20 När prästen Pashchur, Immers son, som var föreståndare i Herrens hus, hörde Jeremia profetera detta, 2 lät han prygla profeten Jeremia och satte honom sedan i stocken vid Övre Benjaminsporten till Herrens hus. 3 När Pashchur följande dag släppte loss Jeremia ur stocken, sa Jeremia till honom: ”Herren kallar dig inte Pashchur utan Magor Missaviv[a]. 4 För så säger Herren: ’Jag ska göra dig till skräck för dig själv och för alla dina vänner. Du kommer att få se dem falla för sina fienders svärd. Jag ska överlämna hela Juda till kungen av Babylonien, och han ska föra dem bort till Babylonien och döda dem med svärd. 5 Denna stads alla rikedomar, all egendom och alla dyrbarheter och Judas kungars alla skatter ska jag ge i deras fienders hand. De ska ta det som byte och föra bort det till Babylon. 6 Och själv ska du, Pashchur, och alla som bor i ditt hus hamna i fångenskap. Du ska komma till Babylon, och där ska du dö och begravas, du och alla dina vänner som du har profeterat lögn för.’ ”
Jeremias klagan
7 Herre, du lurade mig,
och jag lät mig luras.
Du var för stark för mig,
du besegrade mig.
Jag har blivit till ständigt åtlöje,
alla hånar mig.
8 För varje gång jag ska säga något måste jag ropa
och skrika om våld och förstörelse.
Herrens ord har gjort att jag
ständigt utsatts för spe och hån.
9 Men när jag tänker:
”Jag ska inte tänka på honom
och inte mer tala i hans namn,”
då blir det som om det brann en eld inom mig,
instängd i mitt innersta.
Jag försöker stå emot,
men jag kan inte.
10 Jag hör många viska:
”Skräck från alla håll, ange honom!
Vi ska ange honom.”
Alla som stått mig nära
väntar på att jag ska falla.
”Kanske kommer han att låta sig luras,
så att vi får övertaget
och kan få vår hämnd på honom.”
11 Men Herren står vid min sida
som en stark stridsman.
Därför ska mina förföljare komma på fall.
De kan inte besegra mig.
De kommer att skämmas
och bli utan framgång,
förödmjukade för all framtid
så att det aldrig ska glömmas.
12 Härskarornas Herre, du som prövar den rättfärdige,
du som ser hjärta och sinne,
låt mig få se dig ta hämnd på dem!
Jag har överlämnat min sak åt dig.
13 Sjung till Herrens ära,
prisa Herren!
Han räddar den fattige
ur de ondas hand.
14 Förbannad den dag då jag föddes!
Låt inte den dag bli välsignad då min mor födde mig!
15 Förbannad den man
som meddelade min far nyheten
att han fått en son,
och gjorde honom så glad.
16 Låt det gå den mannen på samma sätt
som det gick de städer
som Herren ödelade utan förbarmande.
Låt honom få höra klagan på morgonen
och stridsrop vid middagstid,
17 därför att han inte dödade mig i moderlivet,
så att min mor hade fått bli min grav
och hennes livmoder havande för alltid.
18 Varför blev jag någonsin född,
för att se elände och sorg
och sluta mina dagar i skam?

