Impiedad de Jerusalén y de Judá
5 Recorran ahora las calles de Jerusalén, y miren e infórmense. Busquen en sus plazas, a ver si encuentran alguien, uno solo, que haga justicia y que busque verdad. Entonces yo la perdonaré. 2 Aun cuando digan: «Vive el Señor», sus juramentos son falsos.
3 ¡Ah, Señor! ¿Acaso tus ojos no se fijan en la verdad? Los castigaste, pero no les dolió; acabaste con ellos, pero no quisieron ser corregidos; endurecieron su semblante más que la roca, ¡y no quisieron volverse a ti!
4 Yo pensaba: «A decir verdad, éstos son unos pobres locos, que no conocen el camino del Señor ni la justicia de su Dios. 5 Voy a ir a hablar con la gente importante, porque ellos sí conocen el camino del Señor y la justicia de su Dios.» ¡Pero ellos también rompieron el yugo y reventaron las coyundas!
6 Por lo tanto, el león de la selva los matará; el lobo del desierto los destruirá; el leopardo acechará sus ciudades, y cualquiera que salga de ellas será arrebatado. Porque sus pecados se han multiplicado, y su falta de lealtad se ha agravado.
7 «¿Cómo voy a perdonarte por esto? Tus hijos me abandonaron, y juraron por dioses que no son dioses. Yo les di abundancia, pero ellos me fueron infieles, y en grupo se pasaban el tiempo en casa de prostitutas. 8 Como caballos sementales, relinchaban de deseos por la mujer de su prójimo. 9 ¿Acaso no tenía yo que castigar esto? ¿Acaso no tenía yo que vengarme de una nación así?»
—Palabra del Señor.
10 «¡Entren a sus viñedos y destrúyanlos, pero no del todo! ¡Destrocen las ramas de sus viñas, porque no son mías! 11 ¡Con gran desfachatez se rebelaron contra mí la casa de Israel y la casa de Judá!»
—Palabra del Señor.
12 Ellos negaron al Señor, y dijeron:
«Él no es Dios. ¡No va a pasarnos nada! ¡Nada sabremos de guerras ni de hambre! 13 Los profetas son como el viento; no hay en ellos palabra, y les va a suceder lo que ellos anuncian.»
14 Por lo tanto, así ha dicho el Señor, el Dios de los ejércitos:
«Puesto que ellos han hablado así, yo pondré mis palabras en tu boca; y ellas serán el fuego, y este pueblo será la leña, y el fuego los consumirá. 15 Casa de Israel, yo voy a hacer que venga contra ustedes un pueblo cuya lengua no conocen, así que no entenderán lo que diga. Es un pueblo ancestral y distante, de gente robusta.
—Palabra del Señor.
16 »Todos ellos son probados guerreros, y su aljaba es como un sepulcro abierto. 17 Acabarán con todo lo que es tuyo: con tu trigo y tu pan, con tus ovejas y tus vacas, con tus viñas y tus higueras, y hasta con tus hijos y tus hijas. ¡A punta de espada reducirá a la nada las ciudades fortificadas en que tú confías! 18 Sin embargo, cuando llegue ese día no los destruiré por completo.
—Palabra del Señor.
19 »Y cuando ellos digan: “¿Por qué el Señor nuestro Dios nos hizo todo esto?”, entonces les dirás de mi parte: “Así como ustedes me dejaron a mí, para servir a dioses ajenos en su propia tierra, así también servirán a gente extraña en tierra ajena.”
