Jeremia bij de pottenbakker
18 De Heer zei tegen Jeremia: 2 "Ga naar het huis van de pottenbakker. Daar zal Ik verder tot je spreken." 3 Ik ging naar het huis van de pottenbakker. Hij was bezig iets op de draaischijf te maken. 4 Maar de pot op de draaischijf mislukte. Daarom begon hij overnieuw. Hij maakte met dezelfde klei een andere pot, waar hij wel tevreden over was.
5 Toen zei de Heer tegen mij: 6 "Volk van Israël, Ik kan met jullie toch hetzelfde doen als de pottenbakker met zijn klei? zegt de Heer. Let op, jullie zijn in mijn handen als de klei in de handen van de pottenbakker, volk van Israël! 7 De ene keer zeg Ik van een volk of koninkrijk dat Ik het zal uitrukken, afbreken en vernietigen. 8 Maar als dat volk dan stopt met de slechte dingen die het doet en gaat leven zoals Ik het wil, zal Ik mijn plannen veranderen. Ik zal niet doen wat Ik had besloten. 9 Een andere keer zeg Ik van een volk of koninkrijk dat Ik het zal opbouwen en machtig zal maken. 10 Maar als dat volk dingen doet die Ik niet wil en het niet naar Mij luistert, zal Ik mijn plannen veranderen. Ik zal niet de goede dingen doen die Ik over hen besloten had.
11 Zeg nu tegen de bewoners van Juda en Jeruzalem: 'Dit zegt de Heer: Ik leg een ramp voor jullie klaar. Ik heb mijn plannen klaar. Houd dus op met de slechte dingen die jullie doen. Leef voortaan zoals Ik het wil. Dan zal het niet gebeuren.' 12 Maar ze zullen antwoorden: 'Geen sprake van! We doen wat we zelf willen. We gaan onze eigen gang.'
13 Daarom zeg Ik: Ga eens bij andere volken vragen wie van hen ooit zoiets gehoord heeft, zoiets afschuwelijks als Jeruzalem heeft gedaan. 14 Zal de sneeuw ooit verdwijnen van de rotsen op de Libanon? Staan de beken met koud stromend water uit verre bergen ooit droog? 15 Zoals de sneeuw hoort op de Libanon en zoals er altijd water is in de bergbeken, zo hoort mijn volk bij Mij. Maar mijn volk is Mij vergeten. Ze brengen offers aan levenloze dingen. Ze zijn de verkeerde weg op gegaan. Ze hebben de oude, bekende wegen verlaten. Ze zijn nieuwe, ongebaande, slechte wegen op gegaan. 16 Daarom zal het slecht aflopen met hun land. Iedereen die het ziet, zal geschokt zijn. Iedereen die door het land trekt, zal zijn hoofd schudden. 17 Als een oostenwind zal Ik hen wegblazen en verspreiden. Ze zullen vluchten voor hun vijanden. Ik zal Mij omdraaien als ze in nood zijn. Ik zal niet meer voor hen zorgen."
Aanslag op Jeremia
18 Toen zeiden de mensen: "Laten we een plan bedenken om Jeremia uit de weg te ruimen. Want onze priesters weten heus wel wat ze moeten doen. Onze raadgevers zitten heus niet om raad verlegen. De profeten weten wel wat ze moeten zeggen! Laten we Jeremia ergens van beschuldigen. En trek je niets aan van wat hij allemaal zegt."
19 Jeremia zegt: "Heer, hoor eens wat mijn vijanden zeggen! 20 Ze hebben een val voor me opgezet. Ze willen me kwaad doen, terwijl ik het beste met hen voorheb! U weet dat ik voor hen heb gepleit bij U. U weet dat ik U heb gesmeekt om hen niet te straffen. 21 Heer, laat hun zonen dan maar sterven van de honger. Laat die mannen dan maar gedood worden door het zwaard. Laat hun vrouwen dan maar zonder kinderen en zonder man achterblijven. Laat hun mannen en zonen maar sterven. 22 Laten ze maar huilen en schreeuwen als U plotseling de vijand op hen afstuurt. Want ze willen me in de val laten lopen. 23 Heer, U weet van hun plannen om mij te vermoorden. Vergeef het hun niet. Laten ze maar gedood worden. Straf hen ervoor!"

