バビロンについてのメッセージ
50 次は、主が預言者エレミヤを通して、カルデヤ人の国バビロンについて語ったことばです。
2 「全世界の人に、バビロンは滅びると告げなさい。
その国の神であるメロダクは恥をかく。
3 北から一つの国が攻め上り、この地を二度と人が住めないほど徹底的に荒らすからだ。人も家畜も逃げる。 4 その時、イスラエルとユダの民は泣きながら、彼らの神であるわたしを尋ね求める。 5 シオン（エルサレム）に通じる道を尋ね、故国をめざして帰る。『二度と破られない永遠の誓いを立て、主にしっかり結びつこう』と、彼らは言う。 6 わたしの民は迷った羊だ。羊飼いたちはとんでもない方向に彼らを連れて行き、山の中に置き去りにした。彼らは道に迷い、どうすれば元の場所へ帰れるかと途方にくれた。 7 彼らを見つけた者は彼らをさんざん食い物にし、『彼らを好きなように料理しよう。彼らは、正義の神であり、彼らの先祖の望みであった主に罪を犯したのだから』と言った。
8 しかし今度は、
カルデヤ人の国バビロンから逃げ出すのだ。
わたしの民を故国に連れ帰りなさい。
9 わたしは北方の強い国々の軍隊を奮い立たせ、
バビロンに敵対させるからだ。
バビロンは滅びる。
敵の矢は的をめがけて飛んで来て、一本もはずれない。
10 バビロンは丸裸になる。
11 わたしの民から身ぐるみはぎ取ったカルデヤ人よ。
おまえたちは喜び、
みずみずしい草の茂る放牧地の牛のように肥え太り、
種馬のようにいなないても、
12 おまえたちの母は恥をかいて顔を伏せる。
おまえたちは一番弱い国となり、
荒野となり、乾ききった砂漠となるからだ。
13 わたしの怒りによって、
バビロンはさびれた荒れ地となる。
そこを通り過ぎる者は血の気を失い、
そのすべての傷を見てあざける。
14 周りを囲むすべての国々よ、
バビロンと戦う準備をしなさい。
弓を引く者は、バビロンをめがけて矢を放て。
彼は神に逆らって罪を犯したのだから、矢を惜しまず、
容赦なく射かけるのだ。
15 四方から、いっせいにときの声を上げなさい。
城壁はくずれ、バビロンは降伏する。
わたしはとうとう復讐した。
バビロンがしたとおりのことを、やり返しなさい。
16 畑で働く外国人は、みな逃げなさい。
敵の軍勢が攻めて来るから、
自分の国に走って帰りなさい。
17 イスラエル人はライオンに追われる羊のようだ。初めはアッシリヤの王がその肉を食い、次にはバビロンのネブカデネザル王が、骨まで食いつくした。」 18 そこで、イスラエルの神である天の軍勢の主は、こう言います。「わたしは今度は、アッシリヤを罰したように、バビロンの王とその国に罰を加える。 19 わたしはイスラエル人を故国に連れ戻す。彼らはカルメルとバシャンで草を食べ、もう一度、エフライムとギルアデの山々で幸せに暮らすようになる。 20 その日には、イスラエルにもユダにも、罪は一つも見当たらなくなる。わたしは残った者たちを赦すからだ。
21 わたしの勇士たちよ。
メラタイム（南部バビロニヤ）と
ペコデ（東部バビロニヤ）に攻め上りなさい。
わたしがさばこうとしている反逆の国バビロンに、
威勢よく進撃しなさい。
命令しておいたとおり、彼らを根絶やしするのだ。
22 国中に戦いの雄たけび、
大きな破滅の叫びが上がるように。
23 地上のすべての国々を打った強力な金槌は、
粉々になった。
バビロンは国々の中で、荒れ果てた地となった。
24 バビロンよ。
わたしがおまえに罠をしかけ、おまえを捕まえた。
おまえがわたしに戦いをいどんだからだ。
25 わたしは兵器庫を開き、
敵に怒りを表そうと武器を取り出した。
バビロンに降りかかった恐怖は、
天の軍勢の主であるわたしが指図したものだ。
26 遠くから来てバビロンに攻めかかりなさい。
穀物倉に押し入り、城壁と家々を壊して高く積み上げ、
とことん荒らすのだ。
めぼしいものは何一つ残してはならない。
27 家畜にまで、のろいが下るように。
それを一頭残らず殺すのだ。
バビロンの荒廃の時がきたのだから。
28 だが、わたしの民は逃げ出す。
彼らは故国に逃れ、
彼らの神であるわたしが怒りに燃え、
神殿を壊した者たちに仕返ししたと報告する。
29 弓を引く者をバビロンに呼び集めなさい。
この都を包囲し、
蟻一匹はい出るすきもないようにするのだ。
バビロンがほかの国々にしたとおりに報いなさい。
彼らはイスラエルのきよい神であるわたしに
大言壮語し、公然と反抗したからだ。
30 若者は路上に倒れて死に、勇士は皆殺しになる。
31 思い上がっている者たちよ。
わたしはおまえたちの敵になる。
おまえたちのさばきの日が、ついにきたのだ。
