² And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, ^(A)according to all that Jehoiakim had done.

^22 (A)And Judah did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and they ^(B)provoked him to jealousy with their sins that they committed, more than all that their fathers had done.

²⁵ And you, O profane^{[a] (A)}wicked one, prince of Israel, ^(B)whose day has come, ^(C)the time of your final punishment,

^16 (A)“As I live, declares the Lord God, surely ^(B)in the place where the king dwells ^(C)who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant with him he broke, in Babylon he shall die. ^17 (D)Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company will not help him in war, ^(E)when mounds are cast up and siege walls built to cut off many lives. ¹⁸ He despised the oath in breaking the covenant, and behold, he gave his hand and did all these things; he shall not escape. ¹⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord God: As I live, surely it is my oath that he despised, and my covenant that he broke. I will return it upon his head. ^20 (F)I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon ^(G)and enter into judgment with him there ^(H)for the treachery he has committed against me.

²⁹ And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, ^(A)“Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?” ³⁰ Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: ^(B)He shall have none ^(C)to sit on the throne of David, ^(D)and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night. ^31 (E)And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’”

²¹ Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king. ²² It was ^(A)the ninth month, and the king was sitting in ^(B)the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. ²³ As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot.

²¹ And when ^(A)King Jehoiakim, with all his warriors and all the officials, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death. But when Uriah heard of it, he was afraid and fled and escaped to Egypt. ²² Then ^(B)King Jehoiakim sent to Egypt certain men, ^(C)Elnathan the son of ^(D)Achbor and others with him, ²³ and they took Uriah from Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiakim, ^(E)who struck him down with the sword and dumped his dead body into the burial place of the common people.

¹⁹ And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, ^(A)according to all that Jehoiakim had done. ²⁰ For because of the anger of the Lord it came to the point in Jerusalem and Judah that he cast them out from his presence.

^(B)And Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

¹² He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God. He did not humble himself before ^(A)Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke from the mouth of the Lord. ^13 (B)He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God. ^(C)He stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the Lord, the God of Israel.
