13 El Señor me dijo: «Ve y cómprate un cinturón de lino y póntelo en la cintura, pero no lo mojes con agua.» 2 Yo compré el cinturón, como el Señor me lo había ordenado, y me lo puse en la cintura. 3 Entonces me habló de nuevo el Señor y me dijo: 4 «Toma el cinturón que compraste y que tienes puesto, vete al río Éufrates y escóndelo allí, en la grieta de una roca.» 5 Fui entonces al río Éufrates y lo escondí, como el Señor me lo había ordenado.
6 Al cabo de mucho tiempo, el Señor me dijo: «Ve al río Éufrates y trae el cinturón que te ordené que escondieras allá.» 7 Fui al río Éufrates, busqué en la tierra y saqué el cinturón del sitio en que lo había escondido, pero ya estaba podrido y no servía para nada.
8 Entonces el Señor se dirigió a mí una vez más, 9 y me dijo: «De esta misma manera destruiré el orgullo de Judá y Jerusalén. 10 Este pueblo malvado se niega a obedecer mis órdenes y sigue tercamente las inclinaciones de su corazón. Se ha ido tras otros dioses, para servirlos y adorarlos. Es como ese cinturón, que no sirve para nada. 11 Así como uno se aprieta el cinturón alrededor de la cintura, así tuve a todo el pueblo de Israel y a todo el pueblo de Judá muy unidos a mí, para que fueran mi pueblo y dieran a conocer mi nombre, y fueran mi honor y mi gloria. Pero no me obedecieron. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.

12 »Diles también: “El Señor, el Dios de Israel, dice: Cualquier vasija puede llenarse de vino.” Los israelitas te van a contestar: “¿Acaso no sabemos de sobra que cualquier vasija puede llenarse de vino?” 13 Y tú les responderás: “El Señor dice: Voy a emborrachar a todos los que viven en este país; a los reyes que se sientan en el trono de David, a los sacerdotes, a los profetas y a todos los que viven en Jerusalén. 14 Luego los romperé como vasijas, unos contra otros, padres e hijos por igual. No les tendré compasión; los destruiré sin misericordia y sin piedad. Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.”»
Advertencia a Israel
15 ¡Israelitas, el Señor ha hablado!
No sean orgullosos, escúchenlo con atención.
16 Honren al Señor su Dios,
antes que él haga llegar la oscuridad
y tropiecen ustedes en los montes tenebrosos;
antes que él convierta en tinieblas,
en pesada sombra,
la luz que ustedes esperaban.
17 Si ustedes no hacen caso,
lloraré en secreto a causa de su orgullo;
de mis ojos correrán las lágrimas,
porque se llevan preso el rebaño del Señor.
Mensaje de parte de Dios para el rey
18 «Di al rey y a la reina madre:
“Bajen del trono, siéntense en el suelo,
pues de su cabeza ha caído
la corona que los adornaba.”
19 Las ciudades del Négueb están sitiadas;
nadie puede pasar.
Todos los de Judá fueron llevados al destierro,
a un destierro total.
20 Alcen la vista y miren
cómo viene del norte el enemigo.
¿Dónde está el rebaño que yo te había confiado,
ese rebaño que era tu orgullo?

21 »¿Y qué vas a decir, Jerusalén,
cuando tengas que ser gobernada
por gente que tú misma instruiste?
Te vendrán dolores
como a mujer de parto.
22 Y si preguntas por qué te pasa esto,
debes saber que es por tus graves pecados;
¡por eso te han desnudado
y han abusado de ti!
23 ¿Puede un negro cambiar de color?
¿Puede un leopardo quitarse sus manchas?
Pues tampoco ustedes, acostumbrados al mal,
pueden hacer lo bueno.
24 Por eso voy a dispersarlos a ustedes
como a paja que arrastra el viento del desierto.
25 Ése es tu destino, Israel,
eso has merecido que yo te haga.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
Pues te olvidaste de mí
y pusiste tu confianza en falsos ídolos.
26 Yo también te voy a desnudar del todo
y a exponerte a la vergüenza.
27 He visto tu pasión, tus adulterios,
tu vergonzosa conducta de prostituta,
tus repugnantes acciones
en las colinas y en los campos.
¡Ay de ti, Jerusalén!,
¿cuánto tiempo seguirás estando impura?»