32 高ぶる国よ。
おまえはつまずいて倒れるが、だれも起こしてくれない。
わたしが町々に火をつけ、何もかも灰にするからだ。」
33 天の軍勢の主はこう言います。「捕虜になったイスラエルとユダの民は虐待されている。主人たちは彼らを釈放しようとしない。 34 だが、彼らを救い出す者は強く、その名は天の軍勢の主だ。わたしは彼らの訴えを聞き、彼らが自由の身となり、再びイスラエルの地で平穏に暮らせるように取り計らう。だが、バビロンの住民に安息はない。
35 破滅の剣がカルデヤ人に切りかかる。
その剣はバビロンの住民を、
重立った者も知恵のある者も区別なしに切りまくる。
36 賢い助言者も愚かになり、
何ものをも恐れない勇士もあわてふためく。
37 戦いが起こって、馬も戦車ものみ尽くす。
同盟を結んだほかの国々の者たちは、
女のように弱くなり、財宝はみな略奪される。
38 そればかりか、水の補給さえなくなる。
どうして、このようになるのだろうか。
国中に神々の像が立ち、
民が熱心に偶像を慕っているからだ。
39 バビロンの都は、だちょうや山犬、荒野の野獣の住みかとなり、人は二度と住みつかない。永久に荒れ果てた地となる。 40 わたしは、ソドムとゴモラとその近くの町々を滅ぼしたように、バビロンを滅ぼす。これらの町々に人が住まなくなったように、バビロンにも人が寄りつかなくなる。」
41 北から大軍が押し寄せて来ます。神が多くの国から呼び集めた王たちが、この軍隊を指揮しています。 42 彼らは完全武装していて、残忍で容赦しません。その雄たけびは、海辺に打ち寄せる波のように響き渡ります。バビロンよ。彼らは戦いのしたくを整え、馬に乗って攻めかかります。 43 バビロンの王は、敵が来たという報告を受けると、肩を落としました。産みの苦しみをしている女のように、恐怖の苦痛に取りつかれたからです。 44 「ヨルダンの密林から出て、草を食べている羊に飛びかかるライオンのような侵略者が、彼らに突然襲いかかるようにする。彼らを守る者たちを追い払い、わたしの気に入った指導者を立てる。わたしのような者がいるだろうか。わたしの決めたことに反抗する支配者が、どこにいるだろうか。だれがわたしを呼びつけて、説明を求めることができようか。 45 カルデヤ人の国バビロンへの、わたしの計画を聞きなさい。
小さな子どもたちでさえ、奴隷になって引かれて行く。
身の毛もよだつほど恐ろしいことではないか。
46 バビロンの倒れる地響きで、全地は揺れ動く。
その断末魔の叫びは、世界の隅々に届く。」

A Message About Babylon(A)
50 This is the word the Lord spoke through Jeremiah the prophet concerning Babylon(B) and the land of the Babylonians[a]:
2 “Announce and proclaim(C) among the nations,
lift up a banner(D) and proclaim it;
keep nothing back, but say,
‘Babylon will be captured;(E)
Bel(F) will be put to shame,(G)
Marduk(H) filled with terror.
Her images will be put to shame
and her idols(I) filled with terror.’
3 A nation from the north(J) will attack her
and lay waste her land.
No one will live(K) in it;
both people and animals(L) will flee away.
4 “In those days, at that time,”
declares the Lord,
“the people of Israel and the people of Judah together(M)
will go in tears(N) to seek(O) the Lord their God.
5 They will ask the way(P) to Zion
and turn their faces toward it.
They will come(Q) and bind themselves to the Lord
in an everlasting covenant(R)
that will not be forgotten.
