The New Covenant

31 (A)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make (B)a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when (C)I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, (D)though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 (E)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: (F)I will put my law within them, and I will write it (G)on their hearts. (H)And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ (I)for they shall all know me, (J)from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For (K)I will forgive their iniquity, and (L)I will remember their sin no more.”

Beth

How can (A)a young man keep his way pure?
    By guarding it according to your word.
10 (B)With my whole heart I seek you;
    let me not (C)wander from your commandments!
11 I have (D)stored up your word in my heart,
    that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord;
    (E)teach me your statutes!
13 With my lips I (F)declare
    all the rules[a] of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I (G)delight
    as much as in all (H)riches.
15 I will (I)meditate on your precepts
    and fix my eyes on your (J)ways.
16 I will (K)delight in your statutes;
    I will not forget your word.

  1. Psalm 119:13 Or all the just decrees

For every high priest chosen from among men (A)is appointed to act on behalf of men (B)in relation to God, (C)to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. (D)He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself (E)is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins (F)just as he does for those of the people. And (G)no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, (H)just as Aaron was.

So also Christ (I)did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,

(J)“You are my Son,
    today I have begotten you”;

as he says also in another place,

(K)“You are a priest forever,
    after the order of Melchizedek.”

In the days of his flesh, (L)Jesus[a] offered up prayers and supplications, (M)with loud cries and tears, to him (N)who was able to save him from death, and (O)he was heard because of his reverence. Although (P)he was a son, (Q)he learned obedience through what he suffered. And (R)being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest (S)after the order of Melchizedek.

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

32 (A)And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and (B)Jesus was walking ahead of them. And (C)they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, (D)we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will (E)condemn him to death and (F)deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will (G)mock him and (H)spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And (I)after three days he will rise.”

The Request of James and John

35 (J)And James and John, (K)the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us (L)whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, (M)“What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us (N)to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, (O)in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, (P)“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (Q)to drink the cup that I drink, or (R)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, (S)“The cup that I drink (T)you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, (U)you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, (V)but it is for those for whom it has been (W)prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 (X)And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles (Y)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But (Z)it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[a] 44 and whoever would be first among you must be (AA)slave[b] of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but (AB)to serve, and (AC)to give his life as a ransom for (AD)many.”
