Caída de Babilonia
50 Mensaje acerca de Babilonia, país de los caldeos, que el Señor comunicó por medio del profeta Jeremías:
2 «Anuncien esto, denlo a conocer entre las naciones.
Levanten la señal de anuncio; no oculten nada.
Digan: “¡Babilonia fue tomada!
¡El dios Bel quedó en ridículo,
el dios Marduc está lleno de terror!
¡Sus ídolos, sus falsos dioses,
quedaron en ridículo y llenos de terror!”
3 Porque del norte avanza contra ella una nación
que convertirá su país en un desierto.
Nadie, ni hombres ni animales,
volverá a vivir allí,
pues todos se irán huyendo.»

4 El Señor dice: «En aquel tiempo, la gente de Israel y de Judá vendrá llorando a buscarme a mí, el Señor su Dios. 5 Preguntarán por el camino de Sión, y hacia allá irán, diciendo: “Vayamos al Señor, y unámonos con él en una alianza eterna, que no se olvide nunca.”
6 »Mi pueblo era como ovejas perdidas, mal guiadas por sus pastores, que las dejaron perderse en los montes. Iban de un monte al otro, y hasta olvidaron su corral. 7 Sus enemigos, al encontrarlos, los devoraban y decían: “No es culpa nuestra, porque ellos pecaron contra el Señor, su pastizal seguro, la esperanza de sus antepasados.”
8 »¡Huyan de Babilonia, del país de los caldeos!
¡Salgan como guías al frente del rebaño!
9 Pues voy a hacer que un grupo
de poderosos pueblos del norte
ataque al mismo tiempo a Babilonia.
Se alinearán y la conquistarán.
Son guerreros expertos,
que disparan sus flechas sin fallar el tiro.
10 Saquearán a los caldeos;
los saquearán hasta llenarse.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
Caída de Babilonia
11 »Ustedes, caldeos, que saquearon mi pueblo,
¡alégrense y diviértanse!
¡Salten como una novilla en la hierba!
¡Relinchen como caballos!
12 Pero su patria y su ciudad natal
quedarán cubiertas de vergüenza.
Será la última de las naciones,
un desierto seco y desolado.
13 Porque me enojaré y la dejaré sin habitantes,
completamente convertida en un desierto.
Todo el que pase por allí quedará espantado
al ver el castigo que recibió.
14 »¡A sus puestos, arqueros, rodeen Babilonia!
¡Disparen contra ella todas sus flechas,
porque pecó contra mí, contra el Señor!
15 ¡Lancen gritos de guerra por todos lados!
¡Babilonia ya se rinde!
¡Cayeron las torres, se derrumbaron las murallas!
¡Ésta es mi venganza: vénguense de ella!
¡Hagan con ella lo mismo que ella hizo!
16 No dejen en Babilonia a nadie que siembre o recoja las cosechas.
Al ver la guerra destructora,
los extranjeros volverán a su patria,
cada cual huyendo hacia su tierra.

17 »Israel es como una oveja perdida, perseguida por leones. Primero se lo comió el rey de Asiria; después, Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, le royó los huesos. 18 Por eso yo, el Señor todopoderoso, el Dios de Israel, digo: Voy a castigar al rey de Babilonia y a su país, como lo hice con el rey de Asiria. 19 Haré que Israel vuelva a su tierra, y como una oveja tendrá pastos abundantes en el Carmelo, en Basán, en la región montañosa de Efraín y en Galaad. 20 Yo, el Señor, afirmo: En aquel tiempo, Israel y Judá estarán libres de culpas y pecados, porque yo perdonaré a los que deje con vida.

