20 Disaster follows disaster;^(G)
    the whole land lies in ruins.^(H)
In an instant my tents^(I) are destroyed,
    my shelter in a moment.

    and hear the sound of the trumpet?^(K)

    the sound of great destruction^(B)
    from the land of the Babylonians.^[a]
55 The Lord will destroy Babylon;
    he will silence^(C) her noisy din.
Waves^(D) of enemies will rage like great waters;
    the roar of their voices will resound.
⁵⁶ A destroyer^(E) will come against Babylon;
    her warriors will be captured,
    and their bows will be broken.^(F)
For the Lord is a God of retribution;
    he will repay^(G) in full.

² A dire^(A) vision has been shown to me:
    The traitor betrays,^(B) the looter takes loot.
Elam,^(C) attack! Media,^(D) lay siege!
    I will bring to an end all the groaning she caused.

³ At this my body is racked with pain,^(E)
    pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor;^(F)
I am staggered by what I hear,
    I am bewildered^(G) by what I see.
⁴ My heart^(H) falters,
    fear makes me tremble;^(I)
the twilight I longed for
    has become a horror^(J) to me.
