Un llamado al arrepentimiento

4 Si has de volver, oh Israel —declara el Señor—
vuélvete a mí(A).
Si quitas de mi presencia tus abominaciones,
y no vacilas(B),
2 y juras: «Vive el Señor(C)»,
en verdad, en juicio y en justicia(D),
entonces se bendecirán en Él las naciones(E),
y en Él se gloriarán(F).

3 Porque así dice el Señor a los hombres de Judá y de Jerusalén:

Romped el barbecho(G),
y no sembréis entre espinos(H).
4 Circuncidaos para el Señor,
y quitad los prepucios de vuestros corazones,
hombres de Judá y habitantes de Jerusalén(I),
no sea que mi furor(J) salga como fuego
y arda y no haya quien lo apague(K),
a causa de la maldad de vuestras obras.

5 Declarad en Judá y proclamad en Jerusalén, y decid:
Tocad la trompeta en la tierra(L);
clamad en alta voz, y decid:
«Reuníos y entremos
en las ciudades fortificadas(M)».
6 Izad bandera(N) hacia Sión;
buscad refugio, no os detengáis;
porque traigo del norte la calamidad,
una gran destrucción(O).
7 Ha salido el león de la[a] espesura,
y el destructor de naciones se ha puesto en marcha(P);
ha salido de su lugar
para convertir tu tierra en desolación(Q).
Tus ciudades quedarán en ruinas, sin habitantes(R).
8 Por eso, vestíos de cilicio,
lamentaos y gemid(S);
porque no se ha apartado de nosotros
la ardiente ira del Señor(T).
9 Y sucederá en aquel día —declara el Señor—
que fallará el corazón del rey
y el corazón de los príncipes(U);
se quedarán atónitos los sacerdotes
y los profetas se pasmarán(V).

10 Entonces dije: ¡Ah, Señor Dios[b]! Ciertamente has engañado(W) en gran manera a este pueblo y a Jerusalén, diciendo: «Paz tendréis», cuando tienen la espada al cuello[c](X).

11 En aquel tiempo se dirá a este pueblo y a Jerusalén: Un viento abrasador de las alturas desoladas del desierto(Y), en dirección a la hija de mi pueblo, no para aventar, ni para limpiar, 12 un viento demasiado fuerte para esto[d], vendrá a mi mandato[e]. Ahora yo[f] pronunciaré juicios contra ellos.

13 He aquí que él sube como las nubes(Z),
y como un torbellino sus carros(AA);
sus caballos son más ligeros que las águilas(AB).
¡Ay de nosotros, porque estamos perdidos(AC)!

14 Lava de maldad tu corazón, Jerusalén,
para que seas salva.
¿Hasta cuándo morarán dentro de ti
pensamientos perversos(AD)?
15 Porque una voz lo anuncia desde Dan(AE),
y proclama el mal desde los montes de Efraín.
16 Avisadlo a las naciones: ¡Aquí están!
Proclamad sobre Jerusalén:
«Sitiadores vienen de tierra lejana(AF)
y alzan sus voces(AG) contra las ciudades de Judá.
17 Como guardas de campo están apostados contra ella por todos lados(AH),
porque se ha rebelado contra mí(AI)» —declara el Señor.
18 Tu comportamiento y tus acciones
te han traído[g] estas cosas.
Esta es tu maldad(AJ). ¡Qué amarga(AK)!
¡Cómo ha penetrado hasta tu corazón!

19 ¡Alma mía[h], alma mía[i]!
Estoy angustiado, ¡oh corazón mío[j]!
Mi corazón se agita dentro de mí;
no callaré(AL),
porque has oído, alma mía[k](AM),
el sonido de la trompeta,
el pregón de guerra(AN).
20 Desastre sobre desastre se anuncia(AO),
porque es arrasada toda la tierra(AP);
de repente son arrasadas mis tiendas,
en un instante mis cortinas(AQ).
21 ¿Hasta cuándo he de ver la bandera
y he de oír el sonido de la trompeta?
22 Porque mi pueblo es necio,
no me conoce;
hijos torpes son,
no son inteligentes(AR).
Astutos son para hacer el mal,
pero hacer el bien no saben(AS).