13 Thus saith the Lord unto me, Go and get thee a linen girdle, and put it upon thy loins, and put it not in water.
2 So I got a girdle according to the word of the Lord, and put it on my loins.
3 And the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying,
4 Take the girdle that thou hast got, which is upon thy loins, and arise, go to Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock.
5 So I went, and hid it by Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me.
6 And it came to pass after many days, that the Lord said unto me, Arise, go to Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.
7 Then I went to Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it: and, behold, the girdle was marred, it was profitable for nothing.
8 Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
9 Thus saith the Lord, After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem.
10 This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.
11 For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the Lord; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.
12 Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word; Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine?
13 Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David's throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.
14 And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the Lord: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.
15 Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the Lord hath spoken.
16 Give glory to the Lord your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.
17 But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the Lord's flock is carried away captive.
18 Say unto the king and to the queen, Humble yourselves, sit down: for your principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory.
19 The cities of the south shall be shut up, and none shall open them: Judah shall be carried away captive all of it, it shall be wholly carried away captive.
20 Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north: where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock?
21 What wilt thou say when he shall punish thee? for thou hast taught them to be captains, and as chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a woman in travail?
22 And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.
23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.
24 Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness.
25 This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the Lord; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.
26 Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face, that thy shame may appear.
27 I have seen thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be?

A Linen Undergarment
13 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and purchase a linen undergarment[a] for yourself. Put it around your waist. Do not let it touch water.” 2 So I bought an undergarment as the Lord said, and I put it on.
3 Then the word of the Lord came to me a second time: 4 “Take the undergarment you purchased, the one you are wearing around your waist, and go right now to Perath[b] and hide it there in a cleft in the rocks.” 5 So I went and hid it at Perath, as the Lord commanded me.
6 Many days later the Lord said to me, “Go to Perath and retrieve the undergarment I told you to hide there.” 7 So I went to Perath and searched. I took the undergarment from the place where I had hidden it, but now it was ruined and worthless.
8 Then the word of the Lord came to me.
9 This is what the Lord says. I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem in the same way. 10 These wicked people refuse to listen to me. They follow their own stubborn hearts. They follow after other gods by serving them and worshipping them. They are all like this worthless undergarment. 11 Just as an undergarment fits tightly around a man’s waist, in the same way I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the Lord. I did this so that they would be my people and so that they would bring praise and honor to my name, but they would not listen.
The Broken Wine Jar
12 Give this message to them.
This is what the Lord God of Israel says: “Every clay jar will be filled with wine.” Then they will say to you, “We know that every clay jar will be filled with wine.”
13 So say to them, “This is what the Lord says. I will certainly make everyone who lives in this land drunk. The kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all those who live in Jerusalem will become drunk. 14 Then I will smash them to pieces—a man against his brother, fathers, and sons, declares the Lord. I will not spare them. I will destroy them without pity or compassion.”
15 Listen and pay attention!
Do not be arrogant, for the Lord has spoken.
16 Honor the Lord your God before he brings darkness,
and before your feet stumble on the mountains at dusk.
You will look for light,
but he will turn it into the shadow of death
and change it into deep darkness.
17 If you will not listen,
I will cry for you in secret because of your arrogance.
My eyes will weep bitterly and overflow with tears,
because the Lord’s flock will be taken captive.
18 Say to the king and to the queen mother,
“Come down from your thrones,
because your crowns will fall from your heads.”[c]
19 The cities of the Negev are under siege,
and no one can get through to them.
All of Judah will be taken into exile.
They will be carried away completely.
20 Look up and see those who are coming from the north.
Where is the flock entrusted to you,
the sheep you were so proud of?
The Future of Jerusalem
21 What will you say when associates whom you yourself have taught are appointed as masters over you? Won’t pain seize you like a woman in labor? 22 If you ask yourself, “Why has this happened to me?” you should know that it is because of your great guilt that your skirt has been torn off, and you have been violated.
23 Can an Ethiopian[d] change the color of his skin?
Can a leopard change its spots?
Just as little can you, who are disciples of evil, do good.
24 I will scatter you like chaff blown by the desert wind.
25 This is your lot.
This is what I have assigned to you,
declares the Lord.
This will take place because you have forgotten me
and trusted in falsehood.
26 I myself will lift your skirt over your head,
so that your shame can be seen—
27 your adulteries, your lust-filled neighing,
and your shameless prostitution.
I have seen your detestable acts on the hills and in the countryside.
Woe to you, Jerusalem!
You are unclean.
After this, will you ever be clean again?

- Jeremiah 13:1 Suggested translations include loincloth, shorts, wrap, and belt. It was probably a skirt-like garment reaching from the waist to the knees.
- Jeremiah 13:4 Or the Euphrates. The Hebrew name Perath is often used in the Old Testament as the name for the river Euphrates, which was about 350 miles away. Was Jeremiah told to make the long journey to the Euphrates or to go to a nearby location whose name served as a symbol of the Euphrates? We do not have enough information to answer the question.
- Jeremiah 13:18 The Greek and other versions support the reading fall from your heads. The meaning of the reading in the Hebrew text is uncertain.
- Jeremiah 13:23 Hebrew Cushite. Cush was the territory just south of Egypt, present-day Sudan. Cushite refers to black Africans.
