44 Esta palabra vino a Jeremías para todos los judíos que habitaban en Egipto; es decir, para los que vivían en las ciudades de Migdol, Tafnes y Menfis,[a] y en la región de Patros: 2 «Así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “Ustedes han visto todas las calamidades que yo provoqué sobre Jerusalén y sobre todas las ciudades de Judá. Hoy están desiertas y en ruinas, sin morador alguno, 3 a causa de las maldades que cometieron. Ellos provocaron mi enojo al adorar y ofrecer incienso a otros dioses que ni ellos, ni ustedes, ni sus antepasados conocieron. 4 Una y otra vez envié a mis siervos los profetas para que les advirtieran que no incurrieran en estas cosas tan abominables que yo detesto. 5 Pero ellos no escucharon ni prestaron atención; no se arrepintieron de sus maldades, sino que siguieron ofreciendo incienso a otros dioses. 6 Por eso se derramó mi ira y se encendió mi furor contra las ciudades de Judá y las calles de Jerusalén, las cuales se convirtieron en ruina hasta el día de hoy”.

7 »Y ahora, así dice el Señor, el Dios de los Ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “¿Por qué se provocan ustedes mismos un mal tan grande? ¿Por qué provocan la muerte de la gente de Judá, de hombres, mujeres, niños y recién nacidos, sin que quede un remanente? 8 Me agravian con las obras de sus manos, al ofrecer incienso a otros dioses en el país de Egipto, donde han ido a vivir. Lo único que están logrando es ganarse su propia destrucción, además de convertirse en maldición y deshonra entre todas las naciones de la tierra. 9 ¿Acaso ya se han olvidado de todas las maldades que cometieron sus antepasados, las de los reyes de Judá y sus esposas, además de las que ustedes y sus esposas cometieron en Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén? 10 Sin embargo, hasta el día de hoy no se han humillado ni han sentido temor; no se han comportado según mi Ley y mis estatutos, que les di a ustedes y a sus antepasados”.

11 »Por eso, así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “He decidido ponerme en contra de ustedes, para su mal, y destruir a todo Judá. 12 Tomaré al remanente de Judá, que decidió ir a vivir a Egipto y todos perecerán allí; caerán a filo de espada o el hambre los exterminará. Desde el más pequeño hasta el más grande, morirán a filo de espada o de hambre. Se convertirán en objeto de maldición, de horror, de condenación y deshonra. 13 Con la espada, el hambre y la plaga castigaré a los que habitan en Egipto, como castigué a Jerusalén. 14 No escapará ninguno del remanente de Judá que se fue a vivir a Egipto ni sobrevivirá para volver a Judá. Aunque deseen y añoren volver a vivir en Judá, no podrán regresar, salvo algunos fugitivos”».

15 Entonces los hombres que sabían que sus esposas ofrecían incienso a otros dioses, así como las mujeres que estaban presentes; es decir, un grupo numeroso, junto a todo el pueblo que vivía en la región de Patros, respondieron a Jeremías:

16 «No le haremos caso al mensaje que nos diste en el nombre del Señor. 17 Al contrario, seguiremos haciendo lo que ya hemos dicho: Ofreceremos incienso y ofrendas líquidas a la Reina del Cielo,[b] como lo hemos hecho nosotros, y como antes lo hicieron nuestros antepasados, nuestros reyes y nuestros oficiales, en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén. En aquel tiempo teníamos comida en abundancia, nos iba muy bien y no sufríamos ninguna calamidad. 18 Pero desde que dejamos de ofrecer incienso y ofrendas líquidas a la Reina del Cielo nos ha faltado todo; el hambre y la espada están acabando con nosotros».

19 Y las mujeres añadieron:

«Cuando nosotras ofrecíamos incienso y ofrendas líquidas a la Reina del Cielo, ¿acaso no sabían nuestros maridos que hacíamos tortas con su imagen y que les ofrecíamos ofrendas líquidas?».

20 Entonces Jeremías respondió a todo el pueblo, es decir, a los hombres y mujeres que habían contestado:

21 «¿Piensan ustedes que el Señor no se acuerda o no se daba cuenta de que ustedes y sus antepasados, sus reyes y sus oficiales y todo el pueblo, ofrecían incienso en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén? 22 Cuando el Señor ya no pudo soportar más las malas acciones y las cosas abominables que ustedes hacían, su país se convirtió en objeto de maldición, en un lugar desértico, desolado y sin habitantes, tal como está hoy. 23 Ustedes ofrecieron incienso y pecaron contra el Señor; no obedecieron su voz ni cumplieron con su Ley, sus estatutos y mandatos. Por eso en este día les ha sobrevenido esta desgracia».