23 Miré a la tierra, y he aquí que estaba sin orden y vacía[l];
y a los cielos, y no tenían luz(AT).
24 Miré a los montes, y he aquí que temblaban,
y todas las colinas se estremecían[m](AU).
25 Miré, y he aquí que no había hombre alguno,
y todas las aves del cielo habían huido(AV).
26 Miré, y he aquí que la tierra fértil[n] era un desierto(AW),
y todas sus ciudades estaban arrasadas
delante del Señor, delante del ardor de su ira.

27 Porque así dice el Señor:

Una desolación será toda la tierra(AX),
pero no causaré una destrucción total(AY).
28 Por eso se enlutará la tierra(AZ),
y se oscurecerán los cielos arriba(BA),
porque he hablado, lo he decidido,
y no me arrepentiré[o], ni me retractaré de ello(BB).
29 Al ruido de jinetes y arqueros huye toda la ciudad(BC);
entran en las espesuras y trepan por los peñascos(BD).
Toda ciudad está abandonada,
y no queda en ellas morador alguno(BE).
30 Y tú, desolada, ¿qué harás(BF)?
Aunque te vistas de escarlata,
aunque te pongas[p] adornos de oro,
aunque te agrandes con pintura los ojos(BG),
en vano te embelleces;
te desprecian tus amantes,
solo buscan tu vida(BH).
31 Porque oí un grito[q] como de mujer de parto(BI),
angustia como de primeriza;
era el grito[r] de la hija de Sión que se ahogaba,
y extendía sus manos[s](BJ), diciendo:
¡Ay ahora de mí, porque desfallezco[t] ante los asesinos!

Exhortación al arrepentimiento

4 El Señor afirma:
«Si te quieres volver, Israel,
es a mí a quien debes volverte.
Si alejas tus ídolos odiosos
y no te apartas de mí,
2 entonces podrás jurar por mi nombre
con verdad, justicia y rectitud.
Mi nombre será para las naciones
motivo de bendición y alabanza.»

3 El Señor dice a la gente de Judá y Jerusalén:

«Cultiven terrenos no cultivados;
ya no siembren entre los espinos.
4 Gente de Judá y de Jerusalén,
circuncídense y reconózcanme como Señor,
pongan en su corazón la marca de la alianza;
no sea que, por sus malas acciones,
mi enojo se encienda como un fuego
y arda sin que nadie pueda apagarlo.

La invasión amenaza a Judá

5 »Anuncien esto en Jerusalén y en Judá,
proclámenlo a son de trompeta por todo el país,
grítenlo bien fuerte:
“¡Vamos! ¡A reunirse!
¡A las ciudades fortificadas!”
6 Levanten la bandera apuntando a Sión;
¡busquen refugio, no se detengan!
Porque voy a traer del norte
gran calamidad y destrucción.
7 El león ya ha salido de su guarida,
el que destruye las naciones está en marcha;
ha salido de su patria para destruir tu país,
para dejar desiertas y en ruinas tus ciudades.
8 Por eso, vístanse con ropas ásperas,
lloren y giman de dolor,
pues la ardiente ira del Señor
no se ha apartado de nosotros.»

9 El Señor afirma:
«Cuando llegue ese día,
el rey y los jefes temblarán de miedo,
los sacerdotes sentirán terror
y los profetas quedarán espantados.»

10 Yo dije: «¡Ay, Señor,
cómo has engañado a la gente de Jerusalén!
Les prometiste paz,
y lo que tienen es un cuchillo en el cuello.»

11 Cuando llegue ese momento,
se dirá al pueblo de Jerusalén:
«Un viento caliente del desierto
sopla en dirección de mi pueblo.
No es la brisa que sirve
para limpiar de paja el trigo;
12 el viento que yo haré venir
será demasiado fuerte para eso,
pues ahora voy a dictar sentencia contra ellos.»

