Köp av åker under belägring
32 (A) Detta ord kom från Herren till Jeremia i Juda kung Sidkias tionde regeringsår[a], som var Nebukadressars artonde regeringsår. 2 (B) Vid den tiden belägrade den babyloniske kungens här Jerusalem, och profeten Jeremia var instängd på vaktgården[b] i Juda kungs hus. 3 (C) Juda kung Sidkia hade låtit spärra in honom där och sagt: ”Hur vågar du profetera och säga: Så säger Herren: Se, jag ska ge denna stad i den babyloniske kungens hand och han ska inta den. 4 (D) Och Juda kung Sidkia ska inte komma undan kaldeerna, utan han ska överlämnas i den babyloniske kungens våld och tvingas tala med honom ansikte mot ansikte och se honom öga mot öga. 5 Han ska föra Sidkia till Babel, och där ska han stanna tills jag tar mig an honom, säger Herren. Och när ni strider mot kaldeerna ska ni inte ha någon framgång.”
6 Jeremia sade: ”Herrens ord kom till mig. Han sade: 7 (E) Se, Hanamel, din farbror Shallums son, ska komma till dig och säga: Köp min åker i Anatot, för du har inlösningsrätt[c] att köpa den.”
8 Och min farbrors son Hanamel kom till mig på vaktgården, som Herren hade sagt, och sade till mig: ”Köp min åker i Anatot i Benjamins land, för du har arvsrätt och inlösningsrätt till den. Köp den därför åt dig.” Då förstod jag att det var Herrens ord, 9 och jag köpte åkern i Anatot av min farbrors son Hanamel och vägde upp pengarna åt honom, sjutton siklar silver[d]. 10 Jag skrev ett köpebrev och satte sigill på det, tillkallade vittnen och vägde upp pengarna på en våg. 11 Och jag tog köpebrevet, både det förseglade brevet med avtalet och villkoren samt det öppna brevet. 12 Jag gav köpebrevet till Baruk, son till Neria[e], son till Mahaseja, i närvaro av min släkting Hanamel och vittnena som hade skrivit under köpebrevet och alla andra judar som fanns på vaktgården. 13 Och jag befallde Baruk i deras närvaro och sade: 14 ”Så säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud: Ta dessa brev, både det förseglade köpebrevet och det öppna brevet, och lägg dem i ett lerkärl så att de bevaras under lång tid. 15 För så säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud: Än en gång ska man köpa hus och åkrar och vingårdar i detta land.”
Profetens bön
16 När jag hade gett köpebrevet till Baruk, Nerias son, bad jag till Herren och sade: 17 (F) ”O, Herre Gud, se, du har gjort himmel och jord med din stora kraft och din uträckta arm. För dig är ingenting omöjligt. 18 (G) Du visar nåd mot tusenden och bestraffar fädernas missgärning på deras barn efter dem, du store och väldige Gud: Herren Sebaot är hans namn. 19 (H) Du är stor i råd och mäktig i gärningar. Dina ögon vakar över människornas alla vägar för att ge åt var och en efter hans vägar, efter frukten av hans gärningar.
20 (I) Du gjorde tecken och under i Egyptens land och gör så än i dag, både med Israel och med andra människor, och du har gjort dig ett namn som är detsamma än i dag. 21 (J) Du förde ditt folk Israel ut ur Egyptens land med tecken och under, med stark hand och uträckt arm och genom stor skräck. 22 (K) Och du gav dem detta land som du med ed hade lovat deras fäder att ge dem, ett land som flödar av mjölk och honung. 23 De kom och tog det i besittning, men de lyssnade inte till din röst och vandrade inte efter din lag. De gjorde ingenting av allt det du hade befallt dem att göra. Därför lät du all denna olycka drabba dem.
24 (L) Se hur belägringsvallarna[f] närmar sig staden för att inta den, och genom svärd, svält och pest är staden given i de kaldeiska belägrarnas hand. Vad du har talat har nu skett, du ser det själv. 25 Men fastän staden är given i kaldeernas hand säger du, Herre Gud, till mig: Köp dig åkern för pengar och ta vittnen på det!”
Herrens svar
26 Då kom Herrens ord till Jeremia. Han sade: 27 (M) ”Se, jag är Herren, allt kötts Gud. Skulle något vara omöjligt för mig? 28 Därför säger Herren så: Jag ger denna stad i kaldeernas och den babyloniske kungen Nebukadressars hand, och han ska inta den. 29 (N) Kaldeerna som belägrar staden ska komma och tända eld på den och bränna upp den tillsammans med de hus där man har tänt rökelse på taken åt Baal och väckt min vrede genom att utgjuta dryckesoffer åt andra gudar.
