Carta de Jeremías a los cautivos
29 Estas son las palabras de la carta que el profeta Jeremías envió de Jerusalén a los ancianos que habían quedado de los que fueron transportados, y a los sacerdotes y profetas y a todo el pueblo que Nabucodonosor llevó cautivo de Jerusalén a Babilonia 2 (después que salió el rey Jeconías, la reina, los del palacio, los príncipes de Judá y de Jerusalén, los artífices y los ingenieros de Jerusalén),(A) 3 por mano de Elasa hijo de Safán y de Gemarías hijo de Hilcías, a quienes envió Sedequías rey de Judá a Babilonia, a Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia. Decía: 4 Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, a todos los de la cautividad que hice transportar de Jerusalén a Babilonia: 5 Edificad casas, y habitadlas; y plantad huertos, y comed del fruto de ellos. 6 Casaos, y engendrad hijos e hijas; dad mujeres a vuestros hijos, y dad maridos a vuestras hijas, para que tengan hijos e hijas; y multiplicaos ahí, y no os disminuyáis. 7 Y procurad la paz de la ciudad a la cual os hice transportar, y rogad por ella a Jehová; porque en su paz tendréis vosotros paz. 8 Porque así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: No os engañen vuestros profetas que están entre vosotros, ni vuestros adivinos; ni atendáis a los sueños que soñáis. 9 Porque falsamente os profetizan ellos en mi nombre; no los envié, ha dicho Jehová. 10 Porque así dijo Jehová: Cuando en Babilonia se cumplan los setenta años,(B) yo os visitaré, y despertaré sobre vosotros mi buena palabra, para haceros volver a este lugar. 11 Porque yo sé los pensamientos que tengo acerca de vosotros, dice Jehová, pensamientos de paz, y no de mal, para daros el fin que esperáis. 12 Entonces me invocaréis, y vendréis y oraréis a mí, y yo os oiré; 13 y me buscaréis y me hallaréis, porque me buscaréis de todo vuestro corazón.(C) 14 Y seré hallado por vosotros, dice Jehová, y haré volver vuestra cautividad, y os reuniré de todas las naciones y de todos los lugares adonde os arrojé, dice Jehová; y os haré volver al lugar de donde os hice llevar. 15 Mas habéis dicho: Jehová nos ha levantado profetas en Babilonia. 16 Pero así ha dicho Jehová acerca del rey que está sentado sobre el trono de David, y de todo el pueblo que mora en esta ciudad, de vuestros hermanos que no salieron con vosotros en cautiverio; 17 así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: He aquí envío yo contra ellos espada, hambre y pestilencia, y los pondré como los higos malos, que de tan malos no se pueden comer. 18 Los perseguiré con espada, con hambre y con pestilencia, y los daré por escarnio a todos los reinos de la tierra, por maldición y por espanto, y por burla y por afrenta para todas las naciones entre las cuales los he arrojado; 19 por cuanto no oyeron mis palabras, dice Jehová, que les envié por mis siervos los profetas, desde temprano y sin cesar; y no habéis escuchado, dice Jehová. 20 Oíd, pues, palabra de Jehová, vosotros todos los transportados que envié de Jerusalén a Babilonia. 21 Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, acerca de Acab hijo de Colaías, y acerca de Sedequías hijo de Maasías, que os profetizan falsamente en mi nombre: He aquí los entrego yo en mano de Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, y él los matará delante de vuestros ojos. 22 Y todos los transportados de Judá que están en Babilonia harán de ellos una maldición, diciendo: Póngate Jehová como a Sedequías y como a Acab, a quienes asó al fuego el rey de Babilonia. 23 Porque hicieron maldad en Israel, y cometieron adulterio con las mujeres de sus prójimos, y falsamente hablaron en mi nombre palabra que no les mandé; lo cual yo sé y testifico, dice Jehová. 24 Y a Semaías de Nehelam hablarás, diciendo: 25 Así habló Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, diciendo: Tú enviaste cartas en tu nombre a todo el pueblo que está en Jerusalén, y al sacerdote Sofonías hijo de Maasías, y a todos los sacerdotes, diciendo: 26 Jehová te ha puesto por sacerdote en lugar del sacerdote Joiada, para que te encargues en la casa de Jehová de todo hombre loco que profetice, poniéndolo en el calabozo y en el cepo. 27 ¿Por qué, pues, no has reprendido ahora a Jeremías de Anatot, que os profetiza? 28 Porque él nos envió a decir en Babilonia: Largo será el cautiverio; edificad casas, y habitadlas; plantad huertos, y comed el fruto de ellos. 29 Y el sacerdote Sofonías había leído esta carta a oídos del profeta Jeremías. 30 Y vino palabra de Jehová a Jeremías, diciendo: 31 Envía a decir a todos los cautivos: Así ha dicho Jehová de Semaías de Nehelam: Porque os profetizó Semaías, y yo no lo envié, y os hizo confiar en mentira; 32 por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que yo castigaré a Semaías de Nehelam y a su descendencia; no tendrá varón que more entre este pueblo, ni verá el bien que haré yo a mi pueblo, dice Jehová; porque contra Jehová ha hablado rebelión.