6 “My people have been lost sheep;(S)
their shepherds(T) have led them astray(U)
and caused them to roam on the mountains.
They wandered over mountain and hill(V)
and forgot their own resting place.(W)
7 Whoever found them devoured(X) them;
their enemies said, ‘We are not guilty,(Y)
for they sinned against the Lord, their verdant pasture,
the Lord, the hope(Z) of their ancestors.’
8 “Flee(AA) out of Babylon;(AB)
leave the land of the Babylonians,
and be like the goats that lead the flock.
9 For I will stir(AC) up and bring against Babylon
an alliance of great nations(AD) from the land of the north.(AE)
They will take up their positions against her,
and from the north she will be captured.(AF)
Their arrows(AG) will be like skilled warriors
who do not return empty-handed.
10 So Babylonia[b] will be plundered;(AH)
all who plunder her will have their fill,”
declares the Lord.
11 “Because you rejoice and are glad,
you who pillage my inheritance,(AI)
because you frolic like a heifer(AJ) threshing grain
and neigh like stallions,
12 your mother will be greatly ashamed;
she who gave you birth will be disgraced.(AK)
She will be the least of the nations—
a wilderness, a dry land, a desert.(AL)
13 Because of the Lord’s anger she will not be inhabited
but will be completely desolate.(AM)
All who pass Babylon will be appalled;(AN)
they will scoff(AO) because of all her wounds.(AP)
14 “Take up your positions around Babylon,
all you who draw the bow.(AQ)
Shoot at her! Spare no arrows,(AR)
for she has sinned against the Lord.
15 Shout(AS) against her on every side!
She surrenders, her towers fall,
her walls(AT) are torn down.
Since this is the vengeance(AU) of the Lord,
take vengeance on her;
do to her(AV) as she has done to others.(AW)
16 Cut off from Babylon the sower,
and the reaper with his sickle at harvest.
Because of the sword(AX) of the oppressor
let everyone return to their own people,(AY)
let everyone flee to their own land.(AZ)
17 “Israel is a scattered flock(BA)
that lions(BB) have chased away.
The first to devour(BC) them
was the king(BD) of Assyria;
the last to crush their bones(BE)
was Nebuchadnezzar(BF) king(BG) of Babylon.”
18 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
“I will punish the king of Babylon and his land
as I punished the king(BH) of Assyria.(BI)
19 But I will bring(BJ) Israel back to their own pasture,
and they will graze on Carmel and Bashan;
their appetite will be satisfied(BK)
on the hills(BL) of Ephraim and Gilead.(BM)
20 In those days, at that time,”
declares the Lord,
“search will be made for Israel’s guilt,
but there will be none,(BN)
and for the sins(BO) of Judah,
but none will be found,
for I will forgive(BP) the remnant(BQ) I spare.
21 “Attack the land of Merathaim
and those who live in Pekod.(BR)
Pursue, kill and completely destroy[c] them,”
declares the Lord.
“Do everything I have commanded you.
22 The noise(BS) of battle is in the land,
the noise of great destruction!
23 How broken and shattered
is the hammer(BT) of the whole earth!(BU)
How desolate(BV) is Babylon
among the nations!
24 I set a trap(BW) for you, Babylon,
and you were caught before you knew it;
you were found and captured(BX)
because you opposed(BY) the Lord.
25 The Lord has opened his arsenal
and brought out the weapons(BZ) of his wrath,
for the Sovereign Lord Almighty has work to do
in the land of the Babylonians.(CA)
26 Come against her from afar.(CB)
Break open her granaries;
pile her up like heaps of grain.(CC)
Completely destroy(CD) her
and leave her no remnant.
27 Kill all her young bulls;(CE)
let them go down to the slaughter!(CF)
Woe to them! For their day(CG) has come,
the time(CH) for them to be punished.
28 Listen to the fugitives(CI) and refugees from Babylon
declaring in Zion(CJ)
how the Lord our God has taken vengeance,(CK)
vengeance for his temple.(CL)
29 “Summon archers against Babylon,
all those who draw the bow.(CM)
Encamp all around her;
let no one escape.(CN)
Repay(CO) her for her deeds;(CP)
do to her as she has done.
For she has defied(CQ) the Lord,
the Holy One(CR) of Israel.
30 Therefore, her young men(CS) will fall in the streets;
all her soldiers will be silenced in that day,”
declares the Lord.
