4 ”Om du vill vända tillbaka, Israel, säger Herren,
så vänd om till mig.
Gör dig av med dina vidriga avgudar,
ta bort dem ur min åsyn
och sluta upp med att irra omkring.
2 Du ska svära i sanning, rätt och rättfärdighet:
’Så sant Herren lever.’
Genom honom ska folken bli välsignade
och lovprisa honom.”
3 Så säger Herren
till männen i Juda och till Jerusalem:
”Bryt er ny mark
och så inte bland törnen.
4 Omskär er för Herren,
skär bort era hjärtans förhud,
ni Judas män och Jerusalems befolkning.
Annars bryter min vrede ut
och brinner som en eld
för era onda gärningars skull.
Den kan ingen släcka.
Kommande dom
5 Förkunna i Juda och kungör i Jerusalem,
blås i hornet i landet,
ropa högt och säg:
’Låt oss samlas
och gå till de befästa städerna!’
6 Res ett banér mot Sion!
Sök skydd, dröj inte kvar!
Jag låter olyckan komma från norr
med en stor förödelse.”
7 Ett lejon har kommit fram ur sitt snår,
en folkens förgörare är på väg.
Han har gått ut ur sitt tillhåll
för att ödelägga ditt land.
Dina städer ska läggas i ruiner,
där ingen kan bo.
8 Klä er i säcktyg,
sörj och klaga,
för Herrens flammande vrede
har inte vänt sig från oss.
9 ”På den dagen, säger Herren,
kommer kungen och furstarna att bli modlösa,
prästerna slås av skräck
och profeterna ska stå förstummade.”
10 Då sa jag:[a] ”Men min Herre, Herre, hur har du inte bedragit detta folk och Jerusalem! Du lovade oss fred, men nu har vi svärdet riktat mot strupen.”
11 Vid den tiden ska man säga till detta folk och till Jerusalem: ”En brännande vind från de kala höjderna i öknen sveper ner mot dottern mitt folk, inte för att kasta eller rensa säd, 12 utan en starkare vind än så ska jag låta komma. Nu ska jag uttala mina domar mot dem.”
13 Se, som moln stiger han upp,
och hans vagnar är som en stormvind.
Hans hästar är snabbare än örnar.
Ve oss, vi är förlorade!
14 Tvätta bort ondskan från ditt hjärta, Jerusalem,
för att du ska bli räddad.
Hur länge ska dina onda tankar
bo kvar inom dig?
15 En röst förkunnar från Dan,
meddelar olycka från Efraims berg.
16 ”Förkunna för folken, tala om för Jerusalem:
’Belägrarna kommer från ett avlägset land
och höjer sina stridsrop mot Juda städer.
17 Som vakterna kring ett fält
omringar de henne.
För hon har varit upprorisk mot mig, säger Herren.’ ”
18 ”Ditt levnadssätt och dina gärningar
har dragit det här över dig.
Det är för din ondska
som det bittra drabbar dig ända in i hjärtat.”
19 Mitt inre, mitt inre!
Jag vrider mig i plågor,
och mitt hjärta bankar.
Jag kan inte hålla mig stilla,
för jag har hört hornstötar och krigsrop.
20 Våg efter våg av förstörelse,
hela landet ligger i ruiner.
Plötsligt förstörs mina tält,
på ett ögonblick mina tältdukar.
21 Hur länge måste jag se banéret
och höra ljudet av hornen?
22 ”Mitt folk är dumt,
de känner mig inte.
De är barn utan förstånd
och fattar ingenting.
De har vishet nog att göra det onda
men ingen kunskap att göra det goda.”
23 Jag såg på jorden,
och den var öde och tom,
på himlen, och där fanns inget ljus.[b]
24 Jag såg på bergen som skälvde
och höjderna som skakade.
25 Jag såg att det inte fanns någon människa
och att himlens fåglar hade flytt.
26 Jag såg att det bördiga landet var ödemark,
och dess städer låg i ruiner inför Herren,
för hans brinnande vrede.
27 För så säger Herren:
”Hela jorden ska bli ödelagd,
även om jag inte ska utplåna den helt.
28 Därför sörjer jorden
och himlen där ovan mörknar.
För jag har talat och ändrar mig inte
jag har beslutat och kommer inte att ångra mig.”
29 För ryttarnas och bågskyttarnas larm
tar alla i landet till flykten,
man gömmer sig inne i skogssnåren
och uppe bland klipporna.
Alla städer ligger övergivna,
ingen bor kvar i dem.