20 »Anuncien esto en la casa de Jacob; dejen que esto se oiga en Judá, y digan: 21 “Ahora escucha esto, pueblo necio y sin corazón, que tiene ojos y no ve, que tiene oídos y no oye:(A) 22 ¿No van a tener temor de mí? ¿No van a temblar en mi presencia? ¿Ante mí, que con arena le puse límites al mar? Ésta es una ley permanente, que no se puede quebrantar. Aunque se levanten tempestades, no podrán rebasar esos límites; aunque bramen las olas, no pasarán de allí.”(B)

23 »Pero éste es un pueblo que tiene un corazón falso y rebelde. Se apartaron y se fueron. 24 Jamás se pusieron a pensar: “Mostremos ya temor del Señor, nuestro Dios, que a su tiempo nos da la lluvia temprana y la tardía, y que nos respeta los tiempos establecidos para la siega.” 25 ¡Con sus iniquidades han impedido todo esto! ¡Con sus pecados han apartado de ustedes el bien! 26 Entre mi pueblo se ha encontrado gente impía, que a semejanza de los que ponen trampas para los pájaros, se ponen al acecho para atrapar a sus semejantes. 27 Sus casas parecen jaulas llenas de pájaros, pero están llenas de engaño. ¡Fue así como se hicieron grandes y ricos! 28 ¡Tanto engordaron que hasta la piel les brilla! ¡Rebasaron la maldad de los malvados! ¡No le hicieron justicia a los huérfanos ni a los pobres! Y, a pesar de todo, prosperaron. 29 ¿Y yo no habré de castigar esto? ¿Y no habré de vengarme de gente así?
—Palabra del Señor.
30 »Algo feo y espantoso ha ocurrido en la tierra: 31 Los profetas anuncian mentiras, y los sacerdotes dirigen por su propia autoridad. ¡Pero mi pueblo así lo ha querido! ¿Y qué van a hacer cuando les llegue el fin?

5 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.
2 And though they say, The Lord liveth; surely they swear falsely.
3 O Lord, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the Lord, nor the judgment of their God.
5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the Lord, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.
6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.
7 How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses.
8 They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.
9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the Lord's.
11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the Lord.
12 They have belied the Lord, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.
14 Wherefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the Lord: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.
16 Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.
17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.
18 Nevertheless in those days, saith the Lord, I will not make a full end with you.
19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the Lord our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not your's.
20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
22 Fear ye not me? saith the Lord: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.
24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the Lord our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.
26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.
28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30 A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;
31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

Laatste waarschuwing voor Jeruzalem
5 De Heer zegt: "Ga rond door de wijken van Jeruzalem. Kijk eens goed om je heen. Kijk of je ook maar íemand op straat kan vinden die eerlijk is, iemand die rechtvaardig is. Dan zal Ik de stad vergeven. 2 Maar de mensen zeggen wel 'Ik zweer het bij de Heer,' maar toch doen ze niet wat ze hebben gezworen."
Jeremia zegt: 3 "Heer, U zoekt toch naar waarheid en rechtvaardigheid? U heeft de mensen gestraft, maar het doet hun niets. Ze willen nog steeds niet veranderen. Ze blijven koppig en ongehoorzaam. Hun hart is nog harder dan steen. Ze weigeren U weer te gaan dienen.
4 Ik dacht: 'Dat komt doordat dit maar de gewone, arme mensen zijn, die de wet van God niet goed kennen. Zij weten niet hoe de Heer wil dat ze leven. Daarom doen ze zo dwaas. 5 Ik zal naar de leiders van het volk gaan en met hén spreken. Want zíj kennen Gods wet. Zíj weten wat Hij wil.' Maar zij wilden God niet dienen en waren bij Hem weggelopen. 6 Daarom worden ze gedood door een leeuw uit het bos, en aangevallen door een wolf uit de steppe, en ligt er een luipaard[a] op de loer bij hun steden. Iedereen die de stad uitgaat, zal worden verscheurd. Want ze zijn steeds meer slechte dingen gaan doen. Ze zijn in zoveel dingen ongehoorzaam geworden."
7 De Heer zegt: "Hoe kan Ik mijn volk dat vergeven? Het wil Mij niet dienen. Ze zweren bij goden die geen goden zijn. Ik ben altijd zó goed voor hen geweest! Maar toch liepen ze van Mij weg. Ze gingen naar andere goden. En de mannen gaan massaal naar de hoeren. 8 En ze zijn aldoor uit op de vrouw van een ander. Het lijken wel wilde hengsten die willen paren en naar alle merries hinniken. 9 Zou Ik hen daarvoor niet straffen? zegt de Heer. Kan Ik zo'n volk dan zomaar zijn gang laten gaan?