Los enemigos rodean a Israel

13 Miren, el enemigo avanza como una nube,
sus carros de guerra parecen un huracán,
sus caballos son más ligeros que las águilas.
¡Ay de nosotros, estamos perdidos!
14 Jerusalén, limpia del mal tu corazón
y así te salvarás.
¿Hasta cuándo darás vueltas en tu cabeza
a pensamientos perversos?
15 Desde Dan y las colinas de Efraín
llegan malas noticias:
16 «Adviertan a las naciones y a Jerusalén
que de un país lejano vienen enemigos
lanzando gritos de guerra
contra las ciudades de Judá.
17 Rodearán a Judá, como los que cuidan los campos,
porque se rebeló contra el Señor.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.

18 »Tu conducta y tus acciones
son la causa de lo que te ha sucedido;
tu maldad te ha dado este amargo fruto
y te hiere el corazón.»

Dolor de Jeremías por su pueblo

19 ¡Me retuerzo de dolor!
¡El corazón me palpita con violencia!
¡Estoy inquieto, no puedo callarme!
He escuchado un toque de trompeta,
un griterío de guerra.
20 Llegan noticias de continuos desastres;
todo el país está en ruinas.
De repente han sido destruidos mis campamentos,
han quedado deshechas mis tiendas de campaña.
21 ¿Cuánto tiempo aún veré en lo alto la bandera
y escucharé el toque de la trompeta?
22 «Mi pueblo es estúpido, no me conoce
—dice el Señor.
Son hijos sin juicio, que no reflexionan.
Les sobra talento para hacer el mal,
pero no saben hacer el bien.»

Jeremías ve la destrucción futura

23 Miré a la tierra, y era un desierto sin forma;
miré al cielo, y no había luz.
24 Miré a los montes, y estaban temblando;
todas las colinas se estremecían.
25 Miré y ya no había ningún hombre,
y todas las aves se habían escapado.
26 Miré y vi los jardines convertidos en desierto,
y todas las ciudades estaban en ruinas.
La ira terrible del Señor
había causado todo esto.

27 El Señor dice:
«Toda la tierra será arrasada,
pero no la destruiré totalmente.
28 La tierra se llenará de tristeza
y el cielo se pondrá de luto.
He hablado, y no me arrepentiré;
lo he resuelto, y no me volveré atrás.
29 Ante los gritos de los jinetes y de los arqueros,
toda la gente sale corriendo;
se esconden en los matorrales
o trepan a los peñascos.
Todas las ciudades quedan abandonadas;
ya no hay nadie que viva en ellas.
30 Y tú, ciudad en ruinas,
¿para qué te vistes de púrpura?,
¿para qué te cubres con joyas de oro?,
¿para qué te pintas de negro los ojos?
De nada sirve que te embellezcas,
pues tus amantes te han rechazado
y lo que buscan es tu muerte.
31 Oigo gritos de dolor, como de una mujer
que da a luz a su primer hijo;
son los gritos de Sión,
que gime, extiende los brazos y dice:
“¡Ay de mí! ¡Me van a matar los asesinos!”»

4 “If you, Israel, will return,(A)
    then return to me,”
declares the Lord.
“If you put your detestable idols(B) out of my sight
    and no longer go astray,
2 and if in a truthful, just and righteous way
    you swear,(C) ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’(D)
then the nations will invoke blessings(E) by him
    and in him they will boast.(F)”

3 This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem:

“Break up your unplowed ground(G)
    and do not sow among thorns.(H)
4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
    circumcise your hearts,(I)
    you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
or my wrath(J) will flare up and burn like fire(K)
    because of the evil(L) you have done—
    burn with no one to quench(M) it.

Disaster From the North

5 “Announce in Judah and proclaim(N) in Jerusalem and say:
    ‘Sound the trumpet(O) throughout the land!’
Cry aloud and say:
    ‘Gather together!
    Let us flee to the fortified cities!’(P)
6 Raise the signal(Q) to go to Zion!
    Flee for safety without delay!
For I am bringing disaster(R) from the north,(S)
    even terrible destruction.”

7 A lion(T) has come out of his lair;(U)
    a destroyer(V) of nations has set out.
He has left his place
    to lay waste(W) your land.
Your towns will lie in ruins(X)
    without inhabitant.
8 So put on sackcloth,(Y)
    lament(Z) and wail,
for the fierce anger(AA) of the Lord
    has not turned away from us.

