Jeremias brev till judarna i Babel
29 Detta är vad som stod i det brev[a] som profeten Jeremia sände från Jerusalem till de äldste som ännu levde kvar i fångenskapen och till prästerna, profeterna och allt folket, dem som Nebukadnessar hade fört bort från Jerusalem till Babel, 2 (A) sedan kung Jekonja hade lämnat Jerusalem tillsammans med drottningmodern och hovmännen, Juda och Jerusalems furstar samt hantverkarna och smederna. 3 Jeremia sände brevet med Eleasa, Shafans son, och Gemarja, Hilkias son, när Juda kung Sidkia sände dem till Babels kung Nebukadnessar. Brevet löd:
4 Så säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud, till alla de fångar som jag har låtit föra bort från Jerusalem till Babel: 5 Bygg hus och bo i dem, plantera trädgårdar och ät deras frukt. 6 Ta er hustrur och föd söner och döttrar, ta hustrur åt era söner och gift bort era döttrar, så att de föder söner och döttrar. Föröka er där och bli inte färre. 7 Och sök den stads bästa dit jag har fört er i fångenskap och be för den till Herren. När det går väl för den, går det också väl för er.
8 (B) För så säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud: Låt er inte luras av de profeter som finns bland er, inte heller av era spåmän, och lyssna inte till de drömmar som ni drömmer, 9 (C) för de profeterar lögn för er i mitt namn. Jag har inte sänt dem, säger Herren.
10 (D) För så säger Herren: När sjuttio år har gått för Babel[b] ska jag ta mig an er och uppfylla mitt löfte att föra er tillbaka till denna plats. 11 (E) Jag vet vilka tankar jag har för er, säger Herren, nämligen fridens tankar och inte ofärdens för att ge er en framtid och ett hopp. 12 (F) Ni ska kalla på mig och komma och be till mig, och jag ska höra er. 13 (G) Ni ska söka mig, och ni ska också finna mig om ni söker mig av hela ert hjärta. 14 (H) För jag ska låta er finna mig, säger Herren. Jag ska göra slut på er fångenskap och samla er från alla de folk och alla de orter dit jag har drivit bort er, säger Herren. Jag ska låta er komma tillbaka till den plats från vilken jag förde er bort som fångar.
15 Men ni säger: ”Herren har låtit profeter uppstå åt oss i Babel.” 16 För så säger Herren till den kung som sitter på Davids tron och till allt det folk som bor i denna stad, era bröder som inte har gått bort i fångenskap tillsammans med er, 17 (I) ja, så säger Herren Sebaot: Se, jag ska sända svärd, svält och pest mot dem och låta dem räknas som odugliga fikon, så dåliga att man inte kan äta dem. 18 (J) Jag ska förfölja dem med svärd, svält och pest och göra dem till ett avskräckande exempel för alla riken på jorden, till förbannelse och häpnad, förakt och vanära bland alla de folk dit jag har drivit bort dem. 19 (K) Ty, säger Herren, de har inte lyssnat till mina ord, som jag har sänt till dem genom mina tjänare profeterna. Gång på gång sände jag dem, men ni har inte lyssnat, säger Herren.
20 Men hör nu Herrens ord, alla ni fångna som jag har sänt från Jerusalem bort till Babel: 21 Så säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud, om Ahab, Kolajas son, och om Sidkia, Maasejas son, som profeterar lögn för er i mitt namn: Se, jag ska ge dem i den babyloniske kungen Nebukadressars hand och han ska låta döda dem inför era ögon. 22 (L) Och alla fångar från Juda som är i Babel ska från dem hämta denna förbannelse och säga: ”Må Herren göra med dig som med Sidkia och Ahab, som Babels kung lät steka i eld.” 23 (M) För de har gjort något som är en dårskap i Israel. De har begått äktenskapsbrott med andras hustrur och har talat lögn i mitt namn, något som jag inte har befallt. Jag är den som vet det och är vittne till det, säger Herren.
Guds dom över Shemaja
24 Till nehelamiten Shemaja ska du säga: 25 Så säger Herren Sebaot, Israels Gud: Du har sänt brev i ditt eget namn till allt folket i Jerusalem och till prästen Sefanja, Maasejas son, och alla de andra prästerna och sagt: 26 ”Herren har satt dig till präst i prästen Jojadas[c] ställe, för att det ska finnas tillsyningsmän i Herrens hus över varje galen och självutnämnd profet, och för att du ska sätta sådana i stock och halsjärn. 27 Varför har du då inte tillrättavisat Jeremia från Anatot som uppträder som profet för er? 28 Därför har han kunnat sända bud till oss i Babel och säga: Än är det lång tid kvar. Bygg hus åt er, bo i dem och plantera trädgårdar och ät deras frukt.”
29 Prästen Sefanja läste upp brevet för profeten Jeremia. 30 Då kom Herrens ord till Jeremia. Han sade: 31 ”Sänd bud till alla de fångna och säg: Så säger Herren om nehelamiten Shemaja: Shemaja har profeterat för er, men jag har inte sänt honom. Han har fått er att lita på en lögn. 32 (N) Därför säger Herren så: Se, jag ska straffa nehelamiten Shemaja och hans efterkommande. Ingen av dem ska få bo bland detta folk, och han ska inte få se det goda som jag vill göra med mitt folk, säger Herren, för han har predikat avfall från Herren.”

