Guds folks trolöshet
2 Herrens ord kom till mig: 2 ”Gå och förkunna för Jerusalem: Så säger Herren:
’Jag minns hur hängiven du var i ungdomen,
hur du älskade mig som brud
och hur du följde mig genom öknen,
genom ett land där ingen sår något.
3 Israel var heligt för Herren,
det första av hans skörd.
Alla som åt av det
drog på sig skuld
och blev drabbade av olycka, säger Herren.’ ”
4 Hör Herrens ord, Jakobs ätt, Israels alla släkter! 5 Så säger Herren:
”Vad var det för fel era fäder fann hos mig,
eftersom de gick bort från mig
och följde de värdelösa avgudarna
och själva blev värdelösa?
6 De frågade inte: ’Var är Herren,
som ledde oss ut ur Egypten,
genom öknen,
genom ett öde, oländigt land,
torkans och skuggornas land,
ett land som ingen vill passera igenom
och där ingen vill bo?’
7 Jag ledde er till ett bördigt land,
för att ni skulle få äta av dess frukt och dess goda.
Men när ni kom dit orenade ni mitt land
och gjorde min egendom avskyvärd.
8 Prästerna frågade inte:
’Var är Herren?’
De som hade hand om lagen
kände mig inte,
ledarna satte sig upp mot mig,
profeterna profeterade i Baals namn
och följde värdelösa avgudar.
9 Därför kommer jag att gå till rätta med er än en gång, säger Herren,
ja, även med era barn i kommande generationer ska jag gå till rätta.
10 Dra bort till kittéernas[a] kuster
och se efter,
sänd någon till Kedar
för att noga undersöka
om något sådant har skett:
11 Har något annat folk någonsin bytt ut sina gudar,
som ändå inte är några gudar?
Men mitt folk har bytt bort sin härlighet[b]
mot en värdelös avgud.
12 Häpna över detta, ni himlar,
rys och bäva, säger Herren.
13 Mitt folk har begått en dubbel synd:
Det har övergett mig,
källan med det levande vattnet,
och de har grävt dåliga brunnar åt sig,
brunnar som inte håller vatten.
14 Är Israel en tjänare eller född till slav?
Varför har han blivit ett byte?
15 Lejonen ryter och morrar mot honom.
De har lagt hans land öde
och bränt ner hans städer,
så att ingen kan bo i dem.
16 Män från Memfis och Tachpanches
betar din hjässa kal.
17 Är det inte du själv som har dragit detta över dig
genom att du övergav Herren, din Gud,
när han ville leda dig på vägen?
18 Varför ska du nu gå till Egypten
för att dricka Shichors vatten?
Och varför gå till Assyrien
för att dricka av Eufratflodens vatten?
19 Din ondska kommer att straffa dig,
ditt avfall att tukta dig.
Besinna och inse därför
hur ont och bittert det är
att du överger Herren, din Gud,
och inte fruktar mig längre, säger Herren, härskarornas Herre.
20 För länge sedan bröt jag sönder ditt ok
och slet av dina band.[c]
Du sa: ’Jag vill inte tjäna.’
På varje höjd och under varje grönskande träd
lade du dig ner och prostituerade dig.
21 Jag planterade dig som ett ädelt vin
av allra bästa slag.
Hur har du kunnat förvandlas för mig
till en oduglig, vildvuxen ranka?
22 Även om du tvättar dig med lut
och rikligt med såpa
består din synds fläckar inför mig,” säger Herren, Herren.
23 ”Hur kan du säga:
’Jag har inte orenat mig
och inte sprungit efter baalsgudarna’?
Tänk efter hur du bar dig åt i dalen,
beakta vad du har gjort.
Du är som ett oroligt kamelsto,
som irrar hit och dit,
24 som en vildåsna, van vid öken,
som flåsar under parningstiden.
Vem kan tygla dess begär?
Ingen behöver springa sig trött efter den,
i parningstiden är den lätt att finna.
25 Akta dig, så du inte springer av dig skorna
och får din strupe torr.