24 Jeremías dijo a todo el pueblo, incluyendo a las mujeres: «Escuchen la palabra del Señor todos ustedes, gente de Judá que vive en Egipto. 25 Así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: Cuando ustedes y sus mujeres dicen: “Ciertamente cumpliremos nuestras promesas de ofrecer incienso y ofrendas líquidas a la Reina del Cielo”, demuestran con sus acciones que cumplen lo que prometen.

»¡Está bien, vayan y cumplan sus promesas, lleven a cabo sus promesas! 26 Pero escuchen la palabra del Señor todos ustedes, gente de Judá que vive en Egipto: “Juro por mi nombre soberano —dice el Señor—, que ninguno de los de Judá que vive en Egipto volverá a invocar mi nombre diciendo: ¡Tan cierto como el Señor y Dios vive! 27 Porque yo los estoy vigilando para mal y no para bien. La espada y el hambre acabarán con todos los judíos que viven en Egipto. 28 Tan solo unos pocos lograrán escapar de la espada y regresar a Judá. Entonces todo el remanente de Judá que se fue a vivir a Egipto sabrá si se cumple mi palabra o la de ellos.

29 »”Esta será la señal de que voy a castigarlos en este lugar, para que sepan que mis amenazas contra ustedes se habrán de cumplir”, afirma el Señor. 30 Así dice el Señor: “Voy a entregar al faraón Hofra, rey de Egipto, en poder de los enemigos que atentan contra su vida, tal como entregué a Sedequías, rey de Judá, en poder de su enemigo Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, que atentaba contra su vida”».

44 Palabra que vino a Jeremías acerca de todos los judíos que habitaban en la tierra de Egipto, que vivían en Migdol, en Tafnes, en Menfis y en tierra de Patros, diciendo: 2 «Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: Vosotros habéis visto todo el mal que traje sobre Jerusalén y sobre todas las ciudades de Judá. Ahora están asoladas, y no hay quien habite en ellas 3 a causa de la maldad que ellos cometieron para enojarme, yendo a ofrecer incienso, honrando a dioses extraños que ni ellos habían conocido, ni vosotros ni vuestros padres. 4 Envié a vosotros todos mis siervos los profetas, desde el principio y sin cesar, para deciros: “¡No hagáis esta cosa abominable que yo aborrezco!” 5 Pero no oyeron ni inclinaron su oído para convertirse de su maldad, para dejar de ofrecer incienso a dioses extraños. 6 Se derramó, por tanto, mi ira y mi furor, y se encendió en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén. Y fueron puestas en ruina y desolación, como lo están hoy. 7 Ahora, pues, así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: ¿Por qué hacéis un mal tan grande contra vosotros mismos, para que en medio de Judá sean destruidos el hombre y la mujer, el muchacho y el niño de pecho, sin que os quede resto alguno, 8 haciéndome enojar con las obras de vuestras manos, ofreciendo incienso a dioses extraños en la tierra de Egipto, adonde habéis entrado para vivir, de suerte que os exterminéis y seáis por maldición y por afrenta a todas las naciones de la tierra? 9 ¿Os habéis olvidado de las maldades de vuestros padres, de las maldades de los reyes de Judá, de las maldades de sus mujeres, de vuestras maldades y de las maldades de vuestras mujeres, que hicisteis en la tierra de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén? 10 No se han humillado hasta el día de hoy ni han tenido temor; no han caminado en mi Ley ni en mis estatutos, los cuales puse delante de vosotros y delante de vuestros padres.

11 »Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: Yo vuelvo mi rostro contra vosotros para mal, para destruir a todo Judá. 12 Y tomaré al resto de Judá que se obstinó en irse a la tierra de Egipto, para habitar allí, y en tierra de Egipto serán todos exterminados. Caerán a espada y serán exterminados por el hambre: por la espada y el hambre morirán desde el menor hasta el mayor, y serán objeto de aversión, de espanto, de maldición y de afrenta, 13 pues castigaré a los que habitan en la tierra de Egipto como castigué a Jerusalén, con espada, con hambre y con peste. 14 Y del resto de los de Judá que entraron en la tierra de Egipto para habitar allí, no habrá quien escape ni quien quede vivo para volver a la tierra de Judá, a la cual ansían volver para habitar allí; porque no volverán sino algunos fugitivos.»

