Jeremia bij Johanan
42 Toen kwamen Johanan, Azarja de zoon van Hosaja en alle anderen naar mij toe. 2 Ze vroegen: "Wilt u alstublieft bidden voor ons en voor dit handjevol mensen dat is overgebleven. Want zoals u ziet is er van ons volk maar een heel klein aantal mensen overgebleven. 3 Bid alstublieft voor ons tot uw Heer God. Vraag Hem waar we naartoe moeten en wat we moeten doen." 4 Ik antwoordde: "Dat is goed. Ik zal het jullie Heer God gaan vragen. En ik zal jullie het hele antwoord van de Heer vertellen. Ik zal niets verzwijgen." 5 Toen zeiden ze: "We zweren bij de Heer dat we alles zullen doen wat uw Heer God zal zeggen. 6 Wat het ook is, we zullen het doen. Want als we onze Heer God gehoorzamen, zal het goed met ons gaan."
7 Na tien dagen gaf de Heer mij antwoord. 8 Toen liet ik Johanan, de andere aanvoerders en alle andere mensen bij mij komen. 9 Ik zei tegen hen: "Dit zegt de Heer, de God van Israël, aan Wie ik voor jullie om raad moest vragen. 10 De Heer zegt: Als jullie in dit land blijven, zal Ik jullie opbouwen, en niet afbreken. Ik zal jullie daar planten, en niet uitrukken. Want Ik heb mijn plannen veranderd en zal jullie geen kwaad meer doen. 11 Jullie hoeven niet bang te zijn voor de koning van Babel, zegt de Heer. Want Ik zal met jullie zijn en jullie redden. 12 Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat hij medelijden met jullie zal hebben. Jullie zullen van hem in dit land mogen blijven.
13 Maar stel dat jullie zeggen: 'We willen niet in dit land blijven. We willen niet doen wat onze Heer God zegt. 14 We willen liever naar Egypte gaan. Daar zullen we in vrede kunnen wonen en geen honger hoeven te lijden.' 15 Luister dan nu naar wat de Heer zegt, overblijfsel van Juda! Dit zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël: Als jullie naar Egypte vertrekken en daar als vreemdelingen gaan wonen, 16 zal de oorlog waar jullie voor vluchten, jullie juist inhalen. En de honger waar jullie bang voor zijn, zal jullie daarheen achtervolgen. Dan zullen jullie in Egypte sterven. 17 Iedereen die naar Egypte gaat om daar als vreemdeling te gaan wonen, zal daar sterven door het zwaard, de honger of de pest. Niemand van jullie zal ontsnappen aan de rampen die Ik dan over jullie laat komen. 18 Want dit zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël: In mijn woede en mijn boosheid heb Ik de bewoners van Jeruzalem gestraft. Net zó zal Ik ook jullie in mijn woede en mijn boosheid straffen als jullie naar Egypte gaan. Alle volken zullen geschokt zijn over wat er met jullie gebeurt. Ze zullen jullie naam als een vervloeking gebruiken. En jullie zullen hier nooit meer terugkomen."
19 Ik zei tegen hen: "Dit is wat de Heer tegen jullie zegt, overblijfsel van Juda! Ga dus niet naar Egypte, want dat zal jullie je leven kosten.[a] Ik wil jullie heel ernstig waarschuwen. 20 Jullie hebben me gevraagd om de Heer God voor jullie om raad te vragen. Ik moest jullie zijn antwoord vertellen. Jullie hebben gezworen dat jullie zouden doen wat de Heer God jullie zou zeggen. Maar jullie hebben jezelf voor de gek gehouden. 21 Want nu ik jullie vandaag het antwoord van de Heer God vertel, willen jullie niet luisteren. Jullie willen niet doen wat Hij zegt. 22 Daarom zullen jullie gedood worden door het zwaard, de honger en de pest in het land waar jullie als vreemdelingen willen gaan wonen. Dat staat vast."

