Dios Habla Hoy
Destrucción de Babilonia
51 El Señor dice:
«Voy a enviar un viento destructor
contra Babilonia y los caldeos.
2 Haré que sus enemigos traten a Babilonia
como a trigo que se lanza al aire;
haré que dejen sin habitantes su territorio.
Cuando llegue el día del desastre,
la atacarán por todas partes.
3 ¡Que preparen sus arcos los arqueros!
¡Que se pongan las corazas!
¡No tengan compasión de los jóvenes de Babilonia;
destruyan su ejército por completo!
4 Por todo el país de los caldeos
la gente quedará tendida por las calles,
5 pues aunque Israel y Judá han pecado contra mí
y han llenado de pecado su país,
yo, el Señor todopoderoso,
el Dios Santo de Israel,
aún no los he abandonado.
6 »¡Huyan de Babilonia! ¡Sálvese quien pueda!
¡No mueran por causa del pecado de ella!
Ésta es la hora de mi venganza,
y le pagaré como merece.
7 Babilonia era en mi mano una copa de oro
que embriagaba a todo el mundo.
Las naciones bebían de ese vino
y perdían el sentido.
8 Pero de pronto Babilonia cayó hecha pedazos.
¡Pónganse a llorar por ella!
Traigan remedios para sus heridas,
a ver si se cura.»
9 Ya le pusimos remedios a Babilonia,
pero no se curó.
¡Déjenla! Vámonos de aquí,
cada uno a su patria,
pues su crimen llega hasta el cielo,
se levanta hasta las nubes.
10 El Señor hizo triunfar nuestro derecho.
Vengan, vamos a contar en Sión
lo que ha hecho el Señor nuestro Dios.
11 El Señor quiere destruir Babilonia,
y ha despertado en los reyes de Media
ese mismo sentimiento.
Ésa es la venganza del Señor
por lo que hicieron con su templo.
¡Preparen las flechas! ¡Sujeten los escudos!
12 ¡Den la señal de atacar los muros de Babilonia!
¡Refuercen la guardia!
¡Pongan centinelas!
¡Tiendan emboscadas!
Porque el Señor preparó y llevó a cabo
los planes que había anunciado
contra los habitantes de Babilonia.
13 Tú, Babilonia, que estás junto a grandes ríos
y tienes grandes riquezas,
¡ya te ha llegado tu fin,
el término de tu existencia!
14 El Señor todopoderoso ha jurado por su vida:
«¡Te llenaré de enemigos, como de langostas,
y ellos cantarán victoria sobre ti!»
Himno de alabanza a Dios(A)
15 El Señor, con su poder, hizo la tierra;
con su sabiduría afirmó el mundo;
con su inteligencia extendió el cielo.
16 Con voz de trueno hace rugir el agua en el cielo,
hace subir las nubes desde el extremo de la tierra,
hace brillar los relámpagos en medio de la lluvia
y saca el viento de donde lo tiene guardado.
17 Necio e ignorante es todo hombre.
Los ídolos defraudan al que los fabrica:
son imágenes engañosas y sin vida;
18 son objetos sin valor, ridículos,
que el Señor, en el juicio, destruirá.
19 ¡Qué diferente es el Dios de Jacob,
creador de todo lo que existe!
Él escogió a Israel como su propiedad.
El Señor todopoderoso: ése es su nombre.
Babilonia, instrumento de castigo del Señor
20 «¡Babilonia, tú eres mi mazo,
mi arma de guerra!
Contigo destrozo naciones
y destruyo reinos.
21 Contigo destrozo caballos y jinetes,
carros y cocheros.
22 Contigo destrozo hombres y mujeres,
ancianos y jóvenes,
muchachos y muchachas.
23 Contigo destrozo pastores y rebaños,
labradores y bueyes,
gobernadores y funcionarios.
Castigo de Babilonia
24 »Pero ante los propios ojos de ustedes
pagaré a Babilonia y a todos los caldeos
como merecen, por el mal que hicieron a Sión.
Yo, el Señor lo afirmo.
25 Yo estoy en contra tuya, montaña destructora,
que destruyes toda la tierra.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
Levantaré la mano para castigarte,
te haré rodar desde los peñascos
y te convertiré en un cerro quemado.
