Varning till Sidkia
34 (A) Detta ord kom till Jeremia från Herren när Babels kung Nebukadressar angrep Jerusalem[a] och alla dess lydstäder, med hela sin här och med alla riken på jorden som lydde under hans välde och med alla folk. Han sade: 2 (B) Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: Gå till Juda kung Sidkia och säg till honom: Så säger Herren: Se, jag ger denna stad i den babyloniske kungens hand och han ska bränna upp den i eld. 3 (C) Själv ska du inte komma undan hans hand, utan du ska gripas och lämnas i hans hand och stå inför Babels kung öga mot öga. Han ska tala med dig ansikte mot ansikte, och du ska komma till Babel.
4 Men hör Herrens ord, du Juda kung Sidkia: Så säger Herren om dig: Du ska inte dö genom svärd. 5 (D) I frid ska du dö. Och liksom man har tänt eldar[b] för dina fäder, kungarna som har varit före dig, så ska man också tända eldar för dig och ropa: ”Ack, ve, herre!” och hålla dödsklagan över dig. För detta har jag talat, säger Herren.
6 Profeten Jeremia sade allt detta till Juda kung Sidkia i Jerusalem, 7 (E) medan den babyloniske kungens här belägrade Jerusalem och de städer som ännu var kvar i Juda – Lakish och Aseka[c]. De var de enda av Juda städer som fortfarande fanns kvar och var befästa.
Brott mot avtalet om att frige slavar
8 Detta ord kom till Jeremia från Herren när kung Sidkia hade slutit ett förbund med allt folket i Jerusalem att de skulle utropa frihet, 9 (F) så att var och en skulle frige sin hebreiske slav och sin hebreiska slavinna och inte ha sin judiske broder till slav. 10 Alla furstarna och allt folket lydde detta, de som hade gått med i förbundet, att var och en skulle frige sin slav och sin slavinna och inte mer ha dem som slavar. De rättade sig efter det och frigav dem. 11 Men efteråt ändrade de sig och tog tillbaka de slavar och slavinnor som de hade frigett och tvingade dem på nytt att bli slavar och slavinnor.
12 Då kom Herrens ord till Jeremia. Han sade: 13 Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: Jag slöt ett förbund med era fäder när jag förde dem ut ur Egyptens land, ut ur träldomshuset. Jag sade: 14 (G) När det har gått sju år ska var och en av er frige sin hebreiske broder[d], som har sålt sig åt dig och tjänat dig i sex år. Du ska då släppa honom fri ur din tjänst.
Men era fäder lyssnade inte på mig och vände inte sina öron till mig. 15 Ni har nyligen vänt om och gjort det som är rätt i mina ögon, när ni utropade frihet, var och en för sin broder. Ni slöt ett förbund om detta inför mig i det hus som är uppkallat efter mitt namn. 16 Men ni har ändrat er och vanhelgat mitt namn. Var och en har tagit tillbaka sin slav och sin slavinna som ni hade släppt fria enligt deras önskan. Nu har ni tvingat dem att bli era slavar och slavinnor igen.
17 Därför säger Herren så: Ni har inte lyssnat på mig och utropat frihet var och en för sin broder och sin nästa. Så nu utropar jag frihet för er, säger Herren, att utlämnas åt svärd, pest och svält. Jag ska göra er till ett avskräckande exempel för alla riken på jorden. 18 (H) Jag ska utlämna de män som har överträtt mitt förbund och inte hållit orden i det förbund de slöt inför mig, när de delade kalven i två stycken[e] och gick mellan dem. 19 Juda furstar och Jerusalems furstar, hovmännen och prästerna och allt folket i landet som gick mellan styckena av kalven, 20 (I) dem ska jag utlämna åt deras fiender, till dem som vill ta deras liv. Och deras döda kroppar ska bli till föda åt himlens fåglar och markens djur. 21 (J) Jag ska utlämna Juda kung Sidkia och hans furstar i deras fienders hand, till dem som vill ta deras liv, och till den babyloniske kungens här som nu har dragit bort[f] ifrån er. 22 (K) Se, jag ska befalla dem, säger Herren, att de vänder tillbaka till denna stad. De ska belägra den, inta den och bränna ner den. Jag ska göra Juda städer till en ödemark där ingen bor.

Sidkia ska landsförvisas
34 Detta budskap kom till Jeremia från Herren, när Nebukadnessar, kungen i Babylon, och alla hans arméer från de olika rikena i hans imperium låg i strid med Jerusalem och Juda städer:
2 Gå och säg till Sidkia, kungen i Juda, att Herren säger: Jag ska ge den här staden till kungen i Babylon, och han ska bränna den.
3 Du ska inte kunna fly. Du kommer att bli tillfångatagen och förd inför kungen i Babylon, och han ska döma dig och låta föra bort dig till fångenskap i Babylon.
