32 La palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del SEÑOR en el año diez de Sedequías, rey de Judá, que fue el año dieciocho de Nabucodonosor. 2 En aquel entonces el ejército del rey de Babilonia tenía sitiada a Jerusalén. Y el profeta Jeremías estaba preso en el patio de la guardia que estaba en la casa del rey de Judá, 3 porque Sedequías, el rey de Judá, lo había apresado, diciéndole: “¿Por qué profetizas diciendo que así ha dicho el SEÑOR: ‘He aquí, yo entrego esta ciudad en mano del rey de Babilonia, y él la tomará; 4 Sedequías, rey de Judá, no escapará de mano de los caldeos, sino que ciertamente será entregado en mano del rey de Babilonia y hablará con él cara a cara, y sus ojos verán sus ojos; 5 él hará llevar a Sedequías a Babilonia y estará allá hasta que yo lo visite, dice el SEÑOR, y aunque combatan contra los caldeos, no tendrán éxito’?”.

6 Jeremías dijo: Vino a mí la palabra del SEÑOR, diciendo: 7 “He aquí que Hanameel, hijo de tu tío Salum, viene a ti para decir: ‘Compra mi campo que está en Anatot, porque tuyo es el derecho de redención para adquirirlo’”.

8 Y vino a mí Hanameel, hijo de mi tío, al patio de la guardia, conforme a la palabra del SEÑOR, y me dijo: “Compra, por favor, mi campo que está en Anatot, en tierra de Benjamín; porque tuyo es el derecho de posesión, y a ti te corresponde la redención. Cómpralo para ti”. Entonces comprendí que había sido palabra del SEÑOR; 9 y compré el campo de Hanameel, hijo de mi tío, el cual estaba en Anatot. Le pesé el dinero: ciento ochenta y siete gramos de plata. 10 Luego escribí el documento y lo sellé. Convoqué a los testigos y pesé la plata en la balanza. 11 Luego tomé el documento de la compra sellado, con las obligaciones y los términos, y la copia abierta. 12 Entregué el documento de la compra a Baruc hijo de Nerías, hijo de Maasías, en presencia de Hanameel, hijo de mi tío, en presencia de los testigos que habían firmado el documento de la compra y en presencia de todos los judíos que permanecían en el patio de la guardia.

13 Luego mandé a Baruc, en presencia de ellos, diciendo que 14 así ha dicho el SEÑOR de los Ejércitos, Dios de Israel: “Toma estos documentos (el documento de compra sellado y la copia abierta), y ponlos en una vasija de cerámica para que se conserven por mucho tiempo. 15 Porque así ha dicho el SEÑOR de los Ejércitos, Dios de Israel: ‘Todavía se comprarán casas, campos y viñas en esta tierra’”.

16 Después que di el documento de compra a Baruc hijo de Nerías, oré al SEÑOR diciendo: 17 “¡Oh SEÑOR Dios[a]! He aquí que tú has hecho el cielo y la tierra con tu gran poder y con tu brazo extendido. Nada hay que sea difícil para ti. 18 Tú haces misericordia a millares, pero retribuyes la maldad de los padres en el seno de sus hijos después de ellos. ¡Oh Dios grande y poderoso, cuyo nombre es SEÑOR de los Ejércitos! 19 Grande eres en designios y magnífico en hechos, pues tus ojos están abiertos sobre todos los caminos de los hijos del hombre, para dar a cada uno según sus caminos y según el fruto de sus obras. 20 Has hecho señales y prodigios en la tierra de Egipto, y hasta este día en Israel y entre todos los hombres. Así te has hecho de renombre, como en este día. 21 Sacaste a tu pueblo Israel de la tierra de Egipto, con señales y prodigios, con mano poderosa, con brazo extendido y con gran terror. 22 Y les diste esta tierra, de la cual juraste a sus padres que se la darías: una tierra que fluye leche y miel. 23 Ellos entraron y tomaron posesión de ella; pero no escucharon tu voz ni anduvieron en tu ley ni hicieron nada de lo que les mandaste hacer. Por eso has hecho que les ocurriera todo este mal.

24 “He aquí que los terraplenes ya han alcanzado hasta la ciudad para tomarla. La ciudad va a ser entregada en mano de los caldeos que combaten contra ella, a causa de la espada, del hambre y de la peste. Ha llegado a suceder lo que dijiste; y he aquí, tú lo estás viendo. 25 Sin embargo, oh SEÑOR Dios[b], aun cuando la ciudad es entregada en mano de los caldeos, tú me dices: ‘Cómprate el campo por dinero y convoca testigos’ ”.

