Das unabwendbare Gericht
15 Und der Herr sprach zu mir:
Wenn gleich Mose und Samuel vor mir stünden,
so wollte ich doch mein Herz diesem Volk nicht zuwenden.
Treibe sie fort von meinem Angesicht, sie sollen gehen!
2 Und wenn sie zu dir sagen: Wo sollen wir hingehen?
so sage du ihnen: Der Herr antwortet euch also:
Wer dem Tode verfallen ist, der gehe zum Tode;
wer dem Schwerte, zum Schwerte;
wer dem Hunger, zum Hunger;
wer der Gefangenschaft, der gehe in die Gefangenschaft!
3 Denn ich will viererlei über sie bringen, spricht der Herr:
Das Schwert soll sie erwürgen;
die Hunde sollen sie herumschleifen;
die Vögel des Himmels und die Tiere des Feldes
sollen sie fressen und vertilgen!
4 Und ich will sie zur Mißhandlung hingeben allen Königreichen der Erde,
wegen Manasse, des Sohnes Hiskias, des Königs in Juda,
wegen dessen, was er getan hat zu Jerusalem.
5 Denn wer sollte sich deiner erbarmen, o Jerusalem?
Und wer sollte dir Beileid bezeugen?
Oder wer sollte bei dir einkehren, um sich nach deinem Wohlergehen zu erkundigen?
6 Du hast mich zurückgestoßen, spricht der Herr; du bist rückwärts gegangen;
darum habe ich meine Hand wider dich ausgestreckt, dich zu verderben.
Ich bin des Erbarmens müde geworden.
7 Darum habe ich sie mit der Wurfschaufel geworfelt in den Toren des Landes;
ich habe mein Volk der Kinder beraubt, es umgebracht;
denn von ihren eigenen Wegen kehrten sie nicht um.
8 Ihrer Witwen sind mehr geworden als des Sandes am Meer;
ich habe über die Mutter der Jünglinge
am hellen Mittag einen Verwüster gebracht,
ich habe sie unversehens mit Angst und Schrecken überfallen.
9 Die, welche sieben Kinder geboren hat, ist verwelkt;
sie hauchte ihre Seele aus;
ihre Sonne ist noch bei Tage untergegangen;
sie ist zuschanden und schamrot geworden.
Was von ihnen übrig ist, will ich vor ihren Feinden dem Schwerte preisgeben,
spricht der Herr.

10 O wehe mir, meine Mutter, daß du mich geboren hast,
einen Mann, mit dem jedermann hadert und zankt im ganzen Land!
Ich habe nichts ausgeliehen, und sie haben mir nichts entlehnt,
und doch fluchen sie mir alle!
11 Der Herr antwortete:
Wahrlich, ich will dich erhalten zum Besten!
Wahrlich, ich will verschaffen, daß zur Zeit der Not und der Angst
der Feind dich um Fürbitte angehen soll!
12 Kann man auch Eisen zerbrechen, Eisen vom Norden und Erz?
13 Deine Habe und deine Schätze will ich zur Beute geben ohne Entschädigung,
und zwar um aller deiner Sünden willen und in allen deinen Grenzen.
14 Und ich mache dich zu Knechten deiner Feinde in einem Lande, das du nicht kennst;
denn das Feuer, das durch meinen Zorn angezündet worden ist,
wird über euch lodern!
15 Herr, du weißt es, so gedenke nun meiner; nimm dich meiner an
und räche mich an meinen Verfolgern!
Nach deiner Langmut raffe mich nicht hin;
bedenke, daß ich um deinetwillen Schmach leide!
16 Fand ich deine Worte, so verschlang ich sie;
deine Worte sind zur Freude und Wonne meines Herzens geworden,
weil ich nach deinem Namen genannt bin,
Herr, Gott der Heerscharen!
17 Ich saß nicht in scherzender Gesellschaft, um mich zu belustigen;
aus Furcht vor deiner Hand saß ich allein;
denn du hattest mich mit Entrüstung erfüllt.
18 Warum ist mein Schmerz dauernd geworden
und meine Wunde tödlich, unheilbar?
Willst du mir denn sein wie ein trügerischer Bach,
wie Wasser, welches versiegt?
19 Darum spricht der Herr also:
Wenn du umkehrst, so will ich dich wieder vor mein Angesicht treten lassen;
und so du das Edle von Unedlen scheidest, sollst du sein wie mein Mund.
Jene sollen sich zu dir wenden;
du aber sollst dich nicht zu ihnen wenden!
20 Und ich will dich diesem Volke gegenüber zur festen, ehernen Mauer machen,
daß, wenn sie wider dich streiten, sie dich nicht zu überwältigen vermögen;
denn ich bin bei dir, um dich zu retten und zu befreien,
spricht der Herr.
21 Und ich will dich erretten aus der Hand der Bösen
und dich erlösen aus der Faust der Tyrannen.

