Budskap till Sidkia

34 Detta ord kom till Jeremia från Herren, när Nebukadnessar, kungen av Babylonien, anföll Jerusalem och dess lydstäder med hela sin armé och med alla jordens riken som han härskade över och med alla folk:

2 Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: ”Gå och säg till Sidkia, kungen av Juda: ’Så säger Herren: Jag ska överlämna den här staden till kungen av Babylonien, och han ska bränna ner den. 3 Du ska inte kunna komma undan hans grepp. Du ska tas till fånga och överlämnas åt honom. Du ska ställas öga mot öga med den babyloniske kungen, och han ska tala med dig ansikte mot ansikte. Du ska föras bort till Babylon.

4 Men hör Herrens ord, Sidkia, kung av Juda! Så säger Herren om dig: Du ska inte bli dödad av svärd. 5 Du ska få dö i frid. De ska tända eldar till din ära, så som de tände eldar till dina förfäders ära, till kungar som var före dig. De ska hålla dödsklagan över dig: ”Ve, herre!” Detta har jag talat, säger Herren.’ ”

6 Profeten Jeremia sa allt detta till Sidkia, Juda kung, i Jerusalem. 7 Då höll den babyloniske kungens armé på med att belägra Jerusalem och de städer i Juda som fanns kvar, Lakish och Aseka, som var de enda befästa städer som stod kvar i Juda.

Brott mot slavar

8 Detta är det ord som kom till Jeremia från Herren, sedan Sidkia, kungen av Juda, hade ingått ett förbund med allt folket i Jerusalem om en kungörelse för frigivning av slavarna. 9 Var och en skulle frige sina hebreiska slavar, både kvinnor och män, så att ingen skulle hålla sin judiske landsman som slav. 10 Alla furstarna och allt folket lydde, de som hade gått med i förbundet med villkoren att var och en skulle frige sina slavar och slavinnor och att ingen längre skulle hållas kvar i slaveri. De lydde alltså och släppte dem fria. 11 Men efteråt ändrade de sig och tog tillbaka de slavar och slavinnor som de hade frigett och gjorde dem till slavar igen.

12 Då kom Herrens ord till Jeremia: 13 ”Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: Jag ingick ett förbund med era förfäder, när jag ledde dem ut ur Egypten, ut ur slaveriet. Jag sa: 14 ’Vart sjunde år ska ni var och en frige de hebreiska landsmän som har sålt sig till er och tjänat er i sex år. Då ska du låta honom gå fri från dig.’ Men era förfäder lyssnade inte på mig och lydde mig inte. 15 Nu har ni nyligen ändrat er och gjort det som är rätt inför mig, när ni kungjorde frigivning av era landsmän och slöt ett avtal inför mig i det hus som är uppkallat efter mitt namn. 16 Men nu har ni ändrat er igen och vanhelgat mitt namn. Alla har ni tagit tillbaka de slavar och slavinnor som ni frigivit efter deras önskan, och nu har ni gjort dem till era slavar igen.

17 Därför säger Herren så: ’Ni har inte lytt mig. Ni har inte släppt era bröder och landsmän. Därför ska jag släppa lös svärd, pest och hungersnöd över er, säger Herren. Jag ska göra er till en förskräckelse för alla riken på jorden. 18 Jag ska överlämna de män som brutit mot mitt förbund och inte fullföljt vad som sagts i förbundet som de slöt inför mig, till att behandlas som kalven som de delade mitt itu och gick mellan dess halvor. 19 Furstarna i Juda och Jerusalem, hovmännen, prästerna och allt folket i landet, som gick mellan kalvens delar, 20 dem ska jag utlämna åt deras fiender som är ute efter deras liv. Deras kroppar ska bli till mat åt himlens fåglar och markens djur. 21 Och jag ska överlämna Sidkia, kungen av Juda, och hans furstar åt deras fiender, dem som är ute efter deras liv, åt den babyloniske kungens armé, som nu har dragit bort härifrån. 22 Jag ska befalla dem, säger Herren, att vända tillbaka till denna stad. De ska anfalla staden, inta och bränna ner den, och städerna i Juda ska jag ödelägga så att ingen kan bo där.’ ”

34 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion, and all the people, fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities thereof, saying,

2 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire:

3 And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.

4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the Lord of thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword:

5 But thou shalt die in peace: and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, so shall they burn odours for thee; and they will lament thee, saying, Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word, saith the Lord.

