A Message to Baruch

45 When Baruch^(A) son of Neriah^(B) wrote on a scroll^(C) the words Jeremiah the prophet dictated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim^(D) son of Josiah king of Judah, Jeremiah said this to Baruch:

Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll

36 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim^(A) son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord:

⁴ So Jeremiah called Baruch^(A) son of Neriah,^(B) and while Jeremiah dictated^(C) all the words the Lord had spoken to him, Baruch wrote them on the scroll.^(D)

¹² and I gave this deed to Baruch^(A) son of Neriah,^(B) the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

³² So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated,^(A) Baruch wrote^(B) on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned^(C) in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.

¹⁶ “After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch^(A) son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord:

Seventy Years of Captivity

25 The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim^(A) son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar^(B) king of Babylon.

³ But Baruch^(A) son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Babylonians,^[a] so they may kill us or carry us into exile to Babylon.”^(B)

⁴ So Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers and all the people^(C) disobeyed the Lord’s command^(D) to stay in the land of Judah.^{(E) 5} Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers led away all the remnant of Judah who had come back to live in the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been scattered.^{(F) 6} They also led away all those whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan—the men, the women,^(G) the children and the king’s daughters. And they took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch^(H) son of Neriah along with them.

²⁶ Instead, the king commanded Jerahmeel, a son of the king, Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest^(A) Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the Lord had hidden^(B) them.
