De ontrouw van Israël
3 De Here zei tegen mij: ‘Als een man zijn vrouw verstoot en zij gaat bij hem weg en trouwt met een andere man, kan hij dan nog wel bij haar terugkeren? Als zoiets veel zou voorkomen, zou het hele land ontheiligd worden. Maar u leeft als een prostituee en houdt er talloze minnaars op na. Denkt u dan echt dat u ooit weer naar Mij kunt terugkeren?’ zegt de Here. 2 ‘Is er één plaats in dit land waar u zich niet hebt laten misbruiken door overspel? U zit als een prostituee langs de kant van de weg, als een rover in de woestijn. U hebt het land verontreinigd met uw prostitutie en andere goddeloze daden. 3 Daarom bleven de lenteregens uit. Want u bent een prostituee en net zo brutaal. 4,5 En toch zegt u tegen Mij: “Och vader, U bent altijd mijn vriend geweest. U kunt toch niet boos blijven om zoiets onbelangrijks! Dat zult U toch wel vergeten?” Zo praat u, maar ondertussen gaat u gewoon door met zoveel mogelijk kwaad te doen.’
6 De volgende boodschap van de Here kreeg ik tijdens de regering van koning Josia: ‘Hebt u gezien hoe ontrouw Israël is? Als een prostituee die zich bij elke gelegenheid aan mannen geeft, aanbad Israël haar afgoden op elke heuvel en in de schaduw van elke boom. 7 Ik dacht dat zij op een goede dag naar Mij zou terugkeren en weer van Mij zou zijn, maar zij kwam niet terug. En haar trouweloze zuster Juda zag de voortdurende opstandigheid van Israël. 8 Toch schonk zij daar geen aandacht aan, ook al zag zij dat Ik het ontrouwe Israël verstootte. Maar nu heeft ook Juda Mij verlaten en zich aan anderen verkocht. 9 Lichtzinnig, zonder er verder bij na te denken, begon zij stenen en houten afgoden te vereren. Zo werd het land verontreinigd en ontheiligd. 10 Deze trouweloze zuster Juda keerde niet echt naar Mij terug, want haar berouw was maar schijn,’ zegt de Here God.
11 ‘Als het erop aankomt, is het ontrouwe Israël minder schuldig dan het bedrieglijke Juda! 12 Daarom moet u naar het noorden gaan en tegen Israël zeggen: Israël, mijn zondige volk, kom weer terug bij Mij, want Ik ben genadig, Ik zal niet altijd toornig op u blijven. 13 Erken dat u schuldig bent, geef toe dat u opstandig bent geweest tegen de Here, uw God, en overspel pleegde door onder elke boom afgoden te aanbidden, beken dat u weigerde Mij te volgen. 14 O zondige kinderen, kom tot inkeer, want Ik ben uw meester en zal u terugbrengen naar het land Israël, één uit elke stad en twee uit elk geslacht, waar u ook bent. 15 Ik zal u leiders naar mijn hart geven, die u zullen leiden met kennis en verstand. 16 Dan, als uw land opnieuw be volktis,’ zegt de Here, ‘zult u niet langer verlangen naar die goede oude tijd, toen u de ark van Gods verbond in uw midden had. Niemand zal die tijd missen of eraan terugdenken en er zal ook geen nieuwe ark worden gemaakt, 17 want de Here zal Zelf bij u zijn en de hele stad Jeruzalem zal bekendstaan als de Troon van de Here en alle volken zullen daar samenkomen om de naam van de Here te loven. Zij zullen niet langer hun eigen zondige verlangens volgen. 18 In die tijd zullen de volken Israël en Juda gezamenlijk terugkeren uit de ballingschap naar het land dat Ik hun voorouders als een eeuwige erfenis heb gegeven. 19 En Ik bedacht hoe heerlijk het zou zijn als Ik u als mijn eigen kinderen kon verzorgen. Ik was van plan u dit prachtige land, het mooiste ter wereld, te geven. Ik verlangde ernaar dat u Mij vader zou noemen en Ik dacht dat u zich nooit meer van Mij zou afkeren. 20 Maar u hebt Mij bedrogen, Israël, u hebt zich gedragen als een ontrouwe vrouw die haar man in de steek heeft gelaten.