6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,

7 When the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.

8 This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;

9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother.

10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.

11 But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.

12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

13 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying,

14 At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.

15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name:

16 But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom he had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.

17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,

19 The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf;

20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.

21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.

22 Behold, I will command, saith the Lord, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.

34 Пока Навуходоносор, царь Вавилона, все его войско, и все царства, и народы империи, которой он правил, вели войну с Иерусалимом и всеми окрестными городами[a], было к Иеремии слово Господне:

2 – Так говорит Господь, Бог Израиля: Пойди к Цедекии, царю Иудеи, и скажи ему: «Так говорит Господь: Я отдаю этот город в руки царя Вавилона, и он сожжет его. 3 Ты не спасешься от его руки, но непременно будешь схвачен и отдан ему. Ты увидишь царя Вавилона собственными глазами, и он будет разговаривать с тобой лицом к лицу. И ты пойдешь в Вавилон.

4 Но слушай Господне обещание, Цедекия, царь Иудеи. Так говорит Господь о тебе: Ты не погибнешь от меча, 5 ты умрешь в мире. И как устраивали поминальный костер в честь твоих предков, прежних царей, которые были до тебя, так разведут костер[b] и в твою честь и будут оплакивать: „Увы, господин!“ Я Сам обещаю это, – возвещает Господь».

6 И пророк Иеремия пересказал все это царю Иудеи Цедекии в Иерусалиме, 7 когда войско царя Вавилона воевало с Иерусалимом и другими городами Иудеи, которые еще держались, – с Лахишем и Азекой. Это были последние укрепленные города, которые оставались у Иудеи.

Нарушение закона о рабах

Я сказал: 14 «Каждый седьмой год всякий из вас должен освобождать своего соплеменника-еврея, который продал тебе себя. Когда он прослужит шесть лет, ты должен отпустить его»[c]. Но ваши отцы не слушали Меня и не обращали внимания. 15 Недавно вы покаялись и сделали то, что правильно в Моих глазах: каждый из вас объявил свободу своим соплеменникам. Вы даже заключили соглашение предо Мной в доме, который носит Мое имя. 16 Но сейчас вы повернули назад и осквернили Мое имя; каждый из вас вернул тех рабов и рабынь, которых отпустил на свободу, чтобы они шли, куда пожелают. Вы заставили их снова стать вашими рабами.

17 Поэтому так говорит Господь: Вы не послушались Меня и не объявили свободу своим соплеменникам. За это Я объявляю вам ныне свободу, – возвещает Господь, – погибнуть от меча, от мора или от голода. Я сделаю вас ужасом для всех земных царств. 18 С теми, кто нарушил Мой завет и не выполнил условий завета, который они заключили предо Мной, Я поступлю так же, как с молодым быком, которого они рассекли надвое и между частями которого прошли[d]. 19 Вождей Иудеи и Иерусалима, придворных сановников, священников и народ страны, прошедших между частями быка, 20 Я отдам их врагам, которые ищут их смерти. Их трупы станут пищей небесным птицам и земному зверью.

21 Я отдам Цедекию, царя Иудеи, и его приближенных их врагам, которые ищут их смерти, войску вавилонского царя, которое отступило от вас. 22 Я уже отдаю повеление, – возвещает Господь, – которое вернет их к этому городу. Они сразятся с ним, захватят его и сожгут. Я сделаю города Иудеи необитаемой пустыней.

34 This is the message that came to Jeremiah from the Lord when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and all his armies from all the kingdoms he ruled, came and fought against Jerusalem and the cities of Judah:

2 Go tell Zedekiah, king of Judah, that the Lord says this: I will give this city to the king of Babylon and he shall burn it. 3 You shall not escape; you shall be captured and taken before the king of Babylon; he shall pronounce sentence against you and you shall be exiled to Babylon. 4 But listen to this, O Zedekiah, king of Judah: God says you won’t be killed in war and carnage 5 but that you will die quietly among your people, and they will burn incense in your memory, just as they did for your fathers. They will weep for you and say, “Alas, our king is dead!” This I have decreed, says the Lord.

