Profecía contra Sedequías
34 Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor, cuando Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y todo su ejército y todos los reinos de la tierra que estaban bajo su dominio y todos los pueblos(A) peleaban contra Jerusalén y contra todas sus ciudades(B), diciendo: 2 Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: «Ve y habla a Sedequías, rey de Judá, y dile: “Así dice el Señor(C): ‘He aquí, yo entrego esta ciudad en manos del rey de Babilonia, y él le prenderá fuego(D). 3 +’Y tú no escaparás de su mano, sino que ciertamente serás capturado y entregado en su mano; tus ojos verán los ojos del rey de Babilonia, y él te hablará cara a cara[a](E), y a Babilonia irás(F)’”». 4 Sin embargo, oye la palabra del Señor, oh Sedequías, rey de Judá. Así dice el Señor acerca de ti: «No morirás a espada; 5 en paz morirás. Como quemaron especias por tus padres, los reyes anteriores que te precedieron, así quemarán especias por ti(G), y con “¡Ay, señor!” harán lamento por ti»: Porque yo he hablado la palabra —declara el Señor(H).
6 Entonces habló el profeta Jeremías a Sedequías, rey de Judá, todas estas palabras(I) en Jerusalén 7 mientras el ejército del rey de Babilonia peleaba contra Jerusalén y contra todas las ciudades que quedaban en Judá, es decir, Laquis(J) y Azeca(K), pues solo estas quedaban como ciudades fortificadas entre las ciudades de Judá(L).
8 Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor, después que el rey Sedequías había hecho un pacto con todo el pueblo(M) que había en Jerusalén para proclamarles libertad(N): 9 que cada uno debía poner en libertad a su siervo y a su sierva hebreos(O), para que nadie retuviera a un judío, hermano suyo, en servidumbre(P). 10 Y obedecieron todos los oficiales y todo el pueblo(Q) que habían entrado en el pacto, de que cada uno dejara en libertad a su siervo y cada uno a su sierva, de modo que nadie los mantuviera más en servidumbre; obedecieron y los pusieron en libertad. 11 Pero después se arrepintieron y volvieron a tomar a los siervos y a las siervas a quienes habían dejado en libertad, y los redujeron a servidumbre como siervos y como siervas.
12 Entonces vino la palabra del Señor a Jeremías[b], diciendo: 13 Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: «Yo hice un pacto con vuestros padres el día que los saqué de la tierra de Egipto, de la casa de servidumbre[c](R), diciendo: 14 “Al cabo de siete años cada uno de vosotros pondrá en libertad al hermano hebreo que le[d] fue vendido[e] y que le[f] ha servido por seis años, y lo enviará libre de junto a sí[g](S); pero vuestros padres no me escucharon(T), ni inclinaron su oído. 15 Aunque recientemente os habíais arrepentido y habíais hecho lo que es recto ante mis ojos, cada uno proclamando libertad(U) a su prójimo, habiendo hecho un pacto delante de mí(V) en la casa que es llamada por mi nombre(W), 16 ahora[h] os habéis vuelto atrás y profanado mi nombre(X), y cada uno ha tomado de nuevo[i] a su siervo y cada uno a su sierva, a quienes habíais dejado libres según su deseo, y los habéis reducido a servidumbre como siervos y como siervas(Y)”».
17 Por tanto, así dice el Señor: «Vosotros no me habéis obedecido(Z) proclamando libertad cada uno a su hermano y cada uno a su prójimo. He aquí, proclamo contra vosotros libertad» —declara el Señor— «a la espada, a la pestilencia y al hambre(AA); y haré de vosotros motivo de espanto para todos los reinos de la tierra(AB). 18 Y entregaré a los hombres que han transgredido mi pacto, que no han cumplido las palabras del pacto que hicieron delante de mí(AC), cuando cortaron en dos(AD) el becerro y pasaron entre los pedazos, 19 a los oficiales de Judá, a los oficiales de Jerusalén, a los oficiales de la corte, a los sacerdotes y a todo el pueblo de la tierra(AE) que pasaron entre los pedazos del becerro; 20 y los entregaré en manos de sus enemigos y en manos de los que buscan su vida(AF). Sus cadáveres servirán de comida para las aves del cielo y para las bestias de la tierra(AG). 21 Y a Sedequías, rey de Judá, y a sus oficiales los entregaré en manos de sus enemigos, en manos de los que buscan su vida y en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia(AH), que se ha retirado de vosotros(AI). 22 He aquí, daré órdenes» —declara el Señor— «y los haré volver a esta ciudad, y pelearán contra ella, la tomarán y le prenderán fuego(AJ); y haré de las ciudades de Judá una desolación sin habitantes(AK)».

