43 Cuando Jeremías terminó de comunicar al pueblo todo lo que el Señor su Dios había encomendado decirles, 2 Azarías, hijo de Osaías, Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los arrogantes respondieron a Jeremías: «¡Lo que dices es una mentira! El Señor, nuestro Dios, no te mandó a decirnos que no vayamos a vivir a Egipto. 3 Es Baruc, hijo de Nerías, el que te incita contra nosotros, para entregarnos en poder de los babilonios,[a] para que nos maten o nos lleven cautivos a Babilonia».

4 Así que ni Johanán, hijo de Carea, ni los oficiales del ejército, ni nadie del pueblo obedecieron el mandato del Señor de quedarse a vivir en la tierra de Judá. 5 Por el contrario, Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los oficiales del ejército se llevaron a todo el remanente de Judá; es decir, a los que habían vuelto para vivir en Judá luego de haber sido dispersados por todas las naciones: 6 los hombres, las mujeres y los niños, las hijas del rey y todos los que Nabuzaradán, comandante de la guardia, había confiado a Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán y nieto de Safán; también a Jeremías el profeta y a Baruc, hijo de Nerías. 7 Desobedeciendo la orden del Señor, se dirigieron al país de Egipto, llegando hasta la ciudad de Tafnes.

8 En Tafnes, la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías: 9 «Toma en tus manos unas piedras grandes y, a la vista de los judíos, entiérralas con argamasa en el pavimento, frente a la entrada del palacio del faraón en Tafnes. 10 Luego comunícales que así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “Voy a mandar a buscar a mi siervo Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia; voy a colocar su trono sobre estas piedras que he enterrado, y él armará sobre ellas su tienda real. 11 Vendrá al país de Egipto y lo atacará: el que esté destinado a la muerte, morirá; el que esté destinado al exilio, será exiliado; el que esté destinado a la espada, morirá por la espada. 12 Prenderá[b] fuego a los templos de los dioses de Egipto; los quemará y los llevará cautivos. Sacudirá a Egipto, como un pastor que se sacude los piojos de la ropa, y luego se irá de allí en paz. 13 Destruirá los obeliscos de Bet Semes[c] y prenderá fuego a los templos de los dioses de Egipto”».

43 Aconteció que cuando Jeremías acabó de hablar a todo el pueblo todas las palabras de Jehová, su Dios, todas estas palabras que Jehová, su Dios, le había enviado a decirles, 2 Azarías hijo de Osaías, Johanán hijo de Carea y todos los hombres soberbios dijeron a Jeremías: «¡Mentira dices! No te ha enviado Jehová, nuestro Dios, para decirnos: “No vayáis a Egipto para habitar allí”, 3 sino que Baruc hijo de Nerías te incita contra nosotros, para entregarnos en manos de los caldeos, para matarnos y hacernos deportar a Babilonia.» 4 No obedecieron, pues, ni Johanán hijo de Carea ni los capitanes de la gente de guerra ni todo el pueblo, a la voz de Jehová para que se quedaran en tierra de Judá, 5 sino que Johanán hijo de Carea, con todos los capitanes de la gente de guerra, tomaron al resto de Judá, que había regresado de todas las naciones adonde había sido echado, para habitar en tierra de Judá. 6 Eran los hombres, mujeres y niños, las hijas del rey y todas las demás personas que junto con Gedalías hijo de Ahicam hijo de Safán, y con el profeta Jeremías y Baruc hijo de Nerías, había dejado Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia. 7 Entraron, pues, en tierra de Egipto, sin obedecer a la voz de Jehová, y llegaron hasta Tafnes.

