⁵ you will die peacefully. As people made a funeral fire^(A) in honor of your predecessors, the kings who ruled before you, so they will make a fire in your honor and lament, “Alas,^(B) master!” I myself make this promise, declares the Lord.’”

¹⁸ Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:

¹⁴ They buried him in the tomb that he had cut out for himself^(A) in the City of David. They laid him on a bier covered with spices and various blended perfumes,^(B) and they made a huge fire^(C) in his honor.

⁴⁶ Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate^(A) before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering^(B) and incense be presented to him.

¹⁶ “‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, he shall die^(A) in Babylon, in the land of the king who put him on the throne, whose oath he despised and whose treaty he broke.^(B)

²⁸ Now I will gather you to your ancestors,^(A) and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place and on those who live here.’”^(B)

So they took her answer back to the king.

¹⁹ In the course of time, at the end of the second year, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in great pain. His people made no funeral fire in his honor,^(A) as they had for his predecessors.

²⁰ Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He passed away, to no one’s regret, and was buried^(B) in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

²⁰ Therefore I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be buried in peace.^(A) Your eyes^(B) will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place.’”

So they took her answer back to the king.