30 För ända från sin ungdom har Israels barn och Juda barn bara gjort det som är ont i mina ögon. Israels barn har inte gjort annat än väckt min vrede med sina händers verk, säger Herren. 31 För ända från den dag då denna stad byggdes och till nu har den varit orsak till vrede och harm för mig.
Därför måste jag förkasta den från mitt ansikte 32 (O) för all ondska som Israels barn och Juda barn med sina kungar, furstar, präster och profeter liksom Juda män och Jerusalems invånare har gjort för att väcka min vrede. 33 (P) De vände ryggen till mig och inte ansiktet, och fastän de gång på gång blev undervisade ville de inte höra och ta emot tillrättavisning. 34 (Q) De satte upp sina vidriga avgudar[g] i det hus som är uppkallat efter mitt namn och orenade det. 35 (R) Och baalshöjderna i Hinnoms sons dal byggde de upp för att offra sina söner och döttrar åt Molok, fastän jag aldrig hade befallt dem att göra något så avskyvärt eller ens tänkt mig det. Så lockade de även Juda till synd.
36 Därför säger nu Herren, Israels Gud, om denna stad, som ni säger är given i den babyloniske kungens hand genom svärd, svält och pest: 37 (S) Se, jag ska samla dem ur alla de länder dit jag fördrivit dem i min harm, vrede och stora förbittring, och jag ska föra dem tillbaka till denna plats och låta dem bo här i trygghet. 38 (T) De ska vara mitt folk och jag ska vara deras Gud. 39 (U) Jag ska ge dem alla ett och samma hjärta och lära dem en och samma väg så att de alltid fruktar mig, för att det ska gå väl för dem och deras barn efter dem. 40 (V) Jag ska sluta ett evigt förbund med dem så att jag inte vänder mig ifrån dem och slutar att göra dem gott, och jag ska lägga fruktan för mig i deras hjärtan så att de inte viker av från mig. 41 (W) Jag ska glädja mig över dem och göra dem gott och plantera dem i detta land med trofasthet, av hela mitt hjärta och hela min själ.
42 (X) För så säger Herren: Liksom jag låtit all denna stora olycka komma över detta folk, så ska jag också låta allt det goda som jag lovat dem komma över dem. 43 Man ska köpa åkrar i detta land som ni säger är en ödemark utan människor och djur, given i kaldeernas hand. 44 (Y) Åkrar ska köpas för pengar och man ska skriva och försegla köpebrev och tillkalla vittnen i Benjamins land, i Jerusalems omgivningar och i Juda städer, liksom i Bergsbygdens, Låglandets och Negevs städer. För jag ska göra slut på deras fångenskap, säger Herren.”

Jeremia köper mark
32 Följande budskap kom till Jeremia från Herren under den judiske kungen Sidkias tionde regeringsår, vilket var Nebukadnessars artonde regeringsår.
2 På den tiden var Jeremia fängslad i fängelsehålan under palatset, medan den babyloniska armén belägrade Jerusalem.
3 Kung Sidkia hade satt honom där, eftersom han fortsatte att profetera om att staden skulle bli intagen av Babylons kung
4 och att kung Sidkia skulle bli tillfångatagen och bortförd av honom till Babylon för förhör och dom.
5 Han ska ta dig med sig till Babylon och sätta dig i fängelse där i många år, tills han tar itu med dig. Varför kämpar du emot? Du kommer inte att vinna! Ge i stället upp! sa Jeremia till honom gång på gång.
6-7 Då kom detta budskap från Herren till Jeremia: Din kusin Hanamel, Sallums son, kommer snart för att be dig köpa den egendom han äger i Anatot, för enligt lagen har du möjlighet att köpa den innan den bjuds ut till försäljning.
8 Hanamel kom, som Herren hade sagt att han skulle, och besökte mig i fängelset. Köp min åker i Anatot i Benjamins land, för lagen ger dig förtur att köpa den, sa han. Då blev jag fullkomligt övertygad om att budskapet jag hört kommit från Herren.
