4 «Israel, si piensas volver,
vuélvete a mí
—afirma el Señor—.
Si quitas de mi vista tus ídolos abominables
y no te alejas de mí,
2 si con fidelidad, justicia y rectitud
juras: “Por la vida del Señor”,
entonces “en él serán benditas las naciones,
y en él se gloriarán”».
3 Así dice el Señor
a los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén:
«Abrid surcos en terrenos no labrados,
y no sembréis entre espinos.
4 Habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén,
marcad vuestro corazón con la señal del pacto:
circuncidaos para honrar al Señor,
no sea que por la maldad de vuestras obras
mi furor se encienda como el fuego
y arda sin que nadie pueda apagarlo.
La amenaza del norte
5 »¡Anunciadlo en Judá,
proclamadlo en Jerusalén!
¡Tocad la trompeta por todo el país!
Gritad en voz alta:
“¡Reuníos y entremos
en las ciudades fortificadas!”
6 Señalad a Sión con la bandera;
¡Buscad refugio, no os detengáis!
Porque yo traigo del norte
calamidad y gran destrucción.
7 Un león ha salido del matorral,
un destructor de naciones se ha puesto en marcha;
ha salido de su lugar de origen
para desolar tu tierra;
tus ciudades quedarán en ruinas
y totalmente despobladas.
8 Por esto, vestíos de luto,
lamentaos y gemid,
porque la ardiente ira del Señor
no se ha apartado de nosotros.
9 »En aquel día desfallecerá
el corazón del rey y de los jefes;
los sacerdotes se llenarán de pánico
y los profetas quedarán atónitos»,
afirma el Señor.
10 Yo dije: «¡Ah, Señor mi Dios,
cómo has engañado a este pueblo y a Jerusalén!
Dijiste: “Tendrán paz”,
pero tienen la espada en el cuello».
11 En aquel tiempo se les dirá
a este pueblo y a Jerusalén:
«Desde las estériles lomas del desierto
sopla un viento abrasador
en dirección a la capital de mi pueblo.
No es el viento que sirve para aventar
ni para limpiar el trigo;
12 el viento que haré venir
es demasiado fuerte para eso,
porque yo mismo
dictaré sentencia contra ellos».
13 ¡Miradlo avanzar como las nubes!
¡Sus carros de guerra parecen un huracán!
¡Sus caballos son más veloces que las águilas!
¡Ay de nosotros! ¡Estamos perdidos!
14 Jerusalén, limpia de maldad tu corazón
para que seas salvada.
¿Hasta cuándo hallarán lugar en ti
los pensamientos perversos?
15 Una voz anuncia desgracia
desde Dan y desde las colinas de Efraín.
16 «Advertid a las naciones,
proclamadlo contra Jerusalén:
“De lejanas tierras vienen sitiadores
lanzando gritos de guerra
contra las ciudades de Judá”.
17 La rodean como quien cuida un campo,
porque ella se rebeló contra mí
—afirma el Señor—.
18 Tu conducta y tus acciones
te han causado todo esto.
Esta es tu desgracia. ¡Qué amarga es!
¡Cómo te ha calado en el propio corazón!»
19 ¡Qué angustia, qué angustia!
¡Me retuerzo de dolor!
Mi corazón se agita. ¡Ay, corazón mío!
¡No puedo callarme!
Puedo escuchar el toque de trompeta
y el grito de guerra.
20 Un desastre llama a otro desastre;
todo el país está devastado.
De repente fueron destruidos
los pabellones y las tiendas donde habito.
21 ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que ver la bandera
y escuchar el toque de la trompeta?
22 «Mi pueblo es necio,
no me conoce;
son hijos insensatos
que no tienen entendimiento.
Son hábiles para hacer el mal;
no saben hacer el bien».
23 Miré a la tierra, y era un caos total;
miré a los cielos, y todo era tinieblas.
24 Miré a las montañas, y estaban temblando;
¡se sacudían todas las colinas!