29 Nabucodonosor se llevó cautivos a Babilonia a los ancianos, sacerdotes y profetas que estaban en Jerusalén, lo mismo que a todo el pueblo. Desde Jerusalén el profeta Jeremías envió una carta a los que sobrevivieron al exilio. Éste es el texto de la carta, 2 la cual envió después de que salieron el rey Jeconías, la reina, el personal de palacio, los príncipes de Judá y de Jerusalén, los artífices y los ingenieros de Jerusalén.(A) 3 Los mensajeros fueron Elasa hijo de Safán y Gemarías hijo de Hilcías, a quienes Sedequías rey de Judá envió a Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia. A la letra decía:
4 «Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel, a todos los cautivos que permití que fueran llevados de Jerusalén a Babilonia: 5 “Construyan casas, y habítenlas; planten huertos y coman de sus frutos. 6 Cásense, y tengan hijos e hijas; den mujeres a sus hijos, y maridos a sus hijas, para que tengan hijos e hijas; y multiplíquense allá. ¡No se reduzcan en número! 7 Procuren la paz de la ciudad a la que permití que fueran llevados. Rueguen al Señor por ella, porque si ella tiene paz, también tendrán paz ustedes.”
8 »Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel: “Que no los engañen los profetas que se encuentran entre ustedes, ni sus adivinos. No hagan caso de los sueños que tengan. 9 Porque ellos falsamente profetizan en mi nombre. Yo no los he enviado.”

10 »Así ha dicho el Señor: “Cuando se cumplan los setenta años de Babilonia,(B) yo iré a visitarlos, y les cumpliré mi promesa de hacerlos volver a este lugar. 11 Sólo yo sé los planes que tengo para ustedes. Son planes para su bien, y no para su mal, para que tengan un futuro lleno de esperanza.”

12 »Entonces ustedes me pedirán en oración que los ayude, y yo atenderé sus peticiones. 13 Cuando ustedes me busquen, me hallarán, si me buscan de todo corazón.(C) 14 Ustedes me hallarán, y yo haré que vuelvan de su exilio, pues los reuniré de todas las naciones y de todos los lugares adonde los arrojé. Yo haré que ustedes vuelvan al lugar de donde permití que se los llevaran.»

15 Según ustedes, el Señor ya les ha levantado profetas en Babilonia. 16 Pero así ha dicho el Señor acerca del rey que ha sucedido a David en el trono, y acerca de todo el pueblo que vive en esta ciudad, y de sus compatriotas que no fueron llevados con ustedes en cautiverio:
17 «Yo envío contra ellos espada, hambre y peste. Voy a ponerlos como a los higos malos, que de tan malos no se pueden comer. Lo ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos. 18 Los perseguiré con la espada, el hambre y la peste. Dejaré que sean el escarnio y la burla de todos los reinos de la tierra y de las naciones por las que los he arrojado. Serán motivo de espanto, y la gente usará su nombre como maldición, 19 por no haber hecho caso de mis palabras, que una y otra vez les comuniqué por medio de mis siervos los profetas.