21 »¡Ataquen la región de Merataim
y a los habitantes de Pecod!
¡Persíganlos, destrúyanlos por completo!
¡Cumplan mis órdenes en todo!
Yo, el Señor, lo ordeno.»
22 En el país se oye estruendo de batalla,
de gran destrucción.
23 ¡Babilonia, el martillo del mundo entero,
ha quedado roto, hecho pedazos!
¡Qué horror sienten las naciones
al ver lo que a Babilonia le ha pasado!
24 Tú misma, Babilonia, te tendiste una trampa,
y sin darte cuenta caíste en ella.
Quedaste presa, atrapada,
porque te opusiste al Señor.
25 El Señor abrió el depósito de sus armas
y sacó las armas de su ira,
porque el Señor todopoderoso
tiene una tarea que llevar a cabo
en la nación de los caldeos.
26 ¡Atáquenla por todas partes!
¡Abran sus graneros!
¡Amontonen a la gente y destrúyanla!
¡Que no quede nadie con vida!
27 ¡Maten a todos sus soldados,
envíenlos al matadero!
¡Ay de ellos! ¡Les llegó su día,
la hora de su castigo!
28 (Gente escapada de Babilonia llega a Sión contando cómo el Señor nuestro Dios ha dado su merecido a Babilonia por lo que ella hizo con el templo.)
29 «¡Llamen a todos los arqueros,
para que ataquen a Babilonia!
¡Acampen alrededor de la ciudad
para que nadie escape!
¡Páguenle como merece!
¡Hagan con ella lo mismo que ella hizo!
Porque ha sido insolente conmigo,
con el Señor, el Dios Santo de Israel.
30 Por eso sus jóvenes caerán muertos por las calles
y todos sus guerreros morirán en ese día.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.»
31 El Señor todopoderoso dice:
«Nación insolente, yo estoy en contra tuya;
ha llegado tu día, la hora de castigarte.
32 Nación insolente, tropezarás y caerás,
y nadie te levantará.
Prenderé fuego a todas tus ciudades,
y ese fuego destruirá todos tus contornos.»
33 El Señor todopoderoso dice: «El pueblo de Israel y el pueblo de Judá están sufriendo la opresión. Sus enemigos los tienen presos y no quieren soltarlos. 34 Pero su redentor es fuerte y se llama el Señor todopoderoso. Él se encargará de hacerles justicia; traerá paz al país y terror a los habitantes de Babilonia.»
35 El Señor dice:
«¡Guerra a Babilonia y a sus habitantes!
¡A sus jefes y a sus sabios!
36 ¡Guerra a sus adivinos: que se vuelvan locos!
37 ¡Guerra a sus soldados: que tiemblen de miedo!
¡Guerra a sus caballos y sus carros!
¡Guerra a sus soldados mercenarios:
que se vuelvan como mujeres!
¡Guerra a sus tesoros: que se los roben!
38 ¡Guerra a sus ríos: que se sequen!
Porque Babilonia es un país de ídolos horribles,
y por ellos ha perdido el sentido.
39 »Por eso, en Babilonia harán sus guaridas los gatos monteses y los chacales, y allí vivirán los avestruces. Jamás en todos los siglos venideros volverá a ser habitada. 40 Quedará como Sodoma y Gomorra y las ciudades vecinas, cuando fueron destruidas. Nadie volverá a vivir allí, ni siquiera de paso. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
41 »Desde lejanas tierras del norte,
una nación poderosa y numerosos reyes
se preparan a venir.
42 Están armados de arcos y lanzas;
son crueles, no tienen compasión,
sus gritos son como el estruendo del mar,
y van montados a caballo.
Están listos para la batalla contra Babilonia.
43 El rey de Babilonia, al saber esta noticia,
se ha quedado paralizado de miedo,
y siente angustia y dolor
como mujer de parto.
44 »Vendré repentinamente como un león que sale de los matorrales del Jordán y se lanza a los lugares donde siempre hay pasto fresco, y haré huir de ahí a los de Babilonia, y haré que gobierne la persona que yo escoja. Pues ¿quién puede compararse a mí? ¿Quién puede desafiarme? ¿Qué pastor me puede hacer frente? 45 Escuchen el plan que yo, el Señor, he preparado contra Babilonia; el proyecto que he formulado contra el país de los caldeos: Aun a los corderos más pequeños se los llevarán, y las mismas praderas serán también destrozadas. 46 La caída de Babilonia hará tanto ruido, que la tierra temblará, y sus gritos se oirán en las demás naciones.»