30 Vad tänker du göra, du ödelagda?
Om du än klär dig i scharlakansrött,
tar på dig guldsmycken
och förstorar ögonen med smink,
gör du dig vacker förgäves.
Dina älskare föraktar dig
och står efter ditt liv.
31 Jag hör rop som från en kvinna i födslosmärtor,
ångestskrik som när hon ska föda sitt första barn.
Det är dotter Sions rop.
Hon flämtar och sträcker ut sina händer:
”Ve mig, mitt liv tynar bort inför mördare!”

Jeremiah Laments over Judah
4 “If you will return, O Israel,” says the Lord,
(A)“Return to Me;
And if you will put away your abominations out of My sight,
Then you shall not be moved.
2 (B)And you shall swear, ‘The Lord lives,’
(C)In truth, in [a]judgment, and in righteousness;
(D)The nations shall bless themselves in Him,
And in Him they shall (E)glory.”
3 For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:
(F)“Break up your [b]fallow ground,
And (G)do not sow among thorns.
4 (H)Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
And take away the foreskins of your hearts,
You men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Lest My fury come forth like fire,
And burn so that no one can quench it,
Because of the evil of your doings.”
An Imminent Invasion
5 Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say:
(I)“Blow the trumpet in the land;
Cry, ‘Gather together,’
And say, (J)‘Assemble yourselves,
And let us go into the fortified cities.’
6 Set up the [c]standard toward Zion.
Take refuge! Do not delay!
For I will bring disaster from the (K)north,
And great destruction.”
7 (L)The lion has come up from his thicket,
And (M)the destroyer of nations is on his way.
He has gone forth from his place
(N)To make your land desolate.
Your cities will be laid waste,
Without inhabitant.
8 For this, (O)clothe yourself with sackcloth,
Lament and wail.
For the fierce anger of the Lord
Has not turned back from us.
9 “And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord,
“That the heart of the king shall perish,
And the heart of the princes;
The priests shall be astonished,
And the prophets shall wonder.”
10 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God!
(P)Surely You have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem,
(Q)Saying, ‘You shall have peace,’
Whereas the sword reaches to the [d]heart.”
11 At that time it will be said
To this people and to Jerusalem,
(R)“A dry wind of the desolate heights blows in the wilderness
Toward the daughter of My people—
Not to fan or to cleanse—
12 A wind too strong for these will come for Me;
Now (S)I will also speak judgment against them.”
13 “Behold, he shall come up like clouds,
And (T)his chariots like a whirlwind.
(U)His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for we are plundered!”
14 O Jerusalem, (V)wash your heart from wickedness,
That you may be saved.
How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?
15 For a voice declares (W)from Dan
And proclaims [e]affliction from Mount Ephraim:
16 “Make mention to the nations,
Yes, proclaim against Jerusalem,
That watchers come from a (X)far country
And raise their voice against the cities of Judah.
17 (Y)Like keepers of a field they are against her all around,
Because she has been rebellious against Me,” says the Lord.
18 “Your(Z) ways and your doings
Have procured these things for you.
This is your wickedness,
Because it is bitter,
Because it reaches to your heart.”
Sorrow for the Doomed Nation
19 O my (AA)soul, my soul!
I am pained in my very heart!
My heart makes a noise in me;
I cannot hold my peace,
Because you have heard, O my soul,
The sound of the trumpet,
The alarm of war.
20 (AB)Destruction upon destruction is cried,
For the whole land is plundered.
Suddenly (AC)my tents are plundered,
And my curtains in a moment.
21 How long will I see the [f]standard,
And hear the sound of the trumpet?
22 “For My people are foolish,
They have not known Me.
They are [g]silly children,
And they have no understanding.
(AD)They are wise to do evil,
But to do good they have no knowledge.”
23 (AE)I beheld the earth, and indeed it was (AF)without form, and void;
And the heavens, they had no light.
24 (AG)I beheld the mountains, and indeed they trembled,
And all the hills moved back and forth.
25 I beheld, and indeed there was no man,
And (AH)all the birds of the heavens had fled.
26 I beheld, and indeed the fruitful land was a (AI)wilderness,
And all its cities were broken down
At the presence of the Lord,
By His fierce anger.
27 For thus says the Lord:
“The whole land shall be desolate;
(AJ)Yet I will not make a full end.
28 For this (AK)shall the earth mourn,
And (AL)the heavens above be black,
Because I have spoken.
I have (AM)purposed and (AN)will not relent,
Nor will I turn back from it.
29 The whole city shall flee from the noise of the horsemen and bowmen.
They shall go into thickets and climb up on the rocks.