Das Gericht lässt sich auch durch Fürbitte nicht mehr abwenden
15 Und der Herr sprach zu mir: Selbst wenn Mose und Samuel vor mich hinträten, so wollte ich doch mein Herz diesem Volk nicht zuwenden. Treibe sie hinweg von meinem Angesicht, sie sollen fortgehen!
2 Und wenn sie zu dir sagen: Wo sollen wir hingehen?, so sage du ihnen: So spricht der Herr: Wer für den Tod bestimmt ist, der gehe in den Tod, wer für das Schwert, zum Schwert; wer für den Hunger [bestimmt ist], [der gehe] zum Hunger, wer für die Gefangenschaft, in die Gefangenschaft!
3 Denn ich will viererlei über sie bringen, spricht der Herr: Das Schwert soll sie hinrichten; die Hunde sollen sie herumschleifen; die Vögel des Himmels und die Tiere des Feldes sollen sie fressen und vertilgen!
4 Und ich will sie allen Königreichen der Erde zum Entsetzen machen, wegen Manasses, des Sohnes Hiskias, des Königs in Juda, wegen dessen, was er in Jerusalem getan hat.
5 Denn wer sollte sich über dich erbarmen, Jerusalem? Und wer sollte dir Beileid bezeugen? Oder wer sollte bei dir einkehren, um sich nach deinem Wohlergehen zu erkundigen?
6 Du hast mich zurückgestoßen, spricht der Herr; du bist rückwärtsgegangen; darum habe ich meine Hand gegen dich ausgestreckt, um dich zu verderben. Ich bin des Erbarmens müde geworden.
7 Darum habe ich sie mit der Worfschaufel geworfelt in den Toren des Landes; ich habe mein Volk der Kinder beraubt, es umgebracht; denn von ihren eigenen Wegen kehrten sie nicht um.
8 Ihre Witwen sind mir zahlreicher geworden als der Sand am Meer; ich habe am hellen Mittag über die Mutter der auserwählten [Krieger] einen Verwüster gebracht; ich habe sie unversehens mit Angst und Schrecken überfallen.
9 Die, welche sieben Kinder geboren hat, ist verwelkt; sie hauchte ihre Seele aus; ihre Sonne ist noch bei Tag untergegangen; sie ist zuschanden und schamrot geworden, und ihren Überrest will ich dem Schwert preisgeben angesichts ihrer Feinde!, spricht der Herr.

10 »Wehe mir, meine Mutter, dass du mich geboren hast, einen Mann, mit dem jedermann streitet und zankt im ganzen Land! Ich habe nichts ausgeliehen, und sie haben mir nichts geliehen, und doch fluchen sie mir alle!«
11 Der Herr antwortete: Wahrlich, ich will dich erhalten zum Besten! Wahrlich, ich will machen, dass zur Zeit der Not und der Angst der Feind dich um Fürbitte angeht!
12 Kann man auch Eisen zerbrechen, Eisen vom Norden und Erz[a]?
13 Deine Habe und deine Schätze will ich zur Plünderung preisgeben ohne Entschädigung, und das in deinem ganzen Gebiet, und zwar wegen aller deiner Sünden.
14 Und ich werde dafür sorgen, dass sie[b] mit deinen Feinden in ein Land kommen, das du nicht kennst; denn das Feuer, das durch meinen Zorn angezündet worden ist, wird über euch lodern!
15 Herr, du weißt es, so gedenke nun an mich; nimm dich meiner an und räche mich an meinen Verfolgern! Nach deiner Langmut raffe mich nicht hin; bedenke, dass ich um deinetwillen Schmach erleide!
16 Als ich deine Worte fand, da verschlang ich sie;[c] deine Worte sind mir zur Freude und Wonne meines Herzens geworden, denn ich bin ja nach deinem Namen genannt,[d] o Herr, du Gott der Heerscharen!

20 Und ich will dich diesem Volk gegenüber zur festen, ehernen Mauer machen; und sie werden gegen dich kämpfen, aber sie sollen dich nicht überwältigen; denn ich bin bei dir, um dich zu retten und um dich zu befreien, spricht der Herr.
21 Ja, ich werde dich befreien aus der Hand der Bösen und dich erlösen aus der Faust der Gewalttätigen!