Carta de Jeremías
29 Yo, Jeremías, les envié desde Jerusalén una carta a los jefes del país y a los sacerdotes, a los profetas y a todos los que el rey de Babilonia se había llevado prisioneros a su país. 2-3 Esa carta la envié con Elasá hijo de Safán y con Guemarías hijo de Hilquías. A estos dos el rey Sedequías los había enviado antes a Babilonia, para hablar con el rey de ese país. Cuando yo envié la carta, ya habían sido llevados prisioneros a Babilonia el rey Joaquín, la reina madre, los funcionarios y jefes de Judá, y también los artesanos y los herreros. La carta decía:
4 «Yo, el Dios de Israel,
a todos los que llevé a Babilonia:
5-6 “Ya que están allí, construyan casas y vivan en ellas. Cultiven sus granjas y coman los frutos que allí se den. Cásense y tengan hijos; no dejen que su población disminuya. Asegúrense de que sus hijos e hijas también se casen y tengan hijos. 7 Además, trabajen para que prospere la ciudad. Rueguen por Babilonia, pues si la ciudad prospera, también ustedes prosperarán.
8-9 ”No se dejen engañar por esos profetas y adivinos que andan entre ustedes, y que usan mi nombre para anunciar sus mentiras. No crean en los sueños que dicen tener. Les aseguro que yo no los he enviado.
10 ”Ustedes van a vivir unos setenta años en Babilonia. Cuando se cumpla ese tiempo, les prometo que los haré volver a Jerusalén. 11 Mis planes para ustedes solamente yo los sé, y no son para su mal, sino para su bien. Voy a darles un futuro lleno de bienestar. 12 Cuando ustedes me pidan algo en oración, yo los escucharé. 13 Cuando ustedes me busquen, me encontrarán, siempre y cuando me busquen de todo corazón. 14 Estaré con ustedes y pondré fin a su condición de esclavos. Los reuniré de todas las naciones por donde los haya dispersado, y los haré volver a Jerusalén. Les juro que así lo haré.
15-17 ”Tal vez dirán ustedes que yo les he puesto profetas en Babilonia. Pero debo aclararles algo. Yo, el Dios todopoderoso, voy a mandar guerra, hambre y enfermedades contra el rey que ocupa el trono de David, y contra todos los parientes de ustedes que aún quedan en Jerusalén, es decir, contra todos los que no fueron llevados como esclavos a Babilonia. ¡Serán como higos podridos, que de tan podridos no se pueden comer!
18-20 ”Todos ustedes, los que fueron llevados prisioneros de Jerusalén a Babilonia, ¡obedezcan de una vez por todas mi palabra! Hasta ahora no han querido obedecerme. No han hecho caso de los mensajes que, una y otra vez, les he enviado por medio de mis servidores los profetas. Por eso, yo los perseguiré con guerras, hambre y enfermedades. Al verlos, todas las naciones adonde yo los mande temblarán de miedo. ¡Ustedes serán objeto de burla y de insulto! Les juro que así será.
21-23 ”Yo, el Dios todopoderoso, sé todo lo que han hecho, y les advierto que voy a entregar a Ahab hijo de Colaías, y a Sedequías hijo de Maasías. Los entregaré al rey de Babilonia, porque usaron mi nombre para anunciar cosas que yo jamás les ordené decir. Todo lo que han dicho es mentira. Además, cometieron algo terrible en Israel, pues tuvieron relaciones sexuales con mujeres que no eran sus esposas. Por eso el rey de Babilonia los matará delante de ustedes. Y cuando los que fueron llevados prisioneros a Babilonia quieran maldecir a alguien, dirán: ‘Que Dios te quite la vida como lo hizo con Ahab y Sedequías’. A estos dos el rey de Babilonia los quemó en el fuego. Les juro que así será”».
