Herren lovar fred och välstånd
33 Herrens ord kom till Jeremia en andra gång, medan han fortfarande satt inspärrad på vaktgården: 2 ”Så säger Herren, han som skapade jorden[a], Herren, som formade och fastställde den – Herren är hans namn: 3 ’Ropa till mig, så ska jag svara dig och berätta för dig stora och ofattbara ting som du inte känner till.’ 4 För så säger Herren, Israels Gud, om husen i denna stad och om judakungarnas palats som rivits ner för belägringsvallarnas och svärdets skull,[b] 5 om dem som har kommit hit för att strida mot kaldéerna: ’De ska fyllas med döda kroppar av de människor som jag dödat i min vrede och förbittring. Jag har dolt mitt ansikte för denna stad för all deras ondskas skull.
6 Se, jag ska ge läkedom och helande, jag ska bota dem och låta dem njuta av fred och trygghet i överflöd. 7 Jag ska föra Juda och Israel tillbaka från deras exil och bygga upp dem så att de blir som förut. 8 Jag ska rena dem från all den synd de begått mot mig och förlåta dem alla synder de begått mot mig och genom vilka de gjort uppror mot mig. 9 Då kommer staden att bli till heder för mig, till glädje, pris och ära inför alla jordens folk, när de får höra allt det goda jag gör för dem. De kommer att förskräckas och darra för allt det goda jag gör och för den välgång jag ger den.’ ”
10 Så säger Herren: ”Än en gång ska man på denna plats, som ni säger vara ödelagd, utan människor och djur, i städerna i Juda och på Jerusalems gator, som är tomma, utan människor och djur, höras 11 glada röster, jubelrop och bröllopsglädje, rop från dem som bär fram tackoffer i Herrens hus och säger:
’Prisa härskarornas Herre,
för Herren är god,
och hans nåd består för evigt.’
Jag ska återställa landets lycka som det en gång var, säger Herren.
12 Så säger härskarornas Herre: ’På denna plats, som nu är öde, utan människor och djur, och i alla dess städer ska än en gång finnas betesmarker där herdar kan låta sina hjordar vila. 13 I bergsbygdens, i Låglandets och i Negevs städer, i Benjamins land, i trakten runt Jerusalem och i Judas städer ska hjordar åter ströva omkring och herdar räkna in sina får,’ säger Herren.
Löftet om det rättfärdiga skottet från Davids ätt
14 Det ska komma en tid, säger Herren, då jag ska uppfylla det goda som jag lovat folket i Israel och Juda.
15 På den tiden och den dagen
ska jag låta ett rättfärdigt skott växa upp åt David.
Han ska göra det som är rätt och rättfärdigt i landet.
16 På den tiden ska Juda räddas
och Jerusalem leva i trygghet.
Då ska stadens namn vara
’Herren vår rättfärdighet.’ ”
17 För så säger Herren: ”Aldrig ska det saknas en ättling till David på Israels tron. 18 Det ska heller aldrig saknas levitiska präster som inför mig dagligen offrar brännoffer och bränner matoffer och bär fram slaktoffer.”
19 Herrens ord kom till Jeremia: 20 ”Så säger Herren: ’Inte förrän ni kan bryta mitt förbund med dagen och natten, så att dag och natt inte längre kommer i sin vanliga ordning, 21 kan mitt förbund med min tjänare David brytas, så att han inte längre har någon av sina ättlingar som regerar på hans tron, och likadant med de levitiska prästerna, mina tjänare. 22 Lika oräkneliga som stjärnorna på himlen och som sanden i havet som inte kan mätas ska jag låta min tjänare Davids ättlingar bli, och likaså leviterna som tjänstgör inför mig.’ ”
23 Herrens ord kom till Jeremia: 24 ”Har du inte märkt vad detta folk säger: ’De båda släkter som Herren utvalde har han förkastat’. De föraktar mitt folk och betraktar det inte längre som en nation. 25 Så säger Herren: ’Om jag inte har ingått ett förbund med dag och natt och fastställt en ordning för himmel och jord, 26 då kan jag förkasta ättlingarna till Jakob och David, min tjänare, så att jag inte utser någon av hans ättlingar till att regera över Abrahams, Isaks och Jakobs efterkommande. Jag ska återupprätta deras lycka och förbarma mig över dem.’ ”

33 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
2 Thus saith the Lord the maker thereof, the Lord that formed it, to establish it; the Lord is his name;
3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
4 For thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword;
5 They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city.
6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.