The Lord Will Not Relent
15 Then the Lord said to me, (A)“Even if (B)Moses and (C)Samuel stood before Me, My [a]mind would not be favorable toward this people. Cast them out of My sight, and let them go forth. 2 And it shall be, if they say to you, ‘Where should we go?’ then you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord:
(D)“Such as are for death, to death;
And such as are for the sword, to the sword;
And such as are for the famine, to the famine;
And such as are for the (E)captivity, to the captivity.” ’
3 “And I will (F)appoint over them four forms of destruction,” says the Lord: “the sword to slay, the dogs to drag, (G)the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy. 4 I will hand them over to (H)trouble, to all kingdoms of the earth, because of (I)Manasseh the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.
5 “For who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem?
Or who will bemoan you?
Or who will turn aside to ask how you are doing?
6 (J)You have forsaken Me,” says the Lord,
“You have (K)gone backward.
Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you;
(L)I am [b]weary of relenting!
7 And I will winnow them with a winnowing fan in the gates of the land;
I will (M)bereave them of children;
I will destroy My people,
Since they (N)do not return from their ways.
8 Their widows will be increased to Me more than the sand of the seas;
I will bring against them,
Against the mother of the young men,
A plunderer at noonday;
I will cause anguish and terror to fall on them (O)suddenly.
9 “She(P) languishes who has borne seven;
She has breathed her last;
(Q)Her sun has gone down
While it was yet day;
She has been ashamed and confounded.
And the remnant of them I will deliver to the sword
Before their enemies,” says the Lord.
Jeremiah’s Dejection
10 (R)Woe is me, my mother,
That you have borne me,
A man of strife and a man of contention to the whole [c]earth!
I have neither lent for interest,
Nor have men lent to me for interest.
Every one of them curses me.
11 The Lord said:
“Surely it will be well with your remnant;
Surely I will cause (S)the enemy to intercede with you
In the time of adversity and in the time of affliction.
12 Can anyone break iron,
The northern iron and the bronze?
13 Your wealth and your treasures
I will give as (T)plunder without price,
Because of all your sins,
Throughout your territories.
14 And I will [d]make you cross over with your enemies
(U)Into a land which you do not know;
For a (V)fire is kindled in My anger,
Which shall burn upon you.”
15 O Lord, (W)You know;
Remember me and [e]visit me,
And (X)take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
In Your enduring patience, do not take me away.
Know that (Y)for Your sake I have suffered rebuke.
16 Your words were found, and I (Z)ate them,
And (AA)Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart;
For I am called by Your name,
O Lord God of hosts.
17 (AB)I did not sit in the assembly of the mockers,
Nor did I rejoice;
I sat alone because of Your hand,
For You have filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my (AC)pain perpetual
And my wound incurable,
Which refuses to be healed?
Will You surely be to me (AD)like an unreliable stream,
As waters that [f]fail?
The Lord Reassures Jeremiah
19 Therefore thus says the Lord:
(AE)“If you return,
Then I will bring you back;
You shall (AF)stand before Me;
If you (AG)take out the precious from the vile,
You shall be as My mouth.
Let them return to you,
But you must not return to them.
20 And I will make you to this people a fortified bronze (AH)wall;
And they will fight against you,
But (AI)they shall not prevail against you;
For I am with you to save you
And deliver you,” says the Lord.
21 “I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked,
And I will redeem you from the grip of the terrible.”

Trouble will come to the people of Judah
15 The Lord said to me, ‘Even if Moses and Samuel asked me not to punish these people, I would not agree. I still would not help them. Send them away! I do not want to see them again! 2 They may ask you, “Where should we go?” Then tell them, “This is what the Lord says:
Those who should become ill and die will die.
Those who should die in war will die in war.
Those who should die from famine will die from famine.
Those who should go away as prisoners will go away as prisoners.”
3 I will send four kinds of punishments to hurt them. Soldiers will kill them in war. Dogs will carry away their dead bodies. Birds and wild animals will eat them and destroy them. 4 I will cause the people of all nations to think that the people of Judah are disgusting. That will be because of the evil things that the king of Judah, Hezekiah's son, Manasseh, did in Jerusalem.’
5 The Lord said,
‘People of Jerusalem, nobody will feel sorry for you.
Nobody will weep for you.
Nobody will stop to ask how you are.
6 I tell you this:
You have turned away from me.
You continue to go further away from me.
So I will prepare to use my power to destroy you.
I can no longer be kind to you.
7 I will punish the people of every town in the land.
I will blow them away,
like wind blows away straw.
My people have refused to change the way that they live.
So I will destroy them and their children too.
8 There will be more widows in Judah,
than there is sand on the shore of the sea.
At midday I will send an enemy to destroy the young men.
Their mothers will weep for them.
It will happen very suddenly.
Fear and terror will come!
9 A mother will feel very weak,
because all her seven children have died.
It is difficult for her even to breathe.
She has lost the children that made her happy,
while they were still young.
She will be ashamed and without honour.
I will send your enemies to kill
any of your people who are still alive.’
That is what the Lord says.
Jeremiah complains to the Lord
10 ‘This is terrible for me!
I am sorry, mother, that you gave birth to me.
I cause trouble and arguments
wherever I go in the land.
I never lend money to people,
and I do not ask them to lend money to me.
But everyone curses me anyway.’
11 The Lord said,[a]
‘I will take care of you
so that it brings something good for you.
I will cause your enemies to ask you for help.
They will come to you when they are in trouble.
12 Your enemy that comes from the north
is like a weapon made from iron and bronze.
You will never break it.
13 I will give all your valuable things to your enemies.
They will take them all away.
You will receive nothing in return.
That will pay for the sins that you have done
everywhere in your land.
14 Your enemies will make you their slaves
in a land that you do not know.
I will punish you as if in a hot fire,
because I am very angry with you.’
15 ‘Lord, you understand my problems.
Remember me and take care of me.
Please punish those people who hate me.
Do not be so patient with them that they kill me.
Remember that they have insulted me
because I am serving you.
16 As your words came to me,
I took them into me like sweet food.
I belong to you, Lord, God Almighty,
so your words made me very happy.
17 When people were enjoying wild parties,
I did not join with them.
I sat alone, because you held me.
You caused me to be angry with those people.
18 I am in pain which never ends.
People have hurt me and nothing makes it better.
Why are you not there to help me?
You are like a stream that becomes dry
and it has no water.’
19 So the Lord said this to me:
‘If you turn back to me,
I will help you to be strong.
Then you can continue to serve me.
Speak valuable words instead of useless words.
Then you can speak on my behalf.
These people must change to be like you have been.
You must not change to become like them.
20 When these people attack you,
I will make you like a strong wall.
You will be like a wall that is made of bronze.
The people will not be able to knock you down.
I will be with you to protect you.
I will keep you safe.’
That is what the Lord says.
21 ‘I will rescue you from the power of those wicked people.
I will keep you safe from those cruel people.’