31 “See, I am against(CT) you, you arrogant one,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
“for your day(CU) has come,
the time for you to be punished.
32 The arrogant(CV) one will stumble and fall(CW)
and no one will help her up;(CX)
I will kindle a fire(CY) in her towns
that will consume all who are around her.”
33 This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“The people of Israel are oppressed,(CZ)
and the people of Judah as well.
All their captors hold them fast,
refusing to let them go.(DA)
34 Yet their Redeemer(DB) is strong;
the Lord Almighty(DC) is his name.
He will vigorously defend their cause(DD)
so that he may bring rest(DE) to their land,
but unrest to those who live in Babylon.
35 “A sword(DF) against the Babylonians!”(DG)
declares the Lord—
“against those who live in Babylon
and against her officials and wise(DH) men!
36 A sword against her false prophets!
They will become fools.
A sword against her warriors!(DI)
They will be filled with terror.(DJ)
37 A sword against her horses and chariots(DK)
and all the foreigners in her ranks!
They will become weaklings.(DL)
A sword against her treasures!(DM)
They will be plundered.
38 A drought on[d] her waters!(DN)
They will dry(DO) up.
For it is a land of idols,(DP)
idols that will go mad with terror.
39 “So desert creatures(DQ) and hyenas will live there,
and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
or lived in from generation to generation.(DR)
40 As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah(DS)
along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
no people will dwell in it.(DT)
41 “Look! An army is coming from the north;(DU)
a great nation and many kings
are being stirred(DV) up from the ends of the earth.(DW)
42 They are armed with bows(DX) and spears;
they are cruel(DY) and without mercy.(DZ)
They sound like the roaring sea(EA)
as they ride on their horses;
they come like men in battle formation
to attack you, Daughter Babylon.(EB)
43 The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,
and his hands hang limp.(EC)
Anguish has gripped him,
pain like that of a woman in labor.(ED)
44 Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets(EE)
to a rich pastureland,
I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant.
Who is the chosen(EF) one I will appoint for this?
Who is like me and who can challenge me?(EG)
And what shepherd can stand against me?”
45 Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Babylon,
what he has purposed(EH) against the land of the Babylonians:(EI)
The young of the flock will be dragged away;
their pasture will be appalled at their fate.
46 At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble;(EJ)