26 Ninguna de las piedras de tus ruinas
servirá para construir edificios.
Serás un desierto para siempre.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
27 »¡Den en el país la señal de ataque!
¡Toquen la trompeta y preparen a las naciones
para atacar a Babilonia!
¡Levanten contra ella a los reinos de Ararat,
de Miní y de Asquenaz!
¡Nombren un general que dirija la batalla!
¡Hagan avanzar la caballería como langostas furiosas!
28 Preparen a las naciones para atacarla;
preparen a los reyes de Media,
y a sus gobernadores y funcionarios,
y toda la tierra que dominan.»
29 La tierra tiembla y se estremece,
porque el Señor está cumpliendo sus planes
de convertir Babilonia en un horrible desierto.
30 Los soldados babilonios dejaron de luchar,
se quedaron en sus fortalezas;
sus fuerzas se agotaron,
y hasta parecían mujeres.
Sus ciudades fueron invadidas
y sus casas incendiadas.
31 Uno tras otro corren los mensajeros
a anunciar al rey de Babilonia
que su ciudad fue conquistada por completo.
32 El enemigo ocupó los pasos de los ríos,
incendió los puestos de defensa
y los soldados se llenaron de terror.
33 Porque el Señor todopoderoso,
el Dios de Israel, dice:
«¡Babilonia es como una era
pisoteada en el tiempo de la trilla,
y muy pronto va a llegarle el tiempo de la cosecha!»
34-35 Dice Jerusalén, la ciudad de Sión:
«Nabucodonosor, el rey de Babilonia,
me hizo pedazos y me devoró;
me dejó como un plato vacío.
Como un monstruo del mar, me tragó;
se llenó con lo que más le gustó de mí,
y el resto lo tiró.
¡Que pague Babilonia por la violencia que me hizo!
¡Que paguen los caldeos por la gente que me mataron!»
Promesa a Israel
36 El Señor dice:
«Yo te voy a hacer justicia,
me voy a vengar de tus enemigos.
Voy a dejar completamente secos
el río y los manantiales de Babilonia,
37 que quedará convertida en un montón de ruinas,
en guarida de chacales,
en un lugar inhabitable
que a todos causará espanto y horror.
38 Todos ellos rugirán como leones
y gruñirán como cachorros.
39 Cuando ardan de calor, yo les daré a beber
bebidas que los embriaguen
y les hagan perder el sentido.
Así caerán en un sueño eterno
del que no despertarán.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
40 Luego los llevaré al matadero,
como se lleva a los corderos, chivos y carneros.»
Caída de Babilonia
41 ¡Babilonia, la ciudad famosa en todo el mundo,
ha caído, ha sido conquistada!
¡Cómo se espantan las naciones al verla!
42 El mar inundó Babilonia,
la cubrió con sus grandes olas.
43 Sus ciudades se convirtieron en horrible desierto,
en tierra seca y desolada,
donde nadie vive,
por donde nadie pasa.
44 «Castigaré al dios Bel en Babilonia,
le haré vomitar lo que se había tragado,
y no volverán las naciones a acudir a él.
¡Ya cayeron las murallas de Babilonia!
45 Pueblo mío, sal de ahí,
¡y que cada cual salve su vida
de mi ardiente ira!
46 No se asusten, no tengan miedo
por los rumores que corren en el país.
Cada año correrán rumores diferentes,
rumores de violencia en el país
y de luchas entre gobernantes.
47 Así pues, vendrá el día
en que castigaré a los ídolos de Babilonia.
Todo el país quedará humillado
y cubierto de cadáveres.
48 El cielo y la tierra y todo lo que existe
se alegrarán cuando caiga Babilonia,
cuando vengan del norte sus destructores.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
49 Sí, Babilonia ha de caer
por los muertos que le causó a Israel
y por los muertos que causó en todo el mundo.»
Mensaje a los judíos que están en Babilonia
50 Ustedes, los que escaparon de la matanza,
huyan sin parar,
y aun cuando estén lejos, piensen en el Señor
y acuérdense de Jerusalén.
51 Ustedes dicen: «Sentimos vergüenza
al oír cómo nos insultan.