Mensaje para Semaías
24 Después Dios me ordenó darle este mensaje a Semaías, el soñador:
25 «Yo, el Dios todopoderoso, sé que tú enviaste cartas al sacerdote Sofonías hijo de Maaseías, a todos los otros sacerdotes y a toda la gente que está en Jerusalén. En esas cartas le decías a Sofonías 26 que yo lo había nombrado sacerdote en lugar de Joiadá, para que cuidara mi templo. También le decías que a todo loco que se creyera profeta, él debería meterlo en el calabozo y atarlo con cadenas. 27 Además, le reclamabas a Sofonías el no haber apresado a Jeremías. Según tú, Jeremías se hacía pasar por profeta 28 y hasta se había atrevido a enviar una carta a los prisioneros en Babilonia. En esa carta, Jeremías les aconsejaba construir casas y vivir en ellas, plantar árboles frutales y comer de los frutos que dieran, porque pasarían muchos años como esclavos en Babilonia».
29 ¡Esa carta se la leyó el sacerdote Sofonías al profeta Jeremías!
30 Dios también me ordenó 31 darles el siguiente mensaje a todos los que habían sido llevados como esclavos a Babilonia:
«Semaías, el soñador, les ha dado un mensaje en mi nombre, y les ha hecho creer en una mentira. Pero yo no lo he enviado. 32 Y como ha hecho que mi pueblo se rebele contra mí, yo lo voy a castigar. Él y su familia dejarán de ser parte de mi pueblo, y no disfrutarán del bienestar que yo le daré a mi pueblo. Les juro que así será».

A Letter to the Exiles
29 This is the text of the letter(A) that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.(B) 2 (This was after King Jehoiachin[a](C) and the queen mother,(D) the court officials and the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the skilled workers and the artisans had gone into exile from Jerusalem.) 3 He entrusted the letter to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. It said:
4 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried(E) into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 “Build(F) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.(G) 7 Also, seek(H) the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray(I) to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” 8 Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets(J) and diviners among you deceive(K) you. Do not listen to the dreams(L) you encourage them to have.(M) 9 They are prophesying lies(N) to you in my name. I have not sent(O) them,” declares the Lord.
10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years(P) are completed for Babylon, I will come to you(Q) and fulfill my good promise(R) to bring you back(S) to this place. 11 For I know the plans(T) I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper(U) you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.(V) 12 Then you will call(W) on me and come and pray(X) to me, and I will listen(Y) to you. 13 You will seek(Z) me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.(AA) 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back(AB) from captivity.[b] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”(AC)
15 You may say, “The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,” 16 but this is what the Lord says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your fellow citizens who did not go with you into exile— 17 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will send the sword, famine and plague(AD) against them and I will make them like figs(AE) that are so bad they cannot be eaten. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent(AF) to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse[c](AG) and an object of horror,(AH) of scorn(AI) and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them. 19 For they have not listened to my words,”(AJ) declares the Lord, “words that I sent to them again and again(AK) by my servants the prophets.(AL) And you exiles have not listened either,” declares the Lord.
20 Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I have sent(AM) away from Jerusalem to Babylon. 21 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies(AN) to you in my name: “I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will put them to death before your very eyes. 22 Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon will use this curse: ‘May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned(AO) in the fire.’ 23 For they have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery(AP) with their neighbors’ wives, and in my name they have uttered lies—which I did not authorize. I know(AQ) it and am a witness(AR) to it,” declares the Lord.
Message to Shemaiah
24 Tell Shemaiah the Nehelamite, 25 “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah(AS) son of Maaseiah, and to all the other priests. You said to Zephaniah, 26 ‘The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac(AT) who acts like a prophet into the stocks(AU) and neck-irons. 27 So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you? 28 He has sent this message(AV) to us in Babylon: It will be a long time.(AW) Therefore build(AX) houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.’”
29 Zephaniah(AY) the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send this message to all the exiles: ‘This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah(AZ) the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send(BA) him, and has persuaded you to trust in lies, 32 this is what the Lord says: I will surely punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants.(BB) He will have no one left among this people, nor will he see the good(BC) things I will do for my people, declares the Lord, because he has preached rebellion(BD) against me.’”