15 Entonces todos los que sabían que sus mujeres habían ofrecido incienso a dioses ajenos, y todas las mujeres que estaban presentes, una gran concurrencia, y todo el pueblo que habitaba en tierra de Egipto, en Patros, respondieron a Jeremías, diciendo: 16 «No escucharemos de ti la palabra que nos has hablado en nombre de Jehová, 17 sino que ciertamente pondremos por obra toda palabra que ha salido de nuestra boca, para ofrecer incienso a la reina del cielo y derramarle libaciones, como hemos hecho nosotros y nuestros padres, nuestros reyes y nuestros jefes, en las ciudades de Judá y en las plazas de Jerusalén. Entonces tuvimos abundancia de pan, fuimos felices y no vimos mal alguno. 18 Pero desde que dejamos de ofrecer incienso a la reina del cielo y de derramarle libaciones, nos falta de todo, y por la espada y el hambre somos exterminados. 19 Y cuando nosotras ofrecimos incienso a la reina del cielo y le derramamos libaciones, ¿acaso le hicimos tortas para tributarle culto, o le derramamos libaciones sin consentimiento de nuestros maridos?»

20 Habló Jeremías a todo el pueblo, a los hombres, a las mujeres y a todo el pueblo que le había respondido esto, diciendo: 21 «¿No se ha acordado Jehová, no ha venido a su memoria el incienso que ofrecisteis en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén, vosotros y vuestros padres, vuestros reyes, vuestros jefes y el pueblo de la tierra? 22 Y no pudo sufrirlo más Jehová, a causa de la maldad de vuestras obras, a causa de las abominaciones que habíais hecho; por tanto, vuestra tierra fue puesta en asolamiento, en espanto y en maldición, hasta quedar sin habitante, como lo está hoy. 23 Por cuanto ofrecisteis incienso y pecasteis contra Jehová, y no obedecisteis a la voz de Jehová ni anduvisteis en su Ley, en sus estatutos y en sus testimonios, por eso ha venido sobre vosotros este mal, como hasta hoy.»

24 Dijo además Jeremías a todo el pueblo y a todas las mujeres: «Oíd palabra de Jehová, todos los de Judá que estáis en tierra de Egipto. 25 Así ha hablado Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel; ha dicho: “Vosotros y vuestras mujeres hablasteis con vuestras propias bocas, y con vuestras manos lo ejecutasteis, diciendo: ‘Cumpliremos efectivamente nuestros votos que hicimos de ofrecer incienso a la reina del cielo y derramarle libaciones.’ Y ahora confirmáis vuestros votos y ponéis vuestros votos por obra. 26 Por tanto, oíd palabra de Jehová todos los de Judá que habitáis en tierra de Egipto: Yo he jurado por mi gran nombre, dice Jehová, que mi nombre no será invocado más en toda la tierra de Egipto por boca de ningún hombre de Judá, diciendo: ‘¡Vive Jehová, el Señor!’, 27 porque yo vigilo sobre ellos para mal y no para bien. Todos los hombres de Judá que están en la tierra de Egipto serán exterminados por la espada y el hambre, hasta que no quede ninguno. 28 Y los pocos que escapen de la espada volverán de la tierra de Egipto a la tierra de Judá. Sabrá, pues, todo el resto de Judá que ha entrado en Egipto a vivir allí, cuál palabra se cumplirá: si la mía o la suya. 29 Y esto tendréis por señal, dice Jehová, de que en este lugar os castigo, para que sepáis que de cierto se cumplirán mis palabras para mal sobre vosotros, 30 pues así ha dicho Jehová: Yo entrego al faraón Hofra, rey de Egipto, en manos de sus enemigos, y en manos de los que buscan su vida, así como entregué a Sedequías, rey de Judá, en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, su enemigo que quería quitarle la vida.”»

44 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Judeans who were living in the land of Egypt, who were living at Migdol, and Tahpanhes, and Memphis, and in the land of Pathros, saying,[a] 2 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen all the disaster that I have brought on Jerusalem, and on all the towns of Judah. And look, they are a site of ruins this day, and there is not in them an inhabitant, 3 because of[b] their wickedness that they committed to provoke me to anger by going to make smoke offerings, serving other gods whom they had not known, neither they, you, or your ancestors.[c] 4 And I sent to you all my servants the prophets, sending over and over again,[d] saying,[e] “Please, you must not do this detestable thing that I hate.” 5 But they did not listen and they did not incline their ears[f] to turn back from their wickedness, to not make smoke offerings to other gods. 6 So my wrath and my anger were poured out[g] and burned[h] in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, and they became as a site of ruins, as a desolation, as they are this day.’