7 And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.
8 And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.
9 And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.
10 Thus saith the Lord; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye say shall be desolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast,
11 The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the Lord of hosts: for the Lord is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, saith the Lord.
12 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Again in this place, which is desolate without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, shall be an habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down.
13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass again under the hands of him that telleth them, saith the Lord.
14 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.
15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness.
17 For thus saith the Lord; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;
18 Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
19 And the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, saying,
20 Thus saith the Lord; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
21 Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.
22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.
23 Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying,
24 Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the Lord hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.
25 Thus saith the Lord; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
26 Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

33 While Jeremiah was still in jail, the Lord sent him this second message:
2 The Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth—Jehovah is his name—says this: 3 Ask me and I will tell you some remarkable secrets about what is going to happen here. 4 For though you have torn down the houses of this city, and the king’s palace too, for materials to strengthen the walls against the siege weapons of the enemy, 5 yet the Babylonians will enter, and the men of this city are already as good as dead, for I have determined to destroy them in my furious anger. I have abandoned them because of all their wickedness, and I will not pity them when they cry for help.
6 Nevertheless the time will come when I will heal Jerusalem’s damage and give her prosperity and peace. 7 I will rebuild the cities of both Judah and Israel and restore their fortunes. 8 And I will cleanse away all their sins against me and pardon them. 9 Then this city will be an honor to me, and it will give me joy and be a source of praise and glory to me before all the nations of the earth! The people of the world will see the good I do for my people and will tremble with awe!
10-11 The Lord declares that the happy voices of bridegrooms and of brides and the joyous song of those bringing thanksgiving offerings to the Lord will be heard again in this doomed land. The people will sing: “Praise the Lord! For he is good and his mercy endures forever!” For I will make this land happier and more prosperous than it has ever been before. 12 This land—though every man and animal and city is doomed—will once more see shepherds leading sheep and lambs. 13 Once again their flocks will prosper in the mountain villages and in the cities east of the Philistine Plain, in all the cities of the Negeb, in the land of Benjamin, in the vicinity of Jerusalem, and in all the cities of Judah. 14 Yes, the day will come, says the Lord, when I will do for Israel and Judah all the good I promised them.
15 At that time I will bring to the throne the true Son of David,[a] and he shall rule justly. 16 In that day the people of Judah and Jerusalem shall live in safety and their motto will be, “The Lord is our righteousness!” 17 For the Lord declares that from then on, David shall forever have an heir sitting on the throne of Israel. 18 And there shall always be Levites to offer burnt offerings and meal offerings and sacrifices to the Lord.
19 Then this message came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 20-21 If you can break my covenant with the day and with the night so that day and night don’t come on their usual schedule, only then will my covenant with David, my servant, be broken so that he shall not have a son to reign upon his throne; and my covenant with the Levite priests, my ministers, is noncancelable. 22 And as the stars cannot be counted nor the sand upon the seashores measured, so the descendants of David my servant and the line of the Levites who minister to me will be multiplied.
23 The Lord spoke to Jeremiah again and said: 24 Have you heard what people are saying?—that the Lord chose Judah and Israel and then abandoned them! They are sneering and saying that Israel isn’t worthy to be counted as a nation. 25-26 But this is the Lord’s reply: I would no more reject my people than I would change my laws of night and day, of earth and sky. I will never abandon the Jews, or David my servant, or change the plan that his child will someday rule these descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Instead I will restore their prosperity and have mercy on them.