its cry(EK) will resound among the nations.

51 神はこう言います。
「わたしは、カルデヤ人の住むバビロンを
隅々まで滅ぼす者たちを、勇気づける。
2 ふるい分ける者たちが来て、
バビロンをふるいにかけ、風を起こして吹き飛ばす。
彼らは、災いの日に四方八方から来て、攻め立てる。
3 敵の矢はバビロンの射手を倒し、勇士のよろいを貫く。
生き延びる者は一人もいない。
若者も老人もみな、いのちを落とす。
4 カルデヤ人の地に倒れ、
めった切りにされて路上で息絶える。
5 わたしは、イスラエルとユダを見捨てたわけではなく、
依然として彼らの神である。
だがカルデヤ人の地は、
イスラエルのきよい神に対する罪で満ちている。」
6 バビロンから逃げ出し、自分のいのちを救いなさい。
罠にかかってはいけません。
そのまま残ったら、神がバビロンのすべての罪に
報復する時、巻き添えを食います。
7 バビロンは、主の御手にある金の杯のようでした。
すべての国々はこれから飲んで、酔いつぶれました。
8 ところが今度は、突然、そのバビロンが倒れたのです。
この国のために泣きなさい。薬を与えなさい。
もしかしたら、元どおりになるかもしれません。
9 できることなら助けたいのです。
しかし今となっては、どんな手を打っても救えません。
この国を見捨てて、故国へ帰りなさい。
主がこの国に天罰を下したからです。
10 主は私たちの顔を立ててくださいました。
さあ、エルサレムで、
神のなさったすべてのことを言い広めましょう。
11 矢じりを研ぎ、盾を高く掲げなさい。
主はメディヤ人の王たちを勇気づけて
バビロンに乗り込ませ、
これを滅ぼすことに決めたからです。
これが、神の民を虐待し、
神殿を汚した者たちへの報復です。
12 バビロンよ、守備を固め、城壁に見張りを大ぜい立て、
伏兵を隠しておきなさい。
神は宣言したことをみな実行するからです。
13 商業の中心地である繁栄した港よ。
いのちの糸が切られる最期の時がきました。
14 天の軍勢の主はご自分の名にかけて、こう誓いました。
おまえの町々は、無数のばったが群がる畑のように、
敵兵であふれ返る。
彼らは、天にも届けとばかり、勝ちどきを上げる。
15 神は力と知恵をもって地をお造りになりました。
すぐれた知性をもって天を張り広げました。
16 神が口を開くと大空に雷がとどろき渡ります。
神は大地から水蒸気を上らせ、ご自分の倉から、
雨と風を伴ういなずまを取り出します。
17 神に比べたら、人間は愚かな獣で、
一かけらの知恵もありません。
金細工人は偶像を作るたびに、
ますます良心が鈍くなります。
偶像には、いのちのしるしである息がないのに、
それを作るたびに神ができたと言って、
うそをつくからです。
18 偶像は、むなしいものです。
神が来てそれをみな滅ぼす時が近づいています。
19 イスラエルの神は偶像ではありません。
この神があらゆるものを造り、
イスラエルをご自分の民としました。
その名は天の軍勢の主です。
20 バビロンは神のための戦いの斧であり、また剣です。
主は言います。
「わたしは国々を木端微塵に砕き、
多くの王国を滅ぼすためにおまえを用いる。
21 おまえを使って軍勢を蹴散らし、馬と乗り手を倒し、
戦車とそれに乗っている者を打ち砕く。
22 おまえを使って、年老いた者も若者も、
若い男も若い女も、
23 羊飼いも羊の群れも、農夫も牛も、
指揮官も総督も倒す。
24 わたしはイスラエルの目の前で、
バビロンとカルデヤ人に報いる。
彼らがわたしの民に加えたすべての悪に
仕返しするのだ。
25 全世界を破壊する大きな山、バビロンよ。
わたしはおまえを攻める。
おまえにこぶしを振り上げ、高い所から突き落とし、
おまえを焼けただれた山にする。
26 おまえは永久に荒れ地となり、
おまえの石さえも、建築用として再生されることはない。
おまえは地上から完全に一掃されるのだ。」
27 多くの国々に合図して、
バビロンを攻める兵士を集めなさい。
雄たけびをあたりに響かせなさい。
アララテ、ミニ、アシュケナズの軍隊を呼びなさい。
指揮官を決め、長蛇の列をなして馬を進めなさい。
28 バビロンめざして、メディヤ人の王たちと将軍たち、
その支配下の国々の軍隊を攻め上らせなさい。
29 バビロンは震え、苦痛で身もだえします。
主がこの国について計画したことはみな、
少しも変更されないからです。
バビロンは、だれも住まない荒れ地となります。
30 大勇士でも、戦う気力を失い、
仮小屋に引きこもります。
力が尽きて、女のようになるのです。
侵略者たちは家々を焼き、町の門を壊しました。
31 伝令が四方八方から王のもとへ駆けつけ、
何もかも失われたと報告します。
32 退路はすべて断たれ、とりでは焼き払われ、
兵士たちは大混乱に陥っています。
33 イスラエルの神である天の軍勢の主が、
こう言ったからです。
「バビロンは打ち場に積まれた麦のようだ。
もうすぐ、からざおで打たれる。」
34-35 バビロンのユダヤ人たちは訴えます。
「バビロンのネブカデネザル王は、私たちを食い物にし、
踏みつけ、骨なしにしました。
怪物のように私たちをのみ込み、
私たちの財宝で腹を満たし、
私たちをイスラエルから追放しました。
バビロンに、このすべての悪事の報いを刈り取らせ、
その手で流した私たちの血を完全に償わせてください。」
36 それに対して、主はこうお答えになります。
「わたしはおまえたちを弁護する者となり、
おまえたちのために報復する。
バビロンの川を干上がらせ、水の補給を断つ。
37 こうしてバビロンは、石くれの山となり、
山犬が住みつき、だれもいない見るも恐ろしい地となる。
38 バビロニヤ人は宴会を開いて、
ライオンのようにほえる。
39 彼らがありったけのぶどう酒を飲んで
気持ちが大きくなっている時、
わたしは彼らのために別の宴会を設け、
彼らが意識を失って倒れ、
永遠の眠りにつくまで飲ませる。
40 彼らを子羊のように、また雄羊や雄やぎのように、
ほふり場に引いて行く。
41 全世界の人のあこがれの的だった、
あの偉大なバビロンは、なぜ倒れたのか。
世界は、バビロンが倒れるのを見て、目を疑う。
42 海がせり上がってバビロンを包むと、
それは波に覆われた。