50 Dios me dio este mensaje acerca de Babilonia. Me dijo:
2 «A ti, Jeremías, te encargo
que se anuncie entre las naciones mi mensaje,
para que todos se enteren.
Que se agite la señal de victoria
y se dé a conocer la noticia:
“¡Babilonia será conquistada!
¡El dios Bel quedará en ridículo!
¡El dios Marduc temblará de miedo!
¡Todos los dioses de Babilonia
se asustarán y quedarán humillados!”
3 »Del norte vendrá una nación
que atacará y destruirá a Babilonia.
Hombres y animales saldrán corriendo,
y nadie volverá a vivir allí.
4 »Cuando todo esto suceda,
la gente de Israel y de Judá
vendrá llorando a buscarme,
pues yo soy el Dios de Israel.
5 Preguntarán cómo llegar a Jerusalén,
y hacia allá se dirigirán.
Al llegar, se reunirán conmigo
para que hagamos un pacto eterno,
del cual nunca más se olvidarán.
6 »Mi pueblo ha perdido el rumbo;
ha vivido como un rebaño perdido,
pues sus jefes no supieron dirigirlo.
Por eso anduvo por las montañas,
extraviado y sin rumbo fijo;
¡hasta olvidó su lugar de descanso!
7 Al verlos, sus enemigos se burlaban
y les decían:
“De esto no tenemos la culpa,
pues ustedes pecaron contra Dios;
contra el Dios que todo les daba,
y en quien confiaban sus antepasados”.
8 »Pueblo mío, ¡salgan ya de Babilonia!
¡Escápense de ese país!
¡Corran al frente de los que huyen!
9-10 Yo enviaré contra Babilonia
grandes naciones del norte
que la atacarán, la conquistarán
y se quedarán con todas sus riquezas.
Sus soldados son de lo mejor;
¡sus flechas siempre dan en el blanco!
11 »Y ustedes, babilonios,
que le han robado a mi pueblo,
¡ríanse si quieren, y hagan fiesta,
12 pero su patria quedará humillada
y al final morirá avergonzada
y hecha un desierto solitario!
13 »Yo haré que Babilonia
nunca más vuelva a ser habitada.
Estoy tan enojado con ella
que voy a destruirla.
Todos los que pasen por allí
se asustarán al ver sus ruinas.
14 »Y ustedes, guerreros,
¡prepárense para atacar a Babilonia!
¡Disparen contra ella sus flechas,
porque ha pecado contra mí!
15 Griten por todas partes:
“¡Babilonia se ha rendido!
¡Sus torres se derrumban!

16 ¡Que no quede en ese país
nadie que siembre ni coseche!
»Cuando Babilonia sea atacada
los que fueron llevados prisioneros
huirán de allá y volverán a su país.
17 »Israel es un pueblo que ha vivido perdido como oveja, y siempre en peligro de que se lo devoren los leones. El primero en devorarlo fue el rey de Asiria, y a él le siguió el rey de Babilonia, que lo devoró hasta los huesos. 18 Pero yo soy el Dios de Israel, y así como antes castigué al rey de Asiria, castigaré al rey de Babilonia y a su nación. 19 Yo haré que Israel regrese a su propia tierra, y yo mismo le daré de comer en el monte Carmelo, en la región de Basán y en las montañas de Efraín y Galaad. 20 Cuando llegue ese día, perdonaré a los que aún queden con vida. A Israel y a Judá les perdonaré su maldad.
21 »Y a ustedes, enemigos de Babilonia,
les mando que ataquen y persigan
a estos despreciables babilonios.
22 »Ya se escuchan los gritos de guerra
y el ruido de una gran destrucción.
23 Tú, Babilonia, eras como un martillo
que golpeaba a todo el mundo,

24 Al rebelarte contra mí,

y sacaré las más destructivas.

