3 »Supongamos que un hombre se divorcia de su mujer, y que ella lo deja para casarse con otro. ¿Volvería el primero a casarse con ella? ¡Claro que no! Semejante acción contaminaría por completo la tierra. Pues bien, tú te has prostituido con muchos amantes, y ya no podrás volver a mí —afirma el Señor—.
2 »Fíjate bien en esas lomas estériles:
¡Dónde no se han acostado contigo!
Como un beduino en el desierto,
te sentabas junto al camino,
a la espera de tus amantes.
Has contaminado la tierra
con tus infames prostituciones.
3 Por eso se demoraron las lluvias,
y no llegaron los aguaceros de primavera.
Tienes el descaro de una prostituta;
¡no conoces la vergüenza!
4 No hace mucho me llamabas:
“Padre mío, amigo de mi juventud,
5 ¿vas a estar siempre enojado?
¿Guardarás rencor eternamente?”
Y mientras hablabas,
hacías todo el mal posible».
La infidelidad de Israel
6 Durante el reinado del rey Josías el Señor me dijo: «¿Has visto lo que ha hecho Israel, la infiel? Se fue a todo monte alto, y allí, bajo todo árbol frondoso, se prostituyó. 7 Yo pensaba que después de hacer todo esto ella volvería a mí. Pero no lo hizo. Esto lo vio su hermana, la infiel Judá, 8 y vio[a] también que yo había repudiado a la apóstata Israel, y que le había dado carta de divorcio por todos los adulterios que había cometido. No obstante, su hermana, la infiel Judá, no tuvo ningún temor, sino que también ella se prostituyó.
9 »Como Israel no tuvo ningún reparo en prostituirse, contaminó la tierra y cometió adulterio al adorar ídolos de piedra y de madera. 10 A pesar de todo esto, su hermana, la infiel Judá, no se volvió a mí de todo corazón, sino que solo fingió volverse», afirma el Señor.
11 El Señor me dijo: «La apóstata Israel ha resultado ser más justa que la infiel Judá. 12 Ve al norte y proclama este mensaje:
»“¡Vuelve, apóstata Israel!
No te miraré con ira
—afirma el Señor—.
No te guardaré rencor para siempre,
porque soy misericordioso
—afirma el Señor—.
13 Tan solo reconoce tu culpa,
y que te rebelaste contra el Señor tu Dios.
Bajo todo árbol frondoso
has brindado a dioses extraños tus favores,
y no has querido obedecerme”
—afirma el Señor—.
14 »¡Volveos a mí, apóstatas —afirma el Señor—, porque yo soy vuestro esposo! De vosotros tomaré uno de cada ciudad y dos de cada familia, y os traeré a Sión. 15 Os daré pastores que cumplan mi voluntad, para que os guíen con sabiduría y entendimiento.
16 »En aquellos días, cuando os hayáis multiplicado y seáis numerosos en el país, ya no se dirá más: “Arca del pacto del Señor”. Nadie pensará más en ella ni la recordará; nadie la echará de menos ni volverá a fabricarla —afirma el Señor—.
17 »En aquel tiempo llamarán a Jerusalén: “Trono del Señor”. Todas las naciones se reunirán en Jerusalén para honrar el nombre del Señor, y ya no volverán a obedecer ciegamente a su malvado corazón.
18 »En aquellos días la tribu de Judá se unirá al pueblo de Israel, y juntos vendrán del país del norte, a la tierra que di como herencia a sus antepasados.
19 »Yo mismo dije:
»“¡Cómo quisiera tratarte como a un hijo,
y darte una tierra codiciable,
la heredad más hermosa de las naciones!”
Yo creía que me llamarías “Padre mío”,
y que nunca dejarías de seguirme.
20 Pero tú, pueblo de Israel,
me has sido infiel
como una mujer infiel a su esposo»,
afirma el Señor.
21 Se escucha un grito en las lomas estériles,
la súplica angustiosa del pueblo de Israel,
porque han pervertido su conducta,
se han olvidado del Señor su Dios.
22 «¡Volveos, apóstatas,
y os curaré de vuestra infidelidad!»
«Aquí estamos, a ti venimos,
porque tú eres el Señor nuestro Dios.
23 Ciertamente son un engaño las colinas,
y una mentira el estruendo sobre las montañas.