9 Jag köpte alltså åkern och betalade Hanamel sjutton siklar silver.
10 Jag undertecknade köpebrevet och förseglade det inför vittnen, vägde upp silvret och betalade.
11 Sedan tog jag det förseglade köpebrevet med avtalet, och även avskriften,
12 och i närvaro av Hanamel, dem som bevittnat handlingen och fängelsevakterna överlämnade jag det till Baruk, som var son till Neria och sonson till Mahaseja.
13 Medan de alla hörde på sa jag till honom:
14 Herren, härskarornas Gud, säger: Ta både det förseglade köpebrevet och avskriften och lägg dem i en lerkruka, så att de kan bevaras länge.
15 För Herren, härskarornas Gud, säger: I framtiden kommer dessa handlingar att bli värdefulla. En dag ska folk på nytt äga mark i detta land och köpa och sälja hus, vingårdar och åkrar.
16 När jag hade lämnat dokumenten till Baruk, bad jag:
17 Herre, Herre! Du har gjort himlarna och jorden genom din väldiga makt. Ingenting är för svårt för dig!
18 Du är god och barmhärtig mot tusenden, och ändå lider barnen för sina förfäders synder. Du är en stor och mäktig Gud, och Herren, härskarornas Gud, är ditt namn.
19 Du har all vishet och gör stora och väldiga under. Du ser hur alla människor lever och du belönar var och en efter hans liv och gärning.
20 Du har gjort häpnadsväckande saker i Egyptens land, sådant som man minns än i dag. Och du har fortsatt att göra stora under i Israel och över hela världen. Du har gjort ditt namn mycket berömt, och det är det än i dag.
21 Du ledde Israel ut ur Egypten med mäktiga under och med stor makt, och alla var förskräckta.
22 Du gav Israel detta land, som du lovat deras förfäder långt tidigare, ett underbart land som flyter av mjölk och honung.
23 Våra förfäder kom och intog det och bodde i det, men de vägrade att lyda dig och följa din lag. De struntade i alla dina befallningar. Det är därför som du sänt allt detta onda över dem.
24 Se hur belägringsvallar har byggts upp mot stadsmurarna och hur babylonierna kommer att besegra staden med svärd, hungersnöd och epidemier. Allting har blivit precis som du sagt, som du bestämt att det skulle bli!
25 Och ändå uppmanar du mig att köpa en åker och betala en ordentlig summa för den i vittnens närvaro, trots att staden kommer att tillhöra våra fiender.
26 Då kom det här budskapet till Jeremia:
27 Jag är Herren, hela mänsklighetens Gud. Skulle något vara för svårt för mig?
28 Jag kommer att överlämna den här staden till babylonierna och till Nebukadnessar, kungen i Babylon. Han ska inta den.
29 Babylonierna som är utanför ska komma in och tända eld på staden och bränna ner alla dessa hus, på vilkas tak man tänt rökelseoffer till Baal och hällt ut drickoffer åt andra gudar. Detta har uppväckt min vrede.
30 Israel och Juda har inte gjort något annat än ont sedan långt tillbaka i tiden. De har gjort mig rasande med alla sina ogudaktiga handlingar.
31 Alltsedan den här staden blev byggd har den inte gjort annat än retat mig, och därför har jag beslutat att utplåna den ur min åsyn.
32 Israels och Judas synder, kungarnas, officerarnas, prästernas, profeternas och folkets synder, gör mig upprörd.
33 De har vänt mig ryggen och vägrar att vända om. Dag efter dag och år efter år har jag försökt lära dem att skilja mellan rätt och orätt, men de har inte velat lyssna eller lyda.
34 De har också orenat mitt eget tempel genom sin avskyvärda avgudadyrkan.
35 De har byggt stora altaren till Baal i Hinnoms sons dal. Där har de bränt sina barn som offer till Molok. Jag har aldrig gett befallning om något sådant eller ens kunnat tänka mig något så fruktansvärt, som det som nu fått Juda att synda så svårt!
36 Ni säger att den här staden ska falla för Babylons kung genom krig, hungersnöd och sjukdom.
37 Men jag, Herren, Israels Gud, ska leda mitt folk tillbaka från alla de länder dit jag i min vrede förskingrat dem. Jag ska leda dem tillbaka till just den här staden och låta dem bo här i fred och trygghet.
38 De ska vara mitt folk och jag ska vara deras Gud.
39 De ska bli ett hjärta och en själ och kommer att tillbe mig, för sitt eget och sina ättlingars bästa.
40 Jag ska upprätta ett evigt förbund med dem och lova att aldrig mer överge dem, utan bara göra dem gott. Jag ska lägga ner en längtan att tillbe mig i deras hjärtan, och de ska aldrig lämna mig.
