Jeremia profeterar om Jerusalems förstöring och fängslas
37 Sidkia, Josias son, blev kung i stället för Konja, Jojakims son, ty Nebukadressar, kungen i Babel, gjorde honom till kung i Juda land. 2 Men varken han eller hans tjänare eller folket i landet lyssnade till de Herrens ord som han talade genom profeten Jeremia. 3 Ändå sände kung Sidkia i väg Jehukal, Selemjas son, och prästen Sefanja, Maasejas son, med detta bud till profeten Jeremia: "Bed för oss till Herren, vår Gud." 4 Jeremia gick ut och in bland folket, ty man hade ännu inte satt honom i fängelse. 5 Faraos här hade dragit ut från Egypten, och när kaldeerna som belägrade Jerusalem hade fått höra ryktet om dem, hade de dragit sig tillbaka från Jerusalem.
6 Då kom Herrens ord till profeten Jeremia. Han sade: 7 Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: Detta skall ni svara Juda kung, som har sänt er till mig för att fråga mig: "Se, faraos här som har dragit ut till er hjälp skall vända tillbaka till sitt land Egypten. 8 Sedan skall kaldeerna återvända och belägra denna stad, inta den och bränna upp den i eld. 9 Så säger Herren: Bedra inte er själva genom att tänka: Kaldeerna skall helt säkert dra sig tillbaka ifrån oss. Ty de skall inte ge sig av. 10 Även om ni skulle slå kaldeernas hela här som strider mot er så att endast några sårade män blev kvar av dem, så skulle de resa sig upp var och en i sitt tält och bränna upp denna stad i eld."
11 Men när kaldeernas här hade dragit sig tillbaka från Jerusalem på grund av faraos här, 12 ville Jeremia lämna Jerusalem och bege sig till Benjamins land för att där ta i besittning sin jordlott bland folket. 13 När han kom till Benjaminsporten greps han av vaktens befälhavare Jiria, son till Selemja, son till Hananja, som sade: "Du vill gå över till kaldeerna." 14 Jeremia svarade: "Det är inte sant. Jag vill inte gå över till kaldeerna." Men Jiria hörde inte på honom utan grep Jeremia och förde honom till furstarna. 15 Dessa blev förbittrade på Jeremia och lät gissla honom och satte honom i förvar i skrivaren Jonatans hus som gjorts om till fängelse.
16 När Jeremia hade kommit in i fängelsehålan, ner i fångvalven, och varit där en lång tid, 17 lät kung Sidkia hämta honom, och hemma hos sig frågade kungen honom i hemlighet: "Har det kommit något ord från Herren?" Jeremia svarade: "Ja." Och han sade vidare: "Du skall överlämnas i den babyloniske kungens hand." 18 Sedan frågade Jeremia kung Sidkia: "På vad sätt har jag handlat orätt mot dig, dina tjänare och detta folk, eftersom ni har satt mig i fängelse? 19 Och var finns nu era profeter som profeterade för er: Kungen i Babel skall inte anfalla er och detta land? 20 Så hör mig nu, min herre konung. Lyssna till min bön och sänd mig inte tillbaka till skrivaren Jonatans hus, för då kommer jag att dö där." 21 Då befallde kung Sidkia att man skulle hålla Jeremia i förvar på vaktgården, och man gav honom en kaka bröd om dagen från Bagargatan, till dess det var slut på allt brödet i staden. Och Jeremia blev kvar på vaktgården.