20 »Ustedes, los que fueron llevados en cautiverio de Jerusalén a Babilonia, oigan la palabra del Señor. 21 Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel acerca de Ajab hijo de Colaías, y de Sedequías hijo de Maseías, esos dos que falsamente les profetizan en mi nombre: “Voy a ponerlos en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y ante sus propios ojos ese rey les quitará la vida.” 22 Todos los que fueron llevados de Judá a Babilonia los convertirán en objeto de maldición, y dirán: “Que el Señor haga contigo lo mismo que hizo con Sedequías y Ajab, a quienes el rey de Babilonia condenó a la hoguera.” 23 Estos dos hicieron mucho mal en Israel: cometieron adulterio con las mujeres de su prójimo, y en el nombre del Señor pronunciaron falsamente palabras que él no les mandó decir. Es un hecho que esto fue así.

24 »A Semaías de Nejelán le dirás: 25 “Así ha dicho el Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel: Tú has enviado cartas en tu nombre a todo el pueblo en Jerusalén, lo mismo que al sacerdote Sofonías hijo de Maseías, y a todos los sacerdotes. Según tú dices, 26 el Señor te ha designado como sacerdote en lugar del sacerdote Joyadá, para que en la casa del Señor te encargues de todo loco que profetice, y lo pongas en el calabozo y en el cepo. 27 Si es así, ¿por qué no has reprendido a Jeremías de Anatot, que también les ha profetizado? 28 Porque Jeremías mandó a decirnos en Babilonia que nuestro cautiverio será largo, y que debemos construir casas, y habitarlas; y plantar huertos y comer de sus frutos.”»
29 El sacerdote Sofonías leyó esta carta en voz alta al profeta Jeremías. 30 Entonces la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías, y le dijo:
31 «Envía este mensaje a todos los cautivos: “Así ha dicho el Señor acerca de Semaías de Nejelán: Puesto que Semaías les profetizó sin que yo lo hubiera enviado, con lo que hizo que ustedes confiaran en una mentira, 32 el Señor ha dicho que va a castigar a Semaías de Nejelán y a su descendencia, por haberlos incitado a rebelarse contra él. No tendrá descendientes varones entre este pueblo, ni vivirá para ver el bien que él hara a su pueblo.”»

Letter to the Exiles in Babylon. 1 These are the words of the scroll which Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, to the priests, the prophets, and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar exiled from Jerusalem to Babylon. 2 This was after King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the court officials, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the artisans and smiths had left Jerusalem.(A) 3 Delivered in Babylon by Elasah,[a] son of Shaphan, and by Gemariah, son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah, king of Judah, sent to the king of Babylon, the letter read:
4 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I exiled from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their fruits. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters. Increase there; do not decrease. 7 Seek the welfare of the city to which I have exiled you; pray for it to the Lord, for upon its welfare your own depends.(B) 8 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not be deceived by the prophets and diviners who are among you; do not listen to those among you who dream dreams,(C) 9 for they prophesy lies to you in my name; I did not send them—oracle of the Lord.(D)
10 For thus says the Lord: Only after seventy years have elapsed for Babylon will I deal with you and fulfill for you my promise to bring you back to this place.(E) 11 For I know well the plans I have in mind for you—oracle of the Lord—plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope. 12 When you call me, and come and pray to me, I will listen to you.(F) 13 When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, 14 I will let you find me—oracle of the Lord—and I will change your lot; I will gather you together from all the nations and all the places to which I have banished you—oracle of the Lord—and bring you back to the place from which I have exiled you.(G) 15 As for your saying, “The Lord has raised up for us prophets here in Babylon”—
16 Thus says the Lord concerning the king sitting on David’s throne and all the people living in this city, your kinsmen who did not go with you into exile; 17 thus says the Lord of hosts: I am sending against them sword, famine, and pestilence. I will make them like rotten figs, so spoiled that they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with sword, famine, and pestilence, and make them an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse, a desolation, a hissing, and a reproach to all the nations among which I have banished them,(H) 19 because they did not listen to my words—oracle of the Lord—even though I kept sending them my servants the prophets, but they would not listen to them—oracle of the Lord.(I)
20 As for you, listen to the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon. 21 This is what the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says about Ahab, son of Kolaiah, and Zedekiah, son of Maaseiah, who prophesy lies to you in my name: I am handing them over to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, who will kill them before your eyes.(J) 22 And because of them this curse will be used by all the exiles of Judah in Babylon: “May the Lord make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in fire,” 23 because they have committed an outrage in Israel, committing adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and alleging in my name things I did not command. I know, I am witness—oracle of the Lord.(K)
The False Prophet Shemaiah. 24 To Shemaiah, the Nehelamite, say: 25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Because you sent documents in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to Zephaniah, the priest, son of Maaseiah, and to all the priests saying: 26 [b]“It is the Lord who has appointed you priest in place of the priest Jehoiada, to provide officers for the house of the Lord, that you may confine in stocks or pillory any madman who poses as a prophet. 27 Why, then, have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth who poses as a prophet among you? 28 For he sent this message to us in Babylon: It will be a long time; build houses to live in; plant gardens and eat their fruit. . . .”
29 When the priest Zephaniah read this letter to Jeremiah the prophet, 30 the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 Send to all the exiles: Thus says the Lord concerning Shemaiah, the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah prophesies to you, although I did not send him, and has led you to rely on a lie, 32 therefore thus says the Lord, I will punish Shemaiah, the Nehelamite, and his descendants. None of them shall dwell among this people to see the good I will do for this people—oracle of the Lord—because he preached rebellion against the Lord.

