39 En el mes décimo del año noveno del reinado de Sedequías en Judá, el rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia vino a Jerusalén con todo su ejército, y sitió la ciudad. 2 A los nueve días del mes cuarto del año undécimo del reinado de Sedequías, se abrió una brecha en la muralla de la ciudad, 3 por la que entraron todos los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, es decir, Nergal Sarézer, Samgar Nebo, Sarsequín el Rabsaris, Nergal Sarézer el Rabmag, y todos los demás príncipes del rey de Babilonia, y acamparon en la puerta central. 4 Cuando los vieron el rey Sedequías de Judá y todos sus soldados, huyeron de noche. Salieron de la ciudad por el camino del jardín real, por la puerta entre las dos murallas, y el rey salió por el camino del Arabá. 5 Pero el ejército caldeo los siguió, y alcanzaron y apresaron a Sedequías en los llanos de Jericó. Entonces lo llevaron a Ribla, en tierra de Jamat, donde se encontraba el rey Nabucodonosor de Babilonia, y éste le dictó sentencia. 6 Allí en Ribla, el rey de Babilonia mandó degollar en presencia de Sedequías a los hijos de éste, lo mismo que a todos los nobles de Judá. 7 Al rey Sedequías le sacó los ojos, y se lo llevó a Babilonia sujeto con grilletes. 8 Los caldeos les prendieron fuego al palacio del rey y a las casas del pueblo, y derribaron las murallas de Jerusalén. 9 A los que quedaron con vida en la ciudad, y a los que se habían pasado a su bando, y a todos los sobrevivientes del pueblo, Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, los llevó cautivos a Babilonia. 10 Sin embargo, el capitán Nabuzaradán dejó en Judá a la gente pobre, que no tenía nada, y les dio viñas y terrenos.
Nabucodonosor cuida de Jeremías
11 En cuanto a Jeremías, Nabucodonosor le había dado a Nabuzaradán las siguientes instrucciones: 12 «Tómalo y cuida de él. No le hagas ningún daño. Más bien, haz con él lo que yo te diga.»
13 Fue así como Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, y Nabusazbán el Rabsaris, Nergal Sarézer el Rabmag, y todos los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, 14 ordenaron sacar a Jeremías del patio de la cárcel, para entregárselo a Gedalías hijo de Ajicán, hijo de Safán, quien se lo llevó a su casa. Así Jeremías se quedó a vivir entre el pueblo.
Dios promete salvar a Ébed Mélec
15 Mientras Jeremías estaba preso en el patio de la cárcel, la palabra del Señor vino a él, y le dijo:
16 «Ve y habla con Ébed Mélec, el etíope, y dile de mi parte: “Yo, el Señor de los ejércitos y Dios de Israel, te hago saber que voy a traer sobre esta ciudad todo lo que ya he anunciado. Será para su mal, y no para su bien. Cuando eso suceda, tú mismo serás testigo. 17 Pero yo te pondré a salvo, y no caerás en manos de esa gente, a la que temes.
—Palabra del Señor.
18 ”Yo te libraré. No morirás a filo de espada, sino que tu vida será tu botín de guerra, porque tuviste confianza en mí.”»

39 1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah(A) king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army and laid siege(C) to it. 2 And on the ninth day of the fourth(D) month of Zedekiah’s eleventh year, the city wall(E) was broken through.(F) 3 Then all the officials(G) of the king of Babylon came and took seats in the Middle Gate: Nergal-Sharezer of Samgar, Nebo-Sarsekim a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officials of the king of Babylon. 4 When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled; they left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls,(H) and headed toward the Arabah.[a](I)
5 But the Babylonian[b] army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah(J) in the plains of Jericho. They captured(K) him and took him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah(L) in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced sentence on him. 6 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and also killed all the nobles(M) of Judah. 7 Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes(N) and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.(O)
8 The Babylonians[c] set fire(P) to the royal palace and the houses of the people and broke down the walls(Q) of Jerusalem. 9 Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard carried into exile to Babylon the people who remained in the city, along with those who had gone over to him,(R) and the rest of the people.(S) 10 But Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people, who owned nothing; and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields.
11 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given these orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard: 12 “Take him and look after him; don’t harm(T) him but do for him whatever he asks.” 13 So Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard, Nebushazban a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officers(U) of the king of Babylon 14 sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard.(V) They turned him over to Gedaliah(W) son of Ahikam,(X) the son of Shaphan,(Y) to take him back to his home. So he remained among his own people.(Z)
15 While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him: 16 “Go and tell Ebed-Melek(AA) the Cushite, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words(AB) against this city—words concerning disaster,(AC) not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes. 17 But I will rescue(AD) you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear. 18 I will save(AE) you; you will not fall by the sword(AF) but will escape with your life,(AG) because you trust(AH) in me, declares the Lord.’”

39 (A)In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, a breach was made in the city. 3 Then all (B)the officials of the king of Babylon came (C)and sat in the middle gate: Nergal-sar-ezer of Samgar, Nebu-sar-sekim (D)the Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag, with all the rest of the officers of the king of Babylon. 4 When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled, going out of the city at night by way of the king's garden through the gate between the two walls; and they went toward (E)the Arabah. 5 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in (F)the plains of Jericho. And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, at (G)Riblah, in the land of Hamath; (H)and he passed sentence on him. 6 The king of Babylon (I)slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah at (J)Riblah before his eyes, and the king of Babylon (K)slaughtered all the nobles of Judah. 7 (L)He put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in chains to take him to Babylon. 8 (M)The Chaldeans burned the king's house and the house of the people, (N)and broke down the walls of Jerusalem. 9 Then (O)Nebuzaradan, the (P)captain of the guard, carried into exile to Babylon the rest of the people who were left in the city, (Q)those who had deserted to him, and the people who remained. 10 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, (R)left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.
The Lord Delivers Jeremiah
11 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave command concerning Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, saying, 12 (S)“Take him, look after him well, and do him no harm, but deal with him as he tells you.” 13 So (T)Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, Nebushazban the Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag, (U)and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon 14 sent and took Jeremiah from (V)the court of the guard. They entrusted him to (W)Gedaliah the son of (X)Ahikam, son of (Y)Shaphan, that he should take him home. So (Z)he lived among the people.
15 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah (AA)while he was shut up in the court of the guard: 16 “Go, and say to (AB)Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (AC)Behold, I will fulfill my words against this city for harm and (AD)not for good, and they shall be accomplished before you on that day. 17 But I will deliver you on that day, declares the Lord, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men (AE)of whom you are afraid. 18 For I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword, but you shall have your (AF)life as a prize of war, (AG)because you have put your trust in me, declares the Lord.’”