8 Vino palabra de Jehová a Jeremías en Tafnes, diciendo: 9 «Toma en tus manos unas piedras grandes y cúbrelas de barro en el enladrillado que está a la puerta de la casa del faraón en Tafnes, a la vista de los hombres de Judá, 10 y diles: “Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: Yo enviaré y tomaré a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, mi siervo, y pondré su trono sobre estas piedras que he escondido, y él extenderá su pabellón sobre ellas. 11 Vendrá y asolará la tierra de Egipto: los que a muerte, a muerte; los que a cautiverio, a cautiverio, y los que a espada, a espada. 12 Incendiará los templos de los dioses de Egipto; los quemará, y a ellos los llevará cautivos. Limpiará la tierra de Egipto, como el pastor limpia su capa, y saldrá de allá en paz. 13 Destruirá, además, las estatuas de Bet-semes, que está en tierra de Egipto, y entregará al fuego los templos de los dioses de Egipto.”»

43 And then,[a] when Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of Yahweh their God, for which Yahweh their God had sent him to them with all these words, 2 Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the insolent men spoke,[b] saying to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie! Yahweh our God did not send you, saying,[c] ‘You must not go to Egypt to dwell as aliens there.’ 3 But Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us in order to give us into the hand of the Chaldeans, to kill us and to deport us to Babylon.”

4 So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies, and all the people did not listen[d] to the voice of Yahweh to stay in the land of Judah. 5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies took[e] all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been scattered to dwell as aliens in the land of Judah— 6 the men, and the women, and the little children, and the daughters of the king, and everyone[f] whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard[g] had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah— 7 and they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not listen to the voice of Yahweh. And they came up to Tahpanhes.

The Throne of Nebuchadnezzar Will be Set Up at Tahpanhes

8 And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, 9 “Take in your hands[h] large stones and bury them in the mortar in the clay floor that is at the entrance of the palace[i] of Pharaoh in Tahpanhes before the eyes of the people[j] of the Judeans, 10 and say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: “Look, I am going to send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden. And he will spread out his canopy over them. 11 And he will come and ravage the land of Egypt, and deliver those who are appointed for the plague, to the plague, and those who are appointed for the captivity, to the captivity, and those who are appointed for the sword, to the sword. 12 Then he will kindle a fire in the temples[k] of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive. And he will wrap up the land of Egypt just as the shepherd wraps up his cloak. And he will go forth from there in peace. 13 And he will break the stone pillars of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt. And he will burn the temples[l] of the gods of Egypt with fire.”’”

43 When Jeremiah had finished telling the people all the words of the Lord their God—everything the Lord had sent him to tell them(A)— 2 Azariah son of Hoshaiah(B) and Johanan(C) son of Kareah and all the arrogant(D) men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying!(E) The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to settle there.’(F) 3 But Baruch(G) son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Babylonians,[a] so they may kill us or carry us into exile to Babylon.”(H)

4 So Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers and all the people(I) disobeyed the Lord’s command(J) to stay in the land of Judah.(K) 5 Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers led away all the remnant of Judah who had come back to live in the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been scattered.(L) 6 They also led away all those whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan—the men, the women,(M) the children and the king’s daughters. And they took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch(N) son of Neriah along with them. 7 So they entered Egypt(O) in disobedience to the Lord and went as far as Tahpanhes.(P)

8 In Tahpanhes(Q) the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 9 “While the Jews are watching, take some large stones(R) with you and bury them in clay in the brick(S) pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace(T) in Tahpanhes. 10 Then say to them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I will send for my servant(U) Nebuchadnezzar(V) king of Babylon, and I will set his throne(W) over these stones I have buried here; he will spread his royal canopy(X) above them. 11 He will come and attack Egypt,(Y) bringing death(Z) to those destined(AA) for death, captivity to those destined for captivity,(AB) and the sword to those destined for the sword.(AC) 12 He will set fire(AD) to the temples(AE) of the gods(AF) of Egypt; he will burn their temples and take their gods captive.(AG) As a shepherd picks(AH) his garment clean of lice, so he will pick Egypt clean and depart. 13 There in the temple of the sun[b](AI) in Egypt he will demolish the sacred pillars(AJ) and will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.’”