21 Vanaf de kale heuvels hoor Ik stemmen die huilend smeken. Het is het volk Israël dat de Here de rug heeft toegekeerd en ver van Hem is afgedwaald. 22 O mijn opstandige kinderen, kom weer bij Mij terug, dan zal Ik u genezen van uw zonden. En zij zullen antwoorden: “Ja, wij komen terug, want U bent de Here, onze God. 23 Wij zijn het aanbidden van afgoden op de heuvels en het houden van feesten in de bergen zat. Het is allemaal erg tegengevallen. Alleen in de Here, onze God, kan Israël haar hulp en heil vinden. 24 Sinds onze jeugd hebben wij gezien dat het bezit van onze voorouders is verspild aan afgoden: runderen, schapen, zonen en dochters. 25 Wij knielen neer in schaamte en schande, want wij en onze voorouders hebben sinds onze jeugd tegen de Here, onze God, gezondigd, wij hebben Hem niet gehoorzaamd.” ’

Ondanks alles wil God graag dat Israël bij Hem terugkomt
3 De Heer zei: "Als een man zijn vrouw wegstuurt en zij trouwt met een andere man, zal haar eerste man haar dan nog terug willen hebben? Natuurlijk niet. Als zoiets in een land gebeurde, zou dat het land geestelijk bederven.[a] Jij, Israël, hebt heel veel mannen gehad.[b] Toch wil Ik dat je bij Mij terugkomt. 2 Kijk eens rond naar de heuvels om je heen. Wijs er eens één aan waar je níet met een man geslapen hebt?[c] Langs de kant van de weg zat jij als een hoer op mannen te wachten, zoals een Arabier in de woestijn reizigers opwacht om ze te beroven. Je hebt het land bedorven met je ontrouw en je slechtheid. 3 Daarom heb Ik het er voor straf niet meer laten regenen. Daarom is de lenteregen niet gevallen. Maar jij loopt rond als een hoer en je weigert je ervoor te schamen. 4 Je zegt wel: 'U bent mijn Vader. U heeft altijd van mij gehouden. 5 U vergeeft het allemaal wel. U zal vast niet boos blijven.' En intussen doe je steeds ergere dingen."
God noemt Israël 'Wegloopster' en Juda 'Ontrouw'
6 In de tijd dat koning Josia over Juda regeerde, zei de Heer tegen mij: "Heb je gezien wat Wegloopster (= Israël) gedaan heeft? Ze heeft de gewoonte om op elke hoge berg en onder elke grote boom met mannen naar bed te gaan.[d] 7 Toen ze dat allemaal deed, zei Ik: 'Kom alsjeblieft weer bij Mij terug!' Maar ze kwam niet terug. Haar zus Ontrouw (= Juda) zag dat. 8 Ze zag dat Ik Wegloopster, Israël, een echtscheidings-brief gaf en haar daarmee wegstuurde, omdat ze ontrouw aan Mij was geweest.[e]
Maar Ik merkte dat Juda zich daardoor niet liet afschrikken. Ook zij ging met andere mannen naar bed. 9 Daarmee bedierf ze het land. Want ze was ontrouw aan Mij: ze aanbad goden van steen en hout. 10 Juda deed wel alsof ze bij Mij terugkwam, maar dat waren alleen maar woorden. Haar hart kwam niet bij Mij terug, zegt de Heer."[f]
11 Daarom zei de Heer tegen mij: "Wegloopster Israël was minder schuldig dan Ontrouw Juda.[g] 12 Jeremia, ga nu naar buiten en roep naar het noorden: 'Kom terug bij Mij, weggelopen Israël! De Heer zegt: Ik zal niet meer boos op je zijn. Ik houd van je. Ik zal niet voor altijd boos op je blijven. 13 Geef alleen toe dat je fout was. Geef toe dat je Mij, jouw Heer God, verlaten hebt, en dat je onder elke grote boom andere goden aanbeden hebt. Geef toe dat je niet naar Mij hebt geluisterd, zegt de Heer.' "
God roept het volk Israël op om de andere goden weg te doen
14 De Heer zei: "Kom terug, mijn weggelopen kinderen, zegt de Heer. Want jullie horen bij Mij. Mijn volk, Ik ben met jou getrouwd. Ik zal een heel klein aantal van jullie naar Jeruzalem terugbrengen. Eén uit een hele stad, twee uit een hele familie. 15 Ik zal jullie goede herders geven, herders die jullie leiden zoals Ik het wil. Ze zullen jullie met wijsheid leiden. 16 Ooit zullen jullie weer een groot volk geworden zijn in het land. In die tijd zal er niet meer gesproken worden over de kist van het verbond.[h] Niemand zal er nog aan denken. Niemand zal er nog heen willen gaan. Hij zal vergeten zijn. Daarom zal er ook geen nieuwe kist meer gemaakt worden. 17 In die tijd zal Jeruzalem 'Troon van de Heer' worden genoemd. Alle volken zullen Mij in Jeruzalem komen aanbidden. Ze zullen geen slechte dingen meer doen. 18 In die tijd zal Juda naar Israël gaan. Ze zullen samen uit het land in het noorden terugkomen naar het land dat Ik aan jullie voorouders gegeven heb.