La deshonra cubre nuestros rostros,
porque gente extranjera ha entrado
hasta los sitios más santos del templo.»
52 Pero el Señor afirma:
«Viene el día
en que castigaré a los ídolos de Babilonia,
y en todo su territorio gemirán los heridos.
53 Y aunque Babilonia suba hasta el cielo
para poner bien alta su fortaleza,
aun allí le enviaré enemigos que la destruyan.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.»
Destrucción de Babilonia
54 Desde Babilonia llegan gritos de dolor,
desde el país de los caldeos llega un gran ruido.
55 Es el Señor, que destruye a Babilonia
y pone fin a su bullicio.
Los enemigos, como olas rugientes,
caerán sobre ella con gran estruendo.
56 Vinieron a destruir Babilonia;
ya capturaron a sus guerreros
y les hicieron pedazos sus arcos.
Porque el Señor es un Dios
que a cada cual le da lo que merece.
57 El Rey, el Señor todopoderoso, afirma:
«Emborracharé a los jefes de Babilonia,
a sus sabios y gobernadores,
y a sus funcionarios y soldados,
y caerán en un sueño eterno
del que no despertarán.
58 Yo, el Señor todopoderoso, digo:
Las anchas murallas de Babilonia
serán derribadas por completo,
y sus enormes puertas serán incendiadas.
Inútilmente habrán trabajado las naciones,
pues sus fatigas terminarán en el fuego.»
Llevan a Babilonia el mensaje de Jeremías
59 En el año cuarto del gobierno de Sedequías, rey de Judá, el profeta Jeremías dio un encargo a Seraías, hijo de Nerías y nieto de Maaseías. Seraías acompañaba al rey Sedequías en su viaje a Babilonia, como encargado de arreglar el hospedaje del rey. 60 Jeremías había escrito en un libro su mensaje acerca de todas las calamidades que habrían de venir sobre Babilonia, es decir, todo lo escrito acerca de ella, 61 y le dijo a Seraías: «Cuando llegues a Babilonia, ten cuidado de leer todo este mensaje. 62 Luego dirás: “Señor, tú has dicho que destruirás este lugar, de manera que nadie vuelva a vivir aquí, ni hombres ni animales, porque lo vas a convertir en un desierto para siempre.” 63 Y luego que termines de leer este libro, átale una piedra y échalo al río Éufrates, 64 y di: “Así se hundirá Babilonia, y no se volverá a levantar del desastre que el Señor le va a enviar.”»

contra Babilonia, ese pueblo rebelde.
2 Mandaré contra ella naciones enteras
para que la lancen al viento,
la destruyan y la dejen vacía.
El día que sea destruida,
la atacarán por todos lados.
3 »Los soldados babilonios
ya están preparando sus armas,
pero ustedes ni siquiera deben dejar
que se pongan la armadura.
Al contrario, ¡maten a sus jóvenes!,
¡quítenles la vida a sus soldados!
4 ¡Que sus cadáveres queden tendidos
por las calles de Babilonia!
5 »Todos en Israel y en Judá
son culpables delante de mí,

fue derrotada y quedó destruida.

pero no lo consiguieron.
Eran tantos sus pecados
que llegaban hasta el cielo,
¡más allá de las nubes!
10 »Los israelitas dicen:
“¡Nuestro Dios nos ha hecho justicia!
¡Vayamos y contemos en Jerusalén
lo que Dios ha hecho por nosotros!”
11 »Y yo digo:
“Ustedes, reyes del país de Media,
sáquenle punta a sus flechas
y tengan listos sus escudos,
pues quiero que destruyan a Babilonia.
Los babilonios destruyeron mi templo;
por eso quiero vengarme de ellos.
12 ”¡Den la señal de ataque
y derriben los muros de Babilonia!
¡Vigilen de cerca a los babilonios
y háganlos caer en la trampa!
Yo soy el Dios de Israel
y cumpliré mis planes contra ellos”.
13 »Ustedes los babilonios
viven junto a los ríos
y gozan de grandes riquezas;
¡pero ya les llegó la hora de morir!
14 Voy a enviarles muchos enemigos
que cantarán victoria sobre ustedes.
