliva räddade.»
15 Då svarade alla männen -- vilka väl visste att deras hustrur tände offereld åt andra gudar -- och alla kvinnorna, som stodo där i en stor hop, så ock allt folket som bodde i Egyptens land, i Patros, de svarade Jeremia och sade:
16 »I det som du har talat till oss i HERRENS namn vilja vi icke hörsamma dig,
17 utan vi vilja göra allt vad vår mun har lovat, nämligen tända offereld åt himmelens drottning och utgjuta drickoffer åt henne, såsom vi och våra fader, våra konungar och furstar gjorde i Juda städer och på Jerusalems gator. Då hade vi bröd nog, och det gick oss väl, och vi sågo icke till någon olycka.
18 Men från den stund då vi upphörde att tända offereld åt himmelens drottning och utgjuta drickoffer åt henne hava vi lidit brist på allt, och förgåtts genom svärd och hunger.
19 Och när vi nu tända offereld åt himmelens drottning och utgjuta drickoffer åt henne, är det då utan våra mäns samtycke som vi åt henne göra offerkakor, vilka äro avbilder av henne, och som vi utgjuta drickoffer åt henne?»
20 Men Jeremia sade till allt folket, till männen och kvinnorna och allt folket, som hade givit honom detta svar, han sade:
21 »Förvisso har HERREN kommit ihåg och tänkt på huru I haven tänt offereld i Juda städer och på. Jerusalems gator, både I själva och edra fäder, både edra konungar och furstar och folket i landet.
22 Och HERREN kunde icke längre hava fördrag med eder för edert onda väsendes skull, och för de styggelsers skull som I bedreven, utan edert land blev ödelagt och ett föremål för häpnad och förbannelse, så att ingen kunde bo där, såsom vi nu se.
23 Därför att I tänden offereld och syndaden mot HERREN och icke villen höra HERRENS röst eller vandra efter hans lag, efter hans stadgar och vittnesbörd, därför har denna olycka träffat eder, såsom vi nu se».
24 Och Jeremia sade ytterligare till allt folket och till alla kvinnorna: »Hören HERRENS ord, I alla av Juda, som ären i Egyptens land,
25 Så säger HERREN Sebaot, Israels Gud: I och edra hustrur haven med edra händer fullgjort vad I taladen med eder mun, när I saden: 'Förvisso vilja vi fullgöra de löften som vi gjorde, att tända offereld åt himmelens drottning och utgjuta drickoffer åt henne.' Välan, I mån hålla edra löften och fullgöra edra löften;
26 men hören då också HERRENS ord, I alla av Juda, som bon i Egyptens land: Se, jag svär vid mitt stora namn, säger HERREN, att i hela Egyptens land mitt namn icke mer skall varda nämnt av någon judisk mans mun, så att han säger: 'Så sant Herren, HERREN lever.'
27 Ty se, jag skall vaka över dem, till deras olycka, och icke till deras lycka, och alla män av Juda, som äro i Egyptens land, skola förgås genom svärd och hunger, till dess att de hava fått en ände.
28 Och allenast några som undkomma svärdet skola få vända tillbaka från Egyptens land till Juda land, en ringa hop. Och så skola alla kvarblivna av Juda, som hava kommit till Egyptens land, för att bo där såsom främlingar, få förnimma vilkens ord det är som bliver beståndande, mitt eller deras.
29 Och detta skall för eder vara tecknet till att jag skall hemsöka eder på denna ort, säger HERREN, och I skolen så förnimma att mina ord om eder förvisso skola bliva beståndande, eder till olycka:
30 Så säger HERREN: Se, jag skall giva Farao Hofra, konungen i Egypten i hans fienders hand och i de mäns hand, som stå efter hans liv, likasom jag har givit Sidkia, Juda konung, i Nebukadressars, den babyloniske konungens, hand, hans som var hans fiende, och som stod efter hans liv.»