25 Miré, y no quedaba nadie;
habían huido todas las aves del cielo.
26 Miré, y la tierra fértil era un desierto;
yacían en ruinas todas las ciudades,
por la acción del Señor,
por causa de su ardiente ira.
27 Así dice el Señor:
«Todo el país quedará desolado,
pero no lo destruiré por completo.
28 Por eso el país estará de luto,
y los altos cielos se oscurecerán,
pues ya lo dije, y no me retractaré;
lo he decidido, y no me volveré atrás».
29 Ante el ruido de arqueros y jinetes
huye toda la ciudad.
Algunos se meten en los matorrales,
otros trepan por los peñascos.
Toda la ciudad queda abandonada;
¡no queda un solo habitante!
30 ¿Qué piensas hacer, ciudad devastada?
¿Para qué te vistes de púrpura?
¿Para qué te pones joyas de oro?
¿Para qué te maquillas los ojos?
En vano te embelleces,
pues tus amantes te desprecian;
solo buscan tu muerte.
31 Oigo gritos como de parturienta,
gemidos como de primeriza.
Son los gemidos de la bella Sión,
que respira con dificultad;
que extiende los brazos y dice:
«¡Ay de mí, que desfallezco!
¡Estoy en manos de asesinos!»

«Israelitas, si piensan volver,
dejen de pecar.
Desháganse de esos ídolos asquerosos,
y no se aparten de mí.
2 Cuando juren en mi nombre,
sean sinceros y justos
conmigo y con los demás.
Así, por amor a ustedes
bendeciré a todas las naciones,
y ellas me cantarán alabanzas».
Peligro en el norte
3-4 Dios les dijo a los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén:
«Preparen su corazón
para recibir mi mensaje.
Cumplan el pacto que hice con ustedes,
pero cúmplanlo en verdad.
Mi mensaje es como una semilla;
¡no la siembren entre espinos!
Si siguen haciendo lo malo,
mi enojo se encenderá como un fuego
y nadie podrá apagarlo.
5 »¡Anuncien esto a gritos
en Judá y en todo Jerusalén!
¡Hagan sonar la trompeta por todo el país!
¡Avisen a la gente
que corra a protegerse
dentro de las ciudades amuralladas!
6 ¡Vamos, no pierdan tiempo!
¡Corran y pónganse a salvo!
¡Agiten la bandera
en dirección a Jerusalén!
»Yo estoy por mandar desde el norte
la más terrible destrucción.
7 Ya está en marcha un ejército.
Ha salido para destruir naciones,
y también destruirá su país.
Los atacará como si fuera un león
que sale de su cueva.
Las ciudades quedarán en ruinas,
y nadie podrá vivir en ellas.
8 Vístanse con ropa vieja y áspera,
y lloren y griten de dolor,
porque yo sigo enojado con ustedes.
9 »Cuando llegue ese día,
el rey y los gobernantes
se asustarán y temblarán de miedo
y también los sacerdotes y los profetas.
Les juro que así será».
10 Yo, Jeremías, dije:
«Poderoso Dios de Israel,
¿por qué has engañado
a los que viven en Jerusalén?
¿Por qué les prometiste
que vivirían en paz,
cuando en realidad viven
en constante peligro de muerte?»
11 Y Dios contestó:
«Cuando llegue el día del castigo,
se le dirá a este pueblo de Jerusalén:
“Desde los áridos cerros del desierto
sopla un viento muy caluroso,
y se dirige a Jerusalén,
la capital de nuestro pueblo”.
No se tratará de la suave brisa
que limpia de paja el trigo;
12 el viento que yo haré soplar
será mucho más fuerte.
Ahora mismo dictaré
sentencia contra ellos.
13 »Entonces dirán los israelitas:
“¡Miren cómo avanza el enemigo!
¡Parece el nubarrón de una tormenta!
Sus carros y sus caballos de guerra
son más veloces que las águilas;
¡hasta parecen un huracán!
¿Qué será de nosotros?
¡No tenemos escapatoria!”