Every city shall be forsaken,
And not a man shall dwell in it.
30 “And when you are plundered,
What will you do?
Though you clothe yourself with crimson,
Though you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold,
(AO)Though you enlarge your eyes with paint,
In vain you will make yourself fair;
(AP)Your lovers will despise you;
They will seek your life.
31 “For I have heard a voice as of a woman in [h]labor,
The anguish as of her who brings forth her first child,
The voice of the daughter of Zion bewailing herself;
She (AQ)spreads her hands, saying,
‘Woe is me now, for my soul is [i]weary
Because of murderers!’

4 “If you, Israel, will return,(A)
then return to me,”
declares the Lord.
“If you put your detestable idols(B) out of my sight
and no longer go astray,
2 and if in a truthful, just and righteous way
you swear,(C) ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’(D)
then the nations will invoke blessings(E) by him
and in him they will boast.(F)”
3 This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem:
“Break up your unplowed ground(G)
and do not sow among thorns.(H)
4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
circumcise your hearts,(I)
you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
or my wrath(J) will flare up and burn like fire(K)
because of the evil(L) you have done—
burn with no one to quench(M) it.
Disaster From the North
5 “Announce in Judah and proclaim(N) in Jerusalem and say:
‘Sound the trumpet(O) throughout the land!’
Cry aloud and say:
‘Gather together!
Let us flee to the fortified cities!’(P)
6 Raise the signal(Q) to go to Zion!
Flee for safety without delay!
For I am bringing disaster(R) from the north,(S)
even terrible destruction.”
7 A lion(T) has come out of his lair;(U)
a destroyer(V) of nations has set out.
He has left his place
to lay waste(W) your land.
Your towns will lie in ruins(X)
without inhabitant.
8 So put on sackcloth,(Y)
lament(Z) and wail,
for the fierce anger(AA) of the Lord
has not turned away from us.
9 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
“the king and the officials will lose heart,(AB)
the priests will be horrified,
and the prophets will be appalled.”(AC)
10 Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived(AD) this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’(AE) when the sword is at our throats!”
11 At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind(AF) from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse; 12 a wind(AG) too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments(AH) against them.”
13 Look! He advances like the clouds,(AI)
his chariots(AJ) come like a whirlwind,(AK)
his horses(AL) are swifter than eagles.(AM)
Woe to us! We are ruined!(AN)
14 Jerusalem, wash(AO) the evil from your heart and be saved.(AP)
How long(AQ) will you harbor wicked thoughts?
15 A voice is announcing from Dan,(AR)
proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.(AS)
16 “Tell this to the nations,
proclaim concerning Jerusalem:
‘A besieging army is coming from a distant land,(AT)
raising a war cry(AU) against the cities of Judah.(AV)
17 They surround(AW) her like men guarding a field,
because she has rebelled(AX) against me,’”
declares the Lord.
18 “Your own conduct and actions(AY)
have brought this on you.(AZ)
This is your punishment.
How bitter(BA) it is!
How it pierces to the heart!”
19 Oh, my anguish, my anguish!(BB)
I writhe in pain.(BC)
Oh, the agony of my heart!
My heart pounds(BD) within me,
I cannot keep silent.(BE)
For I have heard the sound of the trumpet;(BF)
I have heard the battle cry.(BG)
20 Disaster follows disaster;(BH)
the whole land lies in ruins.(BI)
In an instant my tents(BJ) are destroyed,
my shelter in a moment.
21 How long must I see the battle standard(BK)
and hear the sound of the trumpet?(BL)
22 “My people are fools;(BM)
they do not know me.(BN)
They are senseless children;
they have no understanding.(BO)
They are skilled in doing evil;(BP)
they know not how to do good.”(BQ)
23 I looked at the earth,
and it was formless and empty;(BR)
and at the heavens,
and their light(BS) was gone.
24 I looked at the mountains,
and they were quaking;(BT)
all the hills were swaying.
25 I looked, and there were no people;
every bird in the sky had flown away.(BU)
26 I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;(BV)
all its towns lay in ruins(BW)
before the Lord, before his fierce anger.(BX)
27 This is what the Lord says:
“The whole land will be ruined,(BY)
though I will not destroy(BZ) it completely.
28 Therefore the earth will mourn(CA)
and the heavens above grow dark,(CB)
because I have spoken and will not relent,(CC)
I have decided and will not turn back.(CD)”
29 At the sound of horsemen and archers(CE)
every town takes to flight.(CF)
Some go into the thickets;
some climb up among the rocks.(CG)
All the towns are deserted;(CH)
no one lives in them.