26 »¡Vengan de todas partes

29 »¡Que vengan los guerreros,
y ataquen a Babilonia!
¡Que la rodeen
para que nadie se escape!
Babilonia se rebeló contra mí.
Por eso, ¡denle su merecido!
¡Trátenla como ella trató a otros!
Yo soy el Dios de Israel,
yo soy un Dios diferente.
30 »Yo les juro que en ese día
sus jóvenes y sus mejores soldados
caerán muertos por las calles.
31-32 »Babilonia, nación orgullosa,
cuando llegue el día de tu castigo,
vendré y te daré tu merecido.
Les prenderé fuego a tus ciudades
y a todos sus alrededores.
Tus habitantes tropezarán y caerán,
y nadie los ayudará a levantarse.
Yo soy el Dios todopoderoso,
yo soy el Dios de Israel,
y les juro que así lo haré.
33 »Ustedes los babilonios
han tratado muy mal
al pueblo de Israel y de Judá.
Los han hecho prisioneros
y no quieren dejarlos libres.
34 Yo soy el Dios todopoderoso,
y con mi poder les daré libertad
y los haré vivir en paz.
Pero a ustedes, los babilonios,
les voy a enviar un gran castigo.
35 »¡Que mueran los babilonios!
¡Que mueran sus jefes y sus sabios!
36 ¡Que todos sus profetas mentirosos
se vuelvan locos y pierdan la vida!
¡Que tiemblen de miedo sus soldados!
37 ¡Que se mueran sus caballos,
y sean destrozados sus carros de guerra!
¡Que todos sus soldados extranjeros
se acobarden y se mueran!
¡Que les roben todos sus tesoros!

38 »Tantos ídolos hay en Babilonia
que la gente ha perdido la razón.
39-40 »Nunca más Babilonia
volverá a ser habitada.
Será como cuando destruí
a Sodoma y a Gomorra,

lechuzas y perros salvajes.