14 »Pero yo responderé:
“Jerusalén, todavía puedes salvarte.
Sólo tienes que quitarte de la mente
todos esos malos pensamientos.
¿Hasta cuándo vas a dejar
que esos pensamientos te dominen?”
15 »Ya se anuncia la desgracia
desde la ciudad de Dan
y desde los montes de Efraín.
16 Avisen a las naciones,
y adviértanle también a Jerusalén,
que de una tierra lejana
vienen los invasores.
Lanzan gritos de guerra
contra las ciudades de Judá,
17 y las rodearán por completo,
porque ellas se rebelaron contra mí.
Les juro que así será.
18 »Jerusalén, todo esto te pasa
por tu mal comportamiento.
Tu desgracia es tan amarga,
que te hiere el corazón».
Queja de Jeremías
19 «¡No aguanto más este dolor!
¡Mi corazón está por estallar!
¡Estoy tan agitado
que no puedo quedarme callado!
Ya escucho el sonido de la trompeta;
ya oigo los gritos de batalla.
20 Tras un desastre viene otro,
y el país va quedando en ruinas.
De repente me he quedado sin casa,
pues mis campamentos fueron destruidos.
21 Sólo veo banderas enemigas
y escucho sus trompetas victoriosas.
¿Hasta cuándo tendré que soportarlo?
22 »Dios dice que no lo conocemos;
que somos hijos necios
que no entendemos nada;
que somos hábiles para hacer lo malo,
pero incapaces de hacer lo bueno.
23 »Veo la tierra:
no tiene forma ni vida;
miro el cielo, y todo es oscuridad.
24 Las montañas tiemblan,
las colinas se estremecen.
25 Me fijo, y no veo a nadie;
todas las aves del cielo se han ido.
26 La tierra que antes era fértil
ahora parece un desierto.
¡Todas las ciudades están en ruinas!
Dios, en su terrible enojo,
hizo que todo esto sucediera».
Destrucción de Jerusalén
27 Dios dice:
«Toda la nación será destruida,
pero no la destruiré por completo.
28 Todo el país se pondrá muy triste,
y el cielo se cubrirá de tinieblas.
Ya he tomado una decisión,
y no voy a cambiarla;
ya lo he resuelto,
y no pienso dar marcha atrás.
29 »Cuando escuchen el ruido
de los soldados y sus caballos,
toda la gente saldrá corriendo;
algunos se meterán en el monte,
otros treparán por las rocas,
y todas las ciudades quedarán abandonadas.
¡No quedará en ellas un solo habitante!
30 »¿En qué piensan ustedes,
habitantes de Jerusalén?
Su ciudad está en ruinas,
y ustedes la visten con ropa fina.
¿Para qué le ponen joyas de oro?
¿Para qué la maquillan,
si Egipto y Asiria la han traicionado
y lo único que buscan es su muerte?»
Habla el profeta
31 «Escucho gritos de dolor.
¿Será acaso una mujer
dando a luz por primera vez?
No, no es eso;
son los gritos de Jerusalén
que ya no puede respirar,
y a gritos pide ayuda.
Con los brazos extendidos, dice:
“¡Me estoy muriendo!
¡He caído en manos de asesinos!”»

4 If you return, Israel, return to me, declares the Lord.
If you get rid of your disgusting idols from my presence
and wander no more,
2 and if you swear by the living God
in truth, justice, and righteousness,
then the nations will enjoy God’s blessings;[a]
they will boast about him.
3 This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to the residents of Jerusalem:
Break up your hard rocky soil;
don’t plant among the thorns.
4 Dedicate[b] yourselves to the Lord;
don’t be thick-skinned,[c]
people of Judah and residents of Jerusalem,
or else my anger will spread like a wildfire.
It will burn, with no one to put it out,
because of your evil deeds.
Disaster approaches
5 Announce in Judah,
in Jerusalem proclaim,
sound the alarm throughout the land,
cry out and say,
“Gather together!