10 Daarom zeg Ik tegen de vijand: Klim over de muren en verniel de wijnstruik.[b] Maar hak hem niet helemaal om. Hak alleen de takken eraf, want die horen niet bij Mij. 11 Want Israël en Juda zijn Mij ontrouw geworden, zegt de Heer. 12 Israël en Juda willen niet meer bij Mij horen. Ze zeggen: 'Nee hoor, Hij is onze God niet. Maar er zal ons niets gebeuren. Er zal geen oorlog of honger komen. 13 De profeten zijn niet belangrijk. Je hoeft niet te luisteren naar wat ze zeggen. Want ze bedenken het allemaal zelf.' Zó gaat het met hen! 14 Jeremia, omdat ze dat zeggen, zullen mijn woorden in jouw mond een vuur zijn. En mijn volk is het hout dat door dat vuur zal verbranden. Dat zeg Ik, de Heer, de God van de hemelse legers."
Israëls straf voor zijn ontrouw aan God
15 De Heer zegt: "Israël, Ik laat uit de verte een volk naar je toe komen, zegt de Heer. Het is een sterk volk, een eeuwenoud volk waarvan jij de taal niet verstaat. 16 De pijlkoker van dat volk verslindt levens en al zijn boogschutters zijn helden. 17 Dat volk zal je oogst opeten en het brood dat voor je kinderen was. Het zal je schapen en koeien opeten. Het zal je wijn en je olijf-olie opmaken. Het zal je steden verwoesten, ook al dacht je dat je daar veilig was binnen de muren. 18 Maar ook in die tijd zal Ik niet voorgoed met jullie afrekenen. 19 Als jullie gaan vragen: 'Waarom heeft onze Heer God ons dit allemaal aangedaan?' zullen jullie als antwoord krijgen: 'Omdat jullie Mij hebben verlaten. Jullie zijn in je eigen land buitenlandse goden gaan dienen. Daarom zullen jullie in een ander land een buitenlands volk moeten gaan dienen.'
20 Zeg tegen de stammen van Israël en tegen het koninkrijk Juda: 21 Luister toch, dwaas en onverstandig volk! Jullie hebben wel ogen, maar jullie zien niet. En jullie hebben wel oren, maar jullie luisteren niet. 22 Hoe durven jullie te weigeren om ontzag voor Mij te hebben? zegt de Heer. Ik heb de grenzen van de zee bepaald. Het is een eeuwige grens waar de zee nooit overheen gaat. Al rollen en bruisen de golven, ze komen niet over de grens die Ik de zee heb gegeven. 23 Maar jullie zijn koppig en ongehoorzaam. Jullie houden je niet aan de grenzen die Ik jullie heb gegeven. Jullie zijn bij Mij weggelopen. 24 Jullie hebben niet bij jezelf gezegd: 'Laten we ontzag hebben voor onze Heer God. Want Hij geeft ons op de juiste tijd regen, in de herfst en in de lente. Hij geeft ons onze oogsten.' 25 Jullie zijn ongehoorzaam aan Mij. Daarom hebben jullie nu geen regen en geen oogsten.
26 Want veel van jullie trekken zich helemaal niets van Mij aan. Ze loeren op mensen zoals vogelvangers loeren op vogels. Ze zetten strikken en vangen mensen! 27 Zoals een kooi vol zit met vogels, zo zitten hun huizen vol met leugens en bedrog. Daarmee zijn ze rijk en machtig geworden. 28 Ze zijn vet en volgegeten. Ze zijn door en door slecht. Ze spreken oneerlijk recht. Ze komen niet op voor de arme mensen en de weeskinderen. Toch gaat het goed met hen. De arme mensen kunnen hun niets schelen. 29 Ik móet zo'n volk wel straffen, zegt de Heer. Ik kan zo'n volk toch niet zijn gang laten gaan? 30 Het is verschrikkelijk en afschuwelijk wat er allemaal in het land gebeurt. 31 Wat de profeten profeteren, zijn leugens. De priesters maken zich rijk ten koste van de mensen. En mijn volk vindt het allemaal best. Maar Ik ga er een eind aan maken. En wat zullen jullie dan doen?"

5 “Go up and down(A) the streets of Jerusalem,
look around and consider,(B)
search through her squares.