4 Men hör här, Sidkia, kung över Juda! Herren säger att du inte kommer att bli dödad av svärd.
5 Du ska få dö lugnt och stilla bland ditt folk. De ska tända rökelse till ditt minne, precis som de gjorde för dina förfäder. De ska sörja dig och säga: Ve oss, vår kung är död! Detta har jag bestämt, säger Herren.
6 Jeremia meddelade alltså kung Sidkia detta.
7 Just då belägrade de babyloniska trupperna Jerusalem, Lakis och Aseka, som var de enda befästa städer som ännu inte fallit.
Påbudet att frige slavar
8 Detta budskap kom till Jeremia från Herren, sedan Sidkia, kungen i Juda, hade befriat alla slavar i Jerusalem.
9 Kungen hade nämligen gett befallning om att alla skulle frige sina judiska slavar, både kvinnor och män. Han hade sagt att ingen skulle vara herre över en annan, utan att alla bland Guds folk var bröder.
10 Furstarna och allt folket hade lytt kungens befallning och frigett sina slavar, men bara tillfälligt,
11 för de ändrade sig och gjorde dem till slavar igen efter en tid.
12 Detta är anledningen till att Herren gav följande budskap till Jerusalem.
13 Herren, Israels Gud, säger:Jag ingick ett förbund med era förfäder för länge sedan, när jag ledde dem ut ur deras slaveri i Egypten.
14 Jag bestämde att judiska slavar skulle friges efter sex års tjänst. Men det blev inte så.
15 Nu har ni nyligen kommit på bättre tankar och börjat handla efter min vilja. I mitt tempel lovade ni högtidligt att frige era judiska bröder.
16 Men nu vägrar ni och vanärar mitt namn genom att bryta ert löfte och förslava dem igen.
17 Därför att ni inte vill lyssna till mig och frige dem, ska jag släppa er fria att dö genom krig, hungersnöd och epidemier, säger Herren. Jag ska sprida er som flyktingar över hela världen.
18-19 När ni nu har brutit mot dessa befallningar i mitt förbund, ska jag hugga itu er, precis som ni hugger itu en kalv och går mellan dess båda halvor för att bekräfta ett löfte. Ja, jag ska slakta er, vare sig ni är furstar, hovmän, präster eller vanligt folk, för ni har brutit ert löfte.
20 Jag ska utlämna er åt era fiender, och de ska döda er. Jag ska mata gamar och vilda djur med era döda kroppar.
21 Och jag ska överlämna Sidkia, kungen i Juda, och hans ämbetsmän till den babyloniske kungens armé, även om den tillfälligt har lämnat staden.
22 Jag ska kalla tillbaka de babyloniska trupperna, och de ska belägra staden, inta och bränna den. Jag ska se till att Juda städer blir fullständigt fördärvade och lämnade öde, utan en enda levande varelse.

Profecía contra Sedequías
34 Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor, cuando Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y todo su ejército y todos los reinos de la tierra que estaban bajo su dominio y todos los pueblos(A) peleaban contra Jerusalén y contra todas sus ciudades(B), diciendo: 2 Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: «Ve y habla a Sedequías, rey de Judá, y dile: “Así dice el Señor(C): ‘He aquí, yo entrego esta ciudad en manos del rey de Babilonia, y él le prenderá fuego(D). 3 +’Y tú no escaparás de su mano, sino que ciertamente serás capturado y entregado en su mano; tus ojos verán los ojos del rey de Babilonia, y él te hablará cara a cara[a](E), y a Babilonia irás(F)’”». 4 Sin embargo, oye la palabra del Señor, oh Sedequías, rey de Judá. Así dice el Señor acerca de ti: «No morirás a espada; 5 en paz morirás. Como quemaron especias por tus padres, los reyes anteriores que te precedieron, así quemarán especias por ti(G), y con “¡Ay, señor!” harán lamento por ti»: Porque yo he hablado la palabra —declara el Señor(H).
6 Entonces habló el profeta Jeremías a Sedequías, rey de Judá, todas estas palabras(I) en Jerusalén 7 mientras el ejército del rey de Babilonia peleaba contra Jerusalén y contra todas las ciudades que quedaban en Judá, es decir, Laquis(J) y Azeca(K), pues solo estas quedaban como ciudades fortificadas entre las ciudades de Judá(L).
8 Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor, después que el rey Sedequías había hecho un pacto con todo el pueblo(M) que había en Jerusalén para proclamarles libertad(N): 9 que cada uno debía poner en libertad a su siervo y a su sierva hebreos(O), para que nadie retuviera a un judío, hermano suyo, en servidumbre(P). 10 Y obedecieron todos los oficiales y todo el pueblo(Q) que habían entrado en el pacto, de que cada uno dejara en libertad a su siervo y cada uno a su sierva, de modo que nadie los mantuviera más en servidumbre; obedecieron y los pusieron en libertad. 11 Pero después se arrepintieron y volvieron a tomar a los siervos y a las siervas a quienes habían dejado en libertad, y los redujeron a servidumbre como siervos y como siervas.