El Señor promete total restauración

26 Entonces vino la palabra del SEÑOR a Jeremías, diciendo: 27 “He aquí que yo soy el SEÑOR, Dios de todo mortal. ¿Habrá alguna cosa difícil para mí? 28 Por tanto, así ha dicho el SEÑOR: He aquí, yo voy a entregar esta ciudad en mano de los caldeos y en mano de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia; y él la tomará. 29 Vendrán los caldeos que combaten contra esta ciudad, le prenderán fuego y la incendiarán; asimismo, a las casas sobre cuyas azoteas quemaban incienso a Baal y derramaban libaciones a otros dioses, provocándome a ira. 30 Porque los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Judá no han hecho desde su juventud sino lo malo ante mis ojos. Porque los hijos de Israel no han hecho más que provocarme a ira con la obra de sus manos, dice el SEÑOR. 31 Porque esta ciudad me ha provocado a ira e indignación desde el día en que la edificaron y hasta el día de hoy, de manera que la quitaré de mi presencia, 32 por toda la maldad que los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Judá han hecho, provocándome a ira: ellos, sus reyes, sus magistrados, sus sacerdotes, sus profetas, los hombres de Judá y los habitantes de Jerusalén. 33 Ellos me dieron la espalda y no la cara. Y a pesar de que les he enseñado persistentemente, no han escuchado para recibir corrección. 34 Más bien, han puesto sus ídolos abominables en el templo que es llamado por mi nombre, contaminándolo. 35 Han edificado lugares altos a Baal, que están en el valle de Ben-hinom, para hacer pasar por fuego a sus hijos y a sus hijas a Moloc; lo cual no les mandé ni me vino a la mente que hicieran esta abominación, para hacer pecar a Judá”.

36 Ahora pues, así ha dicho el SEÑOR Dios de Israel: “Con todo, en cuanto a esta ciudad de la cual dicen: ‘En mano del rey de Babilonia será entregada por la espada, por el hambre y por la peste’, 37 he aquí que yo los reuniré de todos los países a los cuales los he expulsado en mi furor, con mi ira y con gran indignación. Los haré volver a este lugar y los haré habitar seguros. 38 Ellos serán mi pueblo, y yo seré su Dios. 39 Les daré un solo corazón y un solo camino, a fin de que me teman perpetuamente, para su propio bien y para el bien de sus hijos después de ellos. 40 Haré con ellos un pacto eterno; no desistiré de hacerles bien. Pondré mi temor en el corazón de ellos, para que no se aparten de mí. 41 Me regocijaré por causa de ellos al hacerles el bien. Los plantaré en esta tierra con verdad, con todo mi corazón y con toda mi alma”.

42 Porque así ha dicho el SEÑOR: “Así como traje sobre este pueblo todo este gran mal, así traeré sobre ellos todo el bien que hablo acerca de ellos. 43 Y se comprarán campos en esta tierra de la cual ustedes dicen: ‘Está desolada, sin hombres y sin animales, y es entregada en mano de los caldeos’. 44 Comprarán campos por dinero; harán documentos, los sellarán y llamarán testigos, en tierra de Benjamín, en los alrededores de Jerusalén y en las ciudades de Judá, en las ciudades de la región montañosa, en las ciudades de la Sefela y en las ciudades del Néguev, porque yo los restauraré de su cautividad”, dice el SEÑOR.

Jeremiah Buys a Field

32 This is the word the Lord spoke to Jeremiah. It was in the tenth year that Zedekiah was king of Judah. The tenth year of Zedekiah was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 At that time the army of Babylon was surrounding Jerusalem. Jeremiah was under arrest in the courtyard of the guard. This courtyard was at the palace of the king of Judah.

3 Zedekiah king of Judah had put Jeremiah in prison there. Zedekiah had asked, “Why have you prophesied the things you have?” (Jeremiah had said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I will soon give the city of Jerusalem to the king of Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar will capture this city. 4 Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape from the army of the Babylonians. But he will surely be given to the king of Babylon. And Zedekiah will speak to the king of Babylon face to face. Zedekiah will see him with his own eyes. 5 The king of Babylon will take Zedekiah to Babylon. Zedekiah will stay there until I have punished him,’ says the Lord. ‘If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”)

6 While Jeremiah was prisoner, he said, “The Lord spoke his word to me. He said: 7 Jeremiah, your cousin Hanamel will come to you soon. He is the son of your uncle Shallum. Hanamel will say to you, ‘Jeremiah, you are my nearest relative. So buy my field near the town of Anathoth. It is your right and your responsibility to buy that field.’

