Dios Habla Hoy
La gran sequía
14 Por causa de la sequía, el Señor se dirigió a Jeremías, y le dijo:
2 «Judá llora de tristeza,
sus ciudades están afligidas,
la gente está tendida por el suelo.
Jerusalén lanza gritos de dolor.
3 Los ricos mandan a sus criados por agua;
éstos van a las cisternas, pero no la encuentran,
y vuelven con sus cántaros vacíos;
defraudados y llenos de vergüenza,
se cubren la cabeza.
4 Los campesinos se sienten defraudados
y se cubren la cabeza,
porque falta la lluvia
y la tierra está reseca.
5 Aun las ciervas, en el campo,
abandonan sus crías recién nacidas,
porque no hay hierba que comer.
6 Los asnos salvajes,
parados en las lomas desiertas,
toman aire como los chacales;
y la vista se les nubla
porque no hay pasto que comer.»
El profeta invoca al Señor en nombre del pueblo
7 ¡Señor, aunque nuestros pecados nos acusan,
actúa por el honor de tu nombre!
Muchas veces te hemos sido infieles,
hemos pecado contra ti.
8 Esperanza de Israel,
salvador nuestro en tiempos difíciles,
¿por qué te portas como un extraño en el país,
como un viajero que sólo se queda a pasar la noche?
9 ¿Por qué estás como un hombre aturdido,
como un guerrero que no puede ayudar?
Pero, Señor, tú estás en medio de nosotros,
todos saben que somos tu pueblo;
¡no nos abandones!
10 El Señor dice esto acerca del pueblo de Israel: «A este pueblo le encanta andar siempre de un lado para otro. Por eso no lo miro con agrado. Ahora voy a acordarme de sus pecados y a pedirle cuenta de ellos.»
11 El Señor me dijo: «No me ruegues por el bienestar de este pueblo. 12 Por mucho que ayune, no escucharé sus súplicas; por muchos holocaustos y ofrendas de cereales que me traiga, no lo miraré con agrado. Voy a destruirlo con guerra, hambre y peste.»
13 Y yo le contesté: «Pero, Señor; los profetas le están diciendo al pueblo que no va a haber guerra ni hambre, y que tú le vas a conceder una paz duradera en este lugar.»
14 Entonces el Señor me respondió: «Si eso dicen en mi nombre los profetas, es que están mintiendo. Yo no los he enviado, ni les he dado ninguna orden, y ni siquiera les he hablado. Son revelaciones falsas, visiones engañosas, inventos de su propia fantasía. Esto es lo que les anuncian esos profetas. 15 Pues yo, el Señor, digo de esos profetas que pretenden hablar en mi nombre sin que yo los haya enviado, y que dicen que no va a haber guerra ni hambre en este país: esos profetas morirán por la guerra y el hambre. 16 Y el pueblo al que ellos se dirigen, morirá también por la guerra y el hambre, con sus mujeres, sus hijos y sus hijas. Los cadáveres serán arrojados a las calles de Jerusalén, y no habrá quien los entierre. Así les haré pagar su maldad. 17 Di al pueblo lo siguiente:
“Que broten lágrimas de mis ojos
día y noche, sin cesar,
por la terrible desgracia de mi pueblo,
por la gravedad de su herida.
18 Salgo al campo, y veo los cadáveres
de los muertos en batalla;
entro en la ciudad, y veo gente
que se está muriendo de hambre,
Aun los profetas y los sacerdotes
se van a un país desconocido.”»
El profeta se dirige al Señor
19 Señor, ¿has rechazado del todo a Judá?
¿Te has cansado de la ciudad de Sión?
¿Por qué nos heriste irremediablemente?
Esperábamos prosperidad,
pero nada bueno nos ha llegado.
Esperábamos salud,
pero sólo hay espanto.
20 Reconocemos, Señor, nuestra maldad
y la culpa de nuestros antepasados;
hemos pecado contra ti.
21 ¡Por el honor de tu nombre, no nos rechaces;
no trates con desprecio a la ciudad
donde está tu glorioso trono!
¡Recuerda la alianza que hiciste con nosotros,
no faltes a ella!
22 ¿Hay acaso entre los ídolos paganos
alguno que pueda hacer llover?
¿Acaso el cielo envía los aguaceros por sí mismo?
¡No, Señor y Dios nuestro!
Tú eres quien los envía,
tú eres quien hace todas estas cosas;
¡por eso esperamos en ti!

The Great Drought
14 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:(A)
2 Judah mourns,
and her gates languish;
they lie in gloom on the ground,
and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.(B)
3 Her[a] nobles send their servants for water;
they come to the cisterns;
they find no water;
they return with their vessels empty.
They are ashamed and dismayed
and cover their heads,(C)
4 because the ground is cracked.
Because there has been no rain on the land,
the farmers are dismayed;
they cover their heads.(D)
5 Even the doe in the field forsakes her newborn fawn
because there is no grass.
6 The wild asses stand on the bare heights;[b]
they pant for air like jackals;
their eyes fail
because there is no herbage.(E)
7 Although our iniquities testify against us,
act, O Lord, for your name’s sake;
our rebellions indeed are many,
and we have sinned against you.(F)
8 O hope of Israel,
its savior in time of trouble,
why should you be like a stranger in the land,
like a traveler turning aside for the night?(G)
9 Why should you be like someone confused,
like a mighty warrior who cannot give help?
Yet you, O Lord, are in the midst of us,
and we are called by your name;
do not forsake us!(H)
10 Thus says the Lord concerning this people:
Truly they have loved to wander;
they have not restrained their feet;
therefore the Lord does not accept them;
now he will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins.(I)
11 The Lord said to me: Do not pray for the welfare of this people.(J) 12 Although they fast, I do not hear their cry, and although they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I do not accept them, but by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence I consume them.(K)
Denunciation of Lying Prophets
13 Then I said: “Ah, Lord God! Here are the prophets saying to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you true peace in this place.’ ”(L) 14 And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name; I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.(M) 15 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name though I did not send them and who say, ‘Sword and famine shall not come on this land’: By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed.(N) 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword. There shall be no one to bury them—themselves, their wives, their sons, and their daughters—for I will pour out their wickedness upon them.”(O)
17 You shall say to them this word:
Let my eyes run down with tears night and day,
and let them not cease,
for the virgin daughter of my people is struck down with a crushing blow,
with a very grievous wound.(P)
18 If I go out into the field,
look—those killed by the sword!
And if I enter the city,
look—those sick with[c] famine!
For both prophet and priest ply their trade throughout the land
and have no knowledge.(Q)
The People Plead for Mercy
19 Have you completely rejected Judah?
Does your heart loathe Zion?
Why have you struck us down
so that there is no healing for us?
We look for peace but find no good,
for a time of healing, but there is terror instead.(R)
20 We acknowledge our wickedness, O Lord,
the iniquity of our ancestors,
for we have sinned against you.(S)
21 Do not spurn us, for your name’s sake;
do not dishonor your glorious throne;
remember and do not break your covenant with us.(T)
22 Can any idols of the nations bring rain,
or can the heavens give showers?
Is it not you, O Lord our God?
We set our hope on you,
for it is you who do all this.(U)