42 Then (A)all the commanders of the forces, and (B)Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah the son of (C)Hoshaiah, and all the people (D)from the least to the greatest, came near 2 and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Let (E)our plea for mercy come before you, and (F)pray to the Lord your God for us, for all (G)this remnant—(H)because we are left with but a few, as your eyes see us— 3 that (I)the Lord your God may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do.” 4 Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your request, and (J)whatever the Lord answers you I will tell you. (K)I will keep nothing back from you.” 5 Then they said to Jeremiah, (L)“May the Lord be a true and (M)faithful witness against us (N)if we do not act according to all the word (O)with which the Lord your God sends you to us. 6 Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, (P)that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”
7 (Q)At the end of ten days the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. 8 Then he summoned (R)Johanan the son of Kareah and (S)all the commanders of the forces who were with him, and all the people (T)from the least to the greatest, 9 and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, (U)to whom you sent me to present your plea for mercy before him: 10 If you will remain in this land, (V)then I will build you up and not pull you down; I will plant you, and not pluck you up; (W)for I relent of the disaster that I did to you. 11 (X)Do not fear the king of Babylon, (Y)of whom you are afraid. (Z)Do not fear him, declares the Lord, (AA)for I am with you, to save you and to deliver you from his hand. 12 (AB)I will grant you mercy, that he may have mercy on you and let you remain in your own land. 13 (AC)But if you say, ‘We will not remain in this land,’ disobeying the voice of the Lord your God 14 and saying, ‘No, (AD)we will go to the land of Egypt, where we shall not see war or (AE)hear the sound of the trumpet or (AF)be hungry for bread, and we will dwell there,’ 15 then hear the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AG)If you set your faces to enter Egypt (AH)and go to live there, 16 then the sword (AI)that you fear shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine of which you are afraid shall follow close after you to Egypt, (AJ)and there you shall die. 17 All the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to live there shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. They shall have (AK)no remnant or survivor from the disaster that I will bring upon them.
18 “For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AL)As my anger and my wrath were poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. (AM)You shall become an execration, a horror, a curse, and a taunt. You shall see this place no more. 19 The Lord has said to you, O remnant of Judah, (AN)‘Do not go to Egypt.’ (AO)Know for a certainty that I have warned you this day 20 that you have gone astray at the cost of your lives. (AP)For you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, (AQ)‘Pray for us to the Lord our God, and (AR)whatever the Lord our God says, declare to us and we will do it.’ 21 And I have this day declared it to you, but you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God in anything (AS)that he sent me to tell you. 22 (AT)Now therefore know for a certainty that you shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go to live.”

The Flight to Egypt Forbidden
42 Now all the captains of the forces, (A)Johanan the son of Kareah, Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, from the least to the greatest, came near 2 and said to Jeremiah the prophet, (B)“Please, let our petition be acceptable to you, and (C)pray for us to the Lord your God, for all this remnant (since we are left but (D)a few of many, as you can see), 3 that the Lord your God may show us (E)the way in which we should walk and the thing we should do.”
4 Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard. Indeed, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words, and it shall be, that (F)whatever the Lord answers you, I will declare it to you. I will (G)keep nothing back from you.”
5 So they said to Jeremiah, (H)“Let the Lord be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not do according to everything which the Lord your God sends us by you. 6 Whether it is [a]pleasing or [b]displeasing, we will (I)obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we send you, (J)that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”
7 And it happened after ten days that the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. 8 Then he called Johanan the son of Kareah, all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest, 9 and said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition before Him: 10 ‘If you will still remain in this land, then (K)I will build you and not pull you down, and I will plant you and not pluck you up. For I (L)relent concerning the disaster that I have brought upon you. 11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid; do not be afraid of him,’ says the Lord, (M)‘for I am with you, to save you and deliver you from his hand. 12 And (N)I will show you mercy, that he may have mercy on you and cause you to return to your own land.’
13 “But if (O)you say, ‘We will not dwell in this land,’ disobeying the voice of the Lord your God, 14 saying, ‘No, but we will go to the land of (P)Egypt where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor be hungry for bread, and there we will dwell’— 15 Then hear now the word of the Lord, O remnant of Judah! Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘If you (Q)wholly[c] set (R)your faces to enter Egypt, and go to dwell there, 16 then it shall be that the (S)sword which you feared shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt; the famine of which you were afraid shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there you shall die. 17 So shall it be with all the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to dwell there. They shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. And (T)none of them shall remain or escape from the disaster that I will bring upon them.’
18 “For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘As My anger and My fury have been (U)poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so will My fury be poured out on you when you enter Egypt. And (V)you shall be an oath, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.’
19 “The Lord has said concerning you, O remnant of Judah, (W)‘Do not go to Egypt!’ Know certainly that I have [d]admonished you this day. 20 For you [e]were hypocrites in your hearts when you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to the Lord our God, and according to all that the Lord your God says, so declare to us and we will do it.’ 21 And I have this day declared it to you, but you have (X)not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God, or anything which He has sent you by me. 22 Now therefore, know certainly that you (Y)shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go to dwell.”