29 Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;
2 (After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;)
3 By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying,
4 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon;
5 Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;
6 Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.

10 For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
14 And I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.
15 Because ye have said, The Lord hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;
16 Know that thus saith the Lord of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;
17 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.
18 And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:
19 Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the Lord, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the Lord.
20 Hear ye therefore the word of the Lord, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon:
21 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;
22 And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The Lord make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;
23 Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the Lord.
24 Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,
25 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,
26 The Lord hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the Lord, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.
27 Now therefore why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you?
28 For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
29 And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.
30 Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying,
31 Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the Lord concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie:
32 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the Lord; because he hath taught rebellion against the Lord.

Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles
29 The prophet Jeremiah sent a letter to the exiles Nebuchadnezzar had carried off from Jerusalem to Babylon. It was addressed to the elders who were left among the exiles, to the priests, to the prophets, and to all the other people who were exiled in Babylon.[a] 2 He sent it after King Jeconiah, the queen mother, the palace officials,[b] the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metal workers had been exiled from Jerusalem.[c] 3 He sent it with Elasah son of Shaphan[d] and Gemariah son of Hilkiah.[e] King Zedekiah of Judah had sent these men to Babylon to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.[f] The letter said:
4 “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,[g] says to all those he sent into exile[h] to Babylon from Jerusalem, 5 ‘Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons and allow your daughters to get married so that they too can have sons and daughters. Grow in number; do not dwindle away. 7 Work to see that the city where I sent you as exiles enjoys peace and prosperity. Pray to the Lord for it. For as it prospers you will prosper.’
8 “For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,[i] says, ‘Do not let the prophets among you or those who claim to be able to predict the future by divination[j] deceive you. And do not pay any attention to the dreams that you are encouraging them to dream. 9 They are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so.[k] But I did not send them. I, the Lord, affirm it!’[l]
10 “For the Lord says, ‘Only when the seventy years of Babylonian rule[m] are over will I again take up consideration for you.[n] Then I will fulfill my gracious promise to you and restore[o] you to your homeland.[p] 11 For I know what I have planned for you,’ says the Lord.[q] ‘I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give you[r] a future filled with hope.[s] 12 When you call out to me and come to me in prayer,[t] I will hear your prayers.[u] 13 When you seek me in prayer and worship, you will find me available to you. If you seek me with all your heart and soul,[v] 14 I will make myself available to you,’[w] says the Lord.[x] ‘Then I will reverse your plight[y] and will regather you from all the nations and all the places where I have exiled you,’ says the Lord.[z] ‘I will bring you back to the place from which I exiled you.’
15 “You say, ‘The Lord has raised up prophets of good news[aa] for us here in Babylon.’ 16 But just listen to what the Lord has to say about[ab] the king who occupies David’s throne and all your fellow countrymen who are still living in this city of Jerusalem[ac] and were not carried off into exile with you. 17 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies[ad] says, ‘I will bring war,[ae] starvation, and disease on them. I will treat them like figs that are so rotten[af] they cannot be eaten. 18 I will chase after them with war,[ag] starvation, and disease. I will make all the kingdoms of the earth horrified at what happens to them. I will make them examples of those who are cursed, objects of horror, hissing scorn, and ridicule among all the nations where I exile them. 19 For they have not paid attention to what I said to them through my servants the prophets whom I sent to them over and over again,’[ah] says the Lord.[ai] ‘And you exiles[aj] have not paid any attention to them either,’ says the Lord.[ak] 20 ‘So pay attention to the Lord’s message,[al] all you exiles whom I have sent to Babylon from Jerusalem.’