8 “Then it happened just as the Lord had said. My cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard. He said to me, ‘Buy my field near Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. Buy that land for yourself. It is your right to buy it and own it.’ So I knew this was a message from the Lord.

9 “I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel. I weighed out seven ounces of silver for him. 10 I signed the record that showed I now owned the field. And I had a copy of the record sealed up. Some men witnessed it and signed it also. And I weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 Then I took the sealed copy of the record of ownership. And I took the copy that was not sealed. 12 And I gave them to Baruch son of Neriah. Neriah was the son of Mahseiah. The sealed copy of the record of ownership had all the demands and limits of my purchase. I gave this paper of ownership to Baruch. It was while my cousin Hanamel and the other witnesses were there. Those witnesses also signed the record of ownership. There were also many Jews sitting in the courtyard. And they saw me give the record of ownership to Baruch.

13 “With all the people watching, I said to Baruch, 14 ‘This is what the Lord of heaven’s armies, the God of Israel, says: Take both copies of the record of ownership. Take both the sealed copy and the copy that was not sealed. And put them in a clay jar. Do this so that they will last a long time. 15 This is what the Lord of heaven’s armies, the God of Israel, says: In the future my people will once again buy houses. They will also buy fields for grain and vineyards in the land of Israel.’

16 “I gave the record of ownership to Baruch son of Neriah. Then I prayed to the Lord. I said: 17 Oh, Lord God, you made the skies and the earth. You made them with your very great power. There is nothing too wonderful for you to do. 18 Lord, you show love and kindness to thousands of people. But you also bring punishment to children for their fathers’ sins. Great and powerful God, your name is the Lord of heaven’s armies. 19 You plan and do great things, Lord. You see everything that people do. You reward people for the way they live and for what they do. 20 Lord, you did miracles and wonderful things in the land of Egypt. You have kept on doing them even until today. You did miracles in Israel and among the other nations. You have become well known. 21 Lord, you used signs and miracles and brought your people, the Israelites, out of Egypt. You used your great power and strength to do those things. You brought great terror on everyone. 22 Lord, you gave this land to the people of Israel. This is the land you promised to their ancestors long ago. It’s a land where much food grows. 23 The people of Israel came into this land and took it for their own. But those people did not obey you. They did not follow your teachings. They did not do the things you commanded. So you made all these terrible things happen to them.

24 “And now, the enemy has surrounded the city. They are building roads to the top of the walls. There will be war, hunger and terrible diseases. These will cause the city to be handed over to the Babylonians. They are attacking the city now. Lord, you said this would happen. And now you see it is happening. 25 But now, Lord God, you are telling me, ‘Buy the field with silver. Choose some men to watch while I purchase it.’ You are telling me this while the Babylonian army is ready to capture the city.”

26 Then the Lord spoke his word to Jeremiah: 27 “I am the Lord. I am the God of every person on the earth. You know that nothing is impossible for me. 28 So this is what I say: I will soon give the city of Jerusalem to the Babylonian army. And I will give it to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. That army will capture the city. 29 The Babylonian army is already attacking the city of Jerusalem. They will soon enter the city and start a fire to burn down the city. They will also burn down the houses. The people of Jerusalem made me angry. They offered sacrifices to Baal on the roofs[a] of their houses. And the people poured out drink offerings to other idols. 30 The people of Israel and Judah have done only the things I said were wrong. They have done this since they were young. They have made me angry by worshiping idols made with their own hands,” says the Lord. 31 “From the day Jerusalem was built until now, they have made me very angry. Jerusalem has made me so angry I must remove it from my sight. 32 I will destroy it. This is because of the evil the people of Israel and Judah have done. The people, their kings and officers have made me angry. Their priests and prophets have made me angry. All the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem have made me angry. 33 They turned their backs to me. I tried to teach them again and again. But they wouldn’t listen to me. I tried to correct them, but they wouldn’t listen. 34 They put their hated idols in the place where I have chosen to be worshiped. In this way they made it unclean. 35 In the Valley of Ben Hinnom those people built places to worship Baal. They built them so they could burn their sons and daughters as sacrifices to Molech. But I never commanded them to do such a hated thing. I never even thought of it! This would make Judah sin.

36 “You are saying, ‘There will be war, hunger and terrible diseases. So the city will be handed over to the king of Babylon.’ But the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 37 I have forced the people of Israel and Judah to leave their land. I was very furious and angry with them. But I will gather them from the land where I forced them to go. I will bring them back to this place. I will let them live in peace and safety. 38 The people of Israel and Judah will be my people. And I will be their God. 39 I will make them want to be truly one people. They will have one goal. They will truly want to worship me all their lives. They will do this for their own good and for their children after them.