19 Ik was van plan om jou, Israël, een plaats tussen mijn zonen te geven. Ik had je een prachtig land gegeven, het mooiste land dat er is! Ik had gedacht dat je Mij je Vader zou noemen, en dat je altijd bij Mij zou blijven. 20 Maar zoals een vrouw die ontrouw wordt aan haar man, zo ben jij ontrouw aan Mij geworden, zegt de Heer.
21 Hoor! Op de heuvels huilt het volk Israël smekend om hulp. Ze hebben de verkeerde weg gekozen. Ze zijn hun Heer God vergeten. 22 Kom bij Mij terug, mijn weggelopen volk! Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat jullie Mij niet meer verlaten! Jullie zullen antwoorden: 'Hier komen we al! We komen naar U toe, want U bent onze Heer God! 23 We hebben onszelf voor de gek gehouden. Al die goden op de heuvels en de bergen konden ons niet helpen. Alleen onze Heer God kan ons helpen! 24 Die goden hebben onze ouders alles gekost, alles waar ze zo hard voor hebben gewerkt. Hun schapen en koeien, hun zonen en dochters. Ons leven lang hebben we niets meer. 25 We hebben niets meer over. Alleen nog onze schande. Want we hebben verkeerd gedaan tegen onze Heer God. Wij en onze ouders hebben ons hele leven verkeerd tegen U gedaan. We hebben nooit naar U willen luisteren.' " (lees verder)

- Jeremia 3:1 Met 'mannen' worden afgoden bedoeld. God was met het volk Israël 'getrouwd,' maar zijn 'vrouw' ging naar andere mannen: andere goden.
- Jeremia 3:2 Op alle heuvels stonden altaren voor andere goden. Daarmee was Israël dus ontrouw aan God.
- Jeremia 3:6 Israël en Juda worden hier vergeleken met vrouwen die ontrouw zijn aan hun man. Met de 'andere mannen waarmee ze naar bed gaan', wordt in deze vergelijking het aanbidden van andere goden bedoeld. Want daarmee waren Israël en Juda ontrouw aan God.
- Jeremia 3:8 Een vrouw die ontrouw was aan haar man, werd met een echtscheidings-brief weggestuurd. Hier wordt bedoeld dat God de bevolking van het noordelijke koninkrijk Israël gevangen had laten meenemen door de koning van Assur (in 722 vóór het jaar nul). Dat was gebeurd ongeveer 100 jaar voordat Jeremia deze dingen opschreef. Over Gods 'echtscheiding' van het koninkrijk Israël is te lezen in het bijbelboek HOSEA.
- Jeremia 3:10 Koning Josia van Juda wilde zelf echt de Heer dienen. Maar het lukte hem niet om de harten van de mensen werkelijk te veranderen zodat ze God weer zouden gaan dienen. Zodra hij gestorven was, gingen de mensen weer andere goden aanbidden. Het verhaal van koning Josia is te lezen in 2 Kronieken 34 en 35.
- Jeremia 3:11 Israël kwam gewoon niet bij de Heer terug. Juda dééd alsof ze bij de Heer terugkwam, maar deed dat niet werkelijk. Dat vond de Heer nóg erger.
- Jeremia 3:16 Lees Exodus 25:10-22. Die kist had eerst in de tent in de woestijn gestaan, en later in de tempel in Jeruzalem. Het was de plaats waar God 'woonde'.

3 God [a]says, “(A)If a husband divorces his wife
And she goes from him
And belongs to another man,
Will he still return to her?
Will not that land be completely [b]polluted?