41 Jag kommer att vara glad för att jag handlar väl mot dem, och jag ska med stor glädje återplantera dem i detta land.
42 På samma sätt som jag sänt all denna förskräckelse och ondska över dem, ska jag göra allt gott som jag lovat dem.
43 Åkrar ska på nytt köpas och säljas i landet, som nu är härjat av babylonierna och som både människor och djur flytt bort från.
44 Ja, åkrarna ska än en gång köpas och säljas. Köpebrev ska undertecknas, förseglas och bevittnas, både i Benjamins land och här i Jerusalem, i Juda städer och i berglandskapet, på filisteernas slätter och även i Negev, för en dag ska jag återupprätta landets välstånd.

Jeremías compra un campo en Anatot
32 Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor en el año décimo de Sedequías, rey de Judá, que fue el año dieciocho de Nabucodonosor(A). 2 En aquel tiempo el ejército del rey de Babilonia tenía sitiada a Jerusalén, y el profeta Jeremías estaba encerrado en el patio de la guardia(B), que estaba en la casa del rey de Judá, 3 porque Sedequías, rey de Judá, lo había encerrado(C), diciendo: ¿Por qué profetizas, diciendo: «Así dice el Señor(D): “He aquí, voy a entregar esta ciudad en manos del rey de Babilonia(E), y él la tomará(F); 4 y Sedequías, rey de Judá, no escapará de la mano de los caldeos, sino que ciertamente será entregado en manos del rey de Babilonia(G) que hablará con él cara a cara[a], y sus ojos verán sus ojos; 5 y él llevará a Sedequías a Babilonia, y allí estará hasta que yo lo visite” —declara el Señor— “si peleáis contra los caldeos(H), no tendréis éxito(I)”»?
6 Y Jeremías dijo: Vino a mí la palabra del Señor, diciendo: 7 «He aquí, Hanameel, hijo de tu tío Salum, viene a ti, diciendo: “Cómprate el campo que tengo en Anatot(J), porque tú tienes el derecho de rescate para comprarlo(K)”». 8 Y vino a mí Hanameel, hijo de mi tío, al patio de la guardia conforme a la palabra del Señor, y me dijo(L): «Te ruego que compres el campo que tengo en Anatot, que está en la tierra de Benjamín, porque tú tienes el derecho de posesión(M) y el rescate es tuyo; cómpralo para ti». Entonces supe que esta era la palabra del Señor(N). 9 Y compré a Hanameel, hijo de mi tío, el campo que estaba en Anatot, y le pesé la plata, diecisiete siclos[b] de plata(O). 10 Firmé la escritura(P) y la[c] sellé(Q), llamé testigos(R) y pesé la plata en la balanza. 11 Luego tomé la escritura(S) de compra, la copia sellada con los términos y condiciones, y también la copia abierta; 12 y di la escritura de compra a Baruc, hijo de Nerías(T), hijo de Maasías(U), en presencia de Hanameel, hijo de mi tío, en presencia de los testigos que firmaron la escritura de compra y en presencia de todos los judíos que se encontraban en el patio de la guardia. 13 Y di orden a Baruc en presencia de ellos, diciendo: 14 «Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “Toma estas escrituras, esta escritura de compra sellada y esta escritura abierta, y ponlas en una vasija de barro para que duren mucho tiempo[d]”. 15 Porque así dice el Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “De nuevo se comprarán casas, campos y viñas en esta tierra(V)”».