40 “I will make an agreement with them. This agreement will last forever. And I will never turn away from them. I will always be good to them. I will make them want to respect me. Then they will never turn away from me. 41 I will enjoy doing good to them. And I will surely plant them in this land and make them grow. I will do this with my whole being.”

42 This is what the Lord says: “I have brought this great disaster to the people of Israel and Judah. In the same way I will bring good things to them. I promise to do good things for them. 43 You are saying, ‘This land is an empty desert. There are no people or animals here. The Babylonian army defeated this country.’ But in the future, people will once again buy fields in this land. 44 They will use their money and buy fields. They will sign and seal their agreements. People will witness their signing records of ownership. They will again buy fields in the land of Benjamin and in the area around Jerusalem. They will buy fields in the towns of Judah and in the mountains. They will buy them in the western mountain slopes and in southern Judah. This is because I will make everything as good as it once was,” says the Lord.

Jeremiah Buys a Field

32 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth(A) year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth(B) year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging(C) Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined(D) in the courtyard of the guard(E) in the royal palace of Judah.

3 Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy(F) as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture(G) it. 4 Zedekiah(H) king of Judah will not escape(I) the Babylonians[a](J) but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes. 5 He will take(K) Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him,(L) declares the Lord. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”(M)

6 Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me: 7 Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is going to come to you and say, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth,(N) because as nearest relative it is your right and duty(O) to buy it.’

8 “Then, just as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, ‘Buy my field(P) at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Since it is your right to redeem it and possess it, buy it for yourself.’

“I knew that this was the word of the Lord; 9 so I bought the field(Q) at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels[b] of silver.(R) 10 I signed and sealed the deed,(S) had it witnessed,(T) and weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy— 12 and I gave this deed to Baruch(U) son of Neriah,(V) the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

13 “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions: 14 ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed(W) and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time. 15 For this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.’(X)

16 “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch(Y) son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord:

17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord,(Z) you have made the heavens and the earth(AA) by your great power and outstretched arm.(AB) Nothing is too hard(AC) for you. 18 You show love(AD) to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps(AE) of their children(AF) after them. Great and mighty God,(AG) whose name is the Lord Almighty,(AH) 19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds.(AI) Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind;(AJ) you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve.(AK) 20 You performed signs and wonders(AL) in Egypt(AM) and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown(AN) that is still yours. 21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand(AO) and an outstretched arm(AP) and with great terror.(AQ) 22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.(AR) 23 They came in and took possession(AS) of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law;(AT) they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster(AU) on them.

24 “See how the siege ramps(AV) are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague,(AW) the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said(AX) has happened,(AY) as you now see. 25 And though the city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians, you, Sovereign Lord, say to me, ‘Buy the field(AZ) with silver and have the transaction witnessed.(BA)’”

26 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind.(BB) Is anything too hard for me?(BC) 28 Therefore this is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar(BD) king of Babylon, who will capture it.(BE) 29 The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down,(BF) along with the houses(BG) where the people aroused my anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings(BH) to other gods.(BI)

30 “The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth;(BJ) indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but arouse my anger(BK) with what their hands have made,(BL) declares the Lord. 31 From the day it was built until now, this city(BM) has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove(BN) it from my sight. 32 The people of Israel and Judah have provoked(BO) me by all the evil(BP) they have done—they, their kings and officials,(BQ) their priests and prophets, the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem. 33 They turned their backs(BR) to me and not their faces; though I taught(BS) them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.(BT) 34 They set up their vile images(BU) in the house that bears my Name(BV) and defiled(BW) it. 35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(BX) to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molek,(BY) though I never commanded—nor did it enter my mind(BZ)—that they should do such a detestable(CA) thing and so make Judah sin.(CB)

36 “You are saying about this city, ‘By the sword, famine and plague(CC) it will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon’; but this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 37 I will surely gather(CD) them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger(CE) and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.(CF) 38 They will be my people,(CG) and I will be their God. 39 I will give them singleness(CH) of heart and action, so that they will always fear(CI) me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. 40 I will make an everlasting covenant(CJ) with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire(CK) them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.(CL) 41 I will rejoice(CM) in doing them good(CN) and will assuredly plant(CO) them in this land with all my heart and soul.(CP)

42 “This is what the Lord says: As I have brought all this great calamity(CQ) on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised(CR) them. 43 Once more fields will be bought(CS) in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate(CT) waste, without people or animals, for it has been given into the hands of the Babylonians.’ 44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds(CU) will be signed, sealed and witnessed(CV) in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev,(CW) because I will restore(CX) their fortunes,[c] declares the Lord.”