Let’s flee to the fortified towns!”
6 Set up a flag to Zion;
take cover, don’t just stand there!
I’m bringing disaster from the north,
massive devastation.
7 A lion bursts out of the thicket;
a destroyer of nations advances.
He’s gone forth from his place
to ravage your land,
to wipe out your towns,
until no one is left.
8 So put on funeral clothing.
Weep and wail,
for the Lord’s fierce anger
hasn’t turned away from us.
9 On that day, declares the Lord,
the courage of the king and his princes will fail,
the priests will be stunned,
and the prophets will be shocked.
10 Then I said, “Lord God, no!
You have utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem
by promising them peace
even though the sword is at their throats.”
11 At that time, this people and Jerusalem will be told:
A blistering wind from the bare heights;
it rages in the desert toward my people,
not merely to winnow or cleanse.
12 This wind is too devastating for that.
Now I, even I, will pronounce my sentence against them.
13 Look! He approaches like the clouds;
his chariots advance like a tempest,
his horses swifter than eagles.
How horrible! We’re doomed!
14 Cleanse your heart of evil, Jerusalem,
that you may be saved.
How long will you entertain your destructive ideas?
15 A voice declares from Dan;
someone proclaims disaster from the highlands of Ephraim.
16 Warn the nations,
proclaim it to Jerusalem!
Armies are approaching from a far-away country,
raising their war cries against the towns of Judah.
17 They hem her in like those guarding a field,
because she has rebelled against me,
declares the Lord.
18 Your own conduct, your own deeds have done this to you.
This is your payment and how bitter it is,
piercing into the depths of your heart.
Anguish over looming disaster
19 Oh, my suffering, my suffering!
My pain is unbearable;
my heart is in turmoil;
it throbs nonstop.
I can’t be silent, because I hear the blast of the trumpet
and the roar of the battle cry!
20 Disaster follows disaster;
the whole land is ruined.
Suddenly, my tents are destroyed,
my shelter in a moment.
21 How long must I see the battle flags
and hear the blast of the trumpet?
22 My people are foolish.
They don’t even know me!
They are thoughtless children
without understanding;
they are skilled at doing wrong,
inept at doing right.
23 I looked at the earth,
and it was without shape or form;
at the heavens
and there was no light.
24 I looked at the mountains
and they were quaking;
all the hills were rocking back and forth.
25 I looked and there was no one left;
every bird in the sky had taken flight.
26 I looked and the fertile land was a desert;
all its towns were in ruins
before the Lord,
before his fury.
27 The Lord proclaims:
The whole earth will become a desolation,
but I will not destroy it completely.
28 Therefore, the earth will grieve
and the heavens grow dark
because I have declared my plan
and will neither change my mind
nor cancel the plan.
29 As the horsemen and archers approach,
the people take flight.
They hide in the bushes
and escape to the cliffs.
Every city is deserted;
no one remains.
30 And you, devastated one,
why dress up in scarlet,
deck yourself in gold jewelry,
and color your eyes with paint?
In vain you get all decked out;
your lovers have rejected you
and now seek your life.
31 I hear the cry of a woman in labor,
the distress of one delivering her first child.
It is the cry of Daughter Zion,
gasping for breath,
her arms stretched out,
and moaning,
“I’m about to fall into the hands of murderers!”

4 If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the Lord, return unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove.
2 And thou shalt swear, The Lord liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.
3 For thus saith the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
5 Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities.
6 Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.
7 The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
8 For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the Lord is not turned back from us.
9 And it shall come to pass at that day, saith the Lord, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.
10 Then said I, Ah, Lord God! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.
11 At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,
12 Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them.
13 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
14 O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?
15 For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.
16 Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.
17 As keepers of a field, are they against her round about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the Lord.
18 Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.
19 My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
20 Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.
21 How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
22 For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.
25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.
26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce anger.
27 For thus hath the Lord said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.
28 For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.
29 The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.
30 And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.
31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.

4 “If you, Israel, will return,(A)
then return to me,”
declares the Lord.
