El destinado a la muerte, a la muerte;
el destinado a la espada, a la espada;
el destinado al hambre, al hambre;

¿Quién te va a compadecer, Jerusalén?
¿Quién plañirá por ti?
¿Quién dará un rodeo
para interesarse por tu bienestar?
Fuiste tú quien me rechazaste
—oráculo del Señor—,
tú quien me diste la espalda;
por eso alargué mi mano para aniquilarte,
cansado ya de compadecerte.
Los aventé con el bieldo
por las ciudades del país;
dejé a mi pueblo sin hijos,
lo destruí por completo,
pero no cambiaron de conducta.
Aumenté el número de sus viudas
más que las arenas del mar;
contra las madres con hijos jóvenes
traje devastadores en pleno mediodía;
precipité sobre ellas de repente
pánico y turbación.
La que ha parido siete hijos
desfallece exhalando suspiros;

pues me has engendrado
¿No te he fortalecido para bien?
¿No he intervenido en tu favor
cuando el enemigo te causaba
desgracias y peligros?
12 ¿Puede romperse el hierro,
el hierro del norte y el bronce?
13 Voy a entregar al pillaje
tu riqueza y tus tesoros
por los pecados que has cometido
en todo tu territorio.
14 Haré que sirvas a tus enemigos
en un país desconocido,
pues mi cólera arde como fuego
y va a prender en ustedes.
15 Tú lo sabes, Señor:
No me olvides y ocúpate de mí,
véngame de quienes me persiguen.
No descargues mucho tiempo tu ira sobre mí,
ya sabes que soporto oprobios por ti.
16 Si encontraba tus palabras las devoraba:
tus palabras me servían de gozo,
eran la alegría de mi corazón.
¡Yo era reconocido por tu nombre:
Señor, Dios del universo!
17 Nunca andaba entre la gente
amiga de la juerga y del disfrute;
me obligabas a andar solo,
pues me habías llenado de furor.
18 ¿Por qué dura tanto mi dolor
y mi herida se vuelve incurable,
imposible de sanar?
Te me has vuelto cauce engañoso,
cuyas aguas son inconstantes.
19 Por eso, así dice el Señor:
Si vuelves, te dejaré volver
y estarás a mi servicio;
si quitas la escoria del metal,
yo hablaré por tu boca.
Ellos volverán a ti,
pero no vuelvas tú a ellos.
20 Haré que seas para este pueblo
muralla de bronce inexpugnable.
Lucharán contra ti,
pero no te vencerán,
pues yo estoy contigo
para ayudarte y salvarte
—oráculo del Señor—.
21 Te salvaré de manos de los malvados,
te rescataré del puño de los violentos.

Los cuatro castigos

15 Dios me dijo:

«Jeremías, aleja de mí a los israelitas. Diles que se vayan. ¡Yo no voy a perdonarlos! Y si acaso te preguntan a dónde ir, respóndeles:

“Los que merecen la muerte, irán a la muerte;
los que merecen la guerra, morirán en la guerra;
los que merecen el hambre, morirán de hambre;

me rechazaste; me traicionaste.
así que te atacaré y te destruiré;
te arrojaré fuera de la ciudad,
como si fueras paja en el viento.
¡Voy a dejarte sin habitantes
porque no quisiste volverte a mí!
Habrá tantas viudas en el pueblo,
como arena hay en el mar;
¡a plena luz del día destruiré
a las madres de hijos jóvenes!
De repente enviaré contra ellas
la angustia y el terror.
Las que hayan tenido muchos hijos
se desmayarán y perderán la vida.
Quedarán humilladas y en vergüenza,
pues la brillante luz del día
se les volverá densa oscuridad.
¡Yo dejaré que sus enemigos
maten a los que queden con vida!
Les juro que así será».

Lamento de Jeremías

10 Jeremías dijo:

«¡Sufro mucho, madre mía!
¡Mejor no hubiera yo nacido!
A nadie le hice daño,
pero todos me maldicen
y me acusan de rebelde.

11 »Dios prometió protegerme
en momentos difíciles,
y hacer que mis enemigos
me pidieran compasión».

Esclavizados en un país ajeno

12 Dios le dijo a su pueblo:

«No hay quien pueda vencer
a los ejércitos de Asiria y Babilonia.
13 Ustedes han pecado tanto
que yo les entregaré a sus enemigos
todas sus riquezas y tesoros.
14 Estoy tan enojado con ustedes
que los quemaré como el fuego.
Los haré esclavos de sus enemigos
en un país que no conocen».

Queja de Jeremías

15 Jeremías dijo:

«Dios mío, tú lo sabes todo;
tú bien sabes que, por ti,
me insultan a todas horas.
¡Acuérdate de mí, y ven a ayudarme!
¡No te quedes cruzado de brazos
y castiga a los que me persiguen,
antes de que me maten!