Jeremia fängslas
37 Nebukadnessar, kungen i Babylon, utsåg inte Konja, kung Jojakims son, till ny kung i Juda. I stället valde han Sidkia, Josias son.
2 Men varken kung Sidkia, dennes ämbetsmän eller folket som var kvar i landet lyssnade till vad Herren sa genom sin profet Jeremia.
3 Trots detta skickade kung Sidkia Jehukal, Selemjas son, och prästen Sefanja, Maasejas son, till Jeremia med uppmaningen att han skulle be för dem.
4 Jeremia hade då ännu inte blivit fängslad utan kunde komma och gå som han ville.
5 När besked kom att Faraos armé hade lämnat Egypten för att komma och befria det belägrade Jerusalem, drog sig babylonierna bort från Jerusalem för att möta egyptierna.
6 Då sände Herren detta budskap till Jeremia:
7 Herren, Israels Gud, säger: Säg till kungen i Juda, som skickade efter dig för att fråga mig vad som skulle hända: Faraos armé, som var på väg att undsätta er, ska fly tillbaka till Egypten!
8 Babylonierna kommer tillbaka för att belägra Jerusalem och bränna ner staden till grunden.
9 Låt inte lura er att tro att babylonierna gett sig i väg för gott.
10 Även om ni lyckas slå hela den babyloniska armén, så att det bara finns en handfull överlevande, sårade och kvar i sina tält, ska de ändå stappla ut och besegra er och förvandla denna stad till en brinnande fackla!
11 När den babyloniska armén drog ut för att strida mot Faraos armé,
12 lämnade Jeremia Jerusalem för att gå till Benjamins land och ta i anspråk den mark han hade köpt.
13 Men i Benjaminsporten blev han gripen av en vaktpost, som anklagade honom för att gå över till babylonierna. Vakten som arresterade honom hette Jiria och var son till Selemja och sonson till Hananja.
14 Det är inte sant, utbrast Jeremia. Jag har ingen tanke på att göra något sådant!Men Jiria ville inte höra på honom, utan tog med honom till stadens styresmän.
15-16 De blev rasande på Jeremia, piskade honom och satte honom i arrest i sekreteraren Jonatans hus, som hade byggts om till fängelse. Jeremia fick stanna en lång tid där i en fängelsehåla,
17 men till slut skickade kung Sidkia bud efter honom. I enrum frågade kungen honom om han nyligen fått något budskap från Herren. Ja, det har jag, svarade Jeremia. Du ska bli besegrad av kungen i Babylon!
18 Sedan frågade Jeremia varför han blivit fängslad: Vad har jag egentligen gjort, som förtjänar detta? Vad är det för brott jag har begått? Tala om för mig vad jag har gjort mot dig, dina ämbetsmän eller mot folket?
19 Var är de profeter som påstått att kungen i Babylon inte skulle komma tillbaka?
20 Lyssna, min herre och min kung! Jag ber dig, skicka inte tillbaka mig till fängelset, för då kommer jag att dö där.
21 Då befallde kung Sidkia att Jeremia inte skulle föras tillbaka till fängelsehålan. Han fördes i stället till fängelsegården. Man gav honom bröd varje dag, så länge det fanns något kvar i staden.

37 Zedekiah(A) son of Josiah was made king(B) of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin[a](C) son of Jehoiakim. 2 Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention(D) to the words the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
3 King Zedekiah, however, sent(E) Jehukal(F) son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah(G) son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: “Please pray(H) to the Lord our God for us.”
4 Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.(I) 5 Pharaoh’s army had marched out of Egypt,(J) and when the Babylonians[b] who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew(K) from Jerusalem.(L)
6 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire(M) of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched(N) out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.(O) 8 Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture(P) it and burn(Q) it down.’
9 “This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive(R) yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not! 10 Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian[c] army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn(S) this city down.”
11 After the Babylonian army had withdrawn(T) from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army, 12 Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property(U) among the people there. 13 But when he reached the Benjamin Gate,(V) the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, “You are deserting to the Babylonians!”(W)
14 “That’s not true!” Jeremiah said. “I am not deserting to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested(X) Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15 They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten(Y) and imprisoned(Z) in the house(AA) of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.
16 Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time. 17 Then King Zedekiah sent(AB) for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked(AC) him privately,(AD) “Is there any word from the Lord?”
“Yes,” Jeremiah replied, “you will be delivered(AE) into the hands of the king of Babylon.”
18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What crime(AF) have I committed against you or your attendants or this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where are your prophets(AG) who prophesied to you, ‘The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land’? 20 But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there.”(AH)
21 King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread(AI) in the city was gone.(AJ) So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.(AK)

Zedekiah’s Vain Hope(A)
37 Now King (B)Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. 2 (C)But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land gave heed to the words of the Lord which He spoke by the prophet Jeremiah.
3 And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and (D)Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, (E)“Pray now to the Lord our God for us.” 4 Now Jeremiah was coming and going among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison. 5 Then (F)Pharaoh’s army came up from Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
6 Then the word of the Lord came to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 7 “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, (G)who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: “Behold, Pharaoh’s army which has come up to help you will return to Egypt, to their own land. 8 (H)And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city, and take it and burn it with fire.” ’ 9 Thus says the Lord: ‘Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us,” for they will not depart. 10 (I)For though you had defeated the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, they would rise up, every man in his tent, and burn the city with fire.’ ”
Jeremiah Imprisoned
11 And it happened, when the army of the Chaldeans left the siege of Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army, 12 that Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin to claim his property there among the people. 13 And when he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”
14 Then Jeremiah said, [a]“False! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he did not listen to him.
So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the princes. 15 Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him (J)and put him in prison in the (K)house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.
16 When Jeremiah entered (L)the dungeon and the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days, 17 then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. The king asked him secretly in his house, and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?”
And Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be (M)delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon!”
18 Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What offense have I committed against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison? 19 Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’? 20 Therefore please hear now, O my lord the king. Please, let my petition be accepted before you, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”
21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah (N)to the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread from the bakers’ street, (O)until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

9 Thus saith the Lord; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.
10 For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.
11 And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,
12 Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.
13 And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.
14 Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.
15 Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.
16 When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;
17 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the Lord? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.
18 Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?
19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?
20 Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.
21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