Yo soy el Dios todopoderoso
y les juro que así lo haré».
Canción de alabanza a Dios
15 «Con su poder y sabiduría,
y con mucha inteligencia,
Dios hizo la tierra, afirmó el mundo
y extendió los cielos.
16 »Basta con que Dios hable
para que rujan los cielos
y aparezcan las nubes en el horizonte.
En medio de fuertes relámpagos
y de vientos huracanados
Dios hace que llueva.
17 »La gente es estúpida, no sabe nada;
los ídolos son una vergüenza
para quienes los fabrican.
Esas imágenes son un engaño;
por supuesto, no tienen vida.
18 No valen nada, son pura fantasía;
cuando Dios las juzgue, serán destruidas.
19 Pero nuestro Dios no es así;
¡él hizo todo lo que existe!
Nuestro Dios nos eligió
y nos hizo su pueblo.
¡Su nombre es el Dios todopoderoso!»
Mi arma de guerra
20 Dios también me dijo:
«Babilonia, tú eres mi arma de guerra.
Contigo destruyo naciones y reinos,
21 contigo destruyo jinetes y caballos,
contigo destruyo carros de guerra.
22 Contigo destruyo hombres y mujeres,
contigo destruyo jóvenes y ancianos,
contigo destruyo muchachos y muchachas.
23 Contigo destruyo ejércitos y generales,
contigo destruyo campesinos y bueyes,
contigo destruyo jefes y gobernantes.
Castigo final de Babilonia
24 »Ustedes, gente de Judá, verán con sus propios ojos cómo voy a castigar a Babilonia y a todos los que viven allí. Los castigaré por todo el daño que le hicieron a Jerusalén. Les juro que así lo haré.
25 »A ti, Babilonia, te dicen “máquina de la destrucción” porque con tu poder destruyes la tierra. Pero yo voy a lanzarme contra ti. Te agarraré entre mis manos y te haré rodar por el precipicio; ¡te convertiré en una máquina inservible! 26 Nunca más tus piedras se usarán para construir, ni para poner los cimientos de casas y edificios. Tu territorio quedará vacío para siempre. Te juro que así será».
Destrucción de Babilonia
27 Dios también me dijo:
«¡Que agiten las naciones su bandera
contra la tierra de Babilonia!
¡Que suene el toque de trompeta,
y que ataquen a Babilonia
los reinos de Ararat, Miní y Askenaz!
¡Que nombren a un general,
y que ataque la caballería!
28 ¡Llamen a los reyes del país de Media,
y a sus gobernadores y oficiales!
¡Llamen a todo el imperio de Media!
¡Llamen a todas las naciones!
¡Que vengan y ataquen a Babilonia!
29 »Los babilonios se retuercen de dolor
porque he decidido llevar a cabo
mis planes contra su país.
¡Voy a destruirlos por completo,
y nadie quedará con vida!
30 »Los soldados de Babilonia
ya no tienen valor para luchar.
Débiles y llenos de miedo,
se han refugiado en sus torres;
mientras tanto, el enemigo
quema casas y derriba puertas.
31-32 Un mensajero tras otro
llega y da al rey la noticia:
“¡Ha caído la ciudad de Babilonia!
El enemigo controla los puentes,
los cañaverales están en llamas,
y todos los soldados babilonios
están temblando de miedo”.
33 »La ciudad de Babilonia
va a quedar tan desierta
como un campo arrasado por el fuego.
¡Llegó la hora de su destrucción!
34 »La gente de Jerusalén se queja
de que el rey de Babilonia
los dejó como un plato vacío.
Dicen que les causó mucho miedo,
que se llevó todas sus riquezas,
que se los tragó como un monstruo
y luego los arrojó a la basura.
35 Ahora me piden que los castigue
por las humillaciones que sufrieron;
¡me piden que paguen con sangre
toda la sangre israelita que derramaron!»
36 Dios le dijo al pueblo de Judá:
«Por todo eso que los babilonios
han hecho con ustedes,
yo los voy a defender,
voy a vengarme de ellos.
Dejaré secos todos sus pozos,
37 y Babilonia quedará en ruinas;
allí vivirán sólo perros salvajes.