Men du säger:
’Det är ingen idé.
Jag älskar främmande gudar,
och dem måste jag följa.’
26 Som en tjuv tagen på bar gärning
ska Israel stå där med skam,
med sina kungar, furstar,
präster och profeter,
27 de som säger till en trästolpe: ’Du är min far’
och till en sten: ’Du har fött mig.’
De vänder ryggen mot mig,
inte ansiktet,
men när olyckan kommer ropar de:
’Kom och rädda oss!’
28 Var är då de gudar som du har gjort åt dig själv?
Låt dem nu komma till din räddning i olyckan, om de kan!
Du har ju lika många gudar
som du har städer, Juda.
29 Varför vill ni gå till rätta med mig?
Ni har ju alla gjort uppror mot mig, säger Herren.
30 Till ingen nytta har jag straffat era söner,
de tog inte emot någon tillrättavisning.
Som rovlystna lejon
har ert svärd ätit upp profeterna.
31 Ni släkte, ge akt på Herrens ord!
Har jag varit en öken för Israel,
ett mörkrets land?
Varför säger mitt folk:
’Vi går vart vi vill,
vi kommer inte mer tillbaka till dig.’
32 Skulle en ung flicka kunna glömma sina smycken,
eller en brud sin gördel?
Men av mitt folk har jag varit glömd i alla tider.
33 Hur skickligt hittar du inte vägen
i ditt sökande efter kärlek!
Till och med de sämsta bland kvinnorna
har en hel del att lära av dig.[d]
34 Dina kläder är fläckade av blod
från fattiga och oskyldiga.
De ertappades inte vid inbrott.
Trots allt detta[e]
35 säger du: ’Jag är oskyldig.
Han är inte vred på mig längre.’
Jag ska döma dig,
därför att du säger att du inte har syndat.
36 Varför far du än hit och än dit,
för att ta en annan väg?
Du ska bli besviken på Egypten
på samma sätt som du blev besviken på Assyrien.
37 Också därifrån kommer du att få gå
med händerna över huvudet.
Herren har förkastat dem som du litade på,
och du ska inte ha framgång med hjälp av dem.

Israel Forsakes the Lord
2 The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord,
“I remember the devotion of (A)your youth,
your love (B)as a bride,
(C)how you followed me in the wilderness,
(D)in a land not sown.
3 (E)Israel was holy to the Lord,
(F)the firstfruits of his harvest.
(G)All who ate of it incurred guilt;
disaster came upon them,
declares the Lord.”
4 Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the clans of the house of Israel. 5 Thus says the Lord:
(H)“What wrong did your fathers find in me
that they went far from me,
(I)and went after (J)worthlessness, and became worthless?
6 They did not say, (K)‘Where is the Lord
who brought us up from the land of Egypt,
who led us (L)in the wilderness,
in a land of deserts and pits,
in a land of drought and deep darkness,
in a land that none passes through,
where no man dwells?’
7 (M)And I brought you into a plentiful land
to enjoy its fruits and its good things.
But when you came in, (N)you defiled my land
and made my heritage an abomination.
8 The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’
(O)Those who handle the law did not know me;
(P)the shepherds[a] transgressed against me;
(Q)the prophets prophesied by Baal
and went after (R)things that do not profit.
9 “Therefore (S)I still contend with you,
declares the Lord,
and (T)with your children's children I will contend.
10 For cross to the coasts of (U)Cyprus and see,
or send to (V)Kedar and examine with care;
see if there has been such a thing.
11 (W)Has a nation changed its gods,
(X)even though they are no gods?
But my people (Y)have changed their glory
for (Z)that which does not profit.
12 Be appalled, (AA)O heavens, at this;
be shocked, be utterly desolate,
declares the Lord,
13 for my people have committed two evils:
(AB)they have forsaken (AC)me,
the fountain of (AD)living waters,
and hewed out cisterns for themselves,
broken cisterns that can hold no water.
14 (AE)“Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant?
Why then has he become a prey?
15 (AF)The lions have roared against him;
they have roared loudly.