9 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
    “the king and the officials will lose heart,(AB)
the priests will be horrified,
    and the prophets will be appalled.”(AC)

10 Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived(AD) this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’(AE) when the sword is at our throats!”

11 At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind(AF) from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse; 12 a wind(AG) too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments(AH) against them.”

13 Look! He advances like the clouds,(AI)
    his chariots(AJ) come like a whirlwind,(AK)
his horses(AL) are swifter than eagles.(AM)
    Woe to us! We are ruined!(AN)
14 Jerusalem, wash(AO) the evil from your heart and be saved.(AP)
    How long(AQ) will you harbor wicked thoughts?
15 A voice is announcing from Dan,(AR)
    proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.(AS)
16 “Tell this to the nations,
    proclaim concerning Jerusalem:
‘A besieging army is coming from a distant land,(AT)
    raising a war cry(AU) against the cities of Judah.(AV)
17 They surround(AW) her like men guarding a field,
    because she has rebelled(AX) against me,’”
declares the Lord.
18 “Your own conduct and actions(AY)
    have brought this on you.(AZ)
This is your punishment.
    How bitter(BA) it is!
    How it pierces to the heart!”

19 Oh, my anguish, my anguish!(BB)
    I writhe in pain.(BC)
Oh, the agony of my heart!
    My heart pounds(BD) within me,
    I cannot keep silent.(BE)
For I have heard the sound of the trumpet;(BF)
    I have heard the battle cry.(BG)
20 Disaster follows disaster;(BH)
    the whole land lies in ruins.(BI)
In an instant my tents(BJ) are destroyed,
    my shelter in a moment.
21 How long must I see the battle standard(BK)
    and hear the sound of the trumpet?(BL)

22 “My people are fools;(BM)
    they do not know me.(BN)
They are senseless children;
    they have no understanding.(BO)
They are skilled in doing evil;(BP)
    they know not how to do good.”(BQ)

23 I looked at the earth,
    and it was formless and empty;(BR)
and at the heavens,
    and their light(BS) was gone.
24 I looked at the mountains,
    and they were quaking;(BT)
    all the hills were swaying.
25 I looked, and there were no people;
    every bird in the sky had flown away.(BU)
26 I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;(BV)
    all its towns lay in ruins(BW)
    before the Lord, before his fierce anger.(BX)

27 This is what the Lord says:

“The whole land will be ruined,(BY)
    though I will not destroy(BZ) it completely.
28 Therefore the earth will mourn(CA)
    and the heavens above grow dark,(CB)
because I have spoken and will not relent,(CC)
    I have decided and will not turn back.(CD)”

29 At the sound of horsemen and archers(CE)
    every town takes to flight.(CF)
Some go into the thickets;
    some climb up among the rocks.(CG)
All the towns are deserted;(CH)
    no one lives in them.

30 What are you doing,(CI) you devastated one?
    Why dress yourself in scarlet
    and put on jewels(CJ) of gold?
Why highlight your eyes with makeup?(CK)
    You adorn yourself in vain.
Your lovers(CL) despise you;
    they want to kill you.(CM)

31 I hear a cry as of a woman in labor,(CN)
    a groan as of one bearing her first child—
the cry of Daughter Zion(CO) gasping for breath,(CP)
    stretching out her hands(CQ) and saying,
“Alas! I am fainting;
    my life is given over to murderers.”(CR)

Jeremiah Laments over Judah

4 “If you will return, O Israel,” says the Lord,
(A)“Return to Me;
And if you will put away your abominations out of My sight,
Then you shall not be moved.
2 (B)And you shall swear, ‘The Lord lives,’
(C)In truth, in [a]judgment, and in righteousness;
(D)The nations shall bless themselves in Him,
And in Him they shall (E)glory.”

3 For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:

(F)“Break up your [b]fallow ground,
And (G)do not sow among thorns.
4 (H)Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
And take away the foreskins of your hearts,
You men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Lest My fury come forth like fire,
And burn so that no one can quench it,
Because of the evil of your doings.”