18 The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, 2 “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear my words.”
3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he was making something on the wheels. 4 When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
5 Then Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, 6 “House of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter?” says Yahweh. “Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel. 7 At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it, 8 if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them. 9 At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, 10 if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good with which I said I would benefit them.
11 “Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Yahweh says: “Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a plan against you. Everyone return from his evil way now, and amend your ways and your doings.”’ 12 But they say, ‘It is in vain; for we will walk after our own plans, and we will each follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.’”
13 Therefore Yahweh says:
“Ask now among the nations,
‘Who has heard such things?’
The virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing.
14 Will the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field?
Will the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?
15 For my people have forgotten me.
They have burned incense to false gods.
They have been made to stumble in their ways
in the ancient paths,
to walk in byways, in a way not built up,
16 to make their land an astonishment,
and a perpetual hissing.
Everyone who passes by it will be astonished,
and shake his head.
17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy.
I will show them the back, and not the face,
in the day of their calamity.
18 Then they said, “Come! Let’s devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won’t perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let’s strike him with the tongue, and let’s not give heed to any of his words.”
19 Give heed to me, Yahweh,
and listen to the voice of those who contend with me.
20 Should evil be recompensed for good?
For they have dug a pit for my soul.
Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them,
to turn away your wrath from them.
21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine,
and give them over to the power of the sword.
Let their wives become childless and widows.
Let their men be killed
and their young men struck by the sword in battle.
22 Let a cry be heard from their houses
when you bring a troop suddenly on them;
for they have dug a pit to take me
and hidden snares for my feet.
23 Yet, Yahweh, you know all their counsel against me to kill me.
Don’t forgive their iniquity.
Don’t blot out their sin from your sight,
Let them be overthrown before you.
Deal with them in the time of your anger.

At the Potter’s House
18 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me. 6 He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay(A) in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand,(B) Israel. 7 If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted,(C) torn down and destroyed, 8 and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent(D) and not inflict on it the disaster(E) I had planned. 9 And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built(F) up and planted, 10 and if it does evil(G) in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider(H) the good I had intended to do for it.(I)
11 “Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, ‘This is what the Lord says: Look! I am preparing a disaster(J) for you and devising a plan(K) against you. So turn(L) from your evil ways,(M) each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.’(N) 12 But they will reply, ‘It’s no use.(O) We will continue with our own plans; we will all follow the stubbornness of our evil hearts.(P)’”
13 Therefore this is what the Lord says:
“Inquire among the nations:
Who has ever heard anything like this?(Q)
A most horrible(R) thing has been done
by Virgin(S) Israel.
14 Does the snow of Lebanon
ever vanish from its rocky slopes?
Do its cool waters from distant sources
ever stop flowing?[a]
15 Yet my people have forgotten(T) me;
they burn incense(U) to worthless idols,(V)
which made them stumble(W) in their ways,
in the ancient paths.(X)
They made them walk in byways,
on roads not built up.(Y)
16 Their land will be an object of horror(Z)
and of lasting scorn;(AA)
all who pass by will be appalled(AB)
and will shake their heads.(AC)
17 Like a wind(AD) from the east,
I will scatter them before their enemies;
I will show them my back and not my face(AE)
in the day of their disaster.”
18 They said, “Come, let’s make plans(AF) against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest(AG) will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise,(AH) nor the word from the prophets.(AI) So come, let’s attack him with our tongues(AJ) and pay no attention to anything he says.”
19 Listen to me, Lord;
hear what my accusers(AK) are saying!
20 Should good be repaid with evil?(AL)
Yet they have dug a pit(AM) for me.
Remember that I stood(AN) before you
and spoke in their behalf(AO)
to turn your wrath away from them.
21 So give their children over to famine;(AP)
hand them over to the power of the sword.(AQ)
Let their wives be made childless and widows;(AR)
let their men be put to death,
their young men(AS) slain by the sword in battle.
22 Let a cry(AT) be heard from their houses
when you suddenly bring invaders against them,
for they have dug a pit(AU) to capture me
and have hidden snares(AV) for my feet.
23 But you, Lord, know
all their plots to kill(AW) me.
Do not forgive(AX) their crimes
or blot out their sins from your sight.
Let them be overthrown before you;
deal with them in the time of your anger.(AY)