Babilonia será un país sin gente,
del que todo el mundo se burlará.
38 »Los babilonios rugen y gruñen
como cachorros de león.
39-40 Cuando tengan hambre,
yo les daré de comer y beber
para que se diviertan y se emborrachen.
Así caerán en un sueño profundo
del que nunca más despertarán;
yo los llevaré al matadero,
como se lleva a los carneros,
a los corderos y a los chivos.
Les juro que así lo haré.
41 »¡La gran ciudad de Babilonia,
a la que todo el mundo admiraba,
ha caído en poder de sus enemigos!
¡Todas las naciones se espantan
al ver cómo ha quedado destruida!
42 »Sus enemigos se levantaron,
como las agitadas olas del mar,
y la inundaron por completo.
43 Sus ciudades han quedado vacías;
nadie vive en ellas,
nadie pasa por allí.

44 »Bel es el dios de Babilonia,
pero yo lo voy a castigar:
¡haré que vomite lo que se comió!
Las naciones ya no vendrán a adorarlo,
y los muros de Babilonia serán derribados.
45-46 »Ustedes, pueblo mío,
no tengan miedo ni se desanimen
por los rumores que se escuchan;
todos los años hay nuevos rumores,
abunda la violencia en el país,
y todos los gobernantes se pelean.
¡Salgan ya de Babilonia,
y pónganse a salvo de mi enojo!
47 »Viene el día en que castigaré
a los dioses de Babilonia.
Todo el país quedará humillado,
y por todas partes habrá cadáveres.
48 Del norte llegarán los ejércitos
que destruirán a Babilonia.
El cielo y la tierra, y todo lo que existe,
entonarán cantos de alegría.
49 Babilonia merece la muerte
por haber matado a tantos israelitas
y a tanta gente de otras naciones.
50 »Ustedes, los de Judá,
que escaparon con vida
cuando Jerusalén fue conquistada,
y ahora viven en lejanas tierras,
¡salgan ya de Babilonia!
Aunque vivan lejos, recuérdenme,
y no se olviden nunca de Jerusalén.
51 »Los extranjeros no respetaron mi santuario.
Por eso ustedes sienten vergüenza,
pues oyen que la gente
los insulta y se burla de ustedes.
52 Pero en un día ya muy cercano
castigaré a los dioses de Babilonia;
¡por todo ese país habrá gritos de dolor!
53 Aunque Babilonia tenga murallas
tan altas como los cielos,
yo voy a enviar un ejército
que derribará esas altas murallas.
Les juro que así lo haré».
54 Dios continuó diciendo:
«¡Escuchen los gritos de terror
que nos llegan desde Babilonia!
¡Babilonia será destruida!
55-57 Se acerca ya un ejército
dispuesto a destruirla.
Sus enemigos rugen como las olas;
por todas partes se escuchan sus gritos.
Los soldados babilonios serán capturados,
y sus armas serán despedazadas.
Haré que se emborrachen
sus jefes y sus sabios,
sus gobernadores y sus oficiales,
y todos sus soldados.
¡Se dormirán, y nunca más despertarán!
Yo dejaré a Babilonia en ruinas,
y pondré fin a sus fiestas.
»Yo soy rey de Israel;
soy el Dios todopoderoso,
y a cada quien le doy su merecido.
Les juro que así lo haré».
58 El Dios de Israel también me dijo:
«Los anchos muros de Babilonia
serán derribados por completo,
y sus majestuosos portones serán quemados.
¡De nada habrá servido tanto esfuerzo
de las naciones y de los pueblos,
pues todo eso acabará en el fuego!»