A Message Concerning Babylon
50 The word that Yahweh spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by the hand of Jeremiah the prophet:
2 “Declare among the nations and proclaim,
and lift up a banner.
Proclaim, you must not conceal it.
Say, ‘Babylon is captured,
Bel is ashamed,
Merodach is filled with terror,
her idols are ashamed,
her idols are filled with terror.
3 For a nation will come up against her from the north.
It will make her land as a horror,
and an inhabitant will not be in her.
From humans[a] to animals[b] they all will wander off.
They will go away.
4 In those days and in that time,’” declares[c] Yahweh,
“the people[d] of Israel will come,
they and the people[e] of Judah together.
Weeping as they go,[f] they will go,
and Yahweh their God they will seek.
5 They will ask the way to Zion,
turning their faces there.
They will come and join themselves to Yahweh
by an everlasting covenant[g] that will not be forgotten.
6 My people have become lost sheep,
their shepherds have caused them to go astray.
They led them away to the mountains.
From mountain to hill they have gone,
they have forgotten their resting place.
7 All those who found them have devoured them.
And their foes have said, ‘We are not guilty,
because[h] they have sinned against Yahweh, the true pasture,[i]
even Yahweh, the hope of their ancestors.’[j]
8 Flee from the midst of Babylon,
and from the land of the Chaldeans.
Go out and be like he-goats
before[k] the flock.
9 For look, I am going to stir up,
and I am going to bring against Babylon
a contingent of great nations
from the land of the north.
And they will draw up a battle formation against her,
from there she will be captured.
Their arrows are like a warrior who has achieved success,
he does not return without success.
10 And Chaldea will be as booty,
all those who plunder her will be satisfied,” declares[l] Yahweh.
11 “Though you rejoice, though you exult,
O plunderers of my inheritance,
though you frisk about like a heifer on the grass,
and you neigh like the powerful stallions,
12 your mother will be very ashamed.
She who gave birth to you will be humiliated.[m]
Look, she will be the least of the nations,
a desert,[n] dry land, and wilderness.[o]
13 Because of the anger of Yahweh she will not be inhabited,
but she will be a wasteland, all of her.
Everyone who passes by Babylon will be appalled
and will hiss because of all her wounds.
14 Draw up a battle formation at Babylon all around,
all those who bend the bow, shoot at her.
You must not spare arrows,[p]
for she has sinned against Yahweh.
15 Raise a war cry against her on all sides.
She has surrendered.[q]
Her towers have fallen,
her walls are ruined.
For this is the vengeance of Yahweh.
Take revenge on her.
As she has done to others,
so do to her.
16 Cut off the sower from Babylon,
and the one who uses the sickle in the time of harvest.
Because of[r] the sword of the oppressor
each one will turn to their people,
and each one will flee to their land.
17 Israel is a sheep scattered,
lions drove them away.
The first who devoured it was the king of Assyria,
and now at the end Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, gnawed its bones.”
18 Therefore[s] thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel,
“Look, I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land
just as I punished the king of Assyria.
19 And I will restore Israel to its pasture,
and it will feed on Carmel, and in Bashan,
and on the hills[t] of Ephraim, and in Gilead
its hunger will be satisfied.
20 In those days and at that time,” declares[u] Yahweh,
“the guilt of Israel will be sought, but there is none,
and the sins of Judah, but they will not be found,
for I will forgive those I left behind.
21 To the land of Merathaim,
go up against her,
and against the inhabitants of Pekod,
massacre and destroy them,” declares[v] Yahweh,
“and do according to all that I have commanded you.
22 The sound of battle is in the land,
and great destruction.
23 How the blacksmith’s hammer of all the earth is cut down and broken!
How Babylon has become as a horror among the nations!
24 I laid a bird snare for you, and you were caught, O Babylon.
But you yourself did not know.
You were discovered and seized,
because with Yahweh you measured yourself.
25 Yahweh has opened his armory,
and he has brought out the weapons of his wrath,
for it is a word for my Lord Yahweh of hosts
in the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come against her from the end,
open her granaries.
Pile her up like heaps and destroy her.
Let there be no remnant for her.
27 Massacre all her bulls,
let them go down to the slaughtering.
Woe to them, for their day has come,
the time of their punishment.
28 There is the sound of fugitives and survivors
from the land of Babylon,
to declare in Zion the vengeance of Yahweh our God,
the vengeance for his temple.
29 Summon archers against Babylon,
all those who bend the bow.
Encamp all around her,
there must not be for her an escape.
Take revenge on her according to her deeds.
According to all that she has done, so do to her.
For against Yahweh she has behaved insolently,
against the Holy One of Israel.
30 Therefore[w] her young men will fall in her public squares,
and all her soldiers[x] will perish on that day,” declares[y] Yahweh.
31 “Look, I am against you, O arrogant one,”
declares[z] Lord Yahweh of hosts,
“for your day has come,
the time when I will punish you.
32 And the arrogant one will stumble and fall,
and there is no one who raises him up.
And I will kindle a fire in his cities,
and it will devour everything around him.”
33 Thus says Yahweh of hosts:
“The people[aa] of Israel are oppressed,
and the people[ab] of Judah likewise,
for[ac] all their captors have seized them,
they refuse to let them go free.
34 Their redeemer is strong,
his name is Yahweh of hosts.
Surely he will plead their case,
in order to make peace for the earth,
but to cause unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.
35 A sword against the Chaldeans,” declares[ad] Yahweh,
“and against the inhabitants of Babylon,
and against her officials,
and against her wise men.
36 A sword against the oracle priests,
and they will become foolish.
A sword against her warriors,
and they will be filled with terror.
37 A sword against his horses,
and against his chariots,[ae]
and against all the foreign troops who are in the midst of her,
so that they may become as women.
A sword against her treasures,
so that they may be plundered.
38 A drought will come against her waters,
and they will dry up,
for it is a land of images,
and because of the frightful objects, they act like madmen.
39 Therefore[af] desert creatures will live there[ag] with jackals,
and daughters of ostriches[ah] will inhabit her.
And she will not be inhabited again forever,[ai]
and she will not be dwelt in for all generations.[aj]
40 As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah
and their neighbors,” declares[ak] Yahweh,
“no one will live there,
and the son of humankind will not dwell as an alien in her.
41 Look, a people is about to come
from the north,
and a great nation and many kings are woken up
from the remotest part of the earth.
42 They keep hold of bow and short sword.
They are cruel and they have no mercy.
Their sound is like the sea, it roars,
and upon horses they ride.
Drawn up for battle as a man for the battle,
against you, O daughter of Babylon.
43 The king of Babylon heard their report
and his hands grew slack.
Anxiety has seized him,
fear and pain like the woman who gives birth.
44 Look, like a lion he comes up from the thickets[al] of the Jordan
against a pastureland by a constantly flowing stream,[am]
so I will chase them away quickly[an] from her,
and I will appoint whoever is chosen over her.
For who is like me, and who can summon me,
and who is this shepherd who can stand before me?[ao]
45 Therefore[ap] hear the plan of Yahweh
that he has planned against Babylon,
and his plans
that he has planned against the land of the Chaldeans.
Surely[aq] they will drag them away,
the little ones of the flock.
Surely[ar] he will cause their grazing place
to be desolate over them.
46 At the sound, ‘Babylon has been captured,’
the earth will quake,
and a cry for help among the nations
will be heard.”