16 Entonces oré al Señor, después de haber dado la escritura de compra a Baruc, hijo de Nerías, diciendo(W): 17 «¡Ah, Señor Dios[e]! He aquí(X), tú hiciste los cielos y la tierra con tu gran poder y con tu brazo extendido(Y); nada es imposible para ti(Z), 18 que muestras misericordia a millares, pero que castigas la iniquidad de los padres en[f] sus hijos después de ellos(AA), oh grande(AB) y poderoso Dios(AC), el Señor de los ejércitos es su nombre(AD); 19 grande en consejo y poderoso en obras(AE), cuyos ojos están abiertos sobre todos los caminos de los hijos de los hombres(AF), para dar a cada uno conforme a sus caminos y conforme al fruto de sus obras(AG). 20 Tú realizaste[g] señales y portentos en la tierra de Egipto(AH) hasta este día, y en Israel y entre los hombres, y te has hecho un nombre, como se ve hoy(AI). 21 Y sacaste a tu pueblo Israel de la tierra de Egipto con señales y portentos, con mano fuerte y con brazo extendido y con gran terror(AJ), 22 y les diste esta tierra, que habías jurado dar a sus padres, tierra que mana leche y miel(AK). 23 Y ellos entraron y tomaron posesión de ella(AL), pero no obedecieron tu voz ni anduvieron en tu ley(AM); no hicieron nada de todo lo que les mandaste hacer(AN); por tanto tú has hecho venir sobre ellos toda esta calamidad(AO). 24 He aquí, los terraplenes de asalto han llegado a la ciudad para tomarla(AP), y la ciudad va a ser entregada en manos de los caldeos que pelean contra ella, por causa de la espada, el hambre y la pestilencia(AQ); lo que habías hablado ha venido a ser(AR), y he aquí, tú lo estás viendo. 25 Y tú me has dicho, oh Señor Dios[h]: “Cómprate el campo con dinero, y llama testigos”; aunque la ciudad sea entregada en manos de los caldeos».
26 Entonces vino palabra del Señor a Jeremías, diciendo: 27 He aquí, yo soy el Señor, el Dios de toda carne(AS), ¿habrá algo imposible para mí(AT)? 28 Por tanto, así dice el Señor: He aquí, entregaré esta ciudad en mano de los caldeos y en mano de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y él la tomará(AU). 29 Y entrarán los caldeos que atacan esta ciudad, prenderán fuego a la[i] ciudad y la quemarán(AV), junto con las casas en las que han ofrecido incienso a Baal sobre sus terrazas y han derramado libaciones a otros dioses(AW) para provocarme a ira. 30 Porque los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Judá solo han hecho lo malo ante mis ojos desde su juventud; ciertamente los hijos de Israel no han hecho más que provocarme a ira con la obra de sus manos(AX) —declara el Señor(AY). 31 Porque motivo de mi ira y de mi furor ha sido esta ciudad para mí, desde el día en que la edificaron(AZ) hasta hoy, de modo que será quitada de mi presencia(BA) 32 por todo el mal que los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Judá hicieron para provocarme a ira, ellos, sus reyes, sus jefes, sus sacerdotes, sus profetas, los hombres de Judá y los habitantes de Jerusalén(BB). 33 Ellos me dieron la espalda, y no el rostro; aunque les enseñaba, enseñándoles una y otra vez[j], no escucharon ni aceptaron[k] corrección(BC), 34 sino que pusieron sus abominaciones en la casa que es llamada por mi nombre, profanándola(BD). 35 Y edificaron los lugares altos de Baal que están en el valle de Ben-hinom, para hacer pasar por el fuego a sus hijos y a sus hijas en honor de Moloc(BE), lo cual no les había mandado, ni me pasó por la mente[l] que ellos cometieran esta abominación(BF), para hacer que Judá pecara.
36 Ahora pues, así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel, en cuanto a esta ciudad de la cual vosotros decís: «Va a ser entregada en mano del rey de Babilonia por la espada, por el hambre y por la pestilencia(BG)». 37 He aquí, los reuniré de todas las tierras a las cuales los he echado en mi ira, en mi furor y con gran enojo, y los haré volver a este lugar y los haré morar seguros(BH). 38 Ellos serán mi pueblo, y yo seré su Dios(BI); 39 y les daré un solo corazón(BJ) y un solo camino, para que me teman siempre, para bien de ellos y de sus hijos después de ellos(BK). 40 Haré con ellos un pacto eterno(BL), por el que no me apartaré de ellos(BM), para hacerles bien, e infundiré mi temor en sus corazones para que no se aparten de mí(BN). 41 Me regocijaré en ellos haciéndoles bien(BO), y ciertamente los plantaré en esta tierra(BP), con todo mi corazón y con toda mi alma(BQ). 42 Porque así dice el Señor: «Como he traído a este pueblo toda esta gran calamidad así he de traer sobre ellos todo el bien(BR) que les prometo(BS). 43 Y se comprarán campos en esta tierra de la cual decís vosotros: “Es una desolación, sin hombres ni animales(BT); entregada está en mano de los caldeos(BU)”. 44 La gente comprará campos por dinero, firmarán y sellarán escrituras[m] y llamarán a testigos(BV), en la tierra de Benjamín, en los alrededores de Jerusalén, en las ciudades de Judá, en las ciudades de la región montañosa, en las ciudades de la llanura y en las ciudades del Neguev[n](BW), porque restauraré su bienestar[o]» —declara el Señor(BX).