El rollo de cuero
59-60 Cuando Sedequías tenía cuatro años de reinar en Judá, fue a Babilonia. Con él fue también Seraías, que estaba a cargo de ese viaje. Antes del viaje, yo, Jeremías, le di a Seraías un mensaje. Escribí en un rollo de cuero todas las desgracias que iban a venir sobre Babilonia, 61 luego se lo entregué a Seraías, y le dije:
«En cuanto llegues a Babilonia, deberás leer en voz alta todo lo que aquí dice. 62 Cuando hayas terminado, orarás así a nuestro Dios: “Tú has prometido que vas a destruir este lugar. Has dicho que vas a dejarlo hecho un desierto, y que aquí no podrá vivir ninguna persona ni ningún animal”. 63 Entonces atarás una piedra al rollo, y lo arrojarás al río Éufrates. 64 Luego dirás: “Así como este rollo de cuero se hundió en el río, también Babilonia se hundirá, y nunca más volverá a levantarse. Todos los que viven en Babilonia morirán. Esta ciudad nunca podrá recuperarse del castigo que Dios le va a mandar”».

Jeremiah 51

51 Thus says Yahweh:
“Look, I am going to stir up against Babylon
and against the inhabitants of Leb-qamai a destructive wind.
2 And I will send winnowers to Babylon,
and they will winnow her,
and they will lay waste her land,
for they will be against her from all sides on the day of disaster.
3 Let not him who bends the bow shoot his bow,
and let him not rise high in his body armor.
And you must not spare her young men;
destroy her whole army.
4 And they will fall slain in the land of the Chaldeans,
and pierced through in her streets.
5 For neither Israel nor Judah is a widower from their God,
from Yahweh of hosts,
though their land is full of guilt
against the Holy One of Israel.”
6 Flee from the midst of Babylon and save each one his life.
You must not perish because of her guilt.
For this is the time of vengeance for Yahweh,
he will repay her what is deserved.
7 Babylon was a cup of gold in the hand of Yahweh,
making drunk all the earth.
The nations drank of her wine.
Therefore[a] the nations acted like madmen.
8 Suddenly Babylon has fallen and she is shattered.
Wail over her!
Take balm for her wounds,
perhaps she may be healed.
9 We tried to heal Babylon, and she was not healed.
Forsake her and let us go each one to his country,
for her judgment has reached to the heavens,
and it has been lifted up to the skies.
10 Yahweh has brought forth our vindication.
Come and let us make known in Zion the work of Yahweh our God.
11 Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers!
Yahweh has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes.
Because his plan concerning Babylon is to destroy it,
for that is the vengeance of Yahweh,
the vengeance for his temple.
12 Against the walls of Babylon raise a banner;
post a strong watch,[b] post watchmen, prepare the ambushes,
for Yahweh has both planned as well as performed
what he has spoken concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 O you who live by mighty waters, rich in treasures,
your end has come, the measure of your life.[c]
14 Yahweh of hosts has sworn by himself,
“Surely I will fill you with troops like the creeping locusts,[d]
and they will sing over you a war cry.”
15 He is the one who made the earth by his power,
the one who created the world by his wisdom,
and by his understanding he stretched out the heavens.
16 At the giving of his voice
there is a roar of waters in the heavens,
and he causes the patches of mist
to go up from the end of the earth.
He makes lightning for the rain,
and he brings out the wind from his storehouses.
17 All humankind turns out to be stupid,
without knowledge.
Every goldsmith is put to shame
by the divine image.
For his cast image is a lie,
and there is no breath in them.
18 They are worthless,
a work of mockery.
At the time of their punishment,
they will perish.
19 The portion of Jacob is not like these,
for he is the creator of everything,[e]
and the tribe of his inheritance.
Yahweh of hosts is his name.
20 He says, “You are a war club for me,
a weapon of battle,
and I smash nations with you,
and I destroy kingdoms with you.
21 And I smash the horse with you,
and its rider,
and I smash the chariot with you,
and its rider.
22 And I smash man and woman with you,
and I smash the old man and the boy with you,
and I smash the young man and the young woman with you.
23 And I smash the shepherd and his flock with you,
and I smash the farmer and his team with you,
and I smash the governors and the officials with you.
24 And I will repay Babylon,
and all the inhabitants of Chaldea,
all their wickedness that they have done in Zion
before your eyes,” declares[f] Yahweh.
25 “Look, I am against you,
O mountain of the destruction,” declares[g] Yahweh,
“the one that destroys the whole earth.
And I will stretch out my hand against you,
and I will roll you down from the cliffs,
and I will make you as a mountain burned away.
26 They will not take from you
a stone for a corner,
and a stone for a foundation,
for you will be an everlasting desolation,”[h] declares[i] Yahweh.