An Imminent Invasion

5 Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem, and say:

(I)“Blow the trumpet in the land;
Cry, ‘Gather together,’
And say, (J)‘Assemble yourselves,
And let us go into the fortified cities.’
6 Set up the [c]standard toward Zion.
Take refuge! Do not delay!
For I will bring disaster from the (K)north,
And great destruction.”

7 (L)The lion has come up from his thicket,
And (M)the destroyer of nations is on his way.
He has gone forth from his place
(N)To make your land desolate.
Your cities will be laid waste,
Without inhabitant.
8 For this, (O)clothe yourself with sackcloth,
Lament and wail.
For the fierce anger of the Lord
Has not turned back from us.

9 “And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord,
“That the heart of the king shall perish,
And the heart of the princes;
The priests shall be astonished,
And the prophets shall wonder.”

10 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God!
(P)Surely You have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem,
(Q)Saying, ‘You shall have peace,’
Whereas the sword reaches to the [d]heart.”

11 At that time it will be said
To this people and to Jerusalem,
(R)“A dry wind of the desolate heights blows in the wilderness
Toward the daughter of My people—
Not to fan or to cleanse—
12 A wind too strong for these will come for Me;
Now (S)I will also speak judgment against them.”

13 “Behold, he shall come up like clouds,
And (T)his chariots like a whirlwind.
(U)His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for we are plundered!”

14 O Jerusalem, (V)wash your heart from wickedness,
That you may be saved.
How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?
15 For a voice declares (W)from Dan
And proclaims [e]affliction from Mount Ephraim:
16 “Make mention to the nations,
Yes, proclaim against Jerusalem,
That watchers come from a (X)far country
And raise their voice against the cities of Judah.
17 (Y)Like keepers of a field they are against her all around,
Because she has been rebellious against Me,” says the Lord.
18 “Your(Z) ways and your doings
Have procured these things for you.
This is your wickedness,
Because it is bitter,
Because it reaches to your heart.”

Sorrow for the Doomed Nation

19 O my (AA)soul, my soul!
I am pained in my very heart!
My heart makes a noise in me;
I cannot hold my peace,
Because you have heard, O my soul,
The sound of the trumpet,
The alarm of war.
20 (AB)Destruction upon destruction is cried,
For the whole land is plundered.
Suddenly (AC)my tents are plundered,
And my curtains in a moment.
21 How long will I see the [f]standard,
And hear the sound of the trumpet?

22 “For My people are foolish,
They have not known Me.
They are [g]silly children,
And they have no understanding.
(AD)They are wise to do evil,
But to do good they have no knowledge.”

23 (AE)I beheld the earth, and indeed it was (AF)without form, and void;
And the heavens, they had no light.
24 (AG)I beheld the mountains, and indeed they trembled,
And all the hills moved back and forth.
25 I beheld, and indeed there was no man,
And (AH)all the birds of the heavens had fled.
26 I beheld, and indeed the fruitful land was a (AI)wilderness,
And all its cities were broken down
At the presence of the Lord,
By His fierce anger.

27 For thus says the Lord:

“The whole land shall be desolate;
(AJ)Yet I will not make a full end.
28 For this (AK)shall the earth mourn,
And (AL)the heavens above be black,
Because I have spoken.
I have (AM)purposed and (AN)will not relent,
Nor will I turn back from it.
29 The whole city shall flee from the noise of the horsemen and bowmen.
They shall go into thickets and climb up on the rocks.
Every city shall be forsaken,
And not a man shall dwell in it.

30 “And when you are plundered,
What will you do?
Though you clothe yourself with crimson,
Though you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold,
(AO)Though you enlarge your eyes with paint,
In vain you will make yourself fair;
(AP)Your lovers will despise you;
They will seek your life.

31 “For I have heard a voice as of a woman in [h]labor,
The anguish as of her who brings forth her first child,
The voice of the daughter of Zion bewailing herself;
She (AQ)spreads her hands, saying,
‘Woe is me now, for my soul is [i]weary
Because of murderers!’
