Jeremiah 8:4-12

Sin and Treachery

⁴“You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord:
^(A)When men fall, do they not rise again?
    If one turns away, does he not return?
⁵Why then has this people ^(B)turned away
    in perpetual ^(C)backsliding?
^(D)They hold fast to deceit;
    they refuse to return.
⁶^(E)I have paid attention and listened,
    but they have not spoken rightly;
no man relents of his evil,
    saying, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone turns to his own course,
    ^(F)like a horse plunging headlong into battle.
⁷Even the stork in the heavens
    knows her times,
and ^(G)the turtledove, ^(H)swallow, and crane^[a]
    keep the time of their coming,
^(I)but my people know not
    the rules^[b] of the Lord.

⁸^(J)“How can you say, ‘We are wise,
    and the law of the Lord is with us’?
But behold, the lying pen of the scribes
    has made it into a lie.
⁹^(K)The wise men shall be put to shame;
    they shall be dismayed ^(L)and taken;
behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord,
    so what wisdom is in them?
¹⁰^(M)Therefore I will give their wives to others
    and their fields to conquerors,
because from the least to the greatest
    everyone ^(N)is greedy for unjust gain;
from prophet to priest,
    everyone deals falsely.
¹¹They have healed ^(O)the wound of my people lightly,
    saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
    when there is no peace.
¹²Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
    No, ^(P)they were not at all ashamed;
    they did not know how to blush.
^(Q)Therefore they shall fall among the fallen;
    when I punish them, they shall be overthrown,
says the Lord.

Spiritual Gifts

12 Now ^(A)concerning^[a] spiritual gifts,^[b] brothers,^[c] I do not want you to be uninformed. ²You know that ^(B)when you were pagans ^(C)you were led astray to ^(D)mute idols, however you were led. ³Therefore I want you to understand that ^(E)no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is ^(F)accursed!” and ^(G)no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

⁴Now ^(H)there are varieties of gifts, but ^(I)the same Spirit; ⁵and ^(J)there are varieties of service, but ^(K)the same Lord; ⁶and there are varieties of activities, but it is ^(L)the same God who empowers them all in everyone. ⁷^(M)To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. ⁸For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of ^(N)wisdom, and to another the utterance of ^(O)knowledge according to the same Spirit, ⁹to another ^(P)faith by the same Spirit, to another ^(Q)gifts of healing by the one Spirit, ¹⁰to another ^(R)the working of miracles, to another ^(S)prophecy, to another ^(T)the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another ^(U)various kinds of tongues, to another ^(V)the interpretation of tongues. ¹¹All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, ^(W)who apportions to each one individually ^(X)as he wills.

Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem

⁴¹^(A)And when he drew near and saw the city, ^(B)he wept over it, ⁴²saying, ^(C)“Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now ^(D)they are hidden from your eyes. ⁴³For ^(E)the days will come upon you, when your enemies ^(F)will set up a barricade around you and ^(G)surround you and hem you in on every side ⁴⁴^(H)and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And ^(I)they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know ^(J)the time of your ^(K)visitation.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

⁴⁵^(L)And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, ⁴⁶saying to them, “It is written, ^(M)‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but ^(N)you have made it a den of robbers.”

⁴⁷^(O)And he was teaching daily in the temple. ^(P)The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, ⁴⁸but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.
