⁷ You shall not build a house; you shall not sow seed; you shall not plant or have a vineyard; but you shall live in tents all your days, ^(A)that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.’

¹⁰ but we have lived in tents and have obeyed and done all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

^2 (A)“Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), ³ “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

¹⁴ And they found it written in the Law that the Lord had commanded by Moses ^(A)that the people of Israel should dwell in booths^[a] during the feast of the seventh month, ¹⁵ and that they should proclaim it and ^(B)publish it in all their towns and ^(C)in Jerusalem, “Go out to the hills and bring ^(D)branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.” ¹⁶ So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each ^(E)on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at ^(F)the Water Gate and in the square at ^(G)the Gate of Ephraim.

^42 (A)You shall dwell in booths for seven days. All native Israelites shall dwell in booths, ⁴³ that ^(B)your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.”

^12 (A)“Honor your father and your mother, ^(B)that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

²⁷ When the boys grew up, Esau was ^(A)a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, ^(B)dwelling in tents.

¹¹ Beloved, I urge you ^(A)as sojourners and exiles ^(B)to abstain from the passions of the flesh, ^(C)which wage war against your soul.

⁹ By faith he went to live in ^(A)the land of promise, as in a foreign land, ^(B)living in tents ^(C)with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. ¹⁰ For he was looking forward to ^(D)the city that has ^(E)foundations, ^(F)whose designer and builder is God. ¹¹ By faith ^(G)Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered ^(H)him faithful who had promised. ¹² Therefore from one man, and ^(I)him as good as dead, were born descendants ^(J)as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

¹³ These all died in faith, ^(K)not having received the things promised, but ^(L)having seen them and greeted them from afar, and ^(M)having acknowledged that they were ^(N)strangers and exiles on the earth.