27 Raise a banner in the land;
blow a horn among the nations;
prepare for holy war against her;
summon the nations against her,
the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz;
summon against her an official;
bring up horses[j] like bristling creeping locusts.[k]
28 Prepare the nations for holy war against her,
the kings of the Medes,
with their governors and all their officials,
and every land of their dominion.
29 And the land quakes and writhes,
for the plans of Yahweh against Babylon stand,
to make the land of Babylon as a horror,
without[l] inhabitant.
30 The warriors of Babylon have ceased to fight,
they remain in the strongholds,
their power has dried up,
they have become as women.
Her dwelling places are set on fire,
her bars are broken.
31 one runner runs to meet another runner,
and one messenger to meet another messenger,
to tell the king of Babylon that his city has been captured,
from end to end.[m]
32 And the fords have been seized,
and the reed marshes have been burned with fire,
and the soldiers[n] are horrified.
33 For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel,
“The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor
at the time it is trodden down,
just a little while[o]
and the time of the harvest will come for her.”
34 Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon
has devoured me and sucked me dry;
he has made me an empty vessel;
he has swallowed me like the sea monster;
he has filled his belly with my delicacies;
he has rinsed me.
35 “May the violence done to me and to my flesh be on Babylon,”
the inhabitants[p] of Zion will say;
and “My blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,”
Jerusalem will say.
36 Therefore[q] thus says Yahweh,
“Look, I am going to contend your case,
and I will avenge your vengeance,
and I will cause her sea to dry up,
and I will cause her fountain to dry up.
37 And Babylon will become as a heap of stones,
a lair of jackals,
an object of horror, and an object of hissing,
without[r] inhabitants.
38 They will roar together like the young lions,
they will growl like the cubs of lions.
39 At their becoming hot I will set their banquets,
and I will make them drunk,
so that they will fall into a swoon,
and they will sleep an everlasting sleep,[s]
and they will not wake up,” declares[t] Yahweh.
40 “I will bring them down like young rams to slaughter,
like rams and goats.
41 How Sheshach is captured,
and the glory of all the earth is seized!
How Babylon has become as an object of horror
among the nations!
42 The sea has risen over Babylon,
she has been covered by the roar of its waves.
43 Her cities have become as an object of horror,
a dry land and a wilderness,[u]
a land in which no person lives,
nor does a son of humankind pass through it.
44 And I will punish Bel in Babylon,
and I will wrench out from his mouth what he has swallowed.[v]
And the nations will not stream towards him any longer
what’s worse,[w] the wall of Babylon has fallen.
45 Come out from her midst, my people,
and save each one his life
from the burning anger of[x] Yahweh.
46 Now so that you are not fainthearted,[y]
and you are afraid at the rumors[z] that are heard in the land—
and in the year the rumor comes,
and in the year after it the rumor,
and violence is in the land,
with ruler against ruler—
47 therefore[aa] look, days are coming,
and I will punish the images of Babylon,
and all her land will be put to shame,
and all her slain ones will fall in the midst of her.
48 Then the heaven and the earth and all that is in them
will shout for joy over Babylon,
for from the north
the destroyers will come to it,” declares[ab] Yahweh.
49 Babylon must fall not only because of the slain ones of Israel,
but also because of Babylon the slain ones of all the earth have fallen.
50 Survivors of the sword, go!
You must not linger!
Remember Yahweh from far away,
and let Jerusalem come to your mind.[ac]
51 We are ashamed,
for we have heard taunts,[ad]
disgrace covers our faces,
for strangers have come to the holy places of the house of Yahweh.
52 “Therefore[ae] look, days are coming,” declares[af] Yahweh,
“and I will punish her images,
and the fatally wounded will sigh through all her land.
53 Though Babylon goes up to the heavens,
and though she fortifies the high place of her strength,
from me destroyers will come to her,” declares[ag] Yahweh.
54 The sound of a cry for help from Babylon,
and a great collapse from the land of the Chaldeans.
55 For Yahweh is devastating Babylon,
and he obliterates her loud noise[ah] from her.
Their waves roar like mighty waters,
the roar of their voices[ai] resounds.
