Jeremías recibe amenazas de muerte
26 Al principio del reinado de Joacín(A) hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías y le dijo:
2 «Jeremías, ve al atrio de mi casa, y diles a todas las ciudades de Judá que vienen a mi casa para adorarme, todo lo que yo te ordene decirles. No retengas mi palabra. 3 Tal vez te hagan caso y cada uno de ellos se aparte de su mal camino. Así yo dejaré de hacerles el daño que he pensado hacerles por sus malas obras. 4 Diles de mi parte: “Así ha dicho el Señor: Si no me hacen caso ni ponen en práctica mi ley, la cual les expuse, 5 ni prestan atención a las palabras de mis siervos los profetas, que una y otra vez les he enviado y a los cuales no han querido oír, 6 yo haré con esta casa lo que hice con Silo,(B) y todas las naciones de la tierra usarán el nombre de esta ciudad como maldición.”»
7 Los sacerdotes y los profetas, y todo el pueblo, oyeron a Jeremías pronunciar estas palabras en la casa del Señor. 8 Y cuando Jeremías terminó de decir a todo el pueblo lo que el Señor le había ordenado decirles, los sacerdotes y los profetas y todo el pueblo le echaron mano y le espetaron:
«Has dictado tu sentencia de muerte. 9 ¿Cómo te atreves a decir, en nombre del Señor, que a esta casa le va a pasar lo mismo que a Silo, y que esta ciudad quedará asolada y sin habitantes?»
Y todo el pueblo reunido en la casa del Señor se juntó contra Jeremías.
10 Cuando los príncipes de Judá se enteraron de esto, fueron del palacio del rey a la casa del Señor y se sentaron a la entrada de la puerta nueva de la casa del Señor. 11 Entonces los sacerdotes y los profetas dijeron a los príncipes y a todo el pueblo:
«Como ustedes mismos lo han oído, este hombre ha dictado su sentencia de muerte, pues ha profetizado en contra de esta ciudad.»
12 Jeremías dijo entonces a todos los príncipes y a todo el pueblo:
«Todo lo que ustedes han oído son las palabras que el Señor me envió a profetizar contra esta casa y contra esta ciudad. 13 Así que mejoren sus caminos y sus obras, y atiendan a la voz del Señor su Dios, para que cambie de parecer y no les haga el mal que les ha anunciado. 14 En lo que a mí toca, estoy en las manos de ustedes; hagan conmigo lo que les parezca mejor y más adecuado. 15 Pero una cosa deben saber: si me matan, derramarán sangre inocente sobre ustedes, y sobre esta ciudad y sus habitantes, pues lo cierto es que el Señor me envió a decirles a ustedes todo lo que ya han oído.»
16 Los príncipes y todo el pueblo respondieron a los sacerdotes y profetas:
«Este hombre no ha hecho nada que merezca la pena de muerte, porque nos ha hablado en el nombre del Señor, nuestro Dios.»
17 Algunos de los ancianos del país se levantaron y hablaron a todo el pueblo allí reunido, y dijeron:
18 «Durante el reinado de Ezequías sobre Judá, el profeta Miqueas de Moreset habló con todo el pueblo de Judá, y le dijo de parte del Señor de los ejércitos: “Sión quedará como un campo barbechado, y Jerusalén se convertirá en un montón de ruinas. ¡En lo alto de la colina, el templo quedará convertido en un bosque!”(C) 19 Con todo, ni el rey Ezequías ni el pueblo de Judá lo mataron. Al contrario, Ezequías mostró su temor por el Señor y oró en su presencia, y el Señor ya no le hizo el mal que les había anunciado. ¿Habremos de cometer nosotros un mal tan grande contra nosotros mismos?
20 »También Urías hijo de Semaías, de Quiriat Yearín, fue un hombre que hablaba en nombre del Señor, y profetizó contra esta ciudad y contra este país, a la manera de Jeremías. 21 Cuando el rey Joacín y todos sus príncipes y grandes personajes oyeron sus palabras, el rey trató de matarlo; pero cuando Urías se enteró de esto, tuvo miedo y huyó a Egipto. 22 Entonces el rey Joacín mando a Elnatán hijo de Acbor, y a otros hombres con él, para que fueran a Egipto, 23 y éstos sacaron de Egipto a Urías y lo trajeron al rey Joacín, el cual lo mató a filo de espada y echó su cuerpo en la fosa común.»
24 Como Ajicán hijo de Safán estaba a favor de Jeremías, intervino para que no lo entregaran en las manos del pueblo y lo mataran.

26 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the Lord, saying, 2 “Thus says the Lord: ‘Stand in (B)the court of the Lord’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the Lord’s house, (C)all the words that I command you to speak to them. (D)Do not diminish a word. 3 (E)Perhaps everyone will listen and turn from his evil way, that I may (F)relent concerning the calamity which I purpose to bring on them because of the evil of their doings.’ 4 And you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: (G)“If you will not listen to Me, to walk in My law which I have set before you, 5 to heed the words of My servants the prophets (H)whom I sent to you, both rising up early and sending them (but you have not heeded), 6 then I will make this house like (I)Shiloh, and will make this city (J)a curse to all the nations of the earth.” ’ ”
7 So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. 8 Now it happened, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, “You will surely die! 9 Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be (K)desolate, without an inhabitant’?” And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.
10 When the princes of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the Lord and sat down in the entry of the New Gate of the Lord’s house. 11 And the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and all the people, saying, [a]“This man deserves to (L)die! For he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.”
12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and all the people, saying: “The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city with all the words that you have heard. 13 Now therefore, (M)amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the Lord your God; then the Lord will relent concerning the doom that He has pronounced against you. 14 As for me, here (N)I am, in your hand; do with me as seems good and [b]proper to you. 15 But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will surely bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its inhabitants; for truly the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”
16 So the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man does not deserve to die. For he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.”
17 (O)Then certain of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying: 18 (P)“Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts:
(Q)“Zion shall be plowed like a field,
Jerusalem shall become (R)heaps of ruins,
And the mountain of the [c]temple
Like the [d]bare hills of the forest.” ’
19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah ever put him to death? (S)Did he not fear the Lord and (T)seek the Lord’s favor? And the Lord (U)relented concerning the doom which He had pronounced against them. (V)But we are doing great evil against ourselves.”
20 Now there was also a man who prophesied in the name of the Lord, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath Jearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah. 21 And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid and fled, and went to Egypt. 22 Then Jehoiakim the king sent men to Egypt: Elnathan the son of Achbor, and other men who went with him to Egypt. 23 And they brought Urijah from Egypt and brought him to Jehoiakim the king, who killed him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the [e]common people.
24 Nevertheless (W)the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