“If you put your detestable idols(B) out of my sight
and no longer go astray,
2 and if in a truthful, just and righteous way
you swear,(C) ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’(D)
then the nations will invoke blessings(E) by him
and in him they will boast.(F)”
3 This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem:
“Break up your unplowed ground(G)
and do not sow among thorns.(H)
4 Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
circumcise your hearts,(I)
you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
or my wrath(J) will flare up and burn like fire(K)
because of the evil(L) you have done—
burn with no one to quench(M) it.
Disaster From the North
5 “Announce in Judah and proclaim(N) in Jerusalem and say:
‘Sound the trumpet(O) throughout the land!’
Cry aloud and say:
‘Gather together!
Let us flee to the fortified cities!’(P)
6 Raise the signal(Q) to go to Zion!
Flee for safety without delay!
For I am bringing disaster(R) from the north,(S)
even terrible destruction.”
7 A lion(T) has come out of his lair;(U)
a destroyer(V) of nations has set out.
He has left his place
to lay waste(W) your land.
Your towns will lie in ruins(X)
without inhabitant.
8 So put on sackcloth,(Y)
lament(Z) and wail,
for the fierce anger(AA) of the Lord
has not turned away from us.
9 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
“the king and the officials will lose heart,(AB)
the priests will be horrified,
and the prophets will be appalled.”(AC)
10 Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived(AD) this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’(AE) when the sword is at our throats!”
11 At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind(AF) from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse; 12 a wind(AG) too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments(AH) against them.”
13 Look! He advances like the clouds,(AI)
his chariots(AJ) come like a whirlwind,(AK)
his horses(AL) are swifter than eagles.(AM)
Woe to us! We are ruined!(AN)
14 Jerusalem, wash(AO) the evil from your heart and be saved.(AP)
How long(AQ) will you harbor wicked thoughts?
15 A voice is announcing from Dan,(AR)
proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.(AS)
16 “Tell this to the nations,
proclaim concerning Jerusalem:
‘A besieging army is coming from a distant land,(AT)
raising a war cry(AU) against the cities of Judah.(AV)
17 They surround(AW) her like men guarding a field,
because she has rebelled(AX) against me,’”
declares the Lord.
18 “Your own conduct and actions(AY)
have brought this on you.(AZ)
This is your punishment.
How bitter(BA) it is!
How it pierces to the heart!”
19 Oh, my anguish, my anguish!(BB)
I writhe in pain.(BC)
Oh, the agony of my heart!
My heart pounds(BD) within me,
I cannot keep silent.(BE)
For I have heard the sound of the trumpet;(BF)
I have heard the battle cry.(BG)
20 Disaster follows disaster;(BH)
the whole land lies in ruins.(BI)
In an instant my tents(BJ) are destroyed,
my shelter in a moment.
21 How long must I see the battle standard(BK)
and hear the sound of the trumpet?(BL)
22 “My people are fools;(BM)
they do not know me.(BN)
They are senseless children;
they have no understanding.(BO)
They are skilled in doing evil;(BP)
they know not how to do good.”(BQ)
23 I looked at the earth,
and it was formless and empty;(BR)
and at the heavens,
and their light(BS) was gone.
24 I looked at the mountains,
and they were quaking;(BT)
all the hills were swaying.
25 I looked, and there were no people;
every bird in the sky had flown away.(BU)
26 I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;(BV)
all its towns lay in ruins(BW)
before the Lord, before his fierce anger.(BX)
27 This is what the Lord says:
“The whole land will be ruined,(BY)
though I will not destroy(BZ) it completely.
28 Therefore the earth will mourn(CA)
and the heavens above grow dark,(CB)
because I have spoken and will not relent,(CC)
I have decided and will not turn back.(CD)”
29 At the sound of horsemen and archers(CE)
every town takes to flight.(CF)
Some go into the thickets;
some climb up among the rocks.(CG)
All the towns are deserted;(CH)
no one lives in them.