12 Entonces vino la palabra del Señor a Jeremías[b], diciendo: 13 Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: «Yo hice un pacto con vuestros padres el día que los saqué de la tierra de Egipto, de la casa de servidumbre[c](R), diciendo: 14 “Al cabo de siete años cada uno de vosotros pondrá en libertad al hermano hebreo que le[d] fue vendido[e] y que le[f] ha servido por seis años, y lo enviará libre de junto a sí[g](S); pero vuestros padres no me escucharon(T), ni inclinaron su oído. 15 Aunque recientemente os habíais arrepentido y habíais hecho lo que es recto ante mis ojos, cada uno proclamando libertad(U) a su prójimo, habiendo hecho un pacto delante de mí(V) en la casa que es llamada por mi nombre(W), 16 ahora[h] os habéis vuelto atrás y profanado mi nombre(X), y cada uno ha tomado de nuevo[i] a su siervo y cada uno a su sierva, a quienes habíais dejado libres según su deseo, y los habéis reducido a servidumbre como siervos y como siervas(Y)”».
17 Por tanto, así dice el Señor: «Vosotros no me habéis obedecido(Z) proclamando libertad cada uno a su hermano y cada uno a su prójimo. He aquí, proclamo contra vosotros libertad» —declara el Señor— «a la espada, a la pestilencia y al hambre(AA); y haré de vosotros motivo de espanto para todos los reinos de la tierra(AB). 18 Y entregaré a los hombres que han transgredido mi pacto, que no han cumplido las palabras del pacto que hicieron delante de mí(AC), cuando cortaron en dos(AD) el becerro y pasaron entre los pedazos, 19 a los oficiales de Judá, a los oficiales de Jerusalén, a los oficiales de la corte, a los sacerdotes y a todo el pueblo de la tierra(AE) que pasaron entre los pedazos del becerro; 20 y los entregaré en manos de sus enemigos y en manos de los que buscan su vida(AF). Sus cadáveres servirán de comida para las aves del cielo y para las bestias de la tierra(AG). 21 Y a Sedequías, rey de Judá, y a sus oficiales los entregaré en manos de sus enemigos, en manos de los que buscan su vida y en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia(AH), que se ha retirado de vosotros(AI). 22 He aquí, daré órdenes» —declara el Señor— «y los haré volver a esta ciudad, y pelearán contra ella, la tomarán y le prenderán fuego(AJ); y haré de las ciudades de Judá una desolación sin habitantes(AK)».

Warning to Zedekiah
34 While Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms and peoples(A) in the empire he ruled were fighting against Jerusalem(B) and all its surrounding towns, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Go to Zedekiah(C) king of Judah and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.(D) 3 You will not escape from his grasp but will surely be captured and given into his hands.(E) You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will speak with you face to face. And you will go to Babylon.
4 “‘Yet hear the Lord’s promise to you, Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the Lord says concerning you: You will not die by the sword;(F) 5 you will die peacefully. As people made a funeral fire(G) in honor of your predecessors, the kings who ruled before you, so they will make a fire in your honor and lament, “Alas,(H) master!” I myself make this promise, declares the Lord.’”
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet told all this to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem, 7 while the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah that were still holding out—Lachish(I) and Azekah.(J) These were the only fortified cities left in Judah.
Freedom for Slaves
8 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people(K) in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom(L) for the slaves. 9 Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and female; no one was to hold a fellow Hebrew in bondage.(M) 10 So all the officials and people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their male and female slaves and no longer hold them in bondage. They agreed, and set them free. 11 But afterward they changed their minds(N) and took back the slaves they had freed and enslaved them again.
12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors(O) when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.(P) I said, 14 ‘Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you six years, you must let them go free.’[a](Q) Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention(R) to me. 15 Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people.(S) You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name.(T) 16 But now you have turned around(U) and profaned(V) my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.
17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim ‘freedom’ for you,(W) declares the Lord—‘freedom’ to fall by the sword, plague(X) and famine.(Y) I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.(Z) 18 Those who have violated my covenant(AA) and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and then walked between its pieces.(AB) 19 The leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials,(AC) the priests and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf, 20 I will deliver(AD) into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them.(AE) Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.(AF)
21 “I will deliver Zedekiah(AG) king of Judah and his officials(AH) into the hands of their enemies(AI) who want to kill them, to the army of the king of Babylon,(AJ) which has withdrawn(AK) from you. 22 I am going to give the order, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take(AL) it and burn(AM) it down. And I will lay waste(AN) the towns of Judah so no one can live there.”

3 And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.
4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the Lord of thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword:
5 But thou shalt die in peace: and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, so shall they burn odours for thee; and they will lament thee, saying, Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word, saith the Lord.
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,
7 When the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.
8 This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;
9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother.
10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.
11 But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.
12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
13 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying,
14 At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.
15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name:
16 But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom he had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
19 The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf;
20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.
22 Behold, I will command, saith the Lord, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.