A Message About Babylon(A)
50 This is the word the Lord spoke through Jeremiah the prophet concerning Babylon(B) and the land of the Babylonians[a]:
2 “Announce and proclaim(C) among the nations,
lift up a banner(D) and proclaim it;
keep nothing back, but say,
‘Babylon will be captured;(E)
Bel(F) will be put to shame,(G)
Marduk(H) filled with terror.
Her images will be put to shame
and her idols(I) filled with terror.’
3 A nation from the north(J) will attack her
and lay waste her land.
No one will live(K) in it;
both people and animals(L) will flee away.
4 “In those days, at that time,”
declares the Lord,
“the people of Israel and the people of Judah together(M)
will go in tears(N) to seek(O) the Lord their God.
5 They will ask the way(P) to Zion
and turn their faces toward it.
They will come(Q) and bind themselves to the Lord
in an everlasting covenant(R)
that will not be forgotten.
6 “My people have been lost sheep;(S)
their shepherds(T) have led them astray(U)
and caused them to roam on the mountains.
They wandered over mountain and hill(V)
and forgot their own resting place.(W)
7 Whoever found them devoured(X) them;
their enemies said, ‘We are not guilty,(Y)
for they sinned against the Lord, their verdant pasture,
the Lord, the hope(Z) of their ancestors.’
8 “Flee(AA) out of Babylon;(AB)
leave the land of the Babylonians,
and be like the goats that lead the flock.
9 For I will stir(AC) up and bring against Babylon
an alliance of great nations(AD) from the land of the north.(AE)
They will take up their positions against her,
and from the north she will be captured.(AF)
Their arrows(AG) will be like skilled warriors
who do not return empty-handed.
10 So Babylonia[b] will be plundered;(AH)
all who plunder her will have their fill,”
declares the Lord.
11 “Because you rejoice and are glad,
you who pillage my inheritance,(AI)
because you frolic like a heifer(AJ) threshing grain
and neigh like stallions,
12 your mother will be greatly ashamed;
she who gave you birth will be disgraced.(AK)
She will be the least of the nations—
a wilderness, a dry land, a desert.(AL)
13 Because of the Lord’s anger she will not be inhabited
but will be completely desolate.(AM)
All who pass Babylon will be appalled;(AN)
they will scoff(AO) because of all her wounds.(AP)
14 “Take up your positions around Babylon,
all you who draw the bow.(AQ)
Shoot at her! Spare no arrows,(AR)
for she has sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout(AS) against her on every side!
She surrenders, her towers fall,
her walls(AT) are torn down.
Since this is the vengeance(AU) of the Lord,
take vengeance on her;
do to her(AV) as she has done to others.(AW)
16 Cut off from Babylon the sower,
and the reaper with his sickle at harvest.
Because of the sword(AX) of the oppressor
let everyone return to their own people,(AY)
let everyone flee to their own land.(AZ)
17 “Israel is a scattered flock(BA)
that lions(BB) have chased away.
The first to devour(BC) them
was the king(BD) of Assyria;
the last to crush their bones(BE)
was Nebuchadnezzar(BF) king(BG) of Babylon.”
18 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
“I will punish the king of Babylon and his land
as I punished the king(BH) of Assyria.(BI)
19 But I will bring(BJ) Israel back to their own pasture,
and they will graze on Carmel and Bashan;
their appetite will be satisfied(BK)
on the hills(BL) of Ephraim and Gilead.(BM)
20 In those days, at that time,”
declares the Lord,
“search will be made for Israel’s guilt,
but there will be none,(BN)
and for the sins(BO) of Judah,
but none will be found,
for I will forgive(BP) the remnant(BQ) I spare.
21 “Attack the land of Merathaim
and those who live in Pekod.(BR)
Pursue, kill and completely destroy[c] them,”
declares the Lord.
“Do everything I have commanded you.
22 The noise(BS) of battle is in the land,
the noise of great destruction!
23 How broken and shattered
is the hammer(BT) of the whole earth!(BU)
How desolate(BV) is Babylon
among the nations!
24 I set a trap(BW) for you, Babylon,
and you were caught before you knew it;
you were found and captured(BX)
because you opposed(BY) the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his arsenal
and brought out the weapons(BZ) of his wrath,
for the Sovereign Lord Almighty has work to do
in the land of the Babylonians.(CA)
26 Come against her from afar.(CB)
Break open her granaries;
pile her up like heaps of grain.(CC)
Completely destroy(CD) her
and leave her no remnant.
27 Kill all her young bulls;(CE)
let them go down to the slaughter!(CF)
Woe to them! For their day(CG) has come,
the time(CH) for them to be punished.
28 Listen to the fugitives(CI) and refugees from Babylon
declaring in Zion(CJ)
how the Lord our God has taken vengeance,(CK)
vengeance for his temple.(CL)
29 “Summon archers against Babylon,
all those who draw the bow.(CM)
Encamp all around her;
let no one escape.(CN)
Repay(CO) her for her deeds;(CP)
do to her as she has done.
For she has defied(CQ) the Lord,
the Holy One(CR) of Israel.
30 Therefore, her young men(CS) will fall in the streets;
all her soldiers will be silenced in that day,”
declares the Lord.
31 “See, I am against(CT) you, you arrogant one,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
“for your day(CU) has come,
the time for you to be punished.
32 The arrogant(CV) one will stumble and fall(CW)
and no one will help her up;(CX)
I will kindle a fire(CY) in her towns
that will consume all who are around her.”
33 This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“The people of Israel are oppressed,(CZ)