Ciertamente en el Señor nuestro Dios
está la salvación de Israel.
24 Desde nuestra juventud, la vergonzosa idolatría
ha engullido el esfuerzo de nuestros antepasados:
sus rebaños y su ganado,
sus hijos y sus hijas.
25 ¡Acostémonos en nuestra vergüenza,
y que nos cubra nuestra desgracia!
¡Nosotros y nuestros antepasados
hemos pecado contra el Señor nuestro Dios!
Desde nuestra juventud y hasta el día de hoy,
no hemos obedecido al Señor nuestro Dios».

3 Dios le dijo al pueblo de Judá:
«Supongamos que un hombre se divorcia, y que luego la que era su esposa se casa con otro hombre; ¿tú crees que el primer esposo volvería a casarse con esa mujer? ¡Claro que no! ¡Eso sería una vergüenza para el país! Entonces, ¿cómo es que tú pretendes volver conmigo? ¡Si tienes más dioses que los amantes que tiene una prostituta! Y ésta es la pura verdad.
2 »Mira hacia las colinas desiertas,
y dime dónde no has adorado dioses extraños.
Te sientas junto a los caminos,
y te ofreces como prostituta
a todos los que pasan.
Con tu infidelidad
has llenado de maldad el país.
3 Por eso no llegan las lluvias,
ni caen aguaceros en la primavera.
No tienes vergüenza;
eres peor que una prostituta.
4 Hasta hace poco me decías
que me querías como a un esposo,
que yo era el novio de tu juventud.
5 También me pediste calmar mi enojo,
pero no hablabas en serio,
pues seguiste haciendo lo malo».
Israel es como una esposa infiel
6 Cuando Josías era rey, Dios me dijo:
«Jeremías, ¿te has fijado en lo que ha hecho mi pueblo Israel? Se ha comportado como una esposa infiel. En los cerros altos y bajo la sombra de cualquier árbol adora a dioses extraños. 7 Después de todo lo malo que había hecho, pensé que se arrepentiría y volvería conmigo; pero no lo hizo. Y el pueblo de Judá se ha comportado igual. 8 Aunque supo que yo rechacé a Israel, me fue infiel y me puso en vergüenza al adorar a otros dioses.
9 »A Israel no le importó traicionarme; al contrario, contaminó el país y me ofendió al adorar ídolos hechos de piedra y de madera. 10 Para colmo de males, Judá quiso engañarme diciendo que se había arrepentido. Pero no era verdad. Yo les juro que así fue».
11 Dios también me dijo:
«Jeremías, aunque Israel me fue infiel, al fin de cuentas resultó ser mejor que Judá. 12-13 Así que dirígete al norte y anuncia este mensaje:
“Israel, pueblo infiel, ¡vuélvete a mí!
Me olvidaré por completo de mi enojo,
y te recibiré con los brazos abiertos,
porque soy un Dios bondadoso.
Tan sólo te pido que reconozcas tu culpa,
que admitas que te rebelaste contra mí,
que no has querido obedecerme,
y que bajo la sombra de cualquier árbol
has adorado a otros dioses.
Te juro que así es”.
Israel es como un hijo rebelde
14 »¡Vuelvan a mí, israelitas rebeldes! ¡Ustedes son mis hijos! De cada ciudad tomaré a uno de ustedes, y de cada familia tomaré a dos, y los traeré a Jerusalén. 15 Yo les daré gobernantes que actúen como a mí me gusta, para que los guíen con sabiduría y con inteligencia.
16 »En el futuro, cuando ustedes hayan poblado el país, no se hablará más del cofre del pacto, ni nadie volverá a acordarse de él. Tampoco volverá a fabricarse uno nuevo, porque ya no será necesario. Les juro que así será.
17 »Cuando llegue ese día, la ciudad de Jerusalén será conocida como “el trono de Dios”. Todas las naciones vendrán a Jerusalén para adorarme, y ya no se dejarán llevar por los malos deseos de su necio corazón. 18 Entonces los reinos de Israel y de Judá volverán a unirse, y desde el norte volverán a la tierra que les di como herencia a los antepasados de ustedes.
19 »Pueblo de Israel,
yo quise tratarte como a un hijo.
Pensé en regalarte la mejor tierra,
¡el país más hermoso del mundo!