“‘Those destined for death, to death;
those for the sword, to the sword;(E)
those for starvation, to starvation;(F)
those for captivity, to captivity.’(G)
3 “I will send four kinds of destroyers(H) against them,” declares the Lord, “the sword(I) to kill and the dogs(J) to drag away and the birds(K) and the wild animals to devour and destroy.(L) 4 I will make them abhorrent(M) to all the kingdoms of the earth(N) because of what Manasseh(O) son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.
5 “Who will have pity(P) on you, Jerusalem?
Who will mourn for you?
Who will stop to ask how you are?
6 You have rejected(Q) me,” declares the Lord.
“You keep on backsliding.
So I will reach out(R) and destroy you;
I am tired of holding back.(S)
7 I will winnow(T) them with a winnowing fork
at the city gates of the land.
I will bring bereavement(U) and destruction on my people,(V)
for they have not changed their ways.(W)
8 I will make their widows(X) more numerous
than the sand of the sea.
At midday I will bring a destroyer(Y)
against the mothers of their young men;
suddenly I will bring down on them
anguish and terror.(Z)
9 The mother of seven will grow faint(AA)
and breathe her last.(AB)
Her sun will set while it is still day;
she will be disgraced(AC) and humiliated.
I will put the survivors to the sword(AD)
before their enemies,”(AE)
declares the Lord.
10 Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,(AF)
a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!(AG)
I have neither lent(AH) nor borrowed,
yet everyone curses(AI) me.
11 The Lord said,
“Surely I will deliver you(AJ) for a good purpose;
surely I will make your enemies plead(AK) with you
in times of disaster and times of distress.
12 “Can a man break iron—
iron from the north(AL)—or bronze?
13 “Your wealth(AM) and your treasures
I will give as plunder,(AN) without charge,(AO)
because of all your sins
throughout your country.(AP)
14 I will enslave you to your enemies
in[a] a land you do not know,(AQ)
for my anger will kindle a fire(AR)
that will burn against you.”
15 Lord, you understand;
remember me and care for me.
Avenge me on my persecutors.(AS)
You are long-suffering(AT)—do not take me away;
think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.(AU)
16 When your words came, I ate(AV) them;
they were my joy and my heart’s delight,(AW)
for I bear your name,(AX)
Lord God Almighty.
17 I never sat(AY) in the company of revelers,
never made merry with them;
I sat alone because your hand(AZ) was on me
and you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unending
and my wound grievous and incurable?(BA)
You are to me like a deceptive brook,
like a spring that fails.(BB)
19 Therefore this is what the Lord says:
“If you repent, I will restore you
that you may serve(BC) me;
if you utter worthy, not worthless, words,
you will be my spokesman.(BD)
Let this people turn to you,
but you must not turn to them.
20 I will make you a wall(BE) to this people,
a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you
but will not overcome(BF) you,
for I am with you
to rescue and save you,”(BG)
declares the Lord.
21 “I will save(BH) you from the hands of the wicked(BI)
and deliver(BJ) you from the grasp of the cruel.”(BK)