But you (B)are a harlot with many [c]lovers;
Yet you (C)turn to Me,” declares Yahweh.
2 “Lift up your eyes to the (D)bare heights and see;
Where have you not been ravished?
By the roads you have (E)sat for them
Like [d]an Arab in the wilderness,
And you have (F)polluted a land
With your harlotry and with your evil.
3 Therefore the (G)showers have been withheld,
And the [e]late rain has not [f]come.
Yet you had a (H)harlot’s forehead;
You refused to feel dishonor.
4 Have you not just now called to Me,
‘(I)My Father, You are the [g](J)close companion of my (K)youth?
5 (L)Will He be angry forever?
Will He keep it to the end?’
Behold, you have spoken
And have done evil things,
And you have [h]had your way.”
Faithless Israel Called to Repentance
6 Then Yahweh said to me in the days of Josiah the king, “Have you seen what faithless Israel did? She (M)went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and she was a harlot there. 7 (N)I said, ‘After she has done all these things, she will return to Me’; but she did not return, and her (O)treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8 And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and (P)given her a certificate of divorce, yet her (Q)treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and was a harlot also. 9 So it was, because of the lightness of her harlotry, that she (R)polluted the land and committed adultery with (S)stones and trees. 10 Yet in spite of all this, her treacherous sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but rather in (T)lying,” declares Yahweh.
11 And Yahweh said to me, “(U)Faithless Israel has proved herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 Go and call out these words toward the north and say,
‘[i](V)Return, faithless Israel,’ declares Yahweh;
‘(W)I will not [j]look upon you in anger.
For I am (X)One of lovingkindness,’ declares Yahweh;
‘I will not be angry forever.
13 Only [k](Y)acknowledge your iniquity,
That you have transgressed against Yahweh your God
And have (Z)scattered your ways of harlotry to the strangers (AA)under every green tree,
And you have not listened to My voice,’ declares Yahweh.
14 ‘[l]Return, O faithless sons,’ declares Yahweh;
‘For I am a (AB)master to you,
And I will take you one from a city and two from a family,
And (AC)I will bring you to Zion.’
15 “Then I will give you (AD)shepherds after My own heart, who will [m](AE)shepherd you on knowledge and understanding. 16 It shall be in those days when you are multiplied and fruitful in the land,” declares Yahweh, “they will (AF)no longer say, ‘The ark of the covenant of Yahweh.’ And it will not come upon the heart, nor will they remember it, nor will they miss it, nor will it be made again. 17 At that time they will call Jerusalem ‘The (AG)Throne of Yahweh,’ and (AH)all the nations will be gathered to it, to Jerusalem, for the (AI)name of Yahweh; nor will they (AJ)walk anymore after the stubbornness of their evil heart. 18 (AK)In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel, and they will come together (AL)from the land of the north to the (AM)land that I gave your fathers as an inheritance.
19 “Then I said,
‘How I would set you among [n]My sons
And give you a pleasant land,
The most (AN)beautiful inheritance of the nations!’
And I said, ‘You shall call Me, (AO)“My Father,”
And not turn away from following Me.’
20 Surely, as a woman treacherously departs from her [o]lover,
So you have (AP)dealt treacherously with Me,
O house of Israel,” declares Yahweh.
21 A voice is heard on the (AQ)bare heights,
The weeping and the supplications of the sons of Israel;
Because they have perverted their way,
They have (AR)forgotten Yahweh their God.
22 [p]“Return, O faithless sons;
(AS)I will heal your faithlessness.”
“Behold, we come to You,
For You are Yahweh our God.
23 Surely, (AT)the hills are a lie,
A tumult on the mountains.
Surely in (AU)Yahweh our God
Is the salvation of Israel.
24 “But (AV)the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our fathers since our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 Let us lie down in our (AW)shame, and let our dishonor cover us; for we have sinned against Yahweh our God, we and our fathers, (AX)from our youth even to this day. And we have not listened to the voice of Yahweh our God.”

3 They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the Lord.
2 Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.
3 Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed.
4 Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?
5 Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.
6 The Lord said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.
7 And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.
9 And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.
10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the Lord.
11 And the Lord said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.
12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever.
13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the Lord.
14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:
15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.
16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the Lord, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the Lord: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.
17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.
18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.
19 But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.
20 Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the Lord.
21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the Lord their God.
22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the Lord our God.
23 Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel.
24 For shame hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
25 We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.