Creí que me llamarías “Padre”,
y que siempre estarías a mi lado.
20 Pero me fuiste infiel,
pues adoraste a otros dioses.
Te juro que así fue.
21 »Puede oírse por las montañas desiertas,
el llanto angustiado de los israelitas.
Eligieron el camino equivocado,
y a mí, que soy su Dios, me abandonaron.
22 »¡Vuelvan conmigo, hijos rebeldes!
¡Yo los convertiré en hijos obedientes!»
Los israelitas respondieron:
«Dios nuestro, aquí nos tienes.
A ti volvemos, porque eres nuestro Dios.
23 De nada nos sirve ir a las colinas,
ni lanzar nuestros gritos en las montañas.
Solamente en ti, Dios nuestro,
hallaremos nuestra salvación.
24 Desde que éramos jóvenes,
nuestra vergonzosa idolatría
echó a perder a nuestros hijos e hijas,
y perdimos nuestras ovejas y ganados,
y todo lo que consiguieron
nuestros antepasados.
25 Nosotros y nuestros antepasados
hemos pecado contra ti.
Desde que éramos jóvenes,
y hasta el día de hoy,
jamás te hemos obedecido.
Por eso, debemos avergonzarnos
y humillarnos por completo».

Jeremiah’s summons to change
3 If a man divorces his wife,
and after she leaves him marries another,
can he return to her again?
Wouldn’t such an act completely corrupt the land?
Yet you have prostituted yourself with many lovers.
Would you return to me?
declares the Lord.
2 Look to the well-traveled paths[a] and see!
Where haven’t you committed adultery?
On the roadsides you sit in wait for lovers,
like a nomad in the wilderness.
You have corrupted the land
with your cheap and reckless behavior.
3 That’s why the showers have failed
and the spring rains have ceased.
Still you act like a brazen prostitute[b]
who refuses to blush.
4 At the same time you say to me,
“My father, my friend since youth,
5 will you stay angry forever?
Will you continue to be furious?”
This is what you say
while you do as much evil as you possibly can.
6 During the rule of King Josiah, the Lord said to me: Have you noticed what unfaithful Israel has done? She’s gone about looking for lovers on top of every high hill and under every lush tree. 7 I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me, but she didn’t. Her disloyal sister Judah saw this. 8 She[c] also saw that I sent unfaithful Israel away with divorce papers because of all her acts of unfaithfulness; yet disloyal sister Judah was not afraid but kept on playing the prostitute. 9 She didn’t think twice about corrupting the land and committing adultery with stone and tree. 10 Yet even after all this, disloyal sister Judah didn’t return to me with all her heart but only insincerely, declares the Lord. 11 Then the Lord said to me: Unfaithful Israel is less guilty[d] than disloyal Judah.
12 Go proclaim these words to the north and say:
Return, unfaithful Israel,
declares the Lord.
I won’t reject you,
for I’m faithful,
declares the Lord;
I won’t stay angry forever.
13 Only acknowledge your wrongdoing:
how you have rebelled against the Lord your God,
and given yourself to strangers
under every lush tree
and haven’t obeyed me,
declares the Lord.
14 Return, rebellious children,
declares the Lord,
for I’m your husband.
I’ll gather you—
one from a city and two from a tribe—
and bring you back to Zion.
15 I will appoint shepherds with whom I’m pleased, and they will lead you with knowledge and understanding. 16 And in those days, when your numbers have greatly increased in the land, declares the Lord, people will no longer talk about the Lord’s covenant chest; they won’t recall or remember it; they won’t even miss it or try to build another one. 17 At that time, they will call Jerusalem the Lord’s throne, and all nations will gather there to honor the Lord’s name. No longer will they follow their own willful and evil hearts. 18 In those days the people of Judah and Israel will leave the north together for the land that I gave their ancestors as an inheritance.
19 I thought to myself, How wonderful it would be
to treat you like children
and give you a beautiful land,
an inheritance unrivaled among the nations.
And I thought, You will call me father,
and you won’t turn away from me.
20 But as a woman betrays her lover,
so you, people of Israel, have betrayed me,
declares the Lord.
21 A voice is heard on the well-traveled paths;[e]
it’s the crying and pleading of the people of Israel,
who have lost their way
and forgotten the Lord their God.