32 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth(A) year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth(B) year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging(C) Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined(D) in the courtyard of the guard(E) in the royal palace of Judah.
3 Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy(F) as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture(G) it. 4 Zedekiah(H) king of Judah will not escape(I) the Babylonians[a](J) but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes. 5 He will take(K) Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him,(L) declares the Lord. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”(M)
6 Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: 7 Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth,(N) because as nearest relative it is your right and duty(O) to buy it.’
8 “Then, just as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field(P) at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.’
“I knew that this was the word of the Lord; 9 so I bought the field(Q) at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels[b] of silver.(R) 10 I signed and sealed the deed,(S) had it witnessed,(T) and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy— 12 and I gave this deed to Baruch(U) son of Neriah,(V) the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.
13 “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions: 14 ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed(W) and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time. 15 For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’(X)
16 “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch(Y) son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord:
17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord,(Z) you have made the heavens and the earth(AA) by your great power and outstretched arm.(AB) Nothing is too hard(AC) for you. 18 You show love(AD) to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps(AE) of their children(AF) after them. Great and mighty God,(AG) whose name is the Lord Almighty,(AH) 19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds.(AI) Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind;(AJ) you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.(AK) 20 You performed signs and wonders(AL) in Egypt(AM) and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown(AN) that is still yours. 21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand(AO) and an outstretched arm(AP) and with great terror.(AQ) 22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.(AR) 23 They came in and took possession(AS) of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law;(AT) they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster(AU) on them.
24 “See how the siege ramps(AV) are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague,(AW) the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said(AX) has happened,(AY) as you now see. 25 And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, you, Sovereign Lord, say to me, ‘Buy the field(AZ) with silver and have the transaction witnessed.(BA)’”
26 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind.(BB) Is anything too hard for me?(BC) 28 Therefore this is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar(BD) king of Babylon, who will capture it.(BE) 29 The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down,(BF) along with the houses(BG) where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings(BH) to other gods.(BI)
30 “The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth;(BJ) indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but arouse my anger(BK) with what their hands have made,(BL) declares the Lord. 31 From the day it was built until now, this city(BM) has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove(BN) it from my sight. 32 The people of Israel and Judah have provoked(BO) me by all the evil(BP) they have done—they, their kings and officials,(BQ) their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem. 33 They turned their backs(BR) to me and not their faces; though I taught(BS) them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.(BT) 34 They set up their vile images(BU) in the house that bears my Name(BV) and defiled(BW) it. 35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(BX) to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek,(BY) though I never commanded—nor did it enter my mind(BZ)—that they should do such a detestable(CA) thing and so make Judah sin.(CB)
36 “You are saying about this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague(CC) it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon’; but this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 37 I will surely gather(CD) them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger(CE) and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.(CF) 38 They will be my people,(CG) and I will be their God. 39 I will give them singleness(CH) of heart and action, so that they will always fear(CI) me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. 40 I will make an everlasting covenant(CJ) with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire(CK) them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.(CL) 41 I will rejoice(CM) in doing them good(CN) and will assuredly plant(CO) them in this land with all my heart and soul.(CP)
42 “This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great calamity(CQ) on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised(CR) them. 43 Once more fields will be bought(CS) in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate(CT) waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.’ 44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds(CU) will be signed, sealed and witnessed(CV) in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev,(CW) because I will restore(CX) their fortunes,[c] declares the Lord.”

2 For then the king of Babylon's army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah's house.
3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;
4 And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes;
5 And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith the Lord: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper.
6 And Jeremiah said, The word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
7 Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it.
8 So Hanameel mine uncle's son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the Lord, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.
9 And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle's son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.
10 And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.
11 So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open:
12 And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle's son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison.
13 And I charged Baruch before them, saying,
14 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days.
15 For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.
16 Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the Lord, saying,
17 Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:
18 Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the Lord of hosts, is his name,
19 Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:
20 Which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in Israel, and among other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day;
21 And hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror;
22 And hast given them this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey;
23 And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them:
24 Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it.
25 And thou hast said unto me, O Lord God, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
26 Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying,
27 Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?
28 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it:
29 And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger.
30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the Lord.
31 For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,
32 Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
33 And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.
34 But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it.
35 And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.
36 And now therefore thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence;
37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:
38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:
39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:
40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.
41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.
42 For thus saith the Lord; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.
43 And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the Lord.