43 町々は廃墟となった。
バビロンは、誰ひとり住まず、旅人さえ寄りつかない、
乾ききった荒れ地となる。
44 わたしはバビロンの神であるベルを罰し、
その口から、彼がのみ込んだ物を取り出す。
諸国の民は二度と彼を拝まない。
バビロンの城壁は倒れてしまった。
45 わたしの民よ、バビロンを脱出し、
わたしの激しい怒りから自分を救いなさい。
46 外国の軍隊が近づいて来るといううわさを聞いても、うろたえてはならない。うわさは、いつになっても絶えないものだ。だが、この国に内戦が起こり、各州の総督が互いに戦う時がくる。 47 わたしがこの大都市とこの国のすべての偶像を罰する時が、きっとくる。そうなれば、町中に死人が転がるようになる。 48 バビロンを攻める強力な軍勢が北から来るので、天も地も喜ぶ。」そう主は言います。 49 かつてイスラエルの民を殺したように、今度はバビロンが殺される番です。 50 剣から逃れた者は、立ち止まって、あたりの様子を見ていてはいけません。力の限り逃げなさい。主を思い出して、はるかかなたのエルサレムへ帰って行きなさい。 51 「バビロンから来た外国人たちの手で神殿が汚されたので、私たちはとても恥ずかしい思いをしました。」
52 「そのとおりだ」と、主は言います。しかし、バビロンの偶像が壊される時が近づいています。国中に、傷ついた人のうめき声が聞こえます。 53 「たとえ、バビロンが天のように高くなり、その力が信じられないほど増し加わったとしても、必ず死ぬ」と、主は言います。 54 カルデヤ人の支配する地、バビロンに上がる大きな破壊の叫びを聞きなさい。 55 主はバビロンの息の根を止めます。その大きな声も、やがては大波にのまれて消えます。 56 すべてのものを破壊する軍勢が攻めて来て、勇士たちを滅ぼします。武器という武器はどれも、まるで役に立ちません。神がバビロンに与えるものは、当然の刑罰だけです。 57 「わたしは、この国の重立った者、知恵のある者、支配者、指揮官、それに勇士たちを酔いつぶす。彼らは深い眠りに落ち、二度と目を覚まさない。」こう天の軍勢の主である王が言います。
58 バビロンの厚い城壁はくずれて平らになり、
高い城門も無残に焼け落ちます。
多くの国から呼び集められた建築士は、
造った物が火で焼かれるため、
むだ骨を折ったことに気づきます。

51 This is what the Lord says:
“See, I will stir(A) up the spirit of a destroyer
against Babylon(B) and the people of Leb Kamai.[a]
2 I will send foreigners(C) to Babylon
to winnow(D) her and to devastate her land;
they will oppose her on every side
in the day(E) of her disaster.
3 Let not the archer string his bow,(F)
nor let him put on his armor.(G)
Do not spare her young men;
completely destroy[b] her army.
4 They will fall(H) down slain in Babylon,[c]
fatally wounded in her streets.(I)
5 For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken(J)
by their God, the Lord Almighty,
though their land[d] is full of guilt(K)
before the Holy One of Israel.
6 “Flee(L) from Babylon!
Run for your lives!
Do not be destroyed because of her sins.(M)
It is time(N) for the Lord’s vengeance;(O)
he will repay(P) her what she deserves.
7 Babylon was a gold cup(Q) in the Lord’s hand;
she made the whole earth drunk.
The nations drank her wine;
therefore they have now gone mad.
8 Babylon will suddenly fall(R) and be broken.
Wail over her!
Get balm(S) for her pain;
perhaps she can be healed.
9 “‘We would have healed Babylon,
but she cannot be healed;
let us leave(T) her and each go to our own land,
for her judgment(U) reaches to the skies,
it rises as high as the heavens.’
11 “Sharpen the arrows,(X)
take up the shields!(Y)
The Lord has stirred up the kings(Z) of the Medes,(AA)
because his purpose(AB) is to destroy Babylon.
The Lord will take vengeance,(AC)
vengeance for his temple.(AD)
12 Lift up a banner(AE) against the walls of Babylon!
Reinforce the guard,
station the watchmen,(AF)
prepare an ambush!(AG)
The Lord will carry out his purpose,(AH)
his decree against the people of Babylon.