Mensaje al rey Sedequías
34 Cuando Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, con todo su ejército formado por gente de todas las naciones de la tierra sometidas a él, estaba atacando Jerusalén y todas las ciudades vecinas, el Señor se dirigió a Jeremías, y le dijo: 2 «Yo, el Señor, el Dios de Israel, te ordeno que vayas a decirle a Sedequías, rey de Judá: “Así dice el Señor: Voy a hacer que el rey de Babilonia se apodere de esta ciudad y le prenda fuego. 3 Tú no podrás escapar de caer en sus manos; te capturarán y te entregarán a él, y después de que te hayan llevado ante su presencia, serás llevado a Babilonia. 4 Con todo, escucha, Sedequías, rey de Judá, lo que yo, el Señor, te voy a decir: No morirás a filo de espada. 5 Morirás en paz, y quemarán perfumes en tus funerales, como los quemaron en los funerales de tus antepasados que reinaron antes de ti, y dirán: ¡Ay, señor!, haciendo lamentación por ti. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo y doy mi palabra.”»
6 El profeta Jeremías repitió todo esto al rey Sedequías en Jerusalén. 7 Entre tanto, el ejército del rey de Babilonia estaba atacando Jerusalén, Laquis y Azecá, las únicas ciudades fortificadas de Judá que aún quedaban.
Violación de la alianza de libertar a los esclavos hebreos
8 El Señor se dirigió a Jeremías, después que el rey Sedequías hizo un pacto con todos los habitantes de Jerusalén para dejar libres a los esclavos. 9 El pacto establecía que los que tuvieran esclavos o esclavas hebreos los dejaran en libertad, para que nadie tuviera como esclavo a un compatriota judío. 10 Todos los jefes y todo el pueblo aceptaron los términos del pacto, y dejaron libres a sus esclavos y no los obligaron más a servirles. 11 Pero después se arrepintieron de haberles dado libertad, y los obligaron a volver y a servirles de nuevo como esclavos.
12 Entonces el Señor se dirigió a Jeremías, y le dijo: 13 «Yo, el Señor, el Dios de Israel, hice una alianza con los antepasados de ustedes cuando los saqué de Egipto, donde servían como esclavos. Les ordené 14 que cada siete años dejaran libre a cualquier hebreo que se hubiera vendido a ellos y que les hubiera servido durante seis años. Pero sus antepasados no me hicieron caso ni me obedecieron. 15 Ahora ustedes habían cambiado de conducta, y habían hecho lo que a mí me agrada, al dejar en libertad a sus compatriotas esclavos. Y se comprometieron con una alianza hecho en mi presencia, en el templo que está dedicado a mí. 16 Pero después cambiaron de parecer y, profanando mi nombre, obligaron a los esclavos que habían dejado en libertad a volver y servirles de nuevo como esclavos. 17 Así pues, yo, el Señor, digo: Ustedes no me obedecieron, puesto que no dejaron en libertad a sus compatriotas esclavos; por lo tanto, ahora yo voy a dejar en libertad a la guerra, la peste y el hambre, para que hagan con ustedes algo que cause horror a todos los reinos de la tierra. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo. 18-19 Los jefes de Judá y de Jerusalén, junto con los criados del palacio, los sacerdotes y todos los demás ciudadanos hicieron una alianza en mi presencia: partieron en dos un becerro y pasaron por entre las dos partes. Pero luego violaron la alianza y faltaron a su compromiso. 20 Por lo tanto, haré que ellos caigan en poder de sus enemigos mortales, y que sus cadáveres sirvan de comida a las aves de rapiña y a las fieras. 21 También haré que Sedequías, rey de Judá, y sus oficiales caigan en poder de sus enemigos mortales, en poder del ejército del rey de Babilonia, que ahora ha dejado de atacarles. 22 Voy a ordenarles que vuelvan contra esta ciudad y que la ataquen, que la tomen y le prendan fuego. Y haré que las demás ciudades de Judá queden desiertas y sin ningún habitante. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.»

Warning to Zedekiah
34 While Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms and peoples(A) in the empire he ruled were fighting against Jerusalem(B) and all its surrounding towns, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Go to Zedekiah(C) king of Judah and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.(D) 3 You will not escape from his grasp but will surely be captured and given into his hands.(E) You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will speak with you face to face. And you will go to Babylon.
4 “‘Yet hear the Lord’s promise to you, Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the Lord says concerning you: You will not die by the sword;(F) 5 you will die peacefully. As people made a funeral fire(G) in honor of your predecessors, the kings who ruled before you, so they will make a fire in your honor and lament, “Alas,(H) master!” I myself make this promise, declares the Lord.’”
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet told all this to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem, 7 while the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah that were still holding out—Lachish(I) and Azekah.(J) These were the only fortified cities left in Judah.
Freedom for Slaves
8 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people(K) in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom(L) for the slaves. 9 Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and female; no one was to hold a fellow Hebrew in bondage.(M) 10 So all the officials and people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their male and female slaves and no longer hold them in bondage. They agreed, and set them free. 11 But afterward they changed their minds(N) and took back the slaves they had freed and enslaved them again.
12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13 “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors(O) when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.(P) I said, 14 ‘Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you six years, you must let them go free.’[a](Q) Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention(R) to me. 15 Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people.(S) You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name.(T) 16 But now you have turned around(U) and profaned(V) my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.
17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim ‘freedom’ for you,(W) declares the Lord—‘freedom’ to fall by the sword, plague(X) and famine.(Y) I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.(Z) 18 Those who have violated my covenant(AA) and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and then walked between its pieces.(AB) 19 The leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials,(AC) the priests and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf, 20 I will deliver(AD) into the hands of their enemies who want to kill them.(AE) Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.(AF)
21 “I will deliver Zedekiah(AG) king of Judah and his officials(AH) into the hands of their enemies(AI) who want to kill them, to the army of the king of Babylon,(AJ) which has withdrawn(AK) from you. 22 I am going to give the order, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take(AL) it and burn(AM) it down. And I will lay waste(AN) the towns of Judah so no one can live there.”

3 And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.
4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the Lord of thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword:
5 But thou shalt die in peace: and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, so shall they burn odours for thee; and they will lament thee, saying, Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word, saith the Lord.
6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,
7 When the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.
8 This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;
9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother.
10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.
11 But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.
12 Therefore the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
13 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying,
14 At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.
15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name:
16 But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom he had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
19 The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf;
20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.
22 Behold, I will command, saith the Lord, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.