7 So then, thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Why are you doing great harm to yourselves,[i] to cut off for yourselves man and woman, child and suckling, from the midst of Judah, to not leave over for yourselves a remnant, 8 provoking me to anger with the works of your hands, to make smoke offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to dwell as aliens, so as to cut off yourselves, and so that you are becoming as a curse, and as a disgrace among all the nations of the earth? 9 Have you forgotten the wicked things of your ancestors,[j] and the wicked things of the kings of Judah, and the wicked things of their wives, and your wicked things, and the wicked things of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not shown contrition up to this day, and they have not shown reverence, and they have not walked in my law and in my statutes that I set before you[k] and before[l] your ancestors.’[m]

11 Therefore[n] thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Look, I am determined to bring disaster on you,[o] even to exterminate all Judah. 12 And I will take away the remnant of Judah who are determined[p] to come to the land of Egypt to dwell as aliens there, and everyone will perish. They will fall in the land of Egypt by the sword; they will perish by the famine, from the smallest to the greatest. By the sword and by the famine they will die and become as a curse, as a horror, and as a curse, and as a disgrace. 13 So I will punish those who live in the land of Egypt just as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with the famine, and with the plague. 14 And there will not be a survivor or an escapee of the remnant of Judah, those who have come to dwell as an alien there in the land of Egypt, to return to the land of Judah where they are longing[q] to return to dwell there, for they will not turn back, but only[r] some survivors.’”

15 Then all the men who knew that their wives were making smoke offerings to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, and all the people who lived in the land of Egypt in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,[s] 16 “Concerning the word that you have spoken to us in the name of Yahweh, we are not going to listen to you! 17 But certainly we will do everything[t] that went out from our mouths,[u] to make smoke offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out to her libations just as we did, we, and our ancestors,[v] our kings, and our officials, in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, for then we had enough to eat,[w] and we were well-off, and we did not see disaster. 18 But since[x] we stopped making smoke offerings to the queen of heaven and pouring out libations to her, we have lacked everything, and by the sword and by the famine we have perished. 19 And indeed, when we were making smoke offerings to the queen of heaven and pouring out[y] to her libations, was it not with the consent of[z] our husbands that we made for her sacrificial cakes marked with her image,[aa] and we poured out to her libations?”

20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men and to the women, and to all the people who answered him a word, saying,[ab] 21 “The offering that you made, smoke offerings in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you, and your ancestors,[ac] your kings, and your officials, and the people of the land, did not Yahweh remember them, and did it not come to his mind?[ad] 22 And Yahweh was no longer able to bear[ae] it, because of[af] the evil of your deeds, because of[ag] the detestable things that you committed. Thus your land became as a site of ruins, and as a horror, and as a curse, without[ah] inhabitants, as it is this day. 23 Because of[ai] the fact that you made smoke offerings, and that you sinned against Yahweh, and you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh, and you have not walked in his law, and in his statute, and in his legal provisions, therefore[aj] this disaster has happened to you, as it is this day.”

24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people and to all the women, “Hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt. 25 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, saying,[ak] ‘You and your wives have promised with your mouths[al] and with your hands[am] you have fulfilled, saying,[an] “We certainly will carry out our vows that we vowed, to make smoke offerings to the queen of the heavens,[ao] and to pour out to her libations.” You must certainly keep your vows and you must certainly carry out your vows.’ 26 Therefore[ap] hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah, those who live in the land of Egypt: ‘Look, I hereby swear by my great name,’ says Yahweh, ‘surely my name will no longer be called in the mouth of any man of Judah, saying, “as the Lord Yahweh lives,”[aq] in all the land of Egypt. 27 Look, I am going to watch over them for harm and not for good, and all people[ar] of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will perish by the sword and by the famine until their perishing. 28 And the survivors of the sword will return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah few in number.[as] And all the remnant of Judah who have come to the land of Egypt to dwell as aliens there will know whose word will endure, from me or from them. 29 And this will be to you the sign,’ declares[at] Yahweh, ‘that I am going to punish you in this place, so that you may know that surely my words will endure against you for evil.’ 30 Thus says Yahweh: ‘Look, I am going to give Pharaoh Hophra, the king of Egypt, into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of those who seek his life, just as I gave Zedekiah the king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, his enemy and the one who sought his life.’”