56 For a destroyer is coming against her, against Babylon,
and her warriors are captured.
Their bows are broken;
for Yahweh is a God of recompense,
certainly he will repay.
57 “And I will make drunk her officials, and her wise men,
her governors, and her officials, and her warriors,
and they will sleep an everlasting sleep,[aj]
and they will not wake up,”
declares[ak] the King, Yahweh of hosts is his name.
58 Thus says Yahweh of hosts:
“The broad walls of Babylon will be utterly demolished,
and her high gates will burn with fire,
and the peoples will labor for nothing,[al]
and the nations for fire,[am]
and they will grow weary.”
The Scroll Concerning Babylon is Thrown into the Euphrates
59 The word that Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah, the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, at his going with Zedekiah, the king of Judah, to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. Now Seraiah was the quartermaster.[an] 60 And Jeremiah wrote all the disasters[ao] that would come on Babylon in one scroll, all these words that are written concerning Babylon. 61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “At your coming to Babylon, then you must see that you read aloud all these words. 62 And you must say, ‘Yahweh, you yourself spoke against this place, to destroy it, so that there will not be in it anything living, from humankind to animals,[ap] for it will be an everlasting desolation.’[aq] 63 And then[ar] when you finish reading aloud this scroll, you must tie a stone on it, and you must throw it into the middle of the Euphrates. 64 And you must say, ‘Babylon will sink, and she will not rise, because of[as] the face of the disasters[at] that I am bringing on her, and they will grow weary.’” Thus far[au] the words of Jeremiah.

51 Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;
2 And will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.
3 Against him that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him that lifteth himself up in his brigandine: and spare ye not her young men; destroy ye utterly all her host.
4 Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streets.
5 For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the Lord of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.
6 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the Lord's vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence.
7 Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.
8 Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.
9 We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.
10 The Lord hath brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the Lord our God.
11 Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the Lord hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple.
12 Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the Lord hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.
14 The Lord of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillers; and they shall lift up a shout against thee.
15 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.
16 When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.
17 Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
18 They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
19 The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: the Lord of hosts is his name.
20 Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;
21 And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider;
22 With thee also will I break in pieces man and woman; and with thee will I break in pieces old and young; and with thee will I break in pieces the young man and the maid;
23 I will also break in pieces with thee the shepherd and his flock; and with thee will I break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee will I break in pieces captains and rulers.
24 And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, saith the Lord.
25 Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the Lord, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.
26 And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but thou shalt be desolate for ever, saith the Lord.
27 Set ye up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz; appoint a captain against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillers.
28 Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Medes, the captains thereof, and all the rulers thereof, and all the land of his dominion.
29 And the land shall tremble and sorrow: for every purpose of the Lord shall be performed against Babylon, to make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant.
30 The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
31 One post shall run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to shew the king of Babylon that his city is taken at one end,
32 And that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are affrighted.
33 For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; The daughter of Babylon is like a threshingfloor, it is time to thresh her: yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come.

39 In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the Lord.
40 I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he goats.
41 How is Sheshach taken! and how is the praise of the whole earth surprised! how is Babylon become an astonishment among the nations!
42 The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof.
43 Her cities are a desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness, a land wherein no man dwelleth, neither doth any son of man pass thereby.
44 And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.
45 My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the Lord.
46 And lest your heart faint, and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land; a rumour shall both come one year, and after that in another year shall come a rumour, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.
47 Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will do judgment upon the graven images of Babylon: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.
48 Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the Lord.
49 As Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the earth.
50 Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember the Lord afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.
51 We are confounded, because we have heard reproach: shame hath covered our faces: for strangers are come into the sanctuaries of the Lord's house.
52 Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will do judgment upon her graven images: and through all her land the wounded shall groan.
53 Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith the Lord.
54 A sound of a cry cometh from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans:
55 Because the Lord hath spoiled Babylon, and destroyed out of her the great voice; when her waves do roar like great waters, a noise of their voice is uttered:
56 Because the spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the Lord God of recompences shall surely requite.
57 And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise men, her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.

60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.
61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words;
62 Then shalt thou say, O Lord, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate for ever.
63 And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates:
64 And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