The Word of God to Pashhur
20 Now (A)Pashhur the son of (B)Immer, the priest who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things. 2 Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high (C)gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.
3 And it happened on the next day that Pashhur brought Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord has not called your name Pashhur, but [a]Magor-Missabib. 4 For thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall see it. I will (D)give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon and slay them with the sword. 5 Moreover I (E)will deliver all the wealth of this city, all its produce, and all its precious things; all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies, who will plunder them, seize them, and (F)carry them to Babylon. 6 And you, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. You shall go to Babylon, and there you shall die, and be buried there, you and all your friends, to whom you have (G)prophesied lies.’ ”
Jeremiah’s Unpopular Ministry
7 O Lord, You [b]induced me, and I was persuaded;
(H)You are stronger than I, and have prevailed.
(I)I am [c]in derision daily;
Everyone mocks me.
8 For when I spoke, I cried out;
(J)I shouted, “Violence and plunder!”
Because the word of the Lord was made to me
A reproach and a derision daily.
9 Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him,
Nor speak anymore in His name.”
But His word was in my heart like a (K)burning fire
Shut up in my bones;
I was weary of holding it back,
And (L)I could not.
10 (M)For I heard many [d]mocking:
“Fear on every side!”
“Report,” they say, “and we will report it!”
(N)All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying,
“Perhaps he can be induced;
Then we will prevail against him,
And we will take our revenge on him.”
11 But the Lord is (O)with me as a mighty, awesome One.
Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and will not (P)prevail.
They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not prosper.
Their (Q)everlasting confusion will never be forgotten.
12 But, O Lord of hosts,
You who (R)test the righteous,
And see the [e]mind and heart,
(S)Let me see Your vengeance on them;
For I have pleaded my cause before You.
13 Sing to the Lord! Praise the Lord!
For (T)He has delivered the life of the poor
From the hand of evildoers.
14 (U)Cursed be the day in which I was born!
Let the day not be blessed in which my mother bore me!
15 Let the man be cursed
Who brought news to my father, saying,
“A male child has been born to you!”
Making him very glad.
16 And let that man be like the cities
Which the Lord (V)overthrew, and did not relent;
Let him (W)hear the cry in the morning
And the shouting at noon,
17 (X)Because he did not kill me from the womb,
That my mother might have been my grave,
And her womb always enlarged with me.
18 (Y)Why did I come forth from the womb to (Z)see [f]labor and sorrow,
That my days should be consumed with shame?

Jeremiah Persecuted by Pashhur
20 Now (A)Pashhur the priest, the son of (B)Immer, who was (C)chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2 Then (D)Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him (E)in the stocks that were in the upper (F)Benjamin Gate of the house of the Lord. 3 The next day, when (G)Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord does not call your name (H)Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side. 4 For thus says the Lord: Behold, I will make you (I)a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall strike them down with the sword. 5 Moreover, (J)I will give all the wealth of the city, all its gains, all its (K)prized belongings, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them and seize them and carry them to Babylon. 6 And you, (L)Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. To Babylon you shall go, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your friends, (M)to whom you have prophesied falsely.”
7 O Lord, (N)you have deceived me,
and I was deceived;
(O)you are stronger than I,
and you have prevailed.
(P)I have become a laughingstock all the day;
everyone mocks me.
8 For whenever I speak, I cry out,
I shout, (Q)“Violence and destruction!”
For (R)the word of the Lord has become for me
(S)a reproach and (T)derision all day long.
9 If I say, “I will not mention him,
or speak any more in his name,”
(U)there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
shut up in my bones,
and (V)I am weary with holding it in,
and I cannot.
10 (W)For I hear many whispering.
(X)Terror is on every side!
“Denounce him! (Y)Let us denounce him!”
say all my (Z)close friends,
(AA)watching for (AB)my fall.
“Perhaps he will be deceived;
then (AC)we can overcome him
and take our revenge on him.”
11 But (AD)the Lord is with me as a dread warrior;
therefore my persecutors will stumble;
(AE)they will not overcome me.
(AF)They will be greatly shamed,
for they will not succeed.
Their (AG)eternal dishonor
will never be forgotten.
12 O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous,
(AH)who sees the heart and the mind,[a]
let me see your vengeance upon them,
for to you have I committed my cause.
13 (AI)Sing to the Lord;
praise the Lord!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
from the hand of evildoers.
14 (AJ)Cursed be the day
on which I was born!
The day when my mother bore me,
let it not be blessed!
15 Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,
“A son is born to you,”

16 Let that man be like (AL)the cities
that the Lord overthrew without pity;
(AM)let him hear a cry in the morning
and an alarm at noon,
17 (AN)because he did not kill me in the womb;
so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb forever great.

(AP)to see toil and sorrow,
and spend my days in shame?
