25 So in the ninth(A) year of Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army. He encamped outside the city and built siege works(C) all around it. The city was kept under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.

By the ninth day of the fourth[a] month the famine(D) in the city had become so severe that there was no food for the people to eat. Then the city wall was broken through,(E) and the whole army fled at night through the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden, though the Babylonians[b] were surrounding(F) the city. 20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies,(A) you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.(B) 22 For this is the time of punishment(C) in fulfillment(D) of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled(E) on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

“Lord, you are righteous,(A) but this day we are covered with shame(B)—the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered(C) us because of our unfaithfulness(D) to you.(E) We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you.(F) The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving,(G) even though we have rebelled against him;(H) 10 we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.(I) 11 All Israel has transgressed(J) your law(K) and turned away, refusing to obey you.

“Therefore the curses(L) and sworn judgments(M) written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned(N) against you. 12 You have fulfilled(O) the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster.(P) Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like(Q) what has been done to Jerusalem.(R) 13 Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord(S) our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth.(T) 14 The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster(U) on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does;(V) yet we have not obeyed him.(W)

15 “Now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand(X) and who made for yourself a name(Y) that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong. 16 Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts,(Z) turn away(AA) your anger and your wrath(AB) from Jerusalem,(AC) your city, your holy hill.(AD) Our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn(AE) to all those around us.

17 “Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, Lord, look with favor(AF) on your desolate sanctuary. 18 Give ear,(AG) our God, and hear;(AH) open your eyes and see(AI) the desolation of the city that bears your Name.(AJ) We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.(AK) 19 Lord, listen! Lord, forgive!(AL) Lord, hear and act! For your sake,(AM) my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”