21 “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,[am] also has something to say about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so.[an] ‘I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and he will execute them before your very eyes. 22 And all the exiles of Judah who are in Babylon will use them as examples when they put a curse on anyone. They will say, “May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab whom the king of Babylon roasted to death in the fire!”[ao] 23 This will happen to them because they have done what is shameful[ap] in Israel. They have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken lies while claiming my authority.[aq] They have spoken words that I did not command them to speak. I know what they have done. I have been a witness to it,’ says the Lord.”[ar]
A Response to the Letter and a Subsequent Letter
24 The Lord told Jeremiah, “Tell[as] Shemaiah the Nehelamite[at] 25 that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,[au] has a message for him.[av] Tell him,[aw] ‘On your own initiative[ax] you sent a letter[ay] to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah[az] and to all the other priests and to all the people in Jerusalem. 29 Zephaniah the priest read that letter to the prophet Jeremiah.[bk] 30 Then the Lord’s message came to Jeremiah: 31 “Send a message to all the exiles in Babylon. Tell them, ‘The Lord has spoken about Shemaiah the Nehelamite: “Shemaiah has spoken to you as a prophet even though I did not send him. He is making you trust in a lie.[bl] 32 Because he has done this,”[bm] the Lord says, “I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his whole family. - Jeremiah 29:1 tn Jer 29:1-3 are all one long sentence in Hebrew containing a parenthetical insertion. The text reads, “These are the words of the letter which the prophet Jeremiah sent to the elders…people whom Nebuchadnezzar had exiled from Jerusalem to Babylon after King Jeconiah…had gone from Jerusalem, by the hand of Elasah…whom Zedekiah sent…saying, ‘Thus says the Lord…’” The sentence has been broken up for the sake of contemporary English style and clarity.
- Jeremiah 29:2 tn This term is often mistakenly understood to refer to a “eunuch.” It is clear, however, in Gen 39:1 that “eunuchs” could be married. On the other hand, it is clear from Isa 59:3-5 that some who bore this title could not have children. The conditional clause in the middle of 29:13 and the deuteronomic theology reflected in both Deut 30:1-5 and 1 Kgs 8:46-48 suggest that the verbs are continent futures here. - Jeremiah 29:13 tn Or “If you wholeheartedly seek me”; Heb “You will seek me and find [me] because you will seek me with all your heart.” The translation attempts to reflect the theological nuances of “seeking” and “finding” and the psychological significance of “heart,” which refers more to intellectual and volitional concerns in the OT than to emotional ones.

- Jeremiah 29:14 tn Heb “restore your fortune.” Alternately, “I will bring you back from exile.” This idiom occurs twenty-six times in the OT and in several cases it is clearly not referring to return from exile but restoration of fortunes (e.g., Job 42:10; Hos 6:11-7:1; Jer 33:11). It is often followed as here by “regather” or “bring back” (e.g., Jer 30:3; Ezek 29:14) so it is often misunderstood as “bringing back the exiles.” The versions (LXX, Vulg., Tg., Pesh.) often translate the idiom as “to go away into captivity,” deriving the noun from שְׁבִי (shevi, “captivity”). However, the use of this expression in Old Aramaic documents of Sefire parallels the biblical idiom: “the gods restored the fortunes of the house of my father again” (J. A. Fitzmyer, The Aramaic Inscriptions of Sefire [BibOr], 100-101, 119-20). The idiom means “to turn someone’s fortune, bring about change” or “to reestablish as it was” (HALOT 1386 s.v. 3.c). In Ezek 16:53 it is paralleled by the expression “to restore the situation which prevailed earlier.” This amounts to restitutio in integrum, which is applicable to the circumstances surrounding the return of the exiles.

The famous law code of the Babylonian king Hammurabi also mandated this method of execution for various crimes a thousand years earlier. There is a satirical play on words involving their fate, “roasted them to death” (קָלָם, qalam), and the fact that that fate would become a common topic of curse (קְלָלָה, qelalah) pronounced on others in Babylon.
- Jeremiah 29:23 tn It is commonly assumed that this word is explained by the two verbal actions that follow. The word (נְבָלָה, nevalah) is rather commonly used of sins of unchastity (cf., e.g., Gen 34:7; Judg 19:23; 2 Sam 13:12), which would fit the reference to adultery. However, the word is singular and not likely to cover both actions that follow. The word is also used of the greedy act of Achan (Josh 7:15), which threatened Israel with destruction, and the churlish behavior of Nabal (1 Sam 25:25), which threatened him and his household with destruction. It is used of foolish talk in Isa 9:17 (9:16 HT) and Isa 32:6. It is possible that here it refers to a separate act, one that would have brought the death penalty from Nebuchadnezzar, i.e., the preaching of rebellion in conformity with the message of the false prophets in Jerusalem and other nations (cf. 27:9, 13). Hence it is possible that the translation should read, “This will happen because they have carried out vile rebellion in Israel. And they have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken lies while claiming my authority. They have spoken words that I did not command them to speak.”