13 You who live by many waters(AI)
and are rich in treasures,(AJ)
your end has come,
the time for you to be destroyed.(AK)
14 The Lord Almighty has sworn by himself:(AL)
I will surely fill you with troops, as with a swarm of locusts,(AM)
and they will shout(AN) in triumph over you.
15 “He made the earth by his power;
he founded the world by his wisdom(AO)
and stretched(AP) out the heavens by his understanding.(AQ)
16 When he thunders,(AR) the waters in the heavens roar;
he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning with the rain(AS)
and brings out the wind from his storehouses.(AT)
17 “Everyone is senseless and without knowledge;
every goldsmith is shamed by his idols.
The images he makes are a fraud;(AU)
they have no breath in them.
18 They are worthless,(AV) the objects of mockery;
when their judgment comes, they will perish.
19 He who is the Portion(AW) of Jacob is not like these,
for he is the Maker of all things,
including the people of his inheritance(AX)—
the Lord Almighty is his name.
20 “You are my war club,(AY)
my weapon for battle—
with you I shatter(AZ) nations,(BA)
with you I destroy kingdoms,
21 with you I shatter horse and rider,(BB)
with you I shatter chariot(BC) and driver,
22 with you I shatter man and woman,
with you I shatter old man and youth,
with you I shatter young man and young woman,(BD)
23 with you I shatter shepherd and flock,
with you I shatter farmer and oxen,
with you I shatter governors and officials.(BE)
24 “Before your eyes I will repay(BF) Babylon(BG) and all who live in Babylonia[e] for all the wrong they have done in Zion,” declares the Lord.
25 “I am against(BH) you, you destroying mountain,
you who destroy the whole earth,”(BI)
declares the Lord.
“I will stretch out my hand(BJ) against you,
roll you off the cliffs,
and make you a burned-out mountain.(BK)
26 No rock will be taken from you for a cornerstone,
nor any stone for a foundation,
for you will be desolate(BL) forever,”
declares the Lord.
27 “Lift up a banner(BM) in the land!
Blow the trumpet among the nations!
Prepare the nations for battle against her;
summon against her these kingdoms:(BN)
Ararat,(BO) Minni and Ashkenaz.(BP)
Appoint a commander against her;
send up horses like a swarm of locusts.(BQ)
28 Prepare the nations for battle against her—
the kings of the Medes,(BR)
their governors and all their officials,
and all the countries they rule.(BS)
29 The land trembles(BT) and writhes,
for the Lord’s purposes(BU) against Babylon stand—
to lay waste(BV) the land of Babylon
so that no one will live there.(BW)
30 Babylon’s warriors(BX) have stopped fighting;
they remain in their strongholds.
Their strength is exhausted;
they have become weaklings.(BY)
Her dwellings are set on fire;(BZ)
the bars(CA) of her gates are broken.
31 One courier(CB) follows another
and messenger follows messenger
to announce to the king of Babylon
that his entire city is captured,(CC)
32 the river crossings seized,
the marshes set on fire,(CD)
and the soldiers terrified.(CE)”
33 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
“Daughter Babylon(CF) is like a threshing floor(CG)
at the time it is trampled;
the time to harvest(CH) her will soon come.(CI)”
34 “Nebuchadnezzar(CJ) king of Babylon has devoured(CK) us,(CL)
he has thrown us into confusion,
he has made us an empty jar.
Like a serpent he has swallowed us
and filled his stomach with our delicacies,
and then has spewed(CM) us out.
35 May the violence(CN) done to our flesh[f] be on Babylon,”
say the inhabitants of Zion.
“May our blood be on those who live in Babylonia,”
says Jerusalem.(CO)
36 Therefore this is what the Lord says:
“See, I will defend your cause(CP)
and avenge(CQ) you;
I will dry up(CR) her sea
and make her springs dry.
37 Babylon will be a heap of ruins,
a haunt(CS) of jackals,
an object of horror and scorn,(CT)
a place where no one lives.(CU)
38 Her people all roar like young lions,(CV)
they growl like lion cubs.
39 But while they are aroused,
I will set out a feast for them
and make them drunk,(CW)
so that they shout with laughter—
then sleep forever(CX) and not awake,”
declares the Lord.(CY)
40 “I will bring them down
like lambs to the slaughter,
like rams and goats.(CZ)
41 “How Sheshak[g](DA) will be captured,(DB)
the boast of the whole earth seized!
