⁵ You shall die in peace. ^(A)And as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so people shall ^(B)burn spices for you ^(C)and lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!”’ For I have spoken the word, declares the Lord.”

¹⁸ Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

¹⁴ They buried him in the tomb that he had cut for himself in the city of David. They laid him on a bier ^(A)that had been filled with various kinds of spices prepared by the perfumer's art, ^(B)and they made a very great fire in his honor.

Daniel Is Promoted

⁴⁶ Then King Nebuchadnezzar ^(A)fell upon his face and ^(B)paid homage to Daniel, and commanded that ^(C)an offering and ^(D)incense be offered up to him.

^16 (A)“As I live, declares the Lord God, surely ^(B)in the place where the king dwells ^(C)who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant with him he broke, in Babylon he shall die.

²⁸ Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring upon this place and its inhabitants.’” And they brought back word to the king.

¹⁹ In the course of time, at the end of two years, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in great agony. His people made no fire in his honor, ^(A)like the fires made for his fathers. ^20 (B)He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. And he departed ^(C)with no one's regret. ^(D)They buried him in the city of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

²⁰ Therefore, behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and ^(A)you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring upon this place.’” And they brought back word to the king.