and the people of Judah as well.
All their captors hold them fast,
refusing to let them go.(DA)
34 Yet their Redeemer(DB) is strong;
the Lord Almighty(DC) is his name.
He will vigorously defend their cause(DD)
so that he may bring rest(DE) to their land,
but unrest to those who live in Babylon.
35 “A sword(DF) against the Babylonians!”(DG)
declares the Lord—
“against those who live in Babylon
and against her officials and wise(DH) men!
36 A sword against her false prophets!
They will become fools.
A sword against her warriors!(DI)
They will be filled with terror.(DJ)
37 A sword against her horses and chariots(DK)
and all the foreigners in her ranks!
They will become weaklings.(DL)
A sword against her treasures!(DM)
They will be plundered.
38 A drought on[d] her waters!(DN)
They will dry(DO) up.
For it is a land of idols,(DP)
idols that will go mad with terror.
39 “So desert creatures(DQ) and hyenas will live there,
and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
or lived in from generation to generation.(DR)
40 As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah(DS)
along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
no people will dwell in it.(DT)
41 “Look! An army is coming from the north;(DU)
a great nation and many kings
are being stirred(DV) up from the ends of the earth.(DW)
42 They are armed with bows(DX) and spears;
they are cruel(DY) and without mercy.(DZ)
They sound like the roaring sea(EA)
as they ride on their horses;
they come like men in battle formation
to attack you, Daughter Babylon.(EB)
43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,
and his hands hang limp.(EC)
Anguish has gripped him,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(ED)
44 Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets(EE)
to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant.
Who is the chosen(EF) one I will appoint for this?
Who is like me and who can challenge me?(EG)
And what shepherd can stand against me?”
45 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Babylon,
what he has purposed(EH) against the land of the Babylonians:(EI)
The young of the flock will be dragged away;
their pasture will be appalled at their fate.
46 At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble;(EJ)
its cry(EK) will resound among the nations.

50 The word that the Lord spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet.
2 Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.
3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.
4 In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the Lord their God.
5 They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the Lord in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten.
6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace.
7 All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, even the Lord, the hope of their fathers.
8 Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks.
9 For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain.
10 And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the Lord.
11 Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls;
12 Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.
13 Because of the wrath of the Lord it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues.
14 Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the Lord: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her.
16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.
17 Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.
18 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria.
19 And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead.
20 In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.
21 Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the Lord, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.
22 A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.
23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!
24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the Lord.
25 The Lord hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of the Lord God of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left.
27 Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation.
28 The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, the vengeance of his temple.
29 Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel.
30 Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the Lord.
31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord God of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee.
32 And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.
33 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go.
34 Their Redeemer is strong; the Lord of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.
35 A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the Lord, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.
36 A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.
37 A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed.
38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.
39 Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.
40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.
41 Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
42 They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.
43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.
44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?
45 Therefore hear ye the counsel of the Lord, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them.
46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.