How desolate(DC) Babylon will be
among the nations!
42 The sea will rise over Babylon;
its roaring waves(DD) will cover her.
43 Her towns will be desolate,
a dry and desert(DE) land,
a land where no one lives,
through which no one travels.(DF)
44 I will punish Bel(DG) in Babylon
and make him spew out(DH) what he has swallowed.
The nations will no longer stream to him.
And the wall(DI) of Babylon will fall.
45 “Come out(DJ) of her, my people!
Run(DK) for your lives!
Run from the fierce anger(DL) of the Lord.
46 Do not lose heart(DM) or be afraid(DN)
when rumors(DO) are heard in the land;
one rumor comes this year, another the next,
rumors of violence in the land
and of ruler against ruler.
47 For the time will surely come
when I will punish the idols(DP) of Babylon;
her whole land will be disgraced(DQ)
and her slain will all lie fallen within her.(DR)
48 Then heaven and earth and all that is in them
will shout(DS) for joy over Babylon,
for out of the north(DT)
destroyers(DU) will attack her,”
declares the Lord.
49 “Babylon must fall because of Israel’s slain,
just as the slain in all the earth
have fallen because of Babylon.(DV)
50 You who have escaped the sword,
leave(DW) and do not linger!
Remember(DX) the Lord in a distant land,(DY)
and call to mind Jerusalem.”
51 “We are disgraced,(DZ)
for we have been insulted
and shame covers our faces,
because foreigners have entered
the holy places of the Lord’s house.”(EA)
52 “But days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will punish her idols,(EB)
and throughout her land
the wounded will groan.(EC)
53 Even if Babylon ascends to the heavens(ED)
and fortifies her lofty stronghold,
I will send destroyers(EE) against her,”
declares the Lord.
54 “The sound of a cry(EF) comes from Babylon,
the sound of great destruction(EG)
from the land of the Babylonians.[h]
55 The Lord will destroy Babylon;
he will silence(EH) her noisy din.
Waves(EI) of enemies will rage like great waters;
the roar of their voices will resound.
56 A destroyer(EJ) will come against Babylon;
her warriors will be captured,
and their bows will be broken.(EK)
For the Lord is a God of retribution;
he will repay(EL) in full.
57 I will make her officials(EM) and wise(EN) men drunk,(EO)
her governors, officers and warriors as well;
they will sleep(EP) forever and not awake,”
declares the King,(EQ) whose name is the Lord Almighty.
58 This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“Babylon’s thick wall(ER) will be leveled
and her high gates(ES) set on fire;
the peoples(ET) exhaust(EU) themselves for nothing,
the nations’ labor is only fuel for the flames.”(EV)
59 This is the message Jeremiah the prophet gave to the staff officer Seraiah son of Neriah,(EW) the son of Mahseiah, when he went to Babylon with Zedekiah(EX) king of Judah in the fourth(EY) year of his reign. 60 Jeremiah had written on a scroll(EZ) about all the disasters that would come upon Babylon—all that had been recorded concerning Babylon. 61 He said to Seraiah, “When you get to Babylon, see that you read all these words aloud. 62 Then say, ‘Lord, you have said you will destroy this place, so that neither people nor animals will live in it; it will be desolate(FA) forever.’ 63 When you finish reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the Euphrates.(FB) 64 Then say, ‘So will Babylon sink to rise no more(FC) because of the disaster I will bring on her. And her people(FD) will fall.’”(FE)

3 旅行の途中でこちらに寄った人たちが、あなたの良い消息を聞かせてくれたので、とても喜んでいます。彼らは、あなたがいつもきよく、真理に歩んでいると報告してくれました。 4 私の子どもたちのことで、こんな知らせを聞くことほど、大きな喜びはありません。
良い行いをしなさい

2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. 3 It gave me great joy when some believers(B) came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.(C) 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children(D) are walking in the truth.(E)
5 Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters,[a](F) even though they are strangers to you.(G) 6 They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way(H) in a manner that honors(I) God. 7 It was for the sake of the Name(J) that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.(K) 8 We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.
9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us. 10 So when I come,(L) I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers.(M) He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.(N)
11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.(O) Anyone who does what is good is from God.(P) Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.(Q) 12 Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone(R)—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.(S)
13 I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.(T)