16 »Todopoderoso Dios de Israel,
cuando tú me hablaste,
tomé en serio tu mensaje.
Mi corazón se llenó de alegría
al escuchar tus palabras,
porque yo soy tuyo.

17 »Yo no ando de fiesta en fiesta,
ni me interesa divertirme.
Prefiero estar solo, porque estoy contigo
y comparto tu odio por el pecado.
18 ¿Por qué tengo, entonces,
que sufrir este dolor constante?
¿Por qué no sanan mis heridas?
Realmente, me decepcionas;
eres, para mí, como un arroyo seco;
¡como una fuente sin agua!»

Dios acompaña a Jeremías

19 Dios me contestó:

«Yo soy el Dios de Israel.
Si te vuelves a mí,
yo calmaré tu dolor
y podrás de nuevo servirme.
Si dejas de hablar tonterías,
y comienzas a anunciar
lo que realmente vale la pena,
entonces tú serás mi profeta.
No le hagas caso al pueblo;
son ellos quienes deben escucharte.

20-21 »Yo haré que seas para este pueblo
como un fuerte muro de bronce.
Los malvados pelearán contra ti,
pero no te podrán vencer,
porque yo estaré contigo
para librarte de su poder.
¡Yo te salvaré de esos tiranos!
Te juro que así lo haré».

15 Then the Lord said to me: “Even if Moses(A) and Samuel(B) were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people.(C) Send them away from my presence!(D) Let them go! And if they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘Those destined for death, to death;
those for the sword, to the sword;(E)
those for starvation, to starvation;(F)
those for captivity, to captivity.’(G)

“I will send four kinds of destroyers(H) against them,” declares the Lord, “the sword(I) to kill and the dogs(J) to drag away and the birds(K) and the wild animals to devour and destroy.(L) I will make them abhorrent(M) to all the kingdoms of the earth(N) because of what Manasseh(O) son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.

“Who will have pity(P) on you, Jerusalem?
    Who will mourn for you?
    Who will stop to ask how you are?
You have rejected(Q) me,” declares the Lord.
    “You keep on backsliding.
So I will reach out(R) and destroy you;
    I am tired of holding back.(S)
I will winnow(T) them with a winnowing fork
    at the city gates of the land.
I will bring bereavement(U) and destruction on my people,(V)
    for they have not changed their ways.(W)
I will make their widows(X) more numerous
    than the sand of the sea.
At midday I will bring a destroyer(Y)
    against the mothers of their young men;
suddenly I will bring down on them
    anguish and terror.(Z)
The mother of seven will grow faint(AA)
    and breathe her last.(AB)
Her sun will set while it is still day;
    she will be disgraced(AC) and humiliated.
I will put the survivors to the sword(AD)
    before their enemies,”(AE)
declares the Lord.

10 Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,(AF)
    a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!(AG)
I have neither lent(AH) nor borrowed,
    yet everyone curses(AI) me.

11 The Lord said,

“Surely I will deliver you(AJ) for a good purpose;
    surely I will make your enemies plead(AK) with you
    in times of disaster and times of distress.

12 “Can a man break iron—
    iron from the north(AL)—or bronze?

13 “Your wealth(AM) and your treasures
    I will give as plunder,(AN) without charge,(AO)
because of all your sins
    throughout your country.(AP)
14 I will enslave you to your enemies
    in[a] a land you do not know,(AQ)
for my anger will kindle a fire(AR)
    that will burn against you.”

15 Lord, you understand;
    remember me and care for me.
    Avenge me on my persecutors.(AS)
You are long-suffering(AT)—do not take me away;
    think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.(AU)
16 When your words came, I ate(AV) them;
    they were my joy and my heart’s delight,(AW)
for I bear your name,(AX)
    Lord God Almighty.
17 I never sat(AY) in the company of revelers,
    never made merry with them;
I sat alone because your hand(AZ) was on me
    and you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unending
    and my wound grievous and incurable?(BA)
You are to me like a deceptive brook,
    like a spring that fails.(BB)

19 Therefore this is what the Lord says:

“If you repent, I will restore you
    that you may serve(BC) me;
if you utter worthy, not worthless, words,
    you will be my spokesman.(BD)
Let this people turn to you,
    but you must not turn to them.
20 I will make you a wall(BE) to this people,
    a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you
    but will not overcome(BF) you,
for I am with you
    to rescue and save you,”(BG)
declares the Lord.
21 “I will save(BH) you from the hands of the wicked(BI)
    and deliver(BJ) you from the grasp of the cruel.”(BK)

  1. Jeremiah 15:14 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint and Syriac (see also 17:4); most Hebrew manuscripts I will cause your enemies to bring you / into

15 Then said the Lord unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.

And it shall come to pass, if they say unto thee, Whither shall we go forth? then thou shalt tell them, Thus saith the Lord; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.