22 Return, rebellious children,
and I will heal your rebellion.
“Here we are; we come to you,
for you are the Lord our God.
23 Surely what happens on the hills[f] is a waste,
as is the uproar on the mountains.
Only in the Lord our God
is the salvation of Israel.
24 From our youth, shame[g] has devoured
the fruit of our parents’ labor—
their flocks and herds,
as well as their sons and daughters.
25 Let’s lie down in our shame.
Let our dishonor cover us,
for we have sinned against the Lord our God,
both we and our ancestors,
from our youth to this very day.
We have disobeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

GOD’S WORD Translation
3 A saying:
If a man divorces his wife
and she leaves him and marries another man,
her first husband shouldn’t go back to her again.
The land would become thoroughly polluted.
“You have acted like a prostitute who has many lovers.
And now you want to come back to me!” declares the Lord.
2 “Look at the bare hills, and see.
You have had sex with men in every place.
You sat by the roadside waiting for them like a nomad in the desert.
You have polluted the land with your prostitution and wickedness.
3 So the rain has been withheld, and there have been no spring showers.
Yet, you have the shameless look of a prostitute,
and you refuse to blush.
4 But now you are calling to me.
You say, ‘Father! You have been my companion
ever since I was young.
5 He won’t hold a grudge forever.
He won’t always be angry.’
You have said and done all the evil things that you could.”
The Lord Offers to Forgive the Ten Tribes of Israel despite Their Idolatry
6 When Josiah was king, the Lord asked me, “Did you see what unfaithful Israel did? She went up every high mountain and under every large tree, and she acted like a prostitute there. 7 I thought that after she had done all this that she would come back to me. But she didn’t come back, and her treacherous sister Judah saw her. 8 Judah saw that I sent unfaithful Israel away because of her adultery and that I gave Israel her divorce papers. But treacherous Judah, her sister, wasn’t afraid. She also acted like a prostitute. 9 Because she wasn’t concerned about acting like a prostitute, she polluted the land and committed adultery with standing stones and wood pillars. 10 Even after all this, Israel’s treacherous sister Judah didn’t wholeheartedly come back to me. She was deceitful,” declares the Lord.
11 Then the Lord said to me, “Unfaithful Israel was less guilty than treacherous Judah. 12 Go and proclaim these things to the north:
“ ‘Come back, unfaithful Israel.
It is the Lord speaking.
I will no longer frown on you
because I’m merciful,’ declares the Lord.
‘I will no longer be angry with you.
13 Admit that you’ve done wrong!
You have rebelled against the Lord your God.
You have given yourself to strangers under every large tree.
You have not obeyed me,’ declares the Lord.
14 “Come back, you rebellious people,” declares the Lord. “I’m your husband. I will take you, one from every city and two from every family, and bring you to Zion. 15 I will give you shepherds after my own heart. They will be shepherds who feed you with knowledge and insight. 16 In those days you will be fertile, and your population will increase in the land,” declares the Lord. “People will no longer talk about the ark of the Lord’s promise. It will no longer come to mind. They won’t remember it, miss it, or make another one. 17 At that time they will call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord. All nations will gather in Jerusalem because the name of the Lord will be found there. They will no longer follow their own stubborn, evil ways. 18 In those days the nation of Judah will live with the nation of Israel. They will come together from the land of the north to the land that I gave their ancestors as their own property.
19 “I wanted to treat you like children
and give you a pleasant land,
the most beautiful property among the nations.
I thought that you would call me Father and wouldn’t turn away from me.
20 But like a wife who betrays her husband,
so you, nation of Israel, betrayed me,” declares the Lord.
21 The sound of crying is heard on the hills.
It is the crying and the pleading of the people of Israel.
They have become crooked
and have forgotten the Lord their God.
22 “Come back, you rebellious people,
and I will forgive you for being unfaithful.”
Here we are!
We have come to you because you are the Lord our God.
23 Truly, the noise from the hills, from the mountains,
is the noise of false worship.
Truly, the Lord our God will rescue us.
24 Ever since we were young,
the shameful worship ⌞of Baal⌟
has taken everything our ancestors worked for,
their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.
25 We must lie down in our shame
and be covered by our disgrace.
Ever since we were young, we and our ancestors have sinned
against the Lord our God.
We haven’t obeyed the Lord our God.
