⁷ You shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a vineyard, nor have any of these; but all your days you shall dwell in tents, ^(A)that you may live many days in the land where you are sojourners.’

¹⁰ But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

^2 (A)“Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: ³ “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”

¹⁴ And they found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in ^(A)booths^[a] during the feast of the seventh month, ¹⁵ and ^(B)that they should announce and proclaim in all their cities and ^(C)in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and ^(D)bring olive branches, branches of oil trees, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written.”

¹⁶ Then the people went out and brought them and made themselves booths, each one on the ^(E)roof of his house, or in their courtyards or the courts of the house of God, and in the open square of the ^(F)Water Gate ^(G)and in the open square of the Gate of Ephraim.

^42 (A)You shall dwell in ^[a]booths for seven days. ^(B)All who are native Israelites shall dwell in booths, ^43 (C)that your generations may ^(D)know that I made the children of Israel dwell in booths when ^(E)I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.’ ”

²⁷ So the boys grew. And Esau was ^(A)a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was ^(B)a ^[a]mild man, ^(C)dwelling in tents.

Living Before the World

¹¹ Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts ^(A)which war against the soul,

⁹ By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, ^(A)dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, ^(B)the heirs with him of the same promise; ¹⁰ for he waited for ^(C)the city which has foundations, ^(D)whose builder and maker is God.

¹¹ By faith ^(E)Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and ^(F)she^[a] bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him ^(G)faithful who had promised. ¹² Therefore from one man, and him as good as ^(H)dead, were born as many as the ^(I)stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

The Heavenly Hope

¹³ These all died in faith, ^(J)not having received the ^(K)promises, but ^(L)having seen them afar off ^[b]were assured of them, embraced them and ^(M)confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
