⁷ ‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you, saying, “Buy my field which is in Anathoth, for the ^(A)right of redemption is yours to buy it.” ’

Jeremiah Called to Be a Priest

1 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were ^(A)in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,

²¹ “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of ^(A)Anathoth who seek your life, saying, ^(B)‘Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, lest you die by our hand’—

^25 (A)‘If one of your brethren becomes poor, and has sold some of his possession, and if ^(B)his redeeming relative comes to redeem it, then he may redeem what his brother sold.

¹³ And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. ¹⁴ Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ ¹⁵ Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.”

¹⁶ So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.

² and He said to them, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. ³ And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.”

⁴ So they went their way, and found ^[a]the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. ⁵ But some of those who stood there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?”

⁶ And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go.

⁵ Now the Lord had said to Ahijah, “Here is the wife of Jeroboam, coming to ask you something about her son, for he is sick. Thus and thus you shall say to her; for it will be, when she comes in, that she will pretend to be another woman.”

³ Then he said to the close relative, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, sold the piece of land ^(A)which belonged to our brother Elimelech. ⁴ And I thought to ^[a]inform you, saying, ^(B)‘Buy it back ^(C)in the presence of the inhabitants and the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if ^[b]you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know; ^(D)for there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am next after you.’ ”

And he said, “I will redeem it.”

⁵ Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also buy it from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, ^(E)to ^[c]perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance.”

^6 (F)And the close relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”

^7 (G)Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging, to confirm anything: one man took off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was a confirmation in Israel.

⁸ Therefore the close relative said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” So he took off his sandal. ⁹ And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, from the hand of Naomi.

¹⁸ Anathoth with its common-land, and ^(A)Almon with its common-land: four cities. ¹⁹ All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their common-lands.