6 So Jeremiah delivered the message to King Zedekiah. 7 At this time the Babylonian army was besieging Jerusalem, Lachish, and Azekah—the only walled cities of Judah still standing.

8 This is the message that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah of Judah had freed all the slaves in Jerusalem— 9 (for King Zedekiah had ordered everyone to free his Hebrew slaves, both men and women. He had said that no Jew should be the master of another Jew for all were brothers. 10 The princes and all the people had obeyed the king’s command and freed their slaves, but the action was only temporary. 11 They changed their minds and made their servants slaves again.[a] 12 That is why the Lord gave the following message to Jerusalem.)

13 The Lord, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your fathers long ago when I brought them from their slavery in Egypt. 14 I told them that every Hebrew slave must be freed after serving six years. But this was not done. 15 Recently you began doing what was right, as I commanded you, and freed your slaves. You had solemnly promised me in my Temple that you would do it. 16 But now you refuse and have defiled my name by shrugging off your oath and have made them slaves again.

17 Therefore, says the Lord, because you will not listen to me and release them, I will release you to the power of death by war and famine and disease. And I will scatter you over all the world as exiles. 18-19 Because you have refused the terms of our contract, I will cut you apart just as you cut apart the calf when you walked between its halves to solemnize your vows. Yes, I will butcher you, whether you are princes, court officials, priests, or people—for you have broken your oath. 20 I will give you to your enemies, and they shall kill you. I will feed your dead bodies to the vultures and wild animals. 21 And I will surrender Zedekiah, king of Judah, and his officials to the army of the king of Babylon, though he has departed from the city for a little while. 22 I will summon the Babylonian armies back again, and they will fight against it and capture this city and burn it. And I will see to it that the cities of Judah are completely destroyed and left desolate without a living soul.

Warning to Zedekiah

34 While Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms and peoples(A) in the empire he ruled were fighting against Jerusalem(B) and all its surrounding towns, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Go to Zedekiah(C) king of Judah and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.(D) 3 You will not escape from his grasp but will surely be captured and given into his hands.(E) You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will speak with you face to face. And you will go to Babylon.

4 “‘Yet hear the Lord’s promise to you, Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the Lord says concerning you: You will not die by the sword;(F) 5 you will die peacefully. As people made a funeral fire(G) in honor of your predecessors, the kings who ruled before you, so they will make a fire in your honor and lament, “Alas,(H) master!” I myself make this promise, declares the Lord.’”

6 Then Jeremiah the prophet told all this to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem, 7 while the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah that were still holding out—Lachish(I) and Azekah.(J) These were the only fortified cities left in Judah.

Freedom for Slaves

8 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people(K) in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom(L) for the slaves. 9 Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and female; no one was to hold a fellow Hebrew in bondage.(M) 10 So all the officials and people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their male and female slaves and no longer hold them in bondage. They agreed, and set them free. 11 But afterward they changed their minds(N) and took back the slaves they had freed and enslaved them again.

12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors(O) when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.(P) I said, 14 ‘Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you six years, you must let them go free.’[a](Q) Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention(R) to me. 15 Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people.(S) You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name.(T) 16 But now you have turned around(U) and profaned(V) my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.

17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim ‘freedom’ for you,(W) declares the Lord—‘freedom’ to fall by the sword, plague(X) and famine.(Y) I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.(Z) 18 Those who have violated my covenant(AA) and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and then walked between its pieces.(AB) 19 The leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials,(AC) the priests and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf, 20 I will deliver(AD) into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them.(AE) Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.(AF)

21 “I will deliver Zedekiah(AG) king of Judah and his officials(AH) into the hands of their enemies(AI) who want to kill them, to the army of the king of Babylon,(AJ) which has withdrawn(AK) from you. 22 I am going to give the order, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take(AL) it and burn(AM) it down. And I will lay waste(AN) the towns of Judah so no one can live there.”