The narrative in this section is not in strict chronological order and is somewhat elliptical. It begins with a report of a message that Jeremiah appears to have delivered directly to Shemaiah and refers to a letter that Shemaiah sent to the priest Zephaniah, encouraging him to reprimand Jeremiah for what Shemaiah considered treasonous words in his letter to the exiles (vv. 24-28; compare v. 28 with v. 5). However, Jeremiah is in Jerusalem, and Shemaiah is in Babylon. The address must then be part of a second letter Jeremiah sent to Babylon. Following this the narrative refers to Zephaniah reading Shemaiah’s letter to Jeremiah and Jeremiah sending a further letter to the captives in Babylon (vv. 29-32). This is probably not a third letter but part of the same letter in which Jeremiah reprimands Shemaiah for sending his letter to Zephaniah (vv. 25-28; the same letter referred to in v. 29). So here is the order of events. Jeremiah sent a letter to the captives counseling them to settle down in Babylon (vv. 1-23). Shemaiah sent a letter to Zephaniah asking him to reprimand Jeremiah (vv. 26-28). After Zephaniah read that letter to Jeremiah (v. 29), Jeremiah wrote a further letter to Babylon reprimanding Shemaiah (vv. 25-28, 31) and pronouncing judgment on him (v. 32). The elliptical nature of the narrative is reflected in the fact that vv. 25-27 are part of a long causal sentence that sets forth an accusation but has no corresponding main clause or announcement of judgment. This kind of construction involves a rhetorical figure (called aposiopesis) where what is begun is not finished for various rhetorical reasons. Here the sentence that is broken off is part of an announcement of judgment that is not picked up until v. 32 after a further (though related) accusation (v. 31b).
- Jeremiah 29:25 tn Heb “In your [own] name.” See the study note on 23:27 for the significance of this idiom.
- Jeremiah 29:25 tn Heb “letters.” Though GKC 397 §124.b, n. 1 denies it, this is probably a case of the plural of extension. For a similar usage see Isa 37:14, where the plural “letters” is referred to later as an “it.” Even if there were other “letters,” the focus is on the letter to Zephaniah.
- Jeremiah 29:25 sn According to Jer 52:24 and 2 Kgs 25:18, Zephaniah son of Maaseiah was second in command to the high priest. He was the high ranking priest who was sent, along with a civic official, by Zedekiah to inquire of the Lord’s will from Jeremiah on two separate occasions (Jer 21:1; 37:3).
- Jeremiah 29:25 tn The words “In your letter you said to Zephaniah” are not in the text: Heb “you sent a letter to…, saying.” The sentence has been broken up to conform better to contemporary English style, and these words have been supplied in the translation to make the transition to the address to Zephaniah in vv. 26-28.
- Jeremiah 29:26 tn Heb “in place of Jehoiada the priest.” The word “the priest” is unnecessary to the English sentence.
- Jeremiah 29:26 tc Heb “The Lord has appointed you priest in place of the priest Jehoiada to be overseer in the house of the Lord for/over.” The translation is based on a reading presupposed by several of the versions. The Hebrew text reads, “The Lord has…to be overseers [in] the house of the Lord for/over.” The reading here follows that of the Greek, Syriac, and Latin versions in reading פָּקִיד בְּבֵית (paqid bevet) in place of פְּקִדִים בֵּית (peqidim bet). There has been a confusion of the ם (mem) and בּ (bet) and a transposition of the י (yod) and ד (dalet).
- Jeremiah 29:26 sn The Hebrew term translated lunatic applies to anyone who exhibits irrational behavior. It was used for example of David, who drooled and scratched on the city gate to convince Achish not to arrest him as a politically dangerous threat (1 Sam 21:14). It was often used contemptuously of the prophets by those who wanted to play down the significance of their words (2 Kgs 9:11; Hos 9:7, and here).
- Jeremiah 29:26 tn The verb here is a good example of what IBHS 431 §26.2f calls the estimative-declarative reflexive, where a person presents himself in a certain light. For examples of this usage see 2 Sam 13:5 and Prov 13:7.
- Jeremiah 29:26 tn See the translator’s note on 20:2 for this word, which only occurs here and in 20:2-3.
- Jeremiah 29:26 tn This word only occurs here in the Hebrew Bible. All the lexicons are agreed that it refers to a collar placed around the neck. The cognate languages are the basis for this definition (see, e.g., HALOT 958-59 s.v. צִינֹק for the most complete discussion).
- Jeremiah 29:27 tn Heb “So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah…?” The rhetorical question functions as an emphatic assertion made explicit in the translation.