They have made his land a waste;
his cities are in ruins, (AG)without inhabitant.
16 Moreover, the men of (AH)Memphis and (AI)Tahpanhes
(AJ)have shaved[b] the crown of your head.
17 (AK)Have you not brought this upon yourself
by forsaking the Lord your God,
when (AL)he led you in the way?
18 (AM)And now what do you gain by going to Egypt
to drink the waters of (AN)the Nile?[c]
(AO)Or what do you gain by going to Assyria
to drink the waters of (AP)the Euphrates?[d]
19 (AQ)Your evil will chastise you,
and (AR)your apostasy will reprove you.
Know and see that it is evil and (AS)bitter
for (AT)you to forsake the Lord your God;
the fear of me is not in you,
declares the Lord God of hosts.
20 “For long ago I (AU)broke your yoke
and burst your bonds;
but you said, (AV)‘I will not serve.’
Yes, (AW)on every high hill
and under every green tree
you bowed down (AX)like a whore.
21 (AY)Yet I planted you a choice vine,
wholly of pure seed.
(AZ)How then have you turned degenerate
and become a wild vine?
22 Though you wash yourself with lye
and use much soap,
(BA)the stain of your guilt is still before me,
declares the Lord God.
23 (BB)How can you say, ‘I am not unclean,
I have not gone after the Baals’?
Look at your way (BC)in the valley;
know what you have done—
a restless young camel running here and there,
24 (BD)a wild donkey used to the wilderness,
in her heat sniffing the wind!
Who can restrain her lust?
None who seek her need weary themselves;
in her month they will find her.
25 Keep (BE)your feet from going unshod
and (BF)your throat from thirst.
But you said, ‘It is hopeless,
(BG)for I have loved foreigners,
and after them I will go.’
26 “As a thief is shamed when caught,
so the house of Israel shall be shamed:
(BH)they, their kings, their officials,
their priests, and their prophets,
27 who say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’
and to a stone, ‘You gave me birth.’
For they have turned their back to me,
and not their face.
But (BI)in the time of their trouble they say,
‘Arise and save us!’
28 But (BJ)where are your gods
that you made for yourself?
Let them arise, (BK)if they can save you,
in your time of trouble;
for (BL)as many as your cities
are your gods, O Judah.
29 “Why do you contend with me?
You have all transgressed against me,
declares the Lord.
30 In vain have I (BM)struck your children;
they took no correction;
(BN)your own sword devoured your prophets
like a ravening lion.
31 And you, O generation, behold the word of the Lord.
Have I been a wilderness to Israel,
or a land of thick darkness?
Why then do my people say, ‘We are free,
we will come no more to you’?
32 (BO)Can a virgin forget her ornaments,
or a bride her attire?
Yet (BP)my people have forgotten me
days without number.
33 “How well you direct your course
to seek love!
So that even to wicked women
you have taught your ways.
34 Also on your skirts is found
(BQ)the lifeblood of the guiltless poor;
you did not find them (BR)breaking in.
Yet in spite of all these things
35 you say, ‘I am innocent;
surely his anger has turned from me.’
(BS)Behold, I will bring you to judgment
for (BT)saying, ‘I have not sinned.’
36 (BU)How much you go about,
changing your way!
You shall be (BV)put to shame by Egypt
as you were put to shame by Assyria.
37 From it too you will come away
with (BW)your hands on your head,
for the Lord has rejected those in whom you trust,
and you will not prosper by them.

2 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
3 Israel was holiness unto the Lord, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the Lord.
4 Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:
5 Thus saith the Lord, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
6 Neither said they, Where is the Lord that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?
7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.
8 The priests said not, Where is the Lord? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.
9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the Lord, and with your children's children will I plead.
10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.
11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.
12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord.
13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?
15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.
16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.
17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when he led thee by the way?
18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?
19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord God of hosts.
20 For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.
21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?
22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord God.
23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;
24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.
26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets.
27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.
29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the Lord.
30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
31 O generation, see ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?
32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.
34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.
35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.
36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.
37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the Lord hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.