- 29:3 Elasah: probably the brother of Ahikam (cf. 26:24). Gemariah: probably the son of the high priest Hilkiah; cf. 2 Kgs 22:4. Zedekiah had dispatched these men to Nebuchadnezzar for some other purpose, possibly the payment of tribute, but Jeremiah took advantage of their mission to send his letter with them.
- 29:26–29 Jeremiah’s message to Shemaiah is not completely preserved in the current Hebrew text, hence the incomplete sentence in vv. 25–28.

A Letter to the Exiles
29 This is the text of the letter(A) that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.(B) 2 (This was after King Jehoiachin[a](C) and the queen mother,(D) the court officials and the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the skilled workers and the artisans had gone into exile from Jerusalem.) 3 He entrusted the letter to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. It said:
4 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried(E) into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 “Build(F) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.(G) 7 Also, seek(H) the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray(I) to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” 8 Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets(J) and diviners among you deceive(K) you. Do not listen to the dreams(L) you encourage them to have.(M) 9 They are prophesying lies(N) to you in my name. I have not sent(O) them,” declares the Lord.
10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years(P) are completed for Babylon, I will come to you(Q) and fulfill my good promise(R) to bring you back(S) to this place. 11 For I know the plans(T) I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper(U) you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.(V) 12 Then you will call(W) on me and come and pray(X) to me, and I will listen(Y) to you. 13 You will seek(Z) me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.(AA) 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back(AB) from captivity.[b] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”(AC)
15 You may say, “The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,” 16 but this is what the Lord says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your fellow citizens who did not go with you into exile— 17 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will send the sword, famine and plague(AD) against them and I will make them like figs(AE) that are so bad they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent(AF) to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse[c](AG) and an object of horror,(AH) of scorn(AI) and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them. 19 For they have not listened to my words,”(AJ) declares the Lord, “words that I sent to them again and again(AK) by my servants the prophets.(AL) And you exiles have not listened either,” declares the Lord.
20 Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I have sent(AM) away from Jerusalem to Babylon. 21 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies(AN) to you in my name: “I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will put them to death before your very eyes. 22 Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon will use this curse: ‘May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned(AO) in the fire.’ 23 For they have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery(AP) with their neighbors’ wives, and in my name they have uttered lies—which I did not authorize. I know(AQ) it and am a witness(AR) to it,” declares the Lord.
Message to Shemaiah
24 Tell Shemaiah the Nehelamite, 25 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah(AS) son of Maaseiah, and to all the other priests. You said to Zephaniah, 26 ‘The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac(AT) who acts like a prophet into the stocks(AU) and neck-irons. 27 So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you? 28 He has sent this message(AV) to us in Babylon: It will be a long time.(AW) Therefore build(AX) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.’”
29 Zephaniah(AY) the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send this message to all the exiles: ‘This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah(AZ) the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send(BA) him, and has persuaded you to trust in lies, 32 this is what the Lord says: I will surely punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants.(BB) He will have no one left among this people, nor will he see the good(BC) things I will do for my people, declares the Lord, because he has preached rebellion(BD) against me.’”
