¹³ and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.^(A)

²¹ King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread^(A) in the city was gone.^(B) So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.^(C)

³⁰ For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him.

¹⁶ When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.^(A)

³⁵ he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers^(A) get here.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard^(B) in Herod’s palace.

²³ He ordered the centurion to keep Paul under guard^(A) but to give him some freedom^(B) and permit his friends to take care of his needs.^(C)

²⁴ Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus.^{(D) 25} As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control^(E) and the judgment^(F) to come, Felix was afraid^(G) and said, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.” ²⁶ At the same time he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him.

¹⁴ sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard.^(A) They turned him over to Gedaliah^(B) son of Ahikam,^(C) the son of Shaphan,^(D) to take him back to his home. So he remained among his own people.^(E)

¹⁵ While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him: ¹⁶ “Go and tell Ebed-Melek^(F) the Cushite, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words^(G) against this city—words concerning disaster,^(H) not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes. ¹⁷ But I will rescue^(I) you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear. ¹⁸ I will save^(J) you; you will not fall by the sword^(K) but will escape with your life,^(L) because you trust^(M) in me, declares the Lord.’”

²⁸ And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard^(A) until the day Jerusalem was captured.

The Fall of Jerusalem^(B)

This is how Jerusalem^(C) was taken:

⁶ So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard.^(A) They lowered Jeremiah by ropes^(B) into the cistern; it had no water in it,^(C) only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.^(D)