If you can find but one person(C)
who deals honestly(D) and seeks the truth,
I will forgive(E) this city.
2 Although they say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’(F)
still they are swearing falsely.(G)”
3 Lord, do not your eyes(H) look for truth?
You struck(I) them, but they felt no pain;
you crushed them, but they refused correction.(J)
They made their faces harder than stone(K)
and refused to repent.(L)
4 I thought, “These are only the poor;
they are foolish,(M)
for they do not know(N) the way of the Lord,
the requirements of their God.
5 So I will go to the leaders(O)
and speak to them;
surely they know the way of the Lord,
the requirements of their God.”
But with one accord they too had broken off the yoke
and torn off the bonds.(P)
6 Therefore a lion from the forest(Q) will attack them,
a wolf from the desert will ravage(R) them,
a leopard(S) will lie in wait near their towns
to tear to pieces any who venture out,
for their rebellion is great
and their backslidings many.(T)
7 “Why should I forgive you?
Your children have forsaken me
and sworn(U) by gods that are not gods.(V)
I supplied all their needs,
yet they committed adultery(W)
and thronged to the houses of prostitutes.(X)
8 They are well-fed, lusty stallions,
each neighing for another man’s wife.(Y)
9 Should I not punish them for this?”(Z)
declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge(AA) myself
on such a nation as this?
10 “Go through her vineyards and ravage them,
but do not destroy them completely.(AB)
Strip off her branches,
for these people do not belong to the Lord.
11 The people of Israel and the people of Judah
have been utterly unfaithful(AC) to me,”
declares the Lord.
12 They have lied(AD) about the Lord;
they said, “He will do nothing!
No harm will come to us;(AE)
we will never see sword or famine.(AF)
13 The prophets(AG) are but wind(AH)
and the word is not in them;
so let what they say be done to them.”
14 Therefore this is what the Lord God Almighty says:
“Because the people have spoken these words,
I will make my words in your mouth(AI) a fire(AJ)
and these people the wood it consumes.(AK)
15 People of Israel,” declares the Lord,
“I am bringing a distant nation(AL) against you—
an ancient and enduring nation,
a people whose language(AM) you do not know,
whose speech you do not understand.
16 Their quivers(AN) are like an open grave;
all of them are mighty warriors.
17 They will devour(AO) your harvests and food,
devour(AP) your sons and daughters;
they will devour(AQ) your flocks and herds,
devour your vines and fig trees.(AR)
With the sword(AS) they will destroy
the fortified cities(AT) in which you trust.(AU)
18 “Yet even in those days,” declares the Lord, “I will not destroy(AV) you completely. 19 And when the people ask,(AW) ‘Why has the Lord our God done all this to us?’ you will tell them, ‘As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods(AX) in your own land, so now you will serve foreigners(AY) in a land not your own.’
20 “Announce this to the descendants of Jacob
and proclaim(AZ) it in Judah:
21 Hear this, you foolish and senseless people,(BA)
who have eyes(BB) but do not see,
who have ears but do not hear:(BC)
22 Should you not fear(BD) me?” declares the Lord.
“Should you not tremble(BE) in my presence?
I made the sand a boundary for the sea,(BF)
an everlasting barrier it cannot cross.
The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail;
they may roar,(BG) but they cannot cross it.
23 But these people have stubborn and rebellious(BH) hearts;
they have turned aside(BI) and gone away.
24 They do not say to themselves,
‘Let us fear(BJ) the Lord our God,
who gives autumn and spring rains(BK) in season,
who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.’(BL)
25 Your wrongdoings have kept these away;
your sins have deprived you of good.(BM)
26 “Among my people are the wicked(BN)
who lie in wait(BO) like men who snare birds
and like those who set traps(BP) to catch people.
27 Like cages full of birds,
their houses are full of deceit;(BQ)
they have become rich(BR) and powerful
28 and have grown fat(BS) and sleek.
Their evil deeds have no limit;
they do not seek justice.
They do not promote the case of the fatherless;(BT)
they do not defend the just cause of the poor.(BU)
29 Should I not punish them for this?”
declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge(BV) myself
on such a nation as this?