42 Då trädde alla krigshövitsmännen fram, jämte Johanan, Kareas son, och Jesanja, Hosajas son, så ock allt folket, både små och stora,
2 och sade till profeten Jeremia: »Värdes upptaga vår bön: bed för oss till HERREN, din Gud, för hela denna kvarleva -- ty vi äro blott några få, som hava blivit kvar av många; du ser med egna ögon att det är så med oss.
3 Må så HERREN, din Gud, kungöra för oss vilken väg vi böra gå, och vad vi hava att göra.»
4 Profeten Jeremia svarade dem: »Jag vill lyssna till eder. Ja, jag vill bedja till HERREN, eder Gud, såsom I haven begärt. Och vadhelst HERREN svarar eder skall jag förkunna för eder; intet skall jag undanhålla för eder.»
5 Då sade de till Jeremia: »HERREN vare ett sannfärdigt och osvikligt vittne mot oss, om vi icke i alla stycken göra efter det ord varmed HERREN, din Gud, sänder dig till oss.
6 Det må vara gott eller ont, så vilja vi höra HERRENS, vår Guds, röst, hans som vi sända dig till; på det att det må gå oss väl, när vi höra HERRENS, vår Guds, röst.»
7 Och tio dagar därefter kom HERRENS ord till Jeremia.
8 Då kallade han till sig Johanan, Kareas son, och alla de krigshövitsmän som voro med honom, och allt folket, både små och stora,
9 och sade till dem: Så säger HERREN, Israels Gud, han som I haven sänt mig till, för att jag skulle hos honom bönfalla för eder:
10 Om I stannen kvar i detta land, så skall jag uppbygga eder och ej mer slå eder ned; jag skall plantera eder och ej mer upprycka eder. Ty jag ångrar det onda som jag har gjort eder.
11 Frukten icke mer för konungen i Babel, som I nu frukten för, frukten icke för honom, säger HERREN. Ty jag är med eder och vill frälsa eder och rädda eder ur hans hand.
12 Jag vill låta eder finna barmhärtighet; ja, han skall bliva barmhärtig mot eder och låta eder vända tillbaka till edert land.
13 Men om I sägen: »Vi vilja icke stanna i detta land», om I alltså icke hören HERRENS, eder Guds, röst,
14 utan tänken: »Nej, vi vilja begiva oss till Egyptens land, där vi slippa att se krig och höra basunljud och hungra efter bröd, där vilja vi bo» --
15 välan, hören då HERRENS ord, I kvarblivna av Juda: Så säger HERREN Sebaot, Israels Gud: Om I verkligen ställen eder färd till Egypten och kommen dit, för att bo där såsom främlingar,
16 så skall svärdet, som I frukten för, hinna upp eder där i Egyptens land, och hungersnöden, som I rädens för, skall följa efter eder dit till Egypten, och där skolen I dö.
17 Ja, de människor som ställa sin färd till Egypten, för att bo där, skola alla dö genom svärd, hunger och pest, och ingen av dem skall slippa undan och kunna rädda sig från den olycka som jag skall låta komma över dem.
18 Ty så säger HERREN Sebaot, Israels Gud: Likasom min vrede och förtörnelse har utgjutit sig över Jerusalems invånare, så skall ock min förtörnelse utgjuta sig över eder, om I begiven eder till Egypten, och I skolen bliva ett exempel som man nämner, när man förbannar, och ett föremål för häpnad, bannande och smälek, och I skolen aldrig mer få se denna ort.
19 Ja, HERREN säger till eder, I kvarblivna av Juda: Begiven eder icke till Egypten. Märken väl att jag i dag har varnat eder.
20 Ty I bedrogen eder själva, när I sänden mig till HERREN, eder Gud, och saden: »Bed för oss till HERREN, vår Gud; och vadhelst HERREN, vår Gud, säger, det må du förkunna för oss, så vilja vi göra det.»
21 Jag har nu i dag förkunnat det för eder. Men I haven icke velat höra HERRENS, eder Guds, röst, i allt det varmed han har sänt mig till eder.
22 Så veten nu att I skolen dö genom svärd, hunger och pest, på den ort dit I åstunden att komma, för att bo där såsom främlingar.