And I will appoint over them four kinds, saith the Lord: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy.

And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.

For who shall have pity upon thee, O Jerusalem? or who shall bemoan thee? or who shall go aside to ask how thou doest?

Thou hast forsaken me, saith the Lord, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting.

And I will fan them with a fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children, I will destroy my people since they return not from their ways.

Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a spoiler at noonday: I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city.

She that hath borne seven languisheth: she hath given up the ghost; her sun is gone down while it was yet day: she hath been ashamed and confounded: and the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, saith the Lord.

10 Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me.

11 The Lord said, Verily it shall be well with thy remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to entreat thee well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.

12 Shall iron break the northern iron and the steel?

13 Thy substance and thy treasures will I give to the spoil without price, and that for all thy sins, even in all thy borders.

14 And I will make thee to pass with thine enemies into a land which thou knowest not: for a fire is kindled in mine anger, which shall burn upon you.

15 O Lord, thou knowest: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke.

16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.

17 I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation.

18 Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar, and as waters that fail?

19 Therefore thus saith the Lord, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.

20 And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

21 And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.

The Lord Will Not Relent

15 Then the Lord said to me, (A)Even if (B)Moses and (C)Samuel stood before Me, My [a]mind would not be favorable toward this people. Cast them out of My sight, and let them go forth. And it shall be, if they say to you, ‘Where should we go?’ then you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord:

(D)“Such as are for death, to death;
And such as are for the sword, to the sword;
And such as are for the famine, to the famine;
And such as are for the (E)captivity, to the captivity.” ’

“And I will (F)appoint over them four forms of destruction,” says the Lord: “the sword to slay, the dogs to drag, (G)the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy. I will hand them over to (H)trouble, to all kingdoms of the earth, because of (I)Manasseh the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.

“For who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem?
Or who will bemoan you?
Or who will turn aside to ask how you are doing?
(J)You have forsaken Me,” says the Lord,
“You have (K)gone backward.
Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you;
(L)I am [b]weary of relenting!
And I will winnow them with a winnowing fan in the gates of the land;
I will (M)bereave them of children;
I will destroy My people,
Since they (N)do not return from their ways.
Their widows will be increased to Me more than the sand of the seas;
I will bring against them,
Against the mother of the young men,
A plunderer at noonday;
I will cause anguish and terror to fall on them (O)suddenly.

“She(P) languishes who has borne seven;
She has breathed her last;
(Q)Her sun has gone down
While it was yet day;
She has been ashamed and confounded.
And the remnant of them I will deliver to the sword
Before their enemies,” says the Lord.

Jeremiah’s Dejection

10 (R)Woe is me, my mother,
That you have borne me,
A man of strife and a man of contention to the whole [c]earth!
I have neither lent for interest,
Nor have men lent to me for interest.
Every one of them curses me.

11 The Lord said:

“Surely it will be well with your remnant;
Surely I will cause (S)the enemy to intercede with you
In the time of adversity and in the time of affliction.
12 Can anyone break iron,
The northern iron and the bronze?
13 Your wealth and your treasures
I will give as (T)plunder without price,
Because of all your sins,
Throughout your territories.
14 And I will [d]make you cross over with your enemies
(U)Into a land which you do not know;
For a (V)fire is kindled in My anger,
Which shall burn upon you.”

15 O Lord, (W)You know;
Remember me and [e]visit me,
And (X)take vengeance for me on my persecutors.
In Your enduring patience, do not take me away.
Know that (Y)for Your sake I have suffered rebuke.
16 Your words were found, and I (Z)ate them,
And (AA)Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart;
For I am called by Your name,
O Lord God of hosts.
17 (AB)I did not sit in the assembly of the mockers,
Nor did I rejoice;
I sat alone because of Your hand,
For You have filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my (AC)pain perpetual
And my wound incurable,
Which refuses to be healed?
Will You surely be to me (AD)like an unreliable stream,
As waters that [f]fail?

The Lord Reassures Jeremiah

19 Therefore thus says the Lord:

(AE)“If you return,
Then I will bring you back;
You shall (AF)stand before Me;
If you (AG)take out the precious from the vile,
You shall be as My mouth.
Let them return to you,
But you must not return to them.
20 And I will make you to this people a fortified bronze (AH)wall;
And they will fight against you,
But (AI)they shall not prevail against you;
For I am with you to save you
And deliver you,” says the Lord.
21 “I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked,
And I will redeem you from the grip of the terrible.”
